UGA quarterbacks gather near Los Angeles for Elite 11 camp

Georgia’s quarterbacks of the present and future are working out together on the other side of the country.

Georgia starter Matthew Stafford is a camp counselor at the Elite 11, which is held near Los Angeles. Oconee County’s Zach Mettenberger and Aaron Murray of Tampa, Fla., who have both committed to Georgia, are two of the 12 high school quarterbacks from across the nation participating in the four-day camp that ends Thursday.

“There’s a lot of Bulldogs in the house,” said camp instructor Tee Martin over the telephone. Martin was quarterback for Tennessee’s 1998 national championship team.

Murray is Georgia’s most prominent 2009 commitment, choosing the Bulldogs over 53 other scholarship offers. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder plays in the shotgun formation at Plant High, but has been switched to a different offensive scheme at camp.

“If there are question marks about Aaron, it’s if he can make the transition to taking snaps under center, which is what he’ll have to do when he gets to Georgia,” Martin said. “He has been doing it 100-percent of the time here and … looks phenomenal.”

Will Murray’s height be a concern in college? “There’s only a couple of inches that separate Aaron and [Stafford]. He’s shorter, but I don’t think he’ll get his passes knocked down a lot because he has such a high release point. Also, he’s very fast and athletic, and will be able to [scramble] to throw in the passing lanes.”

The 6-5, 235-pound Mettenberger is a classic pocket passer and has won rave reviews with his arm strength. Said Martin: “He was standing flat-footed and throwing balls to me 50 yards away with a zip. You just don’t see many high school kids with that type of velocity.”

Stafford is one of several Elite 11 alumni serving as counselors, along with Missouri’s Chase Daniel and Colt McCoy of Texas, among others. Georgia begins preseason practice next week.

If anyone saw College Football Live” yesterday on ESPN, you heard Herbstreit say that Stafford was PHENOMENAL in his footwork, the physical shape and velocity.

He said Stafford is looking TERRIFIC, and is ready for a HUGE season and could be the #1 pick next year.

Thats a lot of hype, but its good to hear the dawgs mentioned like that.

Go dawgs.

Georgia QB situation looks really good. Only question is which one of these recruits ends up reshirting. Or, one might transfer if they lose out on the job say their junior year. Also, Herbstriet is out there and said Stafford looks like he is in the best shape of his career (lost like ten pounds). Go Dawgs!

Anybody know if the camp counselors are compensated and how that works within the NCAA rules? I’m sure they are within the rules or Stafford, McCoy, and Daniel wouldn’t be there. Just curious how it works.

UGA seems to have become a quarterback destination, just like FSU was when Coach Richt was there.

The thing I like about Herbstreit is he has always had his mind set right about Georgia and the SEC ever since we slapped him around in the bowl game we had against OSU. He knows first hand the might of the Dawgs.

As far as Stafford’s footwork, I hope he finally has it right, but under pressure he has historically not had it right. That is the type of thing another year of coaching can improve. It is one thing to look great at a QB camp and another to look great when a huge lineman is coming at you full bore.

I’d love to see the AJC post a daily journal with Stafford and get a feel for what he’s experiencing himself and observing with Murray and Mettenberger. Something along the lines of Chippers in Spring practice. Hey Matthew, thanks for the hard work we’ll all enjoy watching it pay off. Go Dawgs!!

Yes its looking like Stafford will be ready to go this year. He has the ability to be a great QB. It sounds like he’s got his body & footwork right now he just needs to be smart with the ball. A lot of these young QB’s grew up watching Brent Farve so now there trying to be like him, emulating his grit, determination & fun loving nature are all good things, but trying to be a gunslinger is not. If Stafford can get out of that gunslinging mindset it will hopefully help to eliminate some of the interceptions that are caused by him trying to squeeze a throw in.

Lee: The Falcons overacted to the Michael Vick debacle by drafting Matt Ryan so even if they have the #1 pick unless they can find someone who wants Ryan they won’t be able to draft Stafford if comes out this year or stays all 4! Ryan is a good QB but not a top 10 pick. Right now Stafford is still better than any QB on Falcons roster! They should be giving Shockley a shot at starting QB! With then money there over paying Ryan he’ll have to start ASAP then we’ll get to see him throw pick after pick. If he threw 19 in the weak ACC how many will he throw by trying to be a gunslinger in the NFL?

Go DAWGS! Go Cowboys!

GT45, get used to it. Top players in the country coming to Athens. To play for a winner, in a great conference, to be on TV almost every week, playing in a loud, packed house with 95000 fans and to go to a BCS bowl, live on a beautiful campus with 10,000 gorgeous college girls. Now, if they want to be an engineer, play in a half empty stadium, sleep next to I 75/85 and play a bowl game December 12 th in Boise in 10 degree weather, I’ll send them your way.

