Road Trip: Gainesville junior Jones to visit the other Gainesville
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Gainesville junior receiver Tailer Jones will visit an SEC campus on Saturday.
“He’s going to the Miami-Florida game,” Gainesville assistant coach Todd Wofford said. “Tailer received an e-mail earlier this week from [Florida coach] Urban Meyer.”
The talented receiver is expected to start receiving scholarship offers from national powers this fall.
Jones, who participated in Dawg Night in Athens this summer, is being recruited by Georgia.
He caught eight passes for 158 yards and one touchdown in the Red Elephants’ 35-0 season-opening victory over Chestatee on Aug. 29.

Road Trip: Henry County QB Drew Little to Alabama
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Henry County quarterback Drew Little, who Georgia State is trying to convince to become its first-ever recruit, is making an unofficial visit to the Alabama-Tulane game on Saturday night.
The Crimson Tide have shown minimal interest in the 6-foot-5, 245—pound Little, who is considered a “pure” dropback passer. Little got phone calls this week from recruiters from Georgia State and Boston College.
Henry County coach Mike Rozier said he “knew for a fact that [Little] was the No. 2 quarterback” on South Carolina’s recruiting board for 2009. Little is a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150.

UGA makes final five for Florida DB Michael Carter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Michael Carter of Pompana Beach, Fla., who is ranked as the nation’s No. 10 defensive back by Rivals and a member of the AJC’s The Super Southern 100, confirmed that he has narrowed down to five schools: Florida, Miami, Georgia, West Virginia, and Minnesota.
The 5-foot-10, 154-pound speedster said he will attend the Florida-Miami game on Saturday, and that the Gators were one of several schools that called his house earlier this week: “They called my dad to check up on me and my game, and also to tell me about their upcoming game.”
Georgia already has one cornerback commitment, Jordan Love of Glen Allen, Va., and the Bulldogs are chasing hard after Booker T. Washington’s Branden Smith.

Northside LB Eric Fields backs off Clemson pledge, now considering UGA
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Northside-Warner Robins linebacker Eric Fields, an AJC Super 11 selection, has backed off his commitment to Clemson and is now considering Georgia, according to published reports.
When asked about Fields on Friday, Northside coach Conrad Nix told the AJC, “To my knowledge, Eric has never been 100-percent committed to Clemson. I know he likes it there, and it’s one of his favorites, if not his favorite. And he might have told Clemson something I don’t know about. But to my knowledge, it has never been a done deal with Clemson.”
It would be huge for Georgia if it was able to sway Fields, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 10 outside linebacker by Rivals and is a member of the AJC’s Super Southern 100.
On Thursday, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Fields told the Macon Telegraph that “he pulled the trigger too soon on his commitment” [to Clemson].
Fields later confirmed with GoUpstate.com that he planned to take official visits to both Georgia and Clemson. Said Fields, “I’m just taking some time. I talked with [Clemson] other day … Clemson is back on my good side. I watched their game [against Alabama] and I think I can make a big impact on their team. Georgia, they are highly ranked and I can win a national championship there.”
Another factor in Georgia’s favor is that Northside defensive tackle Abry Jones has already committed to the Bulldogs.

Oklahoma State reacts to item on the AJC college recruiting blog
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
A posting on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s college recruiting blog earlier this week, which focused on Douglas County quarterback Tony Caldwell, has captured the attention of coaches at Oklahoma State.
Monday’s blog revealed that Caldwell opened his senior season on Friday by completing 19 of 27 passes for 274 yards and one touchdown.
The entry, which was posted at 12:16 p.m., also noted that he threw for 354 yards in one game and rushed for more than 200 yards in another during his junior season.
And it went on to mention that Caldwell maintains a 3.8 GPA and scored a 1680 on the SAT.
Those lofty statistics caught the eye of recruiters in Stillwater.
“Oklahoma State called on Monday,” Caldwell said. “They called my coach and said they saw the article on me on the Internet and they want a highlight tape after my first three games.
“I would definitely be interested in Oklahoma State if they want me to come out and visit, or if they offer.”
Caldwell, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia Top 150, is also receiving interest from Furman, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee State and Wake Forest.

Road Trip: Ridgeland’s Michael Bowman hopes to commit to UGA
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Ridgeland wide receiver Michael Bowman said he will make an unofficial visit to Georgia for the second week in a row.
Last week, Bowman said he arrived at the game too late to have some one-on-one conversations with Georgia’s coaches, who Bowman said have promised a scholarship if he can raise his test scores.
The 6-foot-5, 222-pound Bowman is hoping this Saturday he can get a few minutes with Georgia coach Mark Richt to see if he can go ahead and commit to the Bulldogs. “Georgia has always been No. 1, and it would be great to get all this recruiting over with so I can focus on school and my senior season. We’ll see what happens.”
Bowman said his “backup plan” would be Alabama or LSU. He is arguably the state’s top prospect at wide receiver, earning MVP honors at wide receiver at Georgia and Alabama camps over the summer. He is a member of the AJC’s The Super Southern 100.
Georgia does not have any commitments at wide receiver for 2009, with Rantavious Wooten of Belle Glade, Fla., narrowly selecting LSU over the Bulldogs last week. Georgia is also being considered by Marlon Brown of Memphis, who denied reports he will eventually choose between Tennessee and Southern Cal.

Road Trip: Lakeside-Evans DB Kyle Tudor visiting East Carolina
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Lakeside-Evans safety Kyle Tudor, a lifelong Georgia fan who committed to East Carolina, said he is excited about seeing the Pirates play against West Virginia on Saturday.
East Carolina is the talk of the college football world after pulling off an upset against Virginia Tech last week. Tudor got to talk about the game with East Carolina coach Skip Holtz when he called earlier this week to check on his prized prospect.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Tudor went to the Georgia-Georgia Southern game last week, but not on recruiting tickets. His parents are longtime season-ticket holders at Georgia. Tudor tried to earn a scholarship from Georgia at summer camp, but his participation was limited due to a back injury. He committed to East Carolina a few weeks later.

Sept. 1 was the first day that colleges could contact senior prospects, and Patterson said he was called by Florida, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Purdue and N.C. State, among others.
Patterson, a member of the AJC’s The Super Southern 100, said he remains committed to Stanford.

Road Trip: Chattahoochee QB headed to Wake Forest
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Chattahoochee quarterback Brendan Cross will see his future team for the first time in person this season.
Cross, who committed to Wake Forest, plans to observe the Demon Deacons play Ole Miss on Saturday. The son of former NFL player Randy Cross committed to Wake Forest within minutes after being offered a scholarship this past summer, picking the ACC school over Air Force, Bowling Green and Ohio University.
Cross, who is a member of the AJC’s The Georgia Top 150, said he was called by Wake Forest coaches earlier in the week. Cross said he has not heard anything lately from Vanderbilt and South Florida, two other major-college programs that had been scouting Cross before he committed.
