Georgia offers rising junior

Defensive end Brandon Willis of Duncan, S.C., ranks Georgia third behind Florida State and Clemson after the Bulldogs made an early offer at the “Dawg Night” prospect camp last weekend.

“I like a lot of things about Georgia. If I come here, I feel like I’ll have a good chance of playing early because of the depth chart,” said Willis, who is a rising junior at Byrnes High, the defending Class AAAA champions.

Willis may have more serious interest in Georgia than he is showing. Last Friday was his third appearance at Georgia camps. He was all smiles after being offered by Georgia coach Mark Richt.

“I guess the third time was a charm,” Willis said with a laugh. “I wasn’t upset about not being offered the other two times. I just became determined to work harder and come better prepared this time, and it paid off.”

Willis is part of star-studded 2010 class at Byrnes, which is headlined by Marcus Lattimore, one of the nation’s top tailbacks. Georgia also has offered a scholarship to wide receiver Ricco Sanders, who will be a rising senior at the school.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Willis was difficult to block at camp, exhibiting an explosive first step and veteran-like technique.

Willis said he was surprised and satisfied by finally landing the offer.

“I finally did it, after all that hard work,” he said.

How much stock do you think recruits put into the order in which they are offered? I guess it actually comes down to who builds the best relationship with each kid. But I read alot where it seems kids put a school higher on their list based on when the school offered.

As coach Richat’s tenure has progressed at UGA I’ve said that we’re slowly becoming what FSU was. More & more signs are pointing to that being true. Since Richt’s arrival the recruiting has improved steadily till the point where we’re going to be reloading & not rebuilding. I hope they play Cox or Gary at least a couple series each game like they did with Shockley to get them ready to play. Before anyone else mentions it let me say that I don’t like the off the field stuff that happens every off season which sort of emulates FSU, that mess needs to stop.

2010 WOW recruiting has really gone a little crazy. Sign of the times I guess. Get with the new wave or fall behind. I wonder how CMR feels about these turns of events?

Paddy, you think recruiting is crazy in football, Doc River’s son, Austin, committed the other day to Florida in basketball. Austin just finished the 9th grade.

One problem I have with recruiting is 2010 is two years from now, this is not horse breeding, these kids have to produce. What if they stink their junior and senior seasons. Lets wait until they are at least done with summer practice before their senior season, if not during their senior season.

82 Dawg.. 9th grade recruit not only is offered but commits. Where are the dam parents in all this, hidding in the closet. I was 13 years old in the 9th grade. I could not find my bus pass at 13 let alone have any idea where I wanted to go to school. This is maddness.

MDAWG,

Although FSU has had some high-profile arrests, e.g. Peter Warrick’s excessively large discount, over the year, the volume has never measured up to schools such as Bama, UGA and UF.
