Tucker’s Jonathan Davis hopes for another UGA look

Tucker linebacker Jonathan Davis said he would love to get another look from Georgia.

The 5-foot-8, 205-pound Davis has Georgia connections. His uncle, Mitch Davis, was an All-SEC linebacker for the Bulldogs. Davis is an AJC Super 11 selection and considered by many to be the state’s top football player.

“I would love to go to Georgia; who wouldn’t?” Davis said.

Davis said Georgia coaches were impressed with his film and his performance at camp, yet the school has not offered. Davis figures an offer is unlikely because the Bulldogs already have three commitments at linebacker and are holding out hopes of landing Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones, who has denied reports he is leaning toward Clemson.

“I’d be a good football player for Georgia if they gave me the chance,” Davis said.

Davis has three offers, including Central Florida and Alabama-Birmingham, and has set up an official visit to Oklahoma State. He is also being recruited by South Carolina and Penn State.

Big numbers on opening night for Douglas County QB Caldwell

Still awaiting his first scholarship offer, Douglas County senior quarterback Tony Caldwell made the most of a 42-17 loss to Whitewater Friday evening when he completed 19 of 27 passes for 274 yards and one touchdown.

Caldwell, who made his first start at quarterback as a sophomore, isn’t afraid to display his rushing skills in Douglas County’s spread offense.

“Last year, I threw for 354 yards against Cherokee County,” he said. “I like to think of myself as a pocket passer, but I will pull it down and run.

“In the playoffs last year against Northwest Whitfield, I got over 200 yards rushing in that game.”

Caldwell, who scored a 1680 on the SAT and carries a 3.8 GPA, is beginning to generate some interest from recruiters.

“I’m talking to Furman, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee State and Wake Forest,” he said. “Furman and Georgia Southern told me to send them my highlight tape of the first four games, and that if I do well they’ll offer.”

How It Went: Henry County junior talks UGA visit

Henry County receiver MarKeith Ambles was one of the recruits on-hand for Georgia’s victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday.

“It was nice,” the 6-foot-3, 185 pound junior said. “I got to talk to about every Georgia coach except Mark Richt.”

Ambles has scholarship offers from seven schools, including Alabama and Tennessee.

He’s still hopeful that Georgia will follow suit.

“I wasn’t expecting an offer on Saturday, but they’ll probably offer me after they see some of my film,” Ambles said.

He plans to head to Gainesville, Fla. this weekend.

“I’m going to Florida for the Miami game,” said Ambles, who is curious to see if the Gators will offer. “I just started talking to [coaches at Florida] about a week ago.”
