Apalachee LB Gresham shocks Tech, switches to South Carolina

Apalachee linebacker Chaun Gresham abruptly switched his commitment from Georgia Tech to South Carolina on Friday.

“I just felt like it was the right thing to do,” Gresham said. “I loved everything about South Carolina camp last month, and haven’t been able to stop thinking about the place ever since.”

Gresham said he talked over the phone with Georgia Tech assistant Brian Jean-Mary to let him know about his change of heart. “[Tech] was disappointed with me, but they respected my decision.”

Gresham is the nephew of George Rogers, who won the 1980 Heisman Trophy at South Carolina. However, Gresham, who is a member of the AJC’s Super Southern 100 and ranked as the country’s No. 47 linebacker by Rivals, said his famous family connection had no effect on switching to the Gamecocks.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Gresham also holds offers from Alabama, Clemson, Tennessee and Vanderbilt, among others.

Friday was a big day for South Carolina schools in Georgia, as Baldwin linebacker Corico Hawkins committed to Clemson over Florida and Auburn, among others.

As a Tech fan, I will say good for him, b/c this process is tough on young men, and I am glad for them wherever they end up. Also as a Tech fan, I will say that although we would have been VERY glad to have him (obviously), this one doesn’t hurt TOO much, just b/c of the incredible LB recruiting we have done for 3 years straight. Good luck to this young man…I hope he beats UGA and has a fine college career.

Dodgeball anyone. I hear that PJ has a new recruiting tool — kickball & badminton in lieu of football practice. He will also integrate ballet for the receivers — with a touch of tai-chi to break up the monotony of “practice.”

He’s doing this for his own sanity. Watching the hopeless, hapless lot is very depressing — got to interject some fun when the season looms large, and 0-11 is the likely scenario for the Skeeters. What a wreck

I see where Tech has avoided a redshirt year a second time under a little known NCAA rule with the transfer from Virginia Tech. Tech brought in Tashard Choice from Oklahoma under this same obscure rule because he allegedly had a bedridden, sick mother. After Tashard came home, for three years, all we read about was how his supposed ailing mother baked pies for the offensive linemen at Tech. Best we can tell, today she is healthy as a horse and enjoying some of Tashard’s NFL signing bonus. Don’t get me wrong, I wish Tashard’s mother good health and prosperity, but it does call into question Tech’s ethics ONCE AGAIN when Ms. Choice rivals Paula Dean in the kitchen and attends football games at will. I guess this really reveals how desperate Tech is. Perhaps, another 2 years of NCAA probation for skirting the rules is right around the corner.

Nevertheless, get ready for your 8th beat down in a row this year Jackets. Just like Brooking, Rogers, Johnson, Houston, Choice and others, the new Hokie transfer will never know what it feels like to beat Georgia.

It is very simple why a player would decommit from one school and commit to another - South Carolina pays better but not as good as Clemson, as shown by the recent recruiting rankings.

THIS was a great catch for usc. i guess the desire to play in the SEC and a much better campus life were the draws.

i do wish he had stayed at tech since it is not a SEC SCHOOL.

NEITHER CASE Dawgs prevail with both schools in ‘08.

Oh sure Chad. Here we go again. The academic excuse. You have a short memory Chad. GT has a special academic track for these guys. Funnel them into non progress course to keep them eligible. But seriously. Maybe if you are at such a disadvantage exercise one of the three options listed. 1) Give up football at this level. 2) Drop to a lower level where you MIGHT be competitive. If not exercise #3. 3) STFU with the whining and excuse making. The real academic schools like Vandy, Duke, Stanford, et al don’t cry like a bunch of little bit^hes. Losers cry, whine, and make excuses.

Often these kids feel pressure to make a quick decision; either from coaches or themselves (wait or take the bird in the hand?) No kid should be criticized for changing his mind. Who among us made rock solid unchangeable decisions at 17? and no school should feel slighted of someone falls off. this guy probably changed his mind because he liked the ice cream machine at USC or something like that.

I highly doubt that the quality of education factor even entered his mind..in fact, you Tech fans should realize that as obsessed as you are about your superior education, most football players who are really good, couldnt care less and its a non factor. Maybe you guys should call up Wake Forest to see how they manage to win with MUCH higher academic standards than Tech. By the way, did any of you Tech fans notice that the average incoming SAT scores of incoming freshman this year were HIGHER AT UGA THAN TECH? Dang..what will be your excuse now, lack of sex due to no women on campus?

Seriously, would you guys please get better, you hurt our BCS poll schedule difficulty rating every yr with your 6-6 mediocrity.

I’m guessing some of you guys like YellerSkeeters are PeterEaters!, Tech Lies, Cheats and Deals and Ghetto have personal vendettas against GT, like you flunked out, couldn’t get in or an Indian family bought out the gas station or the Dairy Queen you worked at and fired you! And look up oxymoron before you use it in a sentence. I know English is the only academic department at UGA that is ranked near the top of country, so I’m guessing you didn’t go there. An example of the correct usage of the word would be “Student Athlete” at UGA. See?

