Tampa TE says competition at UGA won’t factor in recruiting decision

Orson Charles of Tampa, Fla., said he was not concerned after hearing another one of the nation’s top tight ends was scheduled to visit Georgia on Thursday.

Arthur Fontaine of Dartmouth, Mass., ranked as the nation’s No. 4 tight end by Rivals, is making his second trip of the summer to Athens. Charles holds the No. 1 ranking and is one of Georgia’s top targets, too.

“I’m not scared of competition,” Charles said. “Let’s say [Fontaine] committed to Georgia. That wouldn’t affect my recruiting decision; there’s competition everywhere. If I decided to go to Georgia, too, then I’m sure [Fontaine] and I would be friends, and we’d both know the best player would get on the field.”

Fontaine and Charles offer different attributes.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Fontaine has a bigger frame and is known for his blocking skills. He is difficult to cover in short passing situations. Fontaine’s four finalists are the Bulldogs, Boston College, Virginia and Maryland.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Charles has so much athleticism that although most of his 29 offers are at tight end, some schools, including LSU and Louisville, project him to play wide receiver. Charles, who has not revealed any favorites, is teammates at Plant High with quarterback Aaron Murray, who has committed to Georgia.

I would be great to have both. They could be used in different sitituations. There is no higher calling than being a DAWG

probably can’t take both, will take the first one that commits and it’s looking like it’ll be Fontaine. That’s fine, because we need a blocking TE more in the SEC anyhow. Remember Ben Watson. There’s just not enough scholarships to go around. It’s too bad that we redshirt almost every player meaning more 5 year players. Oh well, Fontaine looks like a player too.

I hope AF’s visit today went well. The more I have read and considered this kid the more I like him.

Georgia Tech is also recruiting a special tight-end out of San Francisco named Page Buggerton. Page is 4’11” 245 lbs. and sports a 44” waist, primarily to contain his supply of Depends. Page was quoted recently as saying, “I’m a big fan of Georgia Tech, because before every practice they have a free showing of Brokeback Mountain, which is my favorite movie.”
