Northside LB Eric Fields backs off Clemson pledge, now considering UGA

Northside-Warner Robins linebacker Eric Fields, an AJC Super 11 selection, has backed off his commitment to Clemson and is now considering Georgia, according to published reports.

When asked about Fields on Friday, Northside coach Conrad Nix told the AJC, “To my knowledge, Eric has never been 100-percent committed to Clemson. I know he likes it there, and it’s one of his favorites, if not his favorite. And he might have told Clemson something I don’t know about. But to my knowledge, it has never been a done deal with Clemson.”

It would be huge for Georgia if it was able to sway Fields, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 10 outside linebacker by Rivals and is a member of the AJC’s Super Southern 100.

On Thursday, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Fields told the Macon Telegraph that “he pulled the trigger too soon on his commitment” [to Clemson].

Fields later confirmed with GoUpstate.com that he planned to take official visits to both Georgia and Clemson. Said Fields, “I’m just taking some time. I talked with [Clemson] other day … Clemson is back on my good side. I watched their game [against Alabama] and I think I can make a big impact on their team. Georgia, they are highly ranked and I can win a national championship there.”

Another factor in Georgia’s favor is that Northside defensive tackle Abry Jones has already committed to the Bulldogs.

After Odell Thurman left, UGA’s linebackers struggled against the run for a few seasons until last year. Having lots of depth at that position is very important.

To Young Mr. Fields,

Do the right thing for yourself and investigate the schools you are interested in.

At the end of the day - you will see that Clemson is academically superior than any SEC school - has tremendous training facilities to further your career - and the best football stadium in all of college football.

Don’t let our slow start against Alabama fool you. Yes, it was very disappointing - but adversity happens in life - true champions will overcome - and one loss will not ruin our season.

Clemson will win the ACC this year - and will play in a BCS bowl.

The talent and depth is building - the foundation is being laid right now for years of success - and you will be a part of somethig special if you choose to attend Clemson!!!

In regards to UGA - I ask you to look at they caliber of fan that sits in the stands and ask yourself - do you really want to be associated with this school?
Do you really want to attend a school with classless players that jump on oppoenents logos (VAndy) and dance in the endzone like a bunch of jerks after a touchdown? (see Florida) Where close to 10% of the players were arrested in the offseason?

Clemson will prepare you for the NFL and life after football!!

Go Tigers!!!

I am sure that, with whoever Clemson names as its new coach next year, things will improve at Clemson. The Clemson athletic director will likely call up Bobby Bowden, Nick Saban and Mark Richt and see if they can recommend a new football coach.

Listen to Tiger Paw. Go to a school that hasn’t won anything of significance (or even 10 games in a season for that matter) in many, many years. You can play in a fantastic conference, who one of these days hopes to win a BCS game. Also, if you want to play in the NFL someday, dont’ go to UGA. There’s no way they’re in the top 2 or 3 of all colleges with players in the NFL. And no way they have over 2x as many as Clemson. So, don’t waste your time getting a quality education at UGA, or winning SEC Championships, or playing in BCS games, or worse yet, a National Championship game one day. Plus, what fun is it to play for the same coach the whole time you’re in college? If you’re lucky, within 2 years (if not sooner), you’ll have a new coach at Clemson, after they yet again, show their true colors with a typical 8-4 season after being overhyped all year. The choice is yours… Best of luck!

In reality, you can tell us that green is your favorite color…green with envy that is.

Come back when the mighty Tigers are legitimate once again.

As for Eric Fields, whichever decision he makes, all the best to him. Play hard and stay healthy, young man!

Maybe Eric should consider an official visit to GT. We have a bright future and a VERY solid defense. He might really like what he sees and decide to play for the Jackets!!

GT also offers a superb college education along with many high character coaches, players and fans.

I predict the GT Football program will be consistently in the top 15 nationally (or higher) and will also start a new winning streak against UGA in 2010. Why not sign with GT and be an important part of the excitement!!

Feilds is a great player,, no doubt,,, but according to the AJC Super 11 spread he has the lowest GPA of all 11,,, and so how’s he going to handle the academics ?? Folks on these very blogs were hyper critical of Jonathon Davis’ grades and character,,, and so i can’t help but wonder about the same issues with Feilds.