Kid is probably looking at earlier playing time at USuCk anyhow since GT is pretty set at LB.

If GT only gets Watts this year we will be fine since Barnes, Jefferson, Jackson, Rocker, Griffin, Tongo, Bowen all have a MINIMUM of two years left at GT and we have Munroe, Sylvester, and Machen in now as true freshmen.

By Brewer for President

August 9, 2008 10:24 AM | Link to this

By the way, did any of you Tech fans notice that the average incoming SAT scores of incoming freshman this year were HIGHER AT UGA THAN TECH? I haven’t seen that. If it is true, here is something to think about: 1) The new SAT is now 1/3 writing test, meaning some jerk reads it and gives his/her opinion on your skill as a writer. It’s just some jerk’s opinion, kind of like the SI preseason rankings. 2) GT has a huge percentage of foreign students who speak English as a 2nd language. I work with foreign engineers. Brilliant minds, horrible English writing skills.
3) Engineers hate writing anyway and GT’s main draw is the engineering schools that are ranked near the top every year. And one more thing: Stop whining about the transfers. The NCAA approves it. If there was a problem, they could shoot it down. If you think there are any GT Homers at that level in the NCAA, you’re crazy.

All you bozos who think that UGA is just as tough and rigorous as Tech—I have a degree from both places (most of you I bet don’t have one from either), and I KNOW, firsthand, that Tech was a LOT tougher.

And don’t talk about “special academic tracks”—not until you field a team of Terry students against our M-Train.

And if the degree programs at Tech are a “non-factor” to someone that (I presume) thinks they can go pro, well, good riddance.

To Brewer for President,

As for your stupid Dairy Queen comment, I am an investment banker for a major Wall Street firm and have been for 21 years. I worked four years in NY after graduating from UGA with a BBA and MBA in finance. I bet you are shocked. Odds are I make A LOT more money than you and with my net worth I could buy you about 5 times over. The only reason that I mention this is the ridiculous Dairy Queen comment and the constant mental snobbery that you Techies love to espouse.

You guys suck at everything athletically and are the most sour people that I have ever come in contact with. You are a bunch of “know it all” losers who think that everybody else is ignorant. When I think about it who could blame you. Odds are you are married to some fat pig and you pull for a 6-6 Tech football team every year. Your enjoyment each fall comes from pulling against Georgia (the old addition by subtraction adage) and hoping the Dawgs lose every Saturday. The bad news for you is that you only have a weekend or two each fall where you are truly happy.

I got news for you. Prepare for another bad fall and the 8th straight beat down in November.

Visor Boy:

Don’t forget that “investment banker for a major Wall Street firm” is code for UNEMPLOYED. This is 2008, not 1988.

Bet he found his size-zero trophy wife on the fourth try, or hooked up with some rich cougar.

And I bet he will be pulling for Jax State and G-W even though it will hurt UGA’s SoS and BCS chances. Talk about biting off your nose to spite your face…

Good thing I moved my retirement to a DIY firm and put my Terry MBA to use myself, instead of trusting it to some bozo like him who would probably be pushing his company’s dog food on me. Haven’t lost a nickel during this downturn. Country folks (as opposed to uppity silk-stocking types and rednecks) can survive…

Tech makes up a lot of academic disadvantage being in a major metro area. On top of that you don’t think parents notice the increased problems players are having in towns like Athens and Columbia. Use to be we send our kids to country towns to get away from arrest possibilities not now the Barney Fifes are out to make a name for themselves. You see far more minority enforcement in Atlanta, that is far too busy and sophisticated to worry about some of the things that seem to get the athletes in Athens and Columbia in trouble and on the front page If I am a black guy you think I am going to like Athens or Columbia or even Clemson. You think a Jewish guy wouldn’t pick Miami over Salt Lake City or a Baptist wouldn’t take Atlanta over New York.

Old Gold,

The directions are simple. Hit post once and wait. You dumb arse.

I bet you sit at home with your 60-something blue haired wife and dream of the Bobby Dodd days. You retired about 5-10 years ago and earn your $60,000 pension from the local power company. Thus, you can afford to attend the Tech games but only because you get a free hat, hotdog and Coke at your pitiful stadium. The same stadium that your Athletic Department cannot pay the debt service on so it is nearly bankrupt. You constantly complain that you could do a better job of calling plays than your current coaching staff and throw bottles and fish at the officials and opposing team when things don’t go your way. The truth is you know nothing about football.

Jabster, you still live in your parent’s basement and ride your 10-speed to work. The only thing you ever played with growing up is YOURSELF.