GT45 that is a good observation I just think that one of those two would go somewhere else before coming in then transferring…However with the way QB’s commiting early to secure there spot at a certain school you could be right Mettenberger could come in then see quickly he’s # 3 or on the depth chart & furthermore all the other QB’s are in a different mold then decide to move on…I’m sure recruiters will bring this up & try to get him to change his commitment before signing day…Can’t we get an early signing period & a playoff system already!

Tee Martin did what in the NFL & handed Payton’s Team at Tenn. FAT MATT just do it. I think #7 will still be a flop this year. Gator Guy, That would make Zach the ladle, not necessarily the big spoon. Good one! Mettenberger’s mom works at UGA and this is a big draw for him, as well. The fact that Aaron Murray appears to be a class kid and genuinely excited about coming to UGA, the chances of him decommitting, though not out of the question seem unlikely. All it takes is a slick recruiter, though. Think about our other backup, similar in athleticism to Murray in Logan Gray. They tried him at WR and it didn’t work. My guess is that Aaron may have a better arm than Gray and once Aaron is on campus, the likely transfer would be Gray, though he seems to be enjoying his stay at UGA. Who could blame him with all the “honeys” walking around campus and strutting their stuff on game day! Very few places I’d rather be on a Saturday afternoon in September, that’s for sure! I’d like to keep all of the QBs at or coming into UGA. Not only will they get a quality education, but they get the advantage of being mentored by a great man like Coach Richt.

I don’t think Herbstreit single handily cost the Dawgs a shot in the championship game. If we put one good drive together late against SC or showed up in Knoxville we wouldn’t have had to reply on the polls. OR if they had a playoff system we would have a good shot. Herbie did trumpet the “you need to be a conference champ” card though. I agree with Richt on that one, if that’s the case then make it a BCS rule! What I do believe Herbie did was help ensure Less Miles did not go to Michigan. Weather he did it maliciously or not is the question. I tend to think he was a pawn & was used by Ohio State alums to distract LSU & keep there rival from getting the “right” HC. Although given the time & if he can recruit good character kids Rodriguez might be there worst nightmare when his spread O is going full steam in a few years. Herbie already has a negative opinion of Athens & UGA fans let’s take the high road & show him we’re classy when we run into him this year.

Sabin at AL is NCAA probation waiting to happen…Again!

Wonder why Herbstreit didn’t stump for Hawaii to play for the NC last year? If you’re just going by wins/losses and the conference title and disregard inferior competition (like the Big 10) that should have been his position. Either OSU/UGA if going off prior rank or OSU/UH going off wins and losses.

It was an easy way for “Big 10 Corporate Gameday” to both get their own in the title game and make good on their preseason predictions (LSU).

Herbstreit is a scumbag.

So Island dawg wants to brag about 3 in a row over Bama teams depleted from probation. If you want to live in the past then let’s compare all time head to head Bama vs. UGA. Wanna do that? Didn’t think so! Wanna compare national and SEC titles? Didn’t think so! As for dreaming about the Bear let it go. The man has been dead 23 years and we won a national title in the 90s and were the 5th winningest program of the 90s. Look it up beyotch! Seems you like to say we are all about the Bear but he is simply one of 4 Bama coaches to win nat’l titles and his winning % was less than the great 90s under Stallings. The only reason we’ve been down in the 2000s is due to the 2nd worst probation ever handed down. And before you start saying Parole tide let me remind you that the Bama has had 2 major infractions cases brought against it by the NCAA. Georgia and Auburn have had 6 major cases with the NCAA. Look that up also beyotch! You’re just ticked because Saban is rebuilding Bama into the national name that it has always been and always will be. Same way he did at LSU(see 8 of 11 winning seasons before Saban got there). Also 17 of the 22 starters on last years LSU team were Saban recruits. Soak up that concept for awhile and you can think about the kind of juggernaut he can build with the big name BAMA offers and the best facilities in the conference according to many of the recruits. And if you think yours are better than at least go get an indoor practice field so that you don’t have to borrow the Falcons facility like a beggar on the street. Even freaking Ole Miss has an indoor facility for inclement weather. And lets not even get into that P_ss ant 9,000 seat (smallest in the SEC) high school basketball gym. Don’t even get me started on the Jim Harrick era at UGA. And to think you guys make fun of Ga. Tech’s facilities. Bama is going straight back to the top in very short order. Just deal with it beyotch! It is what it is. Get used to it!

Hate to say I agree with the comments on the gameday crew. These guys aren’t reporting on the game as much as they are selling the teams with the biggest fan base or the games featured on their channel. That translates into more viewers and ratings (and cash) for ESPN, the guys who pay that crew. It’s been getting worse and worse, especially the last 3 years. Not a big deal until you realize the sway they have with all that airtime.

