NBA son Glen Rice Jr. has Tech on short list

Walton’s Glen Rice Jr., son of the former NBA All-Star Glen Rice, was one of the most popular attractions among college basketball coaches at the Nike Peach Jam in Augusta.

Rice, who plays with the Georgia Stars in AAU basketball, is one of the state’s top uncommitted seniors. One published report had the 6-foot-4 shooting guard narrowing his list of schools to Georgia Tech, Miami and Florida State.

“I don’t know [about recruiting]; those three schools were just the most recent ones I talked to,” Rice said at the Peach Jam.

When pressed further about recruiting, the tight-lipped Rice said he wasn’t ready to name finalists, but admitted that he had been thinking a lot about two schools, Georgia Tech and Miami.

On Georgia Tech: “It’s close to home and has great academics. I like their style of play.”

On Miami: “It close to my father’s home in Miami.”

Rice said he likely will sign in November. Rice averaged 25.6 points and 6.4 rebounds as a junior at Walton.

It’s always so cool to see sons of sports stars doing well! I’ll definitely follow Glen Jr.’s career! It’ll be neat and I know his dad is, and, will continue to be, so happy with all that Glen Jr. is doing!

It is hard to believe Glen Jr. is already in high school. Glen Sr. was a pro as I was growing up.

Doesn’t matter where Glen Rice or anyone else goes to college. Ga Tech still has to overcome the on-court coaching of Hotel Paul Hewitt.

Techater, sometimes the truth is said in jest. Hewitt has yet to prove he can coach. Our program is always hyped but never produces. That is fact, not hype. Same could be said for our football and especially our baseball program though. I am one yellowbelly tired of hype. Give me production and then hype.

Yellowbelly,

Basketball over-hyped? I guess a run to the National Championship game doesn’t count as producing?

Baseball- Post-season appearances 23 of the last 25 years, but who’s counting right?

Football - one of five schools to go to a bowl game the last 11 straight years.

You’re right, we are so over hyped, fire all the coaches!

Wait unitl Shumpert shows what he can do with the ball in his hands and Mo Miller with a year under his belt. This years team will be much improved. They will finish in the upper half of the ACC this year. Tech people need to support CPH. He would coach circles around Bobby Cremins. His problem is he gets players that the NBA loves. Just the way it is.

Chad, there are several NBA starters from Duke.

And Cremins coached several NBA players while @ GT

Hewit is subpar to the rest of the ACC,,, and I’ve tried my best to beleive in him because I like his DEFENCE ,,, but facts are facts,,, Tech needs more Harprings, Mark Price, Berry boys, and yhe likes to compete in the ACC,,, Too many lazy selfish players w/ Hewit.

Are there any former Hewit/Techies starting anywhere in the NBA ? I can’t think of any……..

Even players like Will Bynum, Luke Schensher, Anthony Morrow are getting attention in the summer leagues and will end up making $$ abroad. “Chad ain’t too smart” needs to do his homework before making asinine comments

For the life of me I can’t understand why the NBA can’t have a draft system similar to Major League Baseball’s.

  • A player can be drafted directly from high school. This would take care of the few guys already good enough to play… Garnett, Bryant, Oden, Durant, etc.

  • If a guy attends college, he can’t be drafted until after his junior year.

  • Wannabe “one and dones” will ruin college basketball.

  • I guess there are idiots willing to pay NBA ticket prices to watch glorified high school players but I’m not one of them.

I thought about Bosh and Jack after my post,,, fyi i think Jack is awsome ! (very tough/ solid player). But Tech still doesn’t come anywhere near the likes of Duke. And GT being in the ACC will always have a handful of NBA talent through the years regardless of who’s coaching. I never liked Cremins because he only goes 6 maybe 7 deep(too weak) I like that Hewit atleast uses his bench and pushes the young men to play defence,,,, but GT still dwells amongst the bottom of the ACC. Get more hard working WHITE boys,,,, like a TYLER HANSBOROUGH or such instead of “offence only, lazy, selfish players who play WEAK.” At PG however I am excited about Mo Miller,,, Mo Miller is the truth!