As a UGA student who has seen him play for two years, Chaun made a tough choice. It wasn’t an academic decision because he could cut it at the academically rigorous GT. I think it was a situation as for what fits him best. Much like UGA and GT, GT and SCAR (USC plays in LA) academically are like apples and oranges: ones a liberal arts school and the others an engineering school. You have to look at Atlanta vs. Columbia, GT’s facilities vs. SCAR’s facilities, and both schools unique campus life. Those were probably better indicators as to why he chose SCAR. It wasn’t academics or SEC vs. ACC

To the person or persons from this site coming to Yankees Beat, and posting your Southern baseball nonsense., please remember how insignificant Atlanta is compared toNew York City. Keep yourselves having relations with your relatives, enjoy bottles of Coke 9or snorting it), and Waffling along watching reruns of Hee Haw. Keep your losing Hillbillys away from us.

The bigger picture being ignored in all of the idiotic back-and-forths is that the NCAA apparently does not care when coaches continue to press recruits after the recruit has committed to a school. Hell, does the word “commitment: MEAN anything any more???

Spurrier is a douchebag - we ALL know that. By going after kids who have already declared their intentions as to a college choice, he just cements his reputation.

The kid backed out on his word. Spurries proved again that he has no ethics. May both parties reap the rewards they deserve.

A team building exercise in Athens consists of cows, duct tape, alcohol, and eventually two or three arrests.

The college football nation regularly sees the low class of ugay on these Tech blogs every day. In addition, that low class registers on the sports section of every newspapers by the large number of arrests made of their so-called athletic scholars.

There is nothing that Tech, or UFL, or any other school has to do to make ugay look bad. You guys do it very well all on your own.

TECH LIES: Please find time from your very impt schedule to be on here often. You’re very intimidating and I’m sure I can learn a lot from your vast WALL STEET experience. UGA always manages to find a new jackass to raise the bar for all of her other asses.

Ha. When someone says on this blog they are an investment banker on Wall St. that usually means they stand on one of the corners of Wall St with a sign that says “I will wurk for food.” Please take your pompous redneck a$$ off our board. Your wife told me you have a small penis.

UGA is the #1 team in the USA this year ,and after we win it this year, guess what, we will be ranked #1 again next year and win it all again. I know Tech fans have a hard time dealing with that and I really feel sorry for you. Im starting to worry that some of you will jump off tall buildings or have nervous breakdowns. This is a sports blog ,if your team sucks, dont turn it into the financial reports of Georgia blog or my school is harder than your school blog. Just accept that your team sucks and move on.

I think it is certainly ok for a kid tl decommit as long as it is not on National Signing Day or in January. These are kids with tough decisions. Every school looks good and the last one you visit looks even better.

And stop all that “once you commit you should stop looking around because your momma didn’t keep looking round after your dad asked her to marry him” sh**! This is not a life long marriage. This is a school that will last 4 years and not the rest of your life. These are not grown ups making a decision these are 17 year old young men with people coming at them from all sides.

TECH LIES; I don’t doubt you are in investment banking. It is fairly obvious from your blogg that you are a stupid A$$. Now back to the banking business, looking at the market, you and your buds, must have made some pretty stupid investments.’Nough said. I retired in’96 at age 49, only reason for it was I was tired of working and did’t need any more money. As for buying and selling each other, I don’t buy what I don’t want or need and and certaintly not anything that is worthless and overpriced. HeHeHeHeHe

Wow UGA fans are the best. Why is a guy that works on Wall Street spending his time blogging on an AJC message board. The fact of the matter is that before Mark Richt got to UGA they had’nt done anything in 20 years, but the fans were just as cocky and arrogant during those 20 years as they are now that they are title contnders. UGA made a great hire in Richt and GT made a huge mistake hiring Chan Gailey since he has been nothing but average his whole coachig career. Like when he took a 3 time super bowl champion and turned them into a wild card team that lost to Arizona in the playoffs. And what is all this crap about how Tech should drop down divisions so they can be competetive and how they are so terrible at all sports. Give me a break. In 2004 the bball team played for a national title. In 2006 Tech won 9 games and played for a conference title. That season UGA had to go on a clutch late game drive where they converted 3 3rd downs and 1 4th down to win the game in Athens. That doesnt exactly sound like a dominant butt kicking to me, but I know I could never dream to know as much about sports as a brilliant UGA fan. As a matter of fact the last 4 games between the 2 teams have been very competitive. And to try and bring up stuff about Tashard Choices mom is beyond classless. Maybe she recovered from her illness, that does happen sometimes, but I guess you had access to her medical records and know that it was all a scam. What a bitter prick you must be. Maybe you should wonder how UGA players keep getting their suspensions decreased because they are running out of players for the first 2 games because the arrest keep piling up. And I dont think the GT football is struggling for recruits. They had a top 15 recruiting class 2 years ago and even though this kid changed his mind they have already started to sign a really nice class for next year. So get your facts straight. And not all Tech fans make excuses about academics, I know UGA is a tough school as well.
