Defending champion LSU tries to raid state’s top-rated prospects
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
LSU’s national championship is having a big impact on the school’s football recruiting effort in Georgia.
Cornerback Branden Smith of Atlanta’s Washington High and linebacker Jarvis Jones of Carver High of Columbus, arguably the state’s top two prospects, participated in LSU’s camp earlier this week. The Tigers already have commitments from two of the state’s top players, Tucker wide receiver Drayton Calhoun and Peachtree Ridge linebacker Kevin Minter.
“They [LSU] are the champs, and when the national champion comes after you, then I would think most players would have to take a serious look,” Minter said.
LSU always has recruited the state, with five Georgia players on its 2008 roster. But the Tigers are drawing serious interest from several of the state’s elite prospects. Attracting Smith and Jones to camp was a coup for LSU coach Les Miles. Also in attendance, but only observing, was Carver of Atlanta’s Darren Myles Jr., one of the nation’s top safety prospects.
“I wanted to go to LSU because I had to see what it was all about,” Smith said. “Everything speaks for itself there. They win national championships; they have great facilities and have a great coaching staff. It was my first time there, and I enjoyed the experience.”
LSU rarely beats out Georgia in head-to-head battles for home-grown players, but appears to have accomplished that with the commitment from Calhoun, who initially wanted to go to Georgia but committed after visiting LSU last February. Georgia is still recruiting Calhoun, who says he is Baton Rouge-bound.
“I’m 100-percent with LSU; it’s the best place for me,” he said.
Smith and Jones roomed together at the LSU camp.
“We talked about a lot of things, such as how recruiting was going and our expecations for our senior season,” Smith said. “We didn’t really talk about playing at [LSU together], but we both had a good time.”

It must be nice to have that title, since they stole our spot in the BCS title game that we had rightfully earned, with 8 straight wins and moving up to the #2 spot.
But then again, if Mark Richt cried and whined like Urban Crier down in Gainesville, then we might have been in New Orleans for the right to pound Ohio State.

Keep whining Dawg fans, you guys are ridiculous. All you had to do was win one more SEC game last season and maybe you would have had the trip to the Big Easy one week later, instead, LSU won (in case you forgot) the conference and because of West Virginia and Missouri’s foolishness, was selected to appear in the BCS Championship Game…those are the facts…deal with it.
You’ll certainly get your chance to prove your worth this season and if you’re fortunate to get there and avoid injury, then you have the right to make all the UGA noises you want, until you strap ‘em up…shut it up!
Because right now, ‘da Tigers are wearing the hardware…and raiding the state, so you might want to get your house in order.

All you people that love to throw up win your conference. We had the same amount of wins and losses in the conference. The fact is for 30 other years instead of the tie brearker they use now.Based on the year and what we earned poll wise we would have been crowned SEC champs you bunch of chumps! And they should go by the polls on ties and we would have busted LSU’s butt.like we did last time we played them. What was it 45-16 .

I don’t think LSU “stole” our spot. They won the SEC and proved to be one of the best teams in the country. They deserved to be there. However I do beleive if LSU had played UGA instead of UT in the SEC Championship then LSU would have gotten beat and UGA would have rolled on to win the National Title instead. After all both teams had the same record and never played each other. If we had been in the big ten then we would have been Co-Champs of the SEC and then UGA probaly would have played for Title over LSU as they were already ranked higher. Also the reason I believe UGA would have beaten LSU in the SEC champ is because LSU was too banged up going into that game and they played flat, but UT played even flater and Ainge rolled over and died for them (wish he would’ve had that kind of game against UGA) Not to mention UGA was playing better than anyone else in the country at the time. Every Tiger fan that I KNOW has admitted to me that they are glad they didn’t have to play UGA in the SEC title game because they think they would have lost.
But all of this is old news. It’s time for the 2008 season to get rolling and we will see how things work out this year. Congrats to LSU for last year now on the more SEC domination of CFB. It’s about time for a little luck to come the Bulldaws way.

Wow — and Bulldog fans think Urban Meier is the crybaby? You lose so much respect from others with your whining about last year. The right SEC team was in the National Championship game. UGA should focus on getting there this year.
Just a thought — maybe these players want to go to the school that won the title, not the school that cries about last year.
Good luck UGA — the media doesn’t even pick UGA to win the SEC, much less the BCS.

Jman has a point. We only had what 14 spots and a possible 15 or 16. We will have a whole lot in 09 though so that class should be something to whistle about.
Florida’s D will be their downfall. Tennessee is a joke has been for 5 years. Why you guys kept Fat Phil is beyond me. The Tennessee loss is what changed Richt’s thought process about his approach to motivating the team. I doubt very seriously you guys even have a shot in that game this year. There isn’t a game on our schedule that we can’t win handily this year. Then again there is only 3 easy wins on our schedule this year. GT, GSU, and that other crappy team right after. I wanna beat Tennessee this year but I really just want to pound the hell outta SC. Hated them before Spurrier. Loath them now.