By the way, check my post,,, I didn’t say ther are NOT any , I said I couldn’t think of any. Both the Yellow Jackets and the Hawks need to toughen up and get some BANGERS. Champs are won by the BANGERS (Physical inside players) not skinny little finness players !!

chad if u want me to name a duke player that is successful in the nba look no further than Carlos boozer. And while Javaris crittenton and Thaddeus young are solid players they ain’t know Carlos Boozer. i would defend paul hewwit if he had coached marbury and bosh and am pretty sure he did not. crittenton and young stayed two years in college not 1.

GT Baller-

Crit and Young were one and done’s, that is a fact. And Hewitt recruited and coached Bosh. Bosh came in Jack and Theodis Tarver (Hewitt’s first class).

Hewitt is a great recruiter and a great face for the program. But these one and done’s are killing us. We have three McDonalds All Americans on the roster this year and an experienced point guard finally. They will be much improved. Also, our schedule last year was one of the toughest in the nation because it was put together with the idea that we would wave Crit and Young and it backfired. Our pre-ACC schedule this year is much better.

By WFC

July 16, 2008 8:35 AM | Link to this

GT BALLER: spend a little time on research.

  • Hewitt did coach Bosh for his one year at GT.

  • Critt and Young each played only ONE year at GT, posting a decent-but-not-great 20-12 record in 2006-2007.

I THINK EVERYONE HAS VALID POINTS. BUT THE TRUTH IS THESE ONE AND DONE PLAYERS ARE REALLY KILLING US(GT)THE NBA SHOULD LOOK INTO NOT RECRUITING THESE SO CALLED HS NBA READY TYPE KIDS BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE. THE DUKES AND UNC’S ARE SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE THEIR PLAYERS STICK AROUND FOR AT LEAST 3YRS. BUT TECH IS KNOWN FOR HAVING GREAT PLAYERS COMING AND GOING MONEY TALKS EDUCATION WALKS WE NEED TO RECRUIT YOUNG MEN NOT THESE GLORIFIED KIDS COMING OUT FOR THE WRONG REASONS. LOOK HOW TECH DID WHEN PLAYERS WOULD STICK AROUND FOR MORE THAN A YR THEY RAN TO THE NCAA TITLE GAME BECAUSE THEY HAD YOUNG MEN ON THAT TEAM BEST TEAM EVER NEXT TO LETHAL WEAPON 3 KENNY A. D. SCOTT BRIAN OLIVER WHO WENT TO THE FINAL 4.

okay i did get my facts wrong i apologize for that but do u really think tech should stop recruiting one and done players. while tech has solid talent . the coaching could be better they were the 5th and 7th best players in their recruiting class on rivals.com. in that same class mike Conley is the 19th best player who is the starting pg for the Memphis grizzles. oh is that mike Conley i hear oh yes it is. and even with that team i am pretty sure they did not make the ncaa tournament. with arguably the best recruiting class that year.and one and done really is when a player has no choice and has to be a year remove from high school. critt and young and bosh all could have gone to college they chose not to. and can you name the other two all Americans on this team other than shumpert. while Hewitt isn’t a bad recruiter there are so many five star players that every team has one or two it is a matter of what u can do with the time they are on campus.

how many teams can boast these facts….

3 nba players on the team

finishes in the lower half of their conference

one an done in thier conf tourney

one an done in the ncaa to an inferior team

ph is all recruit an no coach guy. he is an empty silk suit.

this guy has NO love for gt like bobby c still does yet thier are folks who hang on his ever word.

ph will have another crappy year this year and and once again the ‘waite till next year’s’ and the excuses will abound.

Since 1982 Duke has put 25 players in the NBA. In that same time period Tech has put 27 players in the NBA. So, all I can say is chad ain’t so smart and n. carolina jacket, who looks stupid now. CPH is a victim of how things are now. Do you think Mark Price would stay four years now, I don’t think so. How about John Salley, Tom Hammonds, or any other stand out we have had. I don’t think so. Everyone thinks CPH is the problem, not at all. The problem is the money these kids are promised by “big agents” to come get while the getting is good. When a player gets to college most of the coaching the kid is going to get is already done. CPH does have his flaws, but name someone Tech could get that would do a better job?

