UGA entertains state’s top junior prospects, Newnan’s Ogletree and Whitaker of Warner Robins

With Georgia putting the finishing touches on its 2009 recruiting class, it has been able to turn a lot of attention toward next year’s group.
Two of the state’s top juniors, Newnan safety Alec Ogletree and Warner Robins defensive tackle Jeffrey Whitaker, told the AJC that they plan to attend Saturday’s game against Central Michigan.
Henry County’s MarKeith Ambles, perhaps the state’s top wide receiver for 2010, made an unofficial visit to Georgia’s game against Georgia Southern last weekend.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Ogletree has offers from Georgia, Florida State and Clemson, and his coach expects 10 to 20 more within the next few months.
“The college scouts love those first three plays on his highlight film,” said Newnan coach Robert Herring. “On the first, he knocks someone so hard the kid’s helmet goes flying; on the second he about kills someone with a tackle; and on the third he comes all the way to the line of scrimmage to stop a reverse.
“By then, the scouts say they usually turn the VCR off. They’ve seen enough.”
The 6-4, 300-pound Whitaker has offers from Georgia, Clemson and North Carolina and appears to be on the verge of two more from Florida and Alabama.
“I’ve never had a player receive an offer [in his] sophomore year,” Warner Robins coach Bryan Way said. “But it’s happening all over the country, so it’s not that surprising.”
Whitaker, who has been clocked at 5.3 seconds in the 40-yard dash, registered 65 tackles and five sacks as a sophomore.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Ambles was seven-for-seven in earning scholarship offers at the summer camps he attended, including Alabama and Tennessee. Ambles missed both of Georgia’s camps because of scheduling conflicts, but said the Bulldogs have hinted at offering.
