Tucker DT out with ankle injury

It was a fluke collision on the second play of Tucker’s 26-12 victory against Brunswick last week that has star defensive end Deion Robinson on crutches this week, and perhaps for many weeks to come.

Robinson, a 6-foot-3, 258-pound senior, suffered a dislocated left ankle after a teammate was blocked into his lower leg. “All I know is I was about to make the play and it popped out of place.”

Now wearing a splint and using cructhes, Robinson is looking at some extended time out. He says doctors at the hospital told him “8 to 10 weeks,” but he is to see his doctor on Thursday, hopefully with a better prognosis.

Robinson has been offered by Memphis, West Virginia, N.C. State, Louisville, East Carolina, Michigan State, Maryland, Iowa State, Georgia Southern and South Alabama, and says he’s not concerned that the injury will scare schools away.

Memphis called Monday to check up on his condition and assured him “they’re behind me.”

Robinson’s prediction is to return to the playing field “by the seventh or eighth game.”

Miller Grove star weighs track, football

Kenneth Gilstrap is like a lot of two-sport athletes, he wants to play both in college.

The problem is that the list of college offers vary drastically depending on the sport

Those interested in his track ability represent some of the best major-college programs — South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee, Kansas State, Louisville. Gilstrap is one of the state’s best sprinters in the 100 and 200 meters.

The football list is a bit less spectacular — Ohio, Middle Tennessee, UAB, Western Kentucky, Memphis, Central Michigan, Richmond. Considered an athlete by recruiting observers, Gilstrap plays receiver and cornerback at Miller Grove, but also is used at other positions, including quarterback.

Gilstrap said he expects a football offer from Kentucky, which would allow him a chance to play both sports at the major-college level. “They told me they want to offer me,” he said.

In the meantime, Gilstrap has track visits planned with South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky.

“I want to do both, but whatever happens, happens,” he said. “I just want to be an athlete and compete in college.”

Dunwoody’s King eyes academics

Dunwoody linebacker Jerry King says academics will be a major factor in his college decision.

The 6-foot, 225-pound middle linebacker has his list down to UAB, Samford, Wofford, Tulane and Central Florida. He hasn’t scheduled visits yet, but plans to make one to Samford soon.

“It’s wide open,” said King, who has a 3.0 grade-point average. “I’m going to look at each one and make a decision based on the education they have to offer. I really want to make the right decision.”

Warner Robins DT Whitaker to visit Athens on Saturday

Warner Robins junior Jeffrey Whitaker will make his first recruiting visit of the season on Saturday when he travels to Athens to watch Georgia play host to Central Michigan.

“I want to say it’s an official visit, but I’m going to the game on my own,” said Whitaker, who has scholarship offers from Georgia and Clemson. “I plan on being up there around 11 a.m.”

The 6-foot-3.5, 300-pound defensive tackle, who plans to participate in Saturday’s Dawg Walk and be on the field during the pregame warm-ups, will attend at least two other Georgia games this year. He’s also penciled in one trip to Clemson this fall.

Whitaker says it’s way too soon for him to consider a commitment.

“I don’t even have a category [like a top-five], but I’m feeling good about Georgia and Clemson,” said Whitaker, who attended two Georgia games last fall.

“I’ve got two more years. I’ll weigh my options and, trust me, I’ll make the right pick.”

Alabama may be on the verge of offering Whitaker.

“I’m getting a lot of stuff from them,” he said.

Inside the stat: Milton’s Toney Williams

40

Carries by Milton’s Toney Williams, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150, who has committed to Tennessee. Williams had 350 yards and six rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown.

Expect that many carries?

“I expected to get 30. I knew I was going to get a lot, but it kind of surprised me. I kind of expect to lead the offense.”

Fatigue factor?

“I was really tired. I was drinking Pedialite on the sideline to keep from cramping up. My line made it easy for me. They made big holes, and the fullbacks did a good job blocking for me.”

Teammates excitement?

“I got reminded, but that wasn’t a lot of focus. We just wanted to win the game. I just knew I had to keep on plugging and keep going downhill.”

Cartersville baseball star Tate returns to football

Donavan Tate, the prize baseball prospect who had decided to skip his senior season of football, has changed his mind again.

Tate returned to football practice Monday and is open to scholarship offers in both sports. He is listed on the AJC’s The Georgia 150 list and is a Super Southern 100 selection.

“He told me it’s not about any scholarships but that, ‘I don’t want to look back on my senior year and regret not playing football,’ ” Cartersville football coach Frank Barden said. “You can’t foresee the future, but yes, you’d think there are still going to be opportunities for him in both sports.”

In baseball, Tate is rated the No. 1 high school position player in the country by Baseball America. Many believe he could be the first player chosen in the major league draft next summer.

In football, Tate is a member of the Rivals100, which recognizes the top 100 prospects in the country. Scout.com rates him the No. 17 safety prospect nationally. At 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, Tate reportedly has football scholarship offers from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Texas and Southern California.

Barden said Tate would practice this week but not play in a game until Sept. 12 at Calhoun. Cartersville defeated Cass 25-20 in its opener last week and plays Rockmart on Friday at home.

“The main thing that’s going to happen is he’s got to get his body in condition for a football game,” Barden said. “He knows his body more than anybody, and he knows what to do. We feel by the third game, he’ll be ready.”

Kevin Myles happy to play in shadows of cousin

Carver-Atlanta’s Kevin Myles is an undersized tailback with no college offers.

His cousin, Darren Myles Jr., is a senior on the team and one of the most heavily-recruited safeties in the country. (Myles Sr. is Carver’s coach).

But Kevin is not jealous of his cousin. He says Darren is the best thing that has happened to him and the rest of the team.

“When colleges come in here to watch Darren practice, see his film or stop by the school just to check on everything, it gives the rest of us a chance to be seen by the scouts,” Kevin said. “The rest of us get the opportunity to show what we can do. It really helps.”

The 5-foot-8, 160-pound Myles said Middle Tennessee State and Duke have requested film. Kevin followed Darren and his dad to most of their visits to SEC and ACC schools during the summer. Kevin said he and Darren are attending the LSU-Georgia game on Oct. 25 in Baton Rouge, La.
