Camden Co. WR picks South Carolina over Georgia, Florida

Camden County wide receiver DeAngelo Smith decided to commit to South Carolina, despite emerging interest from Georgia and Florida.

Smith, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior, also declined offers from East Carolina, Indiana, and Illinois, among others.

“He went to South Carolina camp a couple of weeks ago, and Coach (Steve) Spurrier’s son spent a lot of time with him individually,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron said. “[Smith] came back and said he was considering committing. I told him he really needed to take time to think it about because it’s such a big big decision.

“Then, we were standing on the football field the other day, and [Smith] said he thought about it and was ready to commit to South Carolina. It seems like a good fit for him.”

Herron said Smith might’ve been initially overlooked by many SEC and ACC schools because of Camden County’s run-oriented offense, with Smith catching 21 passes during his junior year.

Neither Florida nor Georgia had offered Smith, but both invited him to work out at each school’s respective camps on Friday, with a chance to earn a scholarship.

“We’re proud for DeAngelo, and think South Carolina got a player with huge upside potential to him,” Herron said. “He’s a 4.4 [in the 40-yard dash] kid who runs good routes and catches the ball very well.”

Many recruiting services did not have this kid rated highly because of Camden County’s offense. They run a Wing-T, and they don’t throw the ball a whole lot.

Well SC offered and UF and UGA didn’t pretty easy there, plus you can’t have every recruit so good luck to the kid!!!

UGA wasn’t serious about this kid—-they’ve got a bunch more studs ahead of him. He’ll be on a mediocre team year at south carolina and get 4 straight losses to the Dawgs!

Michael … that headline refers to teams that hadn’t even offered him. Be kinda hard for him to pick a team that hasn’t offered. Now that would be a worthy article: Camden Co. WR Picks UGA Without Offer

Good luck DeAngelo!

If this was the place you wanted to go - then a great decision for you to commmit.

My advice - hit the books hard - the next 4 or 5 years you will be in college will go by fast - you are fortunate to be able to get a college education paid for - take advantage of it!

Go Dawgs!

The kid is good but we are already set. I just hope he doesn’t come back and bite us like the Brinkley brothers. Remember they would have come to UGA but we didn’t want to offer a package deal. Steve took them both.

I wish him all the luck in the world .. and SC too when they aren’t playing the UGA. But I read the article because I was curious as to why he picked SC over the other two schools in the headline. When I realized they hadn’t even offered I saw the headline as a misrep of the content. Unfortunate pattern with the writer I have noticed. Gosh … I guess he picked SC over Texas, Ohio St., and LSU too.

Can’t figure out why you wish this kid “good luck”, do you want him to come back and beat the DAWGS?!

By JStrom

July 18, 2008 12:43 AM | Link to this

Ohio St., LSU, TX…none of them offered him a chance to camp and earn a scholarship. UGA and UF did and that’s why the writer says he chose USC over them. He’s going to have the opportunity to catch passes from Steven Garcia in SOS’ offense. Say what you want, but it really is a great situation for the kid. You can also “think” he’ll be on the losing end of the USC/UGA game his entire collegiate career (BubbaDee-Wayne…lol), but the truth is the two teams always play very, very close games. If you don’t remember last year, USC played poorly and the score was still 16-12. You never can tell, can you?

unw.little pup..i agree with you about the misleading headline and your better headline in the earlier post was hilarious and true, but dont be so quick to blame the writer. As info in newspaper work the writer rarely comes up with the headline..that is usually a copy editor who has read the story and whose job it is to create a catchy headline.

UGA did not offer him, so why even put uga in the article?

By Native Dawg

July 18, 2008 8:07 AM | Link to this

Deangelo didn’t pick SC over UF and UGA because neither UF nor UGA offered him a scholarship. He picked SC over schools like Illinois and East Carolina that actually offered him a scholarship.

I wish the kid all the best. However, the headline of the article, and some of its content, is misleading. Guess the writer is just trying to stimulate interest, but that’s bush league.

This is another non-story. Yes, UGA and Florida had invited this young man to camp. We have invited several kids to camp. No they did not offer him. UGA has a limited number of schollies to offer. This is a fact. There are three top rated receivers we are after. We are not going to give up those offers to someone else. The story should have been, “Georgia receiver choses COOTS over Illinois and East Carolina.” The COOTS have been tough on East Carolina this year. This is the third or fourth kid East Carolina has offered that chose the COOTS.

Panzi-boy aka SECCoachnDallas, Why are you so bitter? Is it because UGA got beat up by USC in Athens last year? We took out your super-stud Safety Johnson and Cory Boyd shook him out his shoes for a TD run. Or was it when Mike Davis ran over your 4-star CB? Get over it, ya’ll get the best players but are now going to use your schedule as an excuse to try to get the National Championship game. Mark Richt has no excuse of being loaded w/ top talent over the past few year and he hasn’t been able to take UGA to the big game. That, my friend, is the plain and simple truth.

OKAY I am a big Georgia fan.But guys you are wrong on this one.

The writers first sentence says “Picked SC despite EMERGING interest from Fla and Georgia.

Fair to say Georgia would probably offer the kid as well as Fla. He is 6’2” with 4.4 speed.

That can get you plenty of offers right there.

Deangelo…congrats, and best of luck.Except when you play Georgia….hope you drop every pass against the Dawgs.

Mark Richt loses star recruit: Sources within the Bulldawg Nation program have indicated that the young man approached coach Richt yesterday with the startling news. “Coach you know I want to play, but I can’t be in a huddle with your other players.” Richt, visibly shaken responded, “What do you mean boy? Haven’t we taken good care of you here at Georgia?” “Oh yes sir, it’s just that my probation officer says I’m not supposed to hang around with known felons.”

Enjoy it, though….it only happens once or twice a decade on the average. Shouldn’t you boys be more worried about that thug wannabe QB you have there instead of crowing about that fluke win you got over UGA last season?

DeAngelo, welcome aboard the Garnet and Black train. We are happy to have you.

If you happen to read these posts, I urge you to print them and keep them for the next few years. Pull them out the week before the uga game. Let these dumba$$ uga fans’ remarks add to your motivation.

95% of the posts above are perfect examples of why uga fans are the most disliked fans in all of college sports. You GEORGIA fans should be happy for this young man FROM GEORGIA! You people are such morons.

For the couple of you uga fans that posted with class and decency congratulating the young man, you must be the actual uga alums because it shows. The rest of you must be the typical redneck fans who have nothing else noteworthy in your sorry little lives except uga football. Because of this fact, when uga falls short of winning the NC this year I expect the state suicide rate to rise dramatically just before Christmas.

You Lamecock fans truely amaze me. I guess time really does make people forget. But as for me, I remember well you being the #6 team in the land then never winning another game. Then you got passed over for a bowl by a bunch of really crappy teams like GT and Alabama. Now Spurrier says he has a gem in this Beecher kid. Says he’s the next Shane Mathews. Ya, whatever Steve, Then why was holding the pencilboard so much last year? I see another 6-6 team in the making here.