Does he have what it takes to handle the academics in college ?

What a joke. I have worked with and hired Clemson grads and Duke grads who could not even write a complete sentence.

Very few schools are academically superior to any other school. It depends on the student, the major and the professors the student happens to have.

Even Vanderbilt, Duke and the Ive League schools practice grade point inflation. I consider that policy a travesty.

I also beg to differ about the Stadium too. I have been to “Death Valley” several times and really thought it was a dump. I don’t care what the so called experst say. On top of being extremly hard to get in and espescially out of. The problem with Clemson Football was they were allways the best football team in a basketball conference. Then FState and Miami and Vtech came in and they couldn’t claim that any more. Now they are supposidly the best team in a really crappie conference. It is a travesty that Bowden hasn’t already won an ACC title. So if you believe all the BS TigerPaw said it’s a freakin’ utopia there.

As someone who grew up when Clemson was one of the toughest teams in the country to beat on Saturdays, their 20 years of medicority is very sad to watch, but it ain’t getting any better with the Bowden staff. In fact, the only time Clemson has really been good in the modern era was when they were cheating. First under Charley Pell and second with Danny Ford. The cheating led to them getting players right from under UGA’s noses (John Johnson, Chris Morroco, Homer Jordan etc…, etc…. Clemson’s only conference champion since 1967 (a 6-4 Frank Howard squad) without cheaters Ford and Pell came in 1991 (9-2-1 under Ken Hatfield). One non-cheating chamionship in over 40 years is pathetic. Hell Tech is better than that. Eric, they suck. Go play somewhere else. If you want to play for championships over the next 4 years, go to LSU, Bama or UGA because those are the only schools in the region that are going to play for any while you are in college.

I guess you drank the WHOLE container of cool aid! To say that “is academically better than all SEC schools & that your small stadium is the best in college football” is pure fiction. It is not only laughable, it is absurd!

Furthermore, how many former clemson players are in the NFL? Last time the stats were reported, UGA had the second highest number of former players there & the SEC led all conferences by a wide margin. Deal with the facts!!

For the Clempson folks on here… As if you didn’t think this would happen after that beatdown in Atlanta? Perhaps Tommy can consunlt our coach with this problem.. Maybe ask him how he can sway the young man back to CU? Who knows. All I know is that if he wants to 1. Win 2. Play in a conference that will prepare hmi for the next level, and 3. Play for an admirable Head Coach that knows what he’s doing and cares about his players, he should pledge to UGA. PS. If you think for one second that Fields is the only recruit rethinking his decision to play for CU, think again. Roll Tide…. and SEC!!!!

tiger paw,

I’m having a hard time typing because of the tears in my eyes created from laughing so hard at your post. To the recruit: I guess it depends on what type of vehicle you want to drive.

Go to Georgia-you will one day drive a nice CAR. It will be able to get you most places in the same day.

Go to Clempson-You will drive a tractor around town. Poses problems for away football games since you have to leave on Tuesday and it causes you to shut down your farm and therefore you don’t make any money.

The choice is yours…………

UGA is the place to be for the next few years at least. A certain contender for the top spots in the ratings and for visibility for any talented player.

You can see how poorly Clemson was coached in the game against Bama. I picked Bama to win that game weeks ago when everyone raved on and on about the talent that Clemson has. Well, talent is only as good as how it’s used.

Good Luck in your decision. I hope you end up deciding to play between the hedges son.

Looks like UGA fans are showing their true colors Green with envy.

Clemson has won more conference titles than Georgia and won the National Title more recent than you.

Academically - Clemson offers what UGA offers - but also Engineering!!! TAKE THAT!!!!

Plus - our woman are better looking and do not dip snuff like those cows and pigs that go to UGA.

UGA is a joke - we never had a Jan Kemp episode and Herschell bought that Trans Am on his own - yeah right!!!

Clemson was a former military college - has honor - has a better class of students and fans - is academically superior - AND has Howards Rock and Death Valley - much louder and better than UGA’s Stadium.

Our campus is absolutely beautiful - one of the best in all of America. Not big and spread out like Uga.

UGA is lucky that Clemson is not in the SEC.

SEC is finally down to one school on probation.

