UGA courts Florida trio with ‘package deal;’ coach says they’re NFL material

Georgia is one of many colleges offering a “package deal” to three teammates from Sanford, Fla.

Defensive end Dyron Dye, wide receiver Andre Debose and all-around athlete Ray Ray Armstrong are being heavily recruited.

Seminole High School coach Michael Cullison said he recently was contacted by several Georgia coaches about the threesome.

“Georgia wants them to come to camp, or at least visit the campus, but I’m not sending them to any more [colleges] this summer,” Cullison said. “It’s nothing against Georgia or any other college; they just don’t need to take any more trips.”

Cullison said Georgia got a good look at the trio during the spring, when three assistants showed up on the same day to watch practice.

How good are they? “I don’t say this a lot, but all three of these kids could make it to the NFL,” Cullison said. “I’ve got two [former players] in the NFL right now, and these kids are just as good.”

Would all three consider signing with the same college as a package deal?

“There’s always a chance. They’ve played together since Pop Warner,” Cullison said. “But it’s all going to come down to playing time. They want to go to schools where they can get on the field the fastest.”

The headline for this should be “Florida Prep Coach Forbids Player Visits to UGA.” It shouldn’t be up to the coach to make the call on who these kids visit and when. If they truly are NFL talent, they don’t need their high school coach controling every aspect of their recruitment. A player who is that good does not need to obey every OFF-FIELD decision of his coach. Might be something worth looking into.

Since the “Coach” already has two former players in the NFL I think he will be a very good judge of how they are handeled.

After all there has to be someone protecting children (sadly to say) all the time in this society.

Yeah something wreaks of the coach forbidding his players from a taking visits. Doesnt sound like he has their best interest in mind, rather only his own. Makes you wonder if there isn’t an ulterior motive like the Memphis area coach and the Means kid with Bama. As in maybe some college coach is giving him incentive to not let these kids get away from in-state. “They just don’t need to take any more trips”..says who coach? You? Perhaps maybe ask their parents or families…better yet, ask the kids themselves. Ridiculous!!!

I agree..Coach shouldn’t have any say and whether or not these players visit Athens. Their parents should help and assist with those decisions. Skydawg, you might be right..a little “kickback” for keeping the players in FL or other schools. Michael Carvell: Any stats on these players??

All good points, but maybe the parents have asked the coach to take the lead on this recruiting business. If so, the coach has made his call and it is up to UGA coaches to try another route with this trio. Sounds like these guys would round out a great 2009 class. All we need now it to get a top ranked TE.

I guess this trio can ONLY go where the coach wants thems to go?

The possible no. 1 team in the country invites them up— and a high school coach says “nyet.”

What century are we in?

Oh this coach has ulterior motives out the arse. Would love to know what the kickbacks are in the form of. Agreements to certain colleges that his players will only attend their camps, talk to their reps, etc. This stinks like Albert Means.

I don’t understand the coach not letting the kids visit during the summer. I know there’s practice going on, but when school starts back there will be practice, games AND CLASSES. It seems less stressful on the kids if they visit during the summer.

They were not allowed to go to this week’s Friday Nights camp in Gainesville, either, so pipe down Dawg fans. It has nothing to do with your school…more to do with protecting the kids from it all, which more HS coaches should do. This coach seems to have his priorities in order. If they are interested in Georgia (and what HS football player wouldn’t be?), I am sure they will have plenty of time to meet Ga coaches, visit the school, and help make (with the intelligent help of their HS coach) an informed and intelligent choice on where to play football, and more importantly, where to get a good education. Georiga fills the bill on both of those deals…plus it has proven to be, like Florida, FSU, Miami, to be NFL factories as well. Stop trying to create a story where there is none.

TampaGator is actually right on. These kids have been attending camps and make unofficial visits but its time to wrap it up. There is talk of at least Ray Ray and Andre taking an official for maybe the Alabama game. We will be getting the last visit (his 2nd) from Arthur Fontaine, a 4 star tight end, in the next week or so and then hee will commit to either UGA or BC. So, there is probably the tight end we need as well as hopes of Aaron bringing Orson Carles. By the way, you know you can subscribe to rivals.com and follow all the recruiting you want!!!

The three are right now getting ready for pre-season practice and are getting ready for the HS football season. I guess the coach would want them around for that, don’t you think? Dye seems to have some academic questions to be resolved (so FSU might be the best fit for him). Dubose seems to be a FSU lean as well. The same for Armstrong. LSU is in the big picture, too. Georgia has offered all three, but I think they are not in the top 3 for any of the 3 players right now. USC is also in the picture for the three. Dubose likes Florida, but academics will be an issue for him there, I think. So, since all three of these players are being recruited heavily by all the big schools in the country, don’t you think the coach should step in a give some guidance. The school is a pipeline to FSU by the way.