You gotta be kidding me if u don’t want to be a BCS Champ if you have 2 losses. All it matters is history will show that we are the Nat’l Champs for 2007.
The NE Patriots had a much better record last season than the NY Giants but who is the NFL Champ?
How many overall number seeds win the NCAA basketball tourney?
It can be argued with the BCS or a playoff that perhaps the perceived best team doesn’t always win it all. That’s why they play the game.
I’m surprised some Dawg fans aren’t saying Fresno State isn’t really the NCAA Baseball Champ. Didn’t they beat you guys?

HURRICANE KATRINA….
I enjoy the comments by everyone and reading about each fan’s loyalty to his/her respective team. It’s all good fun, intensifying the rivalry and time prior to the two teams actually playing the actual game.
HOWEVER, whoever “Hurricane Katrina” is, I think your comments were in very poor taste, even for a forum such as this. Too many lives were either significantly or fatally affected by that storm for you to make light of the situation in a (let’s face it) trivial debate about schools from which most of us probably never graduated much less teams on which none of us played.
As a Louisiana native, I was very happy that the Bayou Bengals won it all last year. However, since I essentially have no vested interested in any school or team at this point in my life, it’s all about entertainment regardless who wins.
Was UGA the best team in the country at the end of last season? Probably so. Should they have played for the National Championship? The rules said “NO.”
In 2000, did the PEOPLE of the U.S. vote for Al Gore? Yes. Was he ever our president? Again, the rules said “NO.”
In an imperfect world, you have imperfect systems. You win some you should have lost, and vice versa.
However, like my man, Jumbo said, “Geaux Tigers 2003 and 2007 Nat’l Champions.”

LSU had many key injuries all season. When we lost to Ark. we had 5 starters out on defense and Dorsey was on one leg.
Everyone expects GA to beat LSU this year and it could happen….but if you think there is NO way LSU can win, then you are crazy. I hope that if LSU can’t win it all then GA does, but don’t count the Tigers out yet. They have a good thing going.

Eight top ten recruiting classes in a row and another one on the way. We can’t sign every good player in Georgia, NCAA rules prohibit us giving out 100 scholarships a year. As for Jones and Smith, the fact that they camped at LSU means absolutely nothing. The best players typically try and hit as many camps as possible. You can’t fault them for looking around. When it matters though, they will both be in red and black.

You add Auburn & Clemson regularly getting a couple very good players and UGA is feeling the pinch. Georgia better hope Tech’s new coach isn’t successful-if so-they going to get skunked in-state. Bama & Clemson will be getting free pub when they open the season with a splash in the Georgia Dome!!! Bring it baby!!! Hey LSU fans - the only reason you are getting so many GA players this year is that GA can all the committments they can muster this year. Most of those GA players LSU are getting were never recruited by GA in the first place. So, enjoy them this year as it will be the last year you will get GREAT players from GA ever again. All the GREATER players in the state will definitely play for the DAWGS - that is a given. Isn’t it kinda ironic that great LSU has to resort to getting their best players from GA’s left-over players. What is wrong with LA’s players? Not as good as the GA players. You don’t see GA going to LSU and grabbing their players. We don’t have to because players from GA far excell LA’s players and we don’t want them. It’s an honor for our state that other schools from around the nation come to GA to get their best players - GA’s left-over playeers. Last year there were 39 colleges that had GA players on their roster and most of those players were starters and kep back-ups. So, thanks for letting the world know that GA has some of the best high school players in the nation and a LARGE HOT-BED for teams like, LSU, AL, AU, FL, TN,SC, KY, FSU, MIAMI, VB, CL, ND, USC, OK, OH, ETC, ETC, ETC. - (all players that GA cound’t sign before they alread had their limit and the left-0ver players go the all these schools and become All- Americans, Heisman Trophy winners, great defensive and offensive players - all from the players that GA couldn’t take. That sure speaks a lot for all the schools in other parts of the country that they can’t get enough players from their own state that they all have come to GA to field a team..NOTE: Alabama has 5 full-time, off-season that ARE ASSIGNED TO THE STATE OF GA TO RECRUIT THE STATE FULL TIME TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY GET THEIR SHARE OF THE LEFT-OVERS..SHAME, SHAME, SHAME. lsu - enjoy those GA players this year - it will be your last.

