ECI’s Ealey, Moody have fast starts
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Emanuel County Institute safety Dexter Moody took the spotlight from his more publicized teammate and fellow University of Georgia commitment Washaun Ealey during the Bulldogs’ opening 28-13 victory against Savannah Country Day.
Moody blocked a punt, had two sacks, broke up two passes and had seven tackles. Ealey ran for 137 yards with touchdown runs of 39, 15 and 2 yards on 17 carries.
ECI lineman J.C. Lanier, who has committed to Georgia Tech, did not play with a minor injury.

I was at this game, and the commentary here is inaccurate. Dex Moody did not block a punt; there were no punts blocked in the game. One punt was shanked because of a bad snap, but no defensive player touched that ball. Moody did, however, run the ball well, and played well on defense. JC Lanier played the entire game on both sides of the ball, and played well. He was in on almost every snap, and did not seem to tire at all. He’ll be a good one at Tech. Ealey played poorly as compared to last year. He’s been slowed by ankle and hamstring injuries and is not 100%. Last season he averaged 11 ypc for the year (although his worst game was against SCDS, when he averaged 5.2 ypc). He broke one long run against the Hornets (the 39 yard TD), but was not the dominant back who ripped through the playoffs last season.
As mentioned above, Savannah Christian and ECI play Friday night. Unless ECI improves, SCPS will beat them. ECI’s corners play soft, and if SCPS can throw the ball, it will open things up for them for inside running plays. And if Ealey is still slowed, the ECI offense may have a long night.

JustMyOpinion, I smell a rat. Morton’s version of events is the correct one. I too was at that game watching my nephew who plays for Country Day. I wish we could have gotten Ealy, we need a strong inside running tailback (for some reason Coach Bowden only recruits midgets with overblown 40 times). And Savannah Christian couldn’t beat ECI if you gave them a truckload of baseball bats. They’ll give up 80 pounds per man across the line of scrimmage.

MetterNole:
There is no rat here.
My son plays football for SCDS—starting outside linebacker and fullback. Either some other 6’4” guy in JC Lanier’s uniform played or Lanier played the whole game (I not only watched the game, I also watched the film after the game with the SCDS coaches). Moody had great game, but he didn’t block a punt. Ealey was good, but not typical Washaun good; you take away his 39 yard TD and he averaged about 6 yards per carry, or about 5 ypc less than his average for the year last season. And SCDS threw for over 200 yards on ECI because their corners play soft. If SCPS’s young QBs can make a few throws, that will open things up for Barnwell up the middle, who is no slouch at running the ball himself.
That being said, I hope that ECI wins the game. Milan Turner is a class act and his boys come to play each week. SCPS dropped a classification because they couldn’t compete year-to-year in AA. They are the largest class A school in the state and they recruit heavily from the Savannah area. There’s no love lost between our school and the Raiders. But to say that Lanier didn’t play last week is just wrong. Call ECI and ask them if you have any doubts. The other observations are just what I saw to be true.
Anyway, we’ll see what happens tonight! Good luck to all of Georgia high school players on the gridiron tonight! No injuries!

ECI beat SCPS in Twin City 28-21 on a last-second pass to Dex Moody.
Tight game—could have been won by either team. They’ll probably see each other again down the road.
Sorta corroborates my version of last week, don’t cha think?

heeldawg is correct about Lanier, he played the entire game, we were missing 3 starting linemen during the SCDS game, but JC was not one of them. He did see limited action against SCPS due to a stomach virus.