By GT BALLER

July 16, 2008 4:56 PM | Link to this

trust me there is always an assistant in the pros and college who would gladly take this opportunity. i am still surprised that paul hewwit is able to recruit but that is a benefit of college basketball this days every team looks good recruiting wise. its the product on the court that matters and since 1982 how many conference championships does duke have and how many does GT have?

By hewitt

July 16, 2008 5:40 PM | Link to this

3nbaplayers-

I think you are being a little harsh on CPH. He does love GT and does a lot for the school. We have underacheived in the post season since the Final Four run, and Hewitt will be the first one to admit that. But historically, players under Hewitt have gotten much better in their careers, and I think that is good indicator of good coaching. Mario West went from a walk-on to the NBA, Jack definitely got better, Peacock has gotten better, the list goes on and on.

This year’s team will surprise. We have three to four legitimate big men (Peacock, Lawal, Dickey, Aminu) for the first time ever under Hewitt. Shumpert will push Miller, and if we can get Clinch to find his mojo, along with Bell and Storrs from the outside, it could be a good year. A huge class for 2009 will only add to the momentum.

By GT BALLER

July 16, 2008 6:05 PM | Link to this

yeah but nothing is guaranteed and don’t be surprised if shumpert has a good year which could happen cause he is tho only legitimate playmaker on the team that he could be one and done . a 6’9 center is not considered a big man. mo miller will improve and gani lawal will be more of an offensive force but outside of those three players this team is waiting for the chance to grab a top 5 prospect and use him for a year.

chad… for you to have concern over who gt could attract as a coach indicates your happy with mediocrity or your a dog or your hewitt’s son.

for instance… we were ready to hire the coach from Kansas when bobby flip flopped. you know… roy williams!

your statement is assinine when you consider our pluses… the acc, atlanta, top education, georgia and the legacy of bc. we would have coaches lined up for this job.

when you compare bc first 8 years vs ph’s first 7 there is NO comparison. bc built this program literally from scratch unlike ph.

ph has NOT been a step up from bc’s burn out years. if anything we have gotten a bit worse. ph was better as a big fish in a small pond.

in 19 years bc NEVER had a losing record at home. THANKS PAUL!

in 19 years bc finished 3 or higher 4 times and finished 5th or higher 12 times. ph meanwhile has not sniffed 3d place let alone 1st place and he still hasnt managed to finish higher that 6th in a watered down acc no less. the acc is not as strong now as it was years ago. THANKS Paul!

and tell me why other teams do well with one an doners but we cant? menphis did well this year with a freshman pg. syracuse won it all with carmello. yet we flounder with 3 nba players on our squad.

and to say that with ph the players improve is kind of an oxymoronic statement when you consider all coaches can say that for the most part. duh!

By chad

July 17, 2008 2:51 PM | Link to this

dis n dat, who are you rumple stiltskin, lets see memphis has a #1 draft pick, what was he ahhh a point guard. read the whole post. we need a point guard to stay more than one year. lets see carmello was a top 5 draft pick that could play the 1,2, or 3 spot. we went to final four because of jack and bynum. they are what guards. tech has not had the same backcourt play together since jack left. is that cph’s fault, yes to some degree. jarvis leaving caught him off guard. that kind of loss hurts a lot worse than any other position on the court. as far as roy williams goes, do you think he would have stayed at tech when carolina came calling. don’t be stupid. seriously show me something that reads roy would be tech’s next coach when bc left. really do you think if roy wanted to be at tech, the admin. would have not hired him. lastly college basketball is a different world now then when bc got hired at tech, there is no comparison to the era’s. why hasn’t college of charleston had a big turn around. i don’t see any mark prices or john salley’s on their roster yet. GO BACK TO SLEEP and stay in the 80’s

Going after Roy would have been a bad decision. That was a short terms fix at best. I do agree that saying noone else is out there is a defeatist attitude. However, Hewitt was a good decision to get a coach in here who will stay long enough to build a program. I will see how we play with stable depth at guard. Then I can say that CPH received a fair shake to prove himself and his coaching ability.
