Road Trip: Ridgeland’s Michael Bowman hopes to commit to UGA

Ridgeland wide receiver Michael Bowman said he will make an unofficial visit to Georgia for the second week in a row.

Last week, Bowman said he arrived at the game too late to have some one-on-one conversations with Georgia’s coaches, who Bowman said have promised a scholarship if he can raise his test scores.

The 6-foot-5, 222-pound Bowman is hoping this Saturday he can get a few minutes with Georgia coach Mark Richt to see if he can go ahead and commit to the Bulldogs. “Georgia has always been No. 1, and it would be great to get all this recruiting over with so I can focus on school and my senior season. We’ll see what happens.”

Bowman said his “backup plan” would be Alabama or LSU. He is arguably the state’s top prospect at wide receiver, earning MVP honors at wide receiver at Georgia and Alabama camps over the summer. He is a member of the AJC’s The Super Southern 100.

Georgia does not have any commitments at wide receiver for 2009, with Rantavious Wooten of Belle Glade, Fla., narrowly selecting LSU over the Bulldogs last week. Georgia is also being considered by Marlon Brown of Memphis, who denied reports he will eventually choose between Tennessee and Southern Cal.

Not sure I understand correctly here. If he gets a good enough score he goes to UGA, but if he doesn’t he will go to LSU or Bama.

Are you saying that UGA has a higher admission standard for football players than those two?

The University of Georgia does not take non-qualifiers. He would have to go to a prep school to get his scores up or a junior college. LSU and Alabama will take non-qualifiers and redshirt them while they get their grades up.

bill, Yess UGA has higher admission standards than most in the SEC, except maybe vanderbilt, has been that way for awhile now. Remember Michael Grant, the corner back? Committed to UGA, couldn’t score high enough and Richt helped him get into Arkansas, no JuCo, straight to Ark.

Lost Dawg—-Grants situation wasn’t grades. The UGA review board denied him due to an encounter of a sexual nature at school while he was in the 10th grade from what I understand. He was caught in the bathroom with a girl. Richt was fairly upset about it due to the kid being less than 16 at the time and everything was consensual.

It’s funny that an Alabama guy would say something about the best players after they lost to ULM last year…man one game has brought them out…A maggot and an Alabama fan have one thing in common, both of them can live on a dead bear for 25 years and like it…funny Redneck, go home.

I hope it works out well with the Bowman kid - However, I personally see a few red flags here:

  • If UGA told him to get his grades and test scores up - then he needs to focus on test scores instead of begging to bypass the requirement the UGA staff issued to him.
  • Love the fact he wants to go to UGA - hopes he makes the grades and test scores - rooting for this kid ……. but if you make excpetions to elite athletes - many of which are not held fully accountable - you will be looking at potential problems down the road as these elite athletes feel entitled for continous free passes.

  • The fact that the kid stated that he wanted to meet Coach Richt last week - but was late? LATE????!!!! Is this a red flag to anyone else out there??
  • I understand that this is a 17? / 18? year old kid - but jeeze!!

Lastly - I admit I am not familiar with the Bowman kid with the exception of what I have recently read. Never seen him play - did not know about his school until recently - up near Chattanooga - sounds like he is a talent!!!!

Forming opinions on a few articles is dangerous - and I admit that I am not too familiar with him.

Is there anyone out there that can chime in about this kid? Hope it works out for him.