Finishing second in your division and not even making it to your conference championship game cost you your chance to play in the BCS championship.

27 years……and many more decades to come I’m sure. Were any players at Georgia alive the last time you won a national championship?

Schools you play frequently that have won a championship since you:

Yo Bama Dog. We Bama fans don’t need to live in the past. That’s the whole freaking point. We had the # 1 recruiting class in the nation last year, we’ll end up with a top 5 or 6 class this year and we are completely dominating our home state in recruiting. Its all about the future over here Bama dawg. Speaking of living in the past you puppies need to get over last year. You’re talking about a team that had to go to overtime to beat a ho hum Mike Shula talent Bama team. And if Vandy doesn’t fumble the ball on your 5 or 10 yard line as they are about to put the game away then they would have beaten you 2 in a row. The only thing more embarrassing than losing to La-Monroe is losing to Vandy and Kentucky in the same year. You guys are still living in the past whining about your almost win. Shoulda, woulda, coulda! Quit your whining. You lost at home to a bowl-less S. Carolina team and got pounded by Tennessee 35-14, a team we destroyed 41-17 and Florida destroyed 59-20. You couldn’t even win your own division but yet you think you deserved to play in the title game. Like it or not OHIO ST. had 1 loss. LSU beat that same Tennessee team that pounded you with a backup qb. LSUs losses were of much better quality than yours. They lost 2 ot games on the road to bowl bound teams. They won 1 more game than you and as far as nonconference foes it aint even close. LSU smacked Va.Tech 42-7. Incidentally, Va Tech finished 4th or 5th in the country. Now quit living in the past and quit whining about a game you never should have been in to begin with you whining female dogs.

I believe Dale’s comments on this blog concerning Herbstreit are accurate. His alliances are to ESPN and to his school- Ohio St. Most ESPN reporters were giving their opinion that the BCS Championship game should be between Ohio St. and LSU. This affected poll voters. Obviously this was a mismatch and OSU did not belong. Maybe GA did slip with their two losses but fact of the matter is that Ohio State would be going to the Outback Bowl or Peach Bowl if they were in the SEC. PLEASE voters - don’t send this inferior bunch back to the BCS championship game again!!!

Bama has struggled pretty much since academic and other standards became more closely scrutinized. It’s more about who you get on the field than who you recruit. That said, I think Bama has an upside moving forward and will get back into the thick of things, but there is no reason to think that UGA has just as strong of a base for the future as anyone in the country. The Dawgs won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Should be top 10 preseason every year into the forseeable future.

How many games has that number one recruiting class won for the Tide? How many times have the beaten AU?

I think losing to two conference teams (Vandy and KY) two years ago is a lot less embarrassing than losing to UL Monore, but that’s just my perspective. Oh, and it must have been pretty embarrassing to lose to the Dawgs last year, since we lost to SC and TN.

Hey mdawg, you say that Saban committed violations at Mich. State and LSU? Really? Tell me specifically about the violations that you have uncovered. Be specific please. No BS generalities or “oh, that’s just my unprovable opinion”. Point out to me what specific rule he broke at either of those programs. Just curious to see if you know what you are talking about or if you are just a sheep who spouts stuff without any real proof. Incidentally, every SEC team reports numerous secondary violations every year. If you’re not finding and reporting secondary violations then you’re not doing your job. Secondary violations are just small, incidentally violations that in most cases are not willful and are committed unknowingly and everyone has them. If you knew what the hell you were talking about you would know this as a basic fact. BTW, Saban is at his last stop. If you don’t believe that than why did he just donate 1 million dollars in academic scholarships with the endowments to be paid out over 10 years. Doesn’t sound like something somebody would do if they were leaving anytime soon. Or is that concept too difficult for you to grasp? You just wish he was leaving. Still waiting on your report on his SPECIFIC violations at MICH ST. and LSU. What are they and can you prove them?

Hey Bama dawg, Its funny to watch you bust on me about Auburn beating us 6 in a row. This from a guy whose team has taken a beating from its biggest rival 16 out of 19 years. But then again, just like even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then you guys got your once in a blue moon win over an already injured Tim Tebow and Florida. I think the gators will remember the end zone dancing and all the unsportmanslike penalties the dawgs committed in that game. Just like stomping on the field after rallying to beat Vandy. What a classy guy Saint Richt is. BTW you will never in your life see Bama dancing on the logo of Vandy after a win over Vandy. That’s just the difference in mindset between the 2 teams. And while our No. 1 recruiting class won’t win many games by themselves its like I said. We’re living for the future. BTW it wasn’t embarrasing to lose in overtime to the dawgs last year. I think they were a good team. Not a great team but a very good team. I was just surprised that a team that beat our very average team by less points than LA-Monroe could have fancied itself as a national title contender. That’s all. If you barely eked out a win over an Alabama team that had very little talent on the field from the Mike Shula probation days than just imagine what its gonna be like when you have to play us after a few years of Nick Saban recruiting. It’ll be just like it was in the 90s with Bama and Florida in the title game year after year. Get used to it. Accept it. Its coming. Just deal with it and deal with the fact that Saban isn’t going anywhere.