The ACC is truley an academic and sports conference - better preparing our students for life.

When UGA was struggling under Goff and trying to win under Donnan - UGA fans were more humble and appreciative - but since Richt has had some success - UGA fans have lowered themselves to the level of Florida, LSU, and the obnoxious Tennessee fans.

At least the Auburn fans showed some class after they upset us last year in a fantastic bowl game. Both teams played hard and well …… Clemson really dominated and desreved to win - Auburn got lucky and the breaks they needed to win - so hats off. The Auburn fans showed real class - probably because our schools are similar in academic offering and campus architecture.

Go Tigers!

I am eternally entertained when another school says, “we have an engineering program and you don’t.” You do understand, don’t you, that the State of Georgia and UGA are only too glad to shuffle the nerds off to Georgia Tech, and thus improve matters at UGA.

I remember the bumper stickers from the mid-1980’s — “PROBATION: A Clemson Tradition”, and I remember Clemson fans telling me that IPTAY stands for “It’s probation time again y’all”. I’m sorry that South Carolina football (including Clemson) is in the toilet this year. I’m sorry that Clemson has a long history of choking and poor coaching. Bama’s beatdown of Clemson is going to start a landslide of athletes going to other schools and, if you’re honest, you’ll admit it.

I think that the Clemson fans need a hug, right about now. After all, it’s got to be a kick in the junk when a legendary coach like Bobby Bowden of FSU has stated to the media that he is very much pulling for Georgia coach Mark Richt to win a National Championship.

That would not come as a surprise until you realize that Bobby Bowden had very little to say about the Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden - who, oh, by the way, just happens to be Bobby Bowden’s son. Ouch!

Tiger paw:

Sad.

Sad that you feel compelled to resort to fabricating data to try to salve your own wounded psyche.

Sad that you choose to denigrate another school when it is the abysmal state of your own athletic program that needs help.

As stated above, Clemson is academically inferior to the University of Georgia by almost every measure. SAT average? Clemson loses on that one. Honors Program? Georgia’s got you beat there. Rhodes scholars? Georgia had two last year. Has Clemson ever had one? Has anyone in Oxford, England ever even heard of Clemson? And how about that Clemson Law School? Uh, no, sorry, it doesn’t exist. Business school? Georgia wins again. Engineering? Okay, I’ll give you that one. You’ve got some sort of engineering school, but it isn’t recognized by anyone outside of the state of South Carolina. There are engineering schools in Mexico, too. That doesn’t make them good. A shout out to your ACC rivals in Atlanta on that one—at least the best Engineering school in the south is in Georgia.

And, by the way, it doesn’t strengthen your academic superiority arguments when you can’t spell or use proper grammar. That just makes you look stupid. But then, what might we expect from the third-best academic institution in South Carolina?

And how about football? The Dawgs won the last meeting 30-0. They lead the overall head-to-head series by a ridiculous margin. Georgia plays in a better conference, in a bigger stadium, has more bowl wins and more national titles.

Overall athletics? Georgia won national titles in men’s tennis, equestrian and womens’ gymnastics this year, was second in football and baseball, and won the SEC tourney in basketball. Clemson? What, not one national title? Not one ACC title?

Georgia has one of the top five athletic programs in the nation in terms of profitability, a larger student body with better academic credentials, a better academic program by all objective measures (see U.S. News rankings) and has beaten Clemson in every athletic arena possible. The football comparisons are a joke. The Dawgs have more players in the NFL, more titles, more wins and a huge advantage in the head-to-head contest category. And Athens beats Cow College USA hands down as a place to live for four years.

What’s the advantage of going to Clemson?

Well, you can wear the same orange outfit when to the game on Saturday, when you hunt on Sunday, and when you pick up trash by the roadside on Monday.

Sorry, Tiger Paw. Your delusions are showing.

I told her Bama would Kill Clemson and it was not about talent that they would be out coached. They have been out coached since Bowdon took over and will continue to loose games they should win until they get a real coach. The talent is there and has been for years but coaching has killed them. If the kid wants to win big and play against players that will improve his stock in the NFL then the SEC is the place. As for the fans and stadium both GA & CL are nice so that pretty much evens it out but maybe the Kid sees the differences in that the ACC is a B-Ball conference, the SEC is a F-Ball conference.

