So You Want To Know: The AJC answers your recruiting questions
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Q. What SAT or ACT score is deemed to be acceptable at UGA for an athlete? Does his high school GPA and community activities count a certain portion for admission? Why do some players go to a prep school while others must go to a junior college before admisssion to UGA?
A. The NCAA uses a sliding scale based on GPA and SAT or ACT score to determine eligibility, and frankly, it’s pretty low. With a 3.5 GPA, you just about can qualify if you can spell your name right. For students with a 3.0 GPA, the minimum SAT score is 620. For a 2.5, it’s 820. For a 2.0, it’s 1010.
Keep in mind that these are NCAA minimums and not necessarily the minimums of a particular school. At Georgia, since that is the school you asked about, an athlete must meet the university’s minimum admission requirements or get a special waiver from the office of the president, Michael Adams.
A player who goes to prep school is generally one who keeps trying to make a passing SAT score but fails, then takes the prep route at the last minute. His main objective at prep school is work toward a qualifying score. If successful, he can enroll at the four-year school of his choice and be a true freshman.
Junior college is the answer for academic issues that aren’t as easily resolved. It might be the GPA. Some students lack the minimum number of core courses in high school to qualify regardless of their SAT score or GPA. Others take the junior college route to prove themselves. If you think you’re good enough to play for Alabama, but your only option is a Division II school because of academics, playing at a junior college and graduating may be your ticket to the SEC.
NEED TO KNOW BASIS: What do you want to know about recruiting? If you have a question, add it to the blog, and if there’s an answer to be found we’ll get back to you within 24 hours.

How about this one: How many players have to get arrested in a year before the program becomes a joke?

Gay? Going on another teams website? It looks like this is ajc.com. In fact, its the football recruiting blog section of the site. Who told you to claim parts of this site?
Just because you found a link on the doggie page, doesn’t mean everything behind it belongs to you.
Guess you couldn’t make that 1010 to go with your 2.0

They’ll accept a 1.0 high school gpa, but then they give 300 points for being able to say his name, and another 300 for being able to spell it. If he can accomplish these very difficult tasks, then he comes on in as a full academic qualifier. They also assign tutors to help him with these tough tasks.

Are those SAT scores based on the old or the new SAT scores? The new one goes to 2400 points (I think, I took it when a perfect score was 1600). It would be pretty sad if you only had to get a 640 on a test that goes to 2400…

The debates on Vanderbilt Way (that’s in NYC, btw) about Yale v. Harvard are so much more stimulating than this UGA/GT drivel. They argue about who’s alums run the most fortune 500 countries, win the most nobel prizes, and have held the presidency most. Judging by the comments in the AJC and ungodly focus on football in this state, it will stay that way. Good luck with your seasons, I hope no Ivy leaguer eliminates your job this year

Dawgs,
When are you going to learn that if you are a Tech fan it does not mean you necessarily went to Tech. I love how every Tech fan is considered a nerd by nature and one who has no clue what a woman really is.
I tell you what if you met me in the street you would have no doubt that I am no nerd or at least you would not have the balls to call me one and thats a fact.
Since we are passing around judgement for all fans: I guess if you are a UGAY fan and drove up next to me in the street in that nifty ‘85 Ford Pickup, you would be asking me what drugs I have for sale as your missing your all important badmitten class.
Bottom line is you cannot compare the schools. One is a technical school and one isn’t its that simple. Sports will come and go at both and fans vary at both. Not all UGA fans are dumb rednecks or ghetto thugs and not all Tech fans are nerd virgins. I know tons of dudes that went to Tech who are married and have hot a* wives and I also know tons of UGA dudes in the same situation.
If having a better football team “at the moment” makes you really feel that much better about yourself (while trashing others) then more power to you. Fact of the matter is that it won’t last and Tech will eventually be the school to beat. Its called the “cycle” of sports.
You better get used to the idea.

ThUHA you win this mornings voice of truth prize. That was exactly the word I heard from a very reliable source. But hey, I’ve got a friend whose daughter made 1120 on the SAT and guess what….”sorry to inform you Ms. ___ we are not accepting enrollment at this time for middle class young adults such as yourself at your State University because we have to have room for someone that could not pass the state mandated graduation test but did graduate from a private school. Most importantly this student plays football and Mark Richt really wants him. Our suggestion is that you should have worked harder to get your SAT score up high enough to meet our enrollment standards for non football playing students. Thank you for your interest and we are enclosing a ticket form from the athletic association for the 2008 season. That fact that you will not be a student should not discourage you from being a Dawg fan because only 5% of the 92,000 in attendance each Saturday have even been inside a classoom at Georgia.

Wow, 620 SAT score? I had to score a minimum of 1100 just to get a sniff from Tech and with that score I had to enroll into the summer program to prove myself before my freshman year. And the SATs scoring format has changed since I took it in the 90’s. Every kid I know now scores over 1000 easily which use to be something special before. So 620? That is pathetic.

You know what’s really sad?? I know several very bright high school seniors who graduated last May and had their hopes up for getting in UGA. They are fine, outstanding students, with GPAs of 3.65, 3.7, and 3.72, and they all had SAT scores in the 1350 - 1400 range, with impeccable behavior records, and they each volunteer extensively in their community to help make it better. But, despite this, they were not able to get into glorious UGA because they were told their grades were not “good enough” - that it is very competitive to get into UGA (the Hope scholarship has a lot to do with the increased competition to get in). But you have some Dumb-a** athlete who barely graduates from HS (likely social promotion or teachers not wanting him in their classes again - so they promote him to get rid of him) and who doesn’t even make 800 on the SAT, and he gets in - not only does he get in - but gets “glorified” and a “free ride”. Now, where is the logic and the morals in that? That you can have students that did everything right, paid their dues by all the late night work and studying for the last 10 years, and they can’t get into the school they want to. Something is wrong with this picture. UGA sells its soul for 12 football games or 35 basketball games a year. Pathetic.

Who really cares about scores? If a person is an athlete, that person makes lots of money for the school. If you are not an athlete, then you get your ticket punched for that job. It is NOT about learning! GET it stupid! Most graduates do not work in their field of study so a person with a AA degree is just as good or better; perhaps they have real time experience. College is overated! It’s only about money and prestige. Oh and of course recruiting more liberals. If a person graduated with a BA/BS in 1999. He is not a college trained computer operator or user. Hmmmm…just get your ticket punched and you can teach school…LMAO

The exchanges posted here speak volumes to the level of the minds who follow sports.
None of this makes any difference - it has no MEANING in life.
The sad part is there are sports supporters from all colleges who believe that it is acceptable to let students into college only because they can compete athletically. It is all about the money. These athletes do NOT play for you or anyone else - they are in it for the money too.
Sad that our country has given over to the voyeur experience of sports.
We are a doomed society!

Reuben Houston was kicked out of school and kicked off the team. He went to court and got a court order to be readmitted to TECH and to his scholarship position on the team. Even then, he was only permitted to make a brief appearance in a half dozen games. He definitely was not a welcome traveler.
Now then, all this rumble back and forth about student athletes. The term doesn’t apply at any Georgia or SEC football program that I’m aware of except possibly Vandy. It’s a business, guys. Gotta buy that 10-win coach.