Mdawg, Still waiting on your specifics where Saban committed certain, specific infractions while at both Mich. State and LSU. Please tell me that you are the kind of man that backs up his talk and his allegations. Anybody can just make up allegations. If you know of the specific infractions he committed then please tell all. And while you’re at it please tell the NCAA. Lets see you back up your slander. Still waiting. Snoooooze!

Well,

Question for all of ya’ll who say that Georgia did not belong in the NCG because we did not win our conference. The prior year, OSU and Michigan had that great game at the end of the season. OSU won the conference, yet everyone on ESPN included Herbstreit wanted a rematch. What is the difference other than one year?

Second question. If the UGA loss to Tennessee was so bad for UGA, then was the loss USC had to Stanford not so bad. Even at the end of the season ESPN and the rest were discussing the fact that USC had a better resume than UGA. To refresh everyone, USC lost at home to a 4 touchdown underdog.

In the end it does not matter, Georgia did not due what it needed to do to get there. And as CMR has said in the past, the best way to make to the NCG is to not lose a game. Doesn’t always work that way but it is the best start.

While I don’t care for Herbstreit (or that jabrone, talking head, Dawg-hater Mark May), he was right on the money regarding Stafford. Mel Kiper called it right saying Stafford will be a 1st pick into the NFL. He’s got boatloads of talent. If the OL, WR corps & Backs can do there job, UGA will dominate this year & Stafford will snag the Heisman!

Acworth dawg, The only people saying Mich-Ohio St. rematch were pretty much just ESPN and most northerners. Its just a built in bias. The north has a much greater population and ESPN being in Connecticut has a bias towards the Big10 and Michigan especially. As it was too many people remembered what happened when teams that didn’t win their conferences still got into the national title game and ultimately decided it was a bad idea. A lot of people remember when OKLA and Nebraska lost their last games and snuck into the title game only to get blasted by USC and Miami respectively. They just now have somewhat of an informal idea not to take a team that didn’t win their conference championship game. Too much baggage from those blowouts. As for Michigan there is so much bias in their favor its ridiculous. I remember several years ago there were 3 major 1 loss teams and Michigan with 2 losses and people on ESPN were touting Michigan to playing in the title game. Lasty year Mich. lost to APPALCH ST. and then got blown out at home by Oregon and they still snuck right back into the top 25 when they won their next 5 to go 5-2. Last year OHIO ST. had one loss so they were in and clearly LSU had a better resume than UGA so they were in. The rest is just clamoring by UGA and USC folks who felt left out with 2 losses.

Acworth dawg, I also forgot to mention that the ESPN folks will give USC the benefit of the doubt over an SEC team due to recent history. In the last couple years Arkansas got hammered twice by USC something like 70-7 in both games and in 2002 and 2003 USC put on Auburn 28-14 and 23-0 in Auburn in 2003 when Auburn came into the preseason as a national title contender favorite. They believe and probably rightly so that USC simply owns the SEC and lately who can argue with them?

Stafford will not make Heisman material, nor will the Dogs play for the BCS.

CMR will lose his job 3 years from now and end up back in Miami after bilking UGA for millions. CMR is the one laughing all the way to the bank.

It’s funny how the Alabama fans are being accused of living in the past. At least they have impressive accomplishments. Georgia fans want to believe they are among the best football programs of all time, but when a team goes twenty years without winning its conference any idea of national prominence rings hollow. Radio clips from your lone national championship from over a quarter century ago are played often, to this day. Children born during your one glorious year were in college before they even realized what “sugar falling from the sky” was. Over the past two decades, you lose 80 percent of your games against your rival, yet you persist in claiming an imagined status among the football greats. Storied teams such as Tennessee and Alabama do have greater accomplishments than your team, and more recent national championships to boot. Other SEC teams, such as LSU and Florida, also have recent accomplishments that eclipse your claims of dominance.

The only thing you can do to change these facts is to step up and do what dozens of other teams (along with five other SEC teams and the Yellow Jackets) have done: win it all. You can do it this year, and I won’t have to listen to all those ancient Munson clips any more. Win-win for everyone.

Until then, you’re still mired in the middle rung of the conference.

thie post from Lee above who suggested that maybe Stafford might end up w/the Falcons..my God man, dont curse the poor guy…1-not gonna happen, they just drafted Ryan. 2-Thank God. Stafford is way too good to be sentenced to a prison sentence in Flowery Branch. Hopefully he will be drafted by a team more used to winning than the Falsocns..that would narrow his possiblities down to 31 teams.