One final note. FSU was a power house. Then the thugs came in. One acosted a pregnant female and Bowden took in-house discipline. The beginning of the end on the dynasty. Dropped like a rock. Richt learned his lesson well. Two guys and one pregnant female - such menly men respresenting a fine school. Good job Marky Mark. They would have been kicked off the team at other schools. Quit recruiting thugs.

AS MUCH AS ID LIKE TO SEE UGA IN THE BCS TITLE GAME, ITS NOT GONNA HAPPEN THIS YEAR, THEY HAVE WAAAY TO MANY TOUGH GAMES!!!! THEY PICKED THE WRONG YEAR TO HAVE THE TOUGHEST SCHEDULE IN THE COUNTRY….AND DONT BE SURPRISED IF GSU IS UP LATE IN THE GAME BEFORE UGA PULLS IT OUT

LSU plays in the weaker division of the SEC. So, it is MUCH easier for them to make it to the SEC Championship Game. It is a real accomplishment to win the East. As for the West, well, not so much.

Dawgfans, I am as loyal as any of you, but last year was not our year because we couldn’t put together a complete season. The Bulldog team that couldn’t score against Spurrier, the one that didn’t play up to potential against the Vols, and needed old lady luck to hold on against Vandy, was not he same Bulldog team that humbled Florida & Auburn and crushed Hawaii. It took us a while to find our groove last year, but when we did, we were unstoppable.
This year we won’t have that problem. We already know what we can do. We will have a better RB tandem, and better receivers that last year. How many balls did we drop in the first part of the season last year?
Gamecocks, you will be embarassed this year. Fat Phil, we got something special for you, and Urban and the boys will see that the tide has officially turned in this little rivalry.
Besides, it’s Munson’s last year and we will give him the opportunity to make his final historic calls on the biggest stage of all.
35 days is a long time to wait!

Georgia spends more time every preseason hyping the media than they do getting ready to play football. The media has caught on to this Georgia trick. That is why they are not ranked to win their side of the conference. That is why there are so few preseason Dawgs are picked on the SEC Coaches preseason team.
Dawgs strap on you helments! We will see you’ll in Baton Rouge in Oct.

It is amazing that Richt or Georgia fans can point a finger at Meyer or anyone else for whining. Beside being the National Champs of thuggish behavior, grabbing that distinction from Florida State, UGA, Adams, Sonny Perdue, and the GA Legislature lead the entire world in whining.

Coulda…woulda…shoulda…The fact is Georgia did not win the SEC in the current format that ALL of the league participates in. Maybe this year you will beat South Carolina and Tennessee and have your shot at the SEC West, but as far a last year is concerned there should be no argument. Case closed. Move on. LSU is the defending SEC and National champion. Well deserved too. Crying about being in Atlanta and New Orleans is not a valid argument.

Man, you know it’s getting close to kickoff - the rhetoric is heating up! Two points: 1- LSU fans need to shutup when it comes to last season - you were lucky as hell, lost to Kentucky, should’ve lost about 3 more and you HAVE lost your best players from last season. We have beat your asses the last 2 times we played you & it will happen again in a few months. Les Miles aint good enough to finish higher than 4 in the SEC west this season. 2- Having said that, I will always pull for our conference for the national championship regardless if the Dawgs are in it or not. Even though I now officially hate Urban Meyer, if he had not moaned in 2006 we would have had the biggest joke in NCAA history foisted upon us : MICH vs OSU for the national championship. Neither one desreved to be there ( note the whuppings they received in their bowl games)
This year it will be the best team from the SEC, UGA vs. the best non-SEC team of the decade, USC.
Go you hairy Dawgs!

Tiger Nation - one of your national titles was split with USC so not unanimous, but I wont hold that against you…the BCS has not allowed it to be that way. The Tigers should have been paired against the Trojans that year, just as Auburn should’ve been matched against them in 2004…in my opinion the SEC champ should’ve been one of the teams in the BCS title game for most of the last decade. I now look at the Miami-Ohio St. title game in 2002 as a joke; neither of them would’ve beat Georgia or USC that year. No sour grapes from this Dog fan for last year; fellow dawgs, please don’t whine anymore. We did not beat UT & play for the title - I just feel that when bowl season rolled around we could’ve played w/ anybody. Congrats to LSU - as I said in my previous post I pull for the SEC to win natl. champiobships - the rising tide lifts all the boats. Tiger Nation, you missed this stat:last two GA-LSU games - 45-16 & 34-14, Dogs. That’s a cumulative score of 79-30. We will see you in the fall, when Les Miles has to play without NIck Saban’s players…and a QB from Harvard. Hey, at least the SEC haters can’t pick on his IQ!
Go you hairy Dawgs!