As a graduate of UGA, I grew up near Clemson, My mom was Miss Clemson, my Dad received his masters from Clemson before attending medical school and guess who they pull for? GEORGIA. That’s right, they always have. Clemson fans HATE Tommy. Often after big games that they can’t EVER win, fans place for sale signs in his yard. Tommy is arogant, and does not care about his fans or players. This comes directly from Clemson fans. They will tell you this with confidence. Insofar as the stadium, Clemson rarely fills it up. Georgi’a Sanford, on the other hand, sells out over 92,000 for every game and is about to be expanded with 10,000 - 15,000 additional seats. There is no place like Sanford stadium and being “Between The Hedges”. Mark Richt is a fine christian man who loves his fans and we ALL love him. He cares about each player and their individual and personal gaols and helps them get reach their potential on the field and off the field. Clemson could win the ACC, but that means very little on the national stage. Win the SEC and you will play for the National Championship EVERY year. BIG difference. The choice is rather simple. We are sure you’ll see the light and make the right decision about your future. GO DAWGS !

That’s right. ‘Member that classic a couple of yers ago when we bopped heads with the cocksters and half our team was bleeding ‘fusely. I couldn’t have been more proud. Yessir, I rounded up all my friends and we pooled our resources to spring the team from the county poke. After all, we are a proud bunch. And schooling… let me tell you somein’. With my engineering degree from the son of Clem, I can cypher with the best of ‘em. 1+1 is 3, 1+2 is 3, 1+3 is 3….Hey, you can’t trust that anal US News Report. They don’t know squat. Never you mind that UGA and UF are anally top 20 because the son of Clem made it big time this year. I knew our cyphering program would make us proud some day. Well, I think I’ve approved my point. I gotta go to my Satuerdey afternoon whooping. Yeeeeha!

Yep, ClemPson is so good at academics that they offer non-qualifiers. Clemson is a Cow College full of coots.

To the clemson is a great university chump… According to Greenes guide of public ivy league universities in 2001, Clemson failed to make the list…. However, UGA is named as one of them. Not only do we have a better football program, coach, and facilities… we are also a better academic university than Clemson.

Tiger Paw,

I seem to remember that UGA is 5-0 against Clemson since 1991. And the last time we beat ya’ll we won 30-0 in your “beloved” Death Valley.

So when you have something credible to say about Clemson please come back and let me know.

Go Dawgs!!

Clemson an academically superior school??????

I guess US News & World Report’s latest college ranking guides is wrong. Ah, what do they know, right?

What do you call Clemson? Auburn with a lake.

If you want to be a farmer in a state that qualifies as a third-world nation, by all means, go to Clemson.

I m not going to trash any school, but as most fans know , schools go in cycles, down years and up years, they usually last about 10 yrs on the average, UGA is in that cycle now. Take heed.

Tiger Paw: perhaps your education at clempson failed to prepare you to communicate with the written word. While you can say one thing is “superior to” another, it is incorrect to say it is “superior than” another. As to the class of fans at Georgia compared with fans of Clempson, your comments are laughable at best (orange overalls?). Which team recently had such a large scale brawl with another that the coach decided the entire team would miss thier bowl game (with 6 wins)? Such a cosmopolitan town, a program which exhibits this type of gentlemanly behavior and fans in orange overalls predisposed to fight with opposing fans would all qualify a student athlete for life after college. You are obviously an astute student of human behavior and wise beyond your years. What color is the sky in your world? Have a nice day.

In regards to tiger paw, what about the large brawl during a recent clemson game, that would really make a kid die to get some of that class. I just wish that UGA played clemson this year so that the Dawgs could thrash them as the Tide did.

I am a fan of Georgia and Clemson. But the idiot “Tiger Paw” makes me reconsider. Are you really going to compare Clemson and UGA academically? They are obviously on the same level and the point is retarded. You obviously have never attended either of these schools or probably any college or University.

Tigger Paw,

You sure created a firestorm. Your facilities and team don’t even compare to the product in Athens. You are proving to be a fool with such dribble. You were crushed by BAMA and would be doubly crushed by the DAWGS.

Crawl back in your hole.
