Derrick Favors considering UGA, Ga. Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
South Atlanta basketball All-American Derrick Favors announced his first list of schools Friday that he is considering with Georgia and Georgia Tech still in the running.
The 6-foot-9 center is considered the No. 1 recruit in the country by Scout.com recruiting services heading into the upcoming season. Hornets coach Michael Reddick said Favors is still considering the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets, along with Florida, Florida State, Kentucky, North Carolina State, Memphis, UCLA, UConn and defending national champion Kansas.
Favors, who averaged nearly a triple-double last season, has set up visits with Georgia (Aug. 28) and Georgia Tech on September 27, according to Reddick.
“We are getting it to a workable list,” Reddick said. “We are hoping to get it down some more.”
Reddick said that Favors haven’t decided if he will sign during the early period in November or wait until April.
“We are hoping to do it early, but we want him to take as much time as needed to make a decision,” Reddick said.

Derrick, come play in the premier basketball conference…The ACC. With you on board next year, Georgia Tech can easily make another Final Four run. If you want to play for a second rate program and coach, then go to uga. If you want to play in front of 250 fans…go to uga. If you want to win…go to Tech. It’s that simple!

JackASSbuzz, when was the last time Tech beat UGA in Basketball? As a matter of fact, The ACC doesn’t stack up the the SEC in any sport — it used to be understood that ACC was to basketball what the SEC was to football, and we were all fairly content (complacent). But the SEC is much more dominant now in all sports!!
Tech sucks!

Those cuts at the good ol’ AJC are too evident.

When is the last time the mighty ACC won the national championship in basketball? SEC rules in football and basketball, not to mention baseball. Has the mighty ACC ever won a national championship in baseball? Don’t think so. Thriller dome, the only thrills that have come from that rat trap lately has been UGA winning an SEC championship there. Tech is a non-factor in the ACC now, and will be as long as you have that shoe salesman running around acting like a coach. He shouldn’t be allowed to coach on a floor named after Bobby C. Tech fans want to win at any sport so badly, that the mention of a top recruit visiting their campus makes them run off at the mouth about how pathetic their athetic program is. Atlanta is well known as Losersville USA, and unfortunately Tech is part of that.

hey, who cares!!! do your research partner, who has won national championships in football between uga and tech? it’s not uga. thats all that matters is championships ang the fleabags are still chasing tech. you pups will get hammered out at asu and choke against florida again. you won’t win a championship or even the sec this year. 9-3 and headed to the outback bowl! don’t sleep on tech at the end of the season even if it is in athens. tech will have a handle on this offense by thanksgiving. i don’t care that uga has two weekes to prepare. tech is gonna run the spread option down mark richt’s throat!! hey uga fans, you remember how west virgina torched your defense? pj will have this offense rolling eventually and i look forward to seeing this good but overrated uga team fall short with such high expectations. you guys are going to be sick of seeing nesbitt and dwyer rolling up yardage against your d!! don’t sing it uga, bring it! no chan gailey and reggie ball on the flats. it’s time to turn this series around with pj at the helm. go scratch you bunch of fleabags!!

Seems to me that UNC won the national title back in 2005? In fact, (2) different ACC schools have won the national title since 2000. The SEC only (1) school w/ mighty Florida taking back to back. So don’t even compare. Top to bottom, the ACC is dominant compared to the SEC. How about Duke being rated the most successful school in the modern era according to most experts. So please don’t compare the SEC to the ACC in basketball. That’s like saying the ACC is better in football than the SEC. No contest…SEC rules in football. So leave b-ball in its place….on tobacco road.

Message to Derek Favors:
You are the #1 recruit in the nation. GT already has 4 highly ranked commitments with great character. If you should decide to commit to GT, you will be the top dog of the #1 recruiting class in America. GT is an excellent school with a solid basketball tradition and you would be playing in the ACC. You and the other 4 could make everyone forget about the Fab Five from Michigan. Plus you will be in Atlanta which is one of the best cities in America. Many professional atheletes have decided to live in Atlanta during the off season. The coaches are great, committed to what is best for each player on the team and the future is very bright for GT basketball. You have many options, good luck deciding what is best for you and your family. I sincerely hope you thoroughly evaluate what GT has to offer. Enjoy the ride and make the most out of your life!!