This season is going to be awesome…I can’t wait. LSU was an awesome team last year. I thought they were the best team in the nation until they lost those last two games late. I do agree that Georgia was the best team going into the end of the season however we didn’t take care of business early in the season against SC which we should of won if yal remember the last drive Chandler dropped a pass in the end zone that would of won the game as well as someone else dropped a pass in the end zone I can’t remember who it was. Anyways all is said and done about last season. We have a Nasty team this year… Florida has a good team, I don’t know about UT this year they have a new QB, Kentucky isn’t going to be that good they don’t have Woodson, and Vandy is just Vandy…Lets win our side of the conference to make it to the SEC championship game and take care of the rest. Lets worry about what we do and everything will fall into place…..Go DAwgs!!!!!
Stafford Stay for your Senior Season!!!!!!

The Dawgs SUCK! Stop crying PUPS you guys don’t win the conference but want a pass into the BCS game. You guys played in the right game in New Orleans last year. Hawaii would’ve made Vandy look like the best team in the country. I forsee another year like ‘03 two games against the Dawgs and two smackdown victories for the TIGERS. No wonder your high school talents wants to come to the bayou instead of playing between the bushes!

Why did Georgia have to win the division to get in the NC Game? Oklahoma done it. Lost the Big 12 title game and still got to play for the NC.Luckiset team in America last season was the Tenn Vols.Remember the Tenn-Vandy game.Vandy was in control going in to the fourth qtr.and fell apart.Had Georgia and Tenn played in where in the last month of the season,Georgia runs them out of the stadium. We lost two crital games and it cost us. Carolina we got out coached and Tennessee we look like we were sleep walking.Never should have gotten beat that bad. Of course Tennessee’s never had a game like that.Yeah they have because I seen them play like that before.

Maybe UGA should just focus on winning the SECE division before they think about being legit enough to win the the SEC and the NC.
Try winning and earning something.

I thought you guys might be interested in this…Since 2003, LSU has won more total games, than anyone in the SEC…(58) the TIGERS have finished in the top 25 every season, and have won two SEC TITLES in that half decade span. Their 85% win, percent wise is one of the best in the NATION! maybe the best!!! That is the best of any team…At home the TIGERS have only three losses, in the past five years. Twice to SEC EAST schools. Still the LSU tare over the last five seasons is very impressive, LSU has more SEC and NATIONAL TITLES than anyone in the football nation.
USCw tried hard to steal one, take one away, but they failed because we told them to count their little glass balls, and then come and count ours. If any USCW fan tries to clam it, we just tell them, come count ours then go count yours, your total is one, ours is three. Yes I know you begged the AP which we do not recognize to give you theirs…but the ONLY official NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP these days is the BCS!!! Yes count the little christle balls, they do not lie…and we refuse to share part of ours, we will not cut it into, it has no mention of USC, just LSU, NATIONAL CHAMPS!!! Anyone who listens to their tears of woe, we say come to our house and count. Yes all the little glass balls are here safe and sound, come visit them at LSU, anytime…Yes they are quite safe in the LSU trophy case. USC has a hard time counting, so we tell you that you have ONE (1) and we have the rest…LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY, and all the state of LOUISIANA and all the SOUTH, the SEC loves you and all AMERICA, but you shall not have our trophy!!! we want it right where it is!!! WE love you all, but we worked hard for the top place in football this last five years, and we hope to stay there. IF we could count the SEC against THE PAC 10, wonder how that would come out over the last five years??? But I will not do that at this time, but I believe that we would still be way out in front going into the 2008 season since 2003, five years, we have 56 wins, 85% wins. HEY THAT IS PRETTY GOOD, IF ONLY RP WAS BACK, WELL WE GOT TO GO WITH WHAT WE HAVE…GOD BLESS YOU RP AND THE JACKSONVILLE STATE TEAM!!! MARANATHA!!! GOD BLESS ALL!!!

C’mon UGA fans you did not deserve to play in the National Championship.
You have to at least win division!
Great teams find a way to win Championships! It seems that UGA fans believe their schedule is too hard!
That is funny since the SEC is down this year!
Tennessee starts a new QB! Kentucky starts a new QB! South Carolina startes a new QB! LSU starts a new QB! Vandy is weak! Alabama is stil rebuilding! Arkansas is going to be terrible! Auburn lost a lot of good players Old Miss and Miss state are losers!
I am trying to see where the tough schedule!
Can you UGA fans please tell me what is so tough!
It sounds like you are making an early excuse just in case you lose to FLORIDA!
When FLorida won the NC game they lost one game! When LSU won the NC game they lost one game!
If UGA loses more then 2 games they do not deserve anything!