Are these kids UGA-worthy? I’m not talking about the talent of the trio here, I’m just wondering if they have any arrest records, bad grades, or some other outstanding personal issues? If not they might not fit in on UGAg’s team. Just saying…

I’m a bit confused…Why is everyone complaining about this? All coaches do this to take care of their kids.

The real problem is when a coach steers a player to a program rather than letting them find out for themselves which is the best fit.

Get over yourselves.

For once, I agree with the UGA fans. The HS coach as no right to keep the guys from visiting UGA or any other school. If they are so inclined, they should go anyway, and if they are as good as he says, their playing time in their upcoming fall games woiuld not be put in jepordy.

Not 1 poster on here has a clue of what they are saying. Dye has been out to USC with his dad. They value the coach’s opinion, but are not forbidden to do as they please. They are just in agreement with his point of veiw on the season.

TampaGator, I don’t know where you got your info from, but Dye is not in academic trouble and he will not go to FSU. Miami is a player for all 3. Dye will not leave the state, so that leaves UF and UM.

UM could be attractive to Ray Ray and Dye for playing time and they are very close. DeBose will check depth charts and offensive schemes, although his dad liked FSU, UF is the best in state fit if he plays in florida.

Gator339…who made you KIND OF THE CLUELESS??? I did not say Dye was in academic trouble. I said he has some academic issues to be resolved, which he does. Dye’s GPA is 2.5, which is borderline for entry for a football player at Florida (even if he has passed the college entry assessments, which Dye has not passed). So, there are academic issues to be resolved, as I stated. He would be borderline entry into Florida or Georgia right now. USC, too. No problem for FSU and LSU, as they have lower academic standards for football players it seems…as has seemed to be the case at Miami in the past, although the Miami President and the new coach have that ship headed in the right direction now. My information came from reading Rival.com articles for the last few months on recruiting, including these three. I BELIEVE THEY HAVE A CLUE, TOO.

I understand both sides here. I think the coach really shouldn’t tell the player when to go take a visit. Is the coach going to college for the next four years? Is he going to take the mid-terms and final exams? No, the player will so what makes him the judge and jury for this young man’s future? You can only do so much, then it’s the player’s turn to do what he/she thinks is best for themself.

Lets see…The coach would rather the players take less trips in the summer vacation brake. MMMMM Where are the parents at because any parent worth a damn would say that they want their kids studying and learning during the school year. Not taking more recruiting trips.

I am a gator fan and the coach wants to send them to us. I think we get all 3. He won’t let them visit UGA because they are a uf rival and he doesn’t want them to leave the state. Right now it’s debose to uf and dye as well. Armstrong is broken between um and uf..

I really don’t think it matters if they visit us or not. We’ve got 3 to 4 more, in their positions, very interested in UGA. Like I’ve said before; I haven’t been worried about our recruiting in a very long time.

I’d tell coach Cullison to get his jollies playing manager/promoter w/somebody else if I were interested in taking a visit whether he liked it or not. It does sound somewhat similar to the messy Albert Means-Alabama-high school coach realtionship.

This coach will end up hurting these kids. I can understand the recruit or his family asking for advice, but for the coach to forbid the kid from taking a visit to the school is rediculous. If you have the kids best interest at heart, you would think he would want the kids to visit the schools and get as much info about the school so the kid can make an informed decision as to what is the best fit for him, NOT THE COACH. I’m willing to bet the coach already has a school in mind that the kids should attend. If the kids are NFL talent, I do not think it matters where they go to school, they will get plenty of playing time.

some of you are absolutely clueless. what basis is there to say that this is meyer’s doing? debose is confirmed to be in baton rouge this very moment and dye and armstrong are believed to be on their way, though some say that they may end up at FNL(very unlikely though). wherever those two end up, your BS theories are shot as debose is the jewel of this trio and he’s hanging out at LSU w/shep & co. for the weekend. amazing how many hateful, ignorant people there are around here.

One of the last times that it was public knowledge that the high school coach was controlling where the kids were going, was when the guy in Memphis was paid $100,000 to send Albert Means to Alabama. This guy is asking for money.

Some of you people know absolutley nothing. As a former high school recruit, I often went to my coach and asked him for advice. The fact is that these kids parents may not be able to afford these visits, which at this point in the recruiting season are still unofficial visits so all modes of travel and meals must be paid for by the family. The coach is probably the one taking them on the visits. Also these kids aren’t even seniors in high school. They still have another season to play. We had workouts everyday and then passing camps on the weekends. Who cares if they can’t come to UGA. If they want to come see the school they can choose it for one of there 5 official visits which the colleges pay for. Know your stuff before you blog like an idiot, but for those of you who continue I will say you give me a great alternative to watching tv