Um YellerSkeeters… Tech beat UGAg in bball the season before last you idiot… 78-69. Oh, and you are also a fool talking about SEC baseball after you got your butt handed to you by Fresno State… UGAg’s baseball team this year was a fluke… GT had all underclassmen and still had a better record. UGAg is losing EVERYONE worth mentioning… What an idiot. When was the last time UGAg had a final four appearance? Florida won back to back titles but that’s ALL for the SEC… ACC is always in the final four and/or in the national title game. Move on. Just because you have some delusional ideas of UGAg being so great, doesn’t mean it’s true… LOSER

You Tech punks have absolutely NOTHING to talk about. Your football is a joke (and will remain that way with Paul Johnson), and your basketball has dropped to new lows since that lucky Final Four year. UGA hoops is on the rise big time, and there is absolutely ZERO chance Tech can compete with UGA football. Pray that Paul J. can win once in the next 6 or 7 years. That’s about all the chance you have. He has done NOTHING to slow the recruiting juggernaut of Mark Richt, and no one sees any change in that anytime soon. Spare me…Coach Richt or Coach Johnson?! Not even close.

Derrick,
Look at two other recent one-and-dones at Georgia Tech: J. Crittenton and T. Young. Research how Coach Paul Hewitt keeps in touch with the two. He’s a great person to have in your corner for your entire career. He’s sincerely interested in seeing you succeed whether you play for four years at Tech or for one. Good luck in whatever you decide.

GT fans talking trash. What a joke? When was the last time GT defeated UGA in football? The last time I checked UNC and GT are not the same schools. That is like UGA bragging about UF winning back to back titles. That is silly. When was the last time GT won a conference title? UGA won the SEC title. UGA is ranked number 1 in football. UGA played for the national title in baseball. UGA dominates tennis, gymnastics, and many other sports. GT won a co-title back in 1990 and everyone won knows in a head to head matchup Colorado would have destroyed the bugs. Give it up GT fans. Your conference is weak much like your team. Who is considered a better player Chris Bosh, Puke Marbury, Spider Salley, Kenny Anderson, or the HUMAN HIGHLIGHT FILM, MR. Wilkins? How far did GT make it in the Big Dance last season? The truth is that all the UGA programs are rising. Number 1 in football, conference championship in basketball, and number 2 in baseball. Enough said.
By Dawgtime

Word of wisdom: Do you really want to have former players in your showroom that did not want to stay at GT for the duration of their scholarship? Most of the mentioned players left TECH ASAP. Also, it is a lost cause to use old players as a source of bragging. Mr. Favors is a young man that never saw Herschel Walker dominate college football or Reggie Ball demonstating the inability to count to four. How is ole Joe Hamilton doing with his great degree? In all reality, Derrick Favors is the product of a good family. He is a great young man that will make the best decision for him and his family. In terms of basketball, he has some developing to do. 6’9 post players need time. Jeremy Price and Derrick Favors would make a great low post combo. In terms of UGA players lacking knowledge check out Dave Bliss, Steve Newman, and the Kessler brothers. All were honor students.

When was the last time GT won a baseball national title? NEVER. You continue to brag about UNC and Duke, yet both schools laugh at playing GT. GT and UNC are not the same. In terms of the GATOR fans talking trash, did you enjoy our entire team dancing all over your state. We have to play in Florida each year. Fair? I don’t think so. How is Teebow’s arm? Bring him back to be whipped again. I read that URBAN the turban is crying about the game still this year in his book. That is pathetic. I guess Spurrier running up the score on helpless teams and then belittling them in press conferences was okay. URBAN the turban won with Ron Zook’s kids. Les Miles and URBAN need a shoulder to cry on. Those men are in charge of great programs yet they are constantly complaining and making excuses. Take a lesson from CMR on class and tact.

Hey dawtime…how many UGA grads are on the US Olympic team? That would be 0. Quit with the UGA has better basketball than Ga Tech. Why don’t we count the number of NCAA Appearances or Final Four appearances in the past 10 or 20 years. How many times have either won the regular season or the conference tournament? UGA gets up for the ech basketball game every year at home and has held serve. But, come’on you can’t possibly think the UGA program is better. You have had a few blue chips to th NBA and Tech has had many more.
Oh, and that coment about Hewitt being a shoe salesman?…..well the past 2 years 2 players he developed are IN the NBA and another got back from that title game team. So if its hoops we are talking, no comparison. ACC rules and Tech is strong contributor. Just wait for the NCAA’s and even when Tech is ranked low it is said that the teams do not want to play Ga Tech. When is the last time it was said a higher seed was “afraid” to play UGA? That would be NEVER!
So, I agree your little gymdogs and other otehr sports are really good and Football is tops program in the country. But that has nothing to do with the games on the pine.
So Favors please, come on to Tech you can help propel us to greatness on the national scale, not greatness in the conference. Besides, would you rather play Duke and UNC a couple of times a year or ‘Bama MSU and Fla? I would think Duke and UNC games would be more fun to play more often.
Glad to finally see some coverage about this big time recruit in th AJC!

