Sandy Creek WR Lane skipping ‘08 football, hopes Tech’s OK with it

Sandy Creek wide receiver Braxton Lane said he hopes his decision to skip his senior season of high school football won’t affect his recruitment at Georgia Tech.

“I don’t know if they know yet,” Lane said Sunday night. “If they do [back off], then that’s their decision, but I know not all of them will. I’m not worried.”

Lane, who plans to use the fall to focus on baseball, says he has offers from nine Division 1-A schools, including Tech, Auburn, Michigan and Oregon. He’s one of only 33 recruits who received a grade of A or better in the AJC’s Georgia 150. He caught 55 passes as a junior at Sandy Creek, the school that graduated former Tech All-American receiver Calvin Johnson.

Tech is recruiting Lane as an A-Back, which would have him lining up outside the tackles and going in motion, often receiving passes or pitchouts from the quarterback.

Tech has no commitments from its A-Back targets, which include Orwin Smith of Alabama and Al-Terek McBurse of Florida. …

If he’ll skip football to play baseball he doesn’t sound very committed. I’d be off that kid with the quickness if I were Tech.

I thought College Football teams recruited HS football players, no?

Braxton, As a Tech fan I wish you well in your pursuit of baseball. But I for one hope that Tech pulls their offer for you. First thing I thought was that he had to work on his grades. But when I read that he wants to focus on baseball and give up his senior season in football? Good luck son, I hope you have thought this all the way through. Maybe some lesser 1-A school will give you what you want. Tech doesn’t need anyone who doesn’t have the desire to play football.

Tech, Even though I am a true DAWG I would say to lose this kids phone number and move on. You are a class act institution and should expect more from your recruits.

Tech should take a year off from this guy and then forget him entirely.Nothing wrong with plaing baseball- that is where the money is but to thin k that a team will not lose interest is kinda dumb. he may be dumb enough to go to Georgia. They still are queer for George Lombard.

Y’all need to get a grip. Why isn’t he playing football this year? Because is a pretty good baseball player. Actually, he will probably be drafted pretty high in the baseball draft next spring. He spent the summer playing on a top traveling baseball team and he just participated in the AFLAC all-american game. Since he was playing baseball this summer he missed the Sandy Creek summer workouts. Sandy Creek issues a six game suspension if you miss the summer workouts so it doesn’t really make sense for him to play. Chip knew what was going on the entire time, but he can play stupid in the paper.

Yech, get a grip. He is a WR. No player with aspirations to play offense in the NFL or Arena Bowl for that matter will want to play in the Wing-T. Y’all will NEVER get an elite WR-type athlete and it will be a struggle for the Wing-T man to get an elite running back. Heck, y’all should have kept Chan Gailey. Y’all will be wishing for Reggie Ball back in about six more weeks.

I thought baseball was played in the spring? I must have been sick that day when the fall baseball memo came out?

The decision is his to make right or wrong. But after seeing the Under Armour game yesterday… 0 for 5 . Well, you make the call.

Lane appears to be an OUTSTANDING football player, but only a so so Baseball player.

Sandy Creek does issue some penalities but not 6 games.

Chip knew what was going on the entire time, but he can play stupid in the paper.

He never said he don’t know what was going on. His comments about Ken Swilling were not out of line.

I wonder how Lane’s former teammates (other seniors) feel about his decision?

It’s a double red flag that he’s fine with letting Tech find this out through the newspaper. If he wants to play baseball that’s fine. Props to him for being good at both; just don’t expect a football coach to be excited about it.

He never said he don’t know what was going on

Well, here is the direct quote from the article:
*Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker said he has heard rumors that Lane would spurn football this season and concentrate on baseball.

“We don’t really know what he’s going to do,” Walker said.*

Sounds like someone playing dumb to me. He knew all along.

By the way, you don’t get invited to play in games like those by just being a so-so baseball player. Only 38 players got invited. When you get invited to play in elite all-star games don’t you think that makes you an elite prospect? Sometimes logical thinking is avoided by those with skewed opinions. Holcomb is pretty much off base on that one. Sounds like he has Chip in his ear who is trying to cover his backside.

The main issue is Lane was away for the summer playing baseball. Walker wanted him working out with the team. Same thing happened last year. Heck, according to Walker WR is his deepest position so they shouldn’t miss a beat.

And as for Yech, no elite player is going to want to come and play in the Wing-T. It isn’t happening.

so many haters on this high school kid. are you folks that jealous of this kids talents and opportunities. maybe he will be the one who uses them instead of them using him and it is about time.

Folks, there are all kinds of reasons why a kid would decide to back out of his last year of football. It matters very very little in reality, so maybe we should all stop attacking this young man and let things pan out as they will.

I’ve been to a few Tech football practices and they are brutal. Tech is looking for tough guys. Not sure how the coaching staff will look at this.

Did he miss 6 games last year?

Do you know when all these comments took place?

Don’t blame anyone. The kid don’t want to play and leave it at that.

If Lane’s as good a baseball player as advertised, his playing college football will be a moot point anyway, since he’ll likely opt for the big bucks of professional baseball.

Why in the world would the coaches be so upset with Braxton when MANY of these same coaches are the very ones who coach the Sandy Creek baseball teams? I feel we as the adults should support the kids who want to play other sports. The more sports kids are involved in, the less on the streets and in trouble. While I can understand their dissappointment with Braxton not being at football practice, I feel while he is still active with another sport, they should support him instead of penalizing him with 6 games. I know of a kid at this same school, while he is busy during baseball tyouts and practice he participates in another sport but is not penalized at all; even makes the team without “trying out”.

One of the best natural baseball talents I have seen in 20+ years in North GA. Good student, good citizen and a gifted athlete. When I heard the news I was happy for the kid. He will have options following next years MLB draft. I hope he is drafted low enough to play a couple of baseball seasons at Tech and loses his FB cleats in the meantime.