He is not seriously consdiring UGA beacause they suck so bad. He is coming to GT and help GT reach the final 4. UGA sucked last year and won the weak SEC. They lost their best player and their second best play got kicked off plus another UGA bball player left because he knew they were going to suck so bad. Leave up to UGAY fans to bring up football in the bball thread. UGA a rise in bball haaha, those 3 star recruits make UGA a rise in ball how? GT is bring in 5 and 4 star prospects.

THe TIDE?? haha….. wow actually AL is one of my favorite teams in SEC basketball but i mean really…. has any program ever UNDERPERFORMED to expectations like AL’s program??
Perhaps if they actually got a pt guard that could shoot might help.
And im a GT AND UGA fan…. because i go to neither school…but im from Atlanta so im more of a GT fan. But you better believe im going for UGA to win it all in football this year!
And lets be honest here fellow GT fans….no ACC champ is ever again going to be “voted” to the title game over USC, OU, Texas, OSU, or the SEC champ (outside of recent-history rich FSU and Miami) until a playoff system is in place!
So all you GT football fans happy with the BCS…. just because UGA got screwed…. make me SICK!!
BUT lets be real here people, if Derrick wanted to dominate in football hed choose UGA.
But hes a BASKETBALL player….and therefore should go to GT!!!!!!!!! I know you wanna play infront of your family and friends everynight Derrick….and lets face it…with our recruiting class in 09 we have a good shot at making a final 4 run again!

I am an UGA fan, but I do not want any one and done players at my school. It will not help the program to win championships. Leave the one and done players to GT. That is what they specialized in since the days of Bobby Cremins. UGA needs guys that will be in the program at least 3 years. So they will develop enough to be a solid college basketball player. We want the program to progress not regress. Thank you for the consideration Mr. Favors but, No thank you. Have a nice one season somewhere else besides Athens.

There is no reason for this Tech fan to belittle the UGA basketball program, I think history has already done that for you. Derrick, come to GT, every game is a sell out. We play with the big boys, where every ACC game will make Sportscenter highlights. Do you really want to go on the road to face teams like Ole Miss, Auburn, and Arkansas? Or do you want to showcase your talents against the best players in the country at UNC, Duke, Maryland, and NC State. We already have the pieces in place to make another Final Four run. Nobody likes a “fixer-upper” which is what is going on in Athens. Stay in Atlanta, play in front of your friends and family and continue the GT legacy.

Wow congrats we had lost Crittenton, Young, and West to the NBA. I don’t see UGA beating Tech anytime soon with the talent.
HAHAA UGA is arena is not even close to as loud as the thrillerdome. When Favors went to a UGA game last year he was probably like WTF my middle school team was louder than this.
Plus Favors, Lawal, Shumpert, Miller, and hopefully Boynton would be one of the best teams in the nation and even if we dont get boynton cause we still have udofia, rice, oliver, peacock ect. UGA doesnt have a PG that good get favors the ball and that is why Favors is coming to GT!!!!!

Chris, I am a Tech fan and I really DON’T want him to come to Tech because the last thing Tech needs is another one-and-done. We like to develop players at Tech, not rebuild EVERY OTHER YEAR! Let the mutts have him. We’ll still own them at bball! THWG

I am another Tech grad and fan. I agree with Nick. At Tech we want students who also play basketball. We don’t need basketball players who don’t care about their classes. One-and-dones are welcome to go somewhere else. But, on the other hand, if Derrick does get interested in a four year degree, we are a top notch school that also has a very good basketball program. We want to continue to produce educated men and women who can make real contributions to our nation.

Once you go to the Association, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to play regularly in front of friends and family. Let them experience your talents in person for at least one more magical season — at the Thrillerdome!

Derrick, just remember, God forbid a torn ACL is in your future… GT: an ENGINEERING school, top 5 in the NATION…UGA a BUSINESS school?? Not even ranked in the top 20 in the US…back to GT, the ENGINEERING school…GT’s Business program…you guessed it minimum wagers, ranked #19 in the US! But hey they have a top notch gymnastics program!!…stupid rednecks…

UGAblowa we didn’t lose rio (mario west) to the NBA… he graduated, and walked on to the Hawks, just like he walked on to Georgia Tech.
It seems like this guy is all about the NBA, but seeing this recruiting class shape up for 2009 is getting exciting. We could have the best recruiting class in the nation, and with the young team we have, we could very easily become a national championship contender… The Thrilladome is going to be rocking like never before. GO JACKETS! THWG!!

Yes Corey which means we lost Rio to the NBA. He is not on the team anymore and is in the NBA.
