Tech lands first in-state basketball recruit — Hancock Central’s Holsey
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Kammeon Holsey, who led Class A Hancock Central to its first state title last winter, became Georgia Tech’s second basketball commitment for the 2009 class.
The 6-foot-8 Holsey chose the Yellow Jackets over ACC rivals Clemson and Florida State Sunday while playing in the Nike Peach Jam Classic in Augusta for the Georgia Stars AAU team.
Holsey averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds last season as he was named first team all-state in Class A. He was also named the AJC Class A player of the year.
“I was thinking a lot about the ACC, and felt Georgia Tech was the right place for me,” Holsey said by phone from Augusta. “I think coach (Paul) Hewitt is a great coach. I developed a good relationship with him and his staff.”
Earlier this summer, Oak Hill forward Brian Oliver committed to sign with the Yellow Jackets during the early signing period in November. Tech still remains in the running for several other top in-state players including the nation’s top recruit, Derrick Favors of South Atlanta.

Thanks for the write-up. Hopefully we can get a stellar 2009 class to make up for this year’s lack of signees.

Now if we can land Favors, Johnson, and Udofia, (and there is a good chance we will), forget Lethal Weapon 3 will have the Southern Fab 5.

Alright….good choice Holsey! Now if we can just get Favors and a few others it will be the best recruting class since Crinnenton and Young.

Even if we land favors, johnson, and udofia, our class would not be as good as UNC’s 2006 class or maybe even their 2009 class.

This is great news for the program! When top players choose Tech, it says a lot about the coaching, the campus, and the opportunities on North Ave.

Bravesfan79 if you add Boynton(we’re in good shape with him) to that list it would be better then Crittenton Young class possibly Tech’s best ever.

Charles,
You’re right, even if we do land Favors, Udofia, and Johnson and/or Boynton, it won’t match UNC’s class, but then again, UNC might have the best class ever since the NBA 18+ year olds only rule. I would put that class (if we get it ) right behind UNC’s which is not too shabby. College basketball is different from college football in that one stellar class can instantly turn you into a national power. The 2009 class has a good chance of being stellar. If it doesn’t turn out that way, then it will be a shame, but having all these top recruits with high interest in GT is at least better than having no interest at all.
And to bball man, I would say Oliver and Holsey are better than average. Oliver comes from Oak Hill which breeds winners, and Holsey is a top 150 national player. They aren’t blue chippers, but they are very solid. Blue chippers usually don’t commit this early anyway, unless your UNC I guess.

Paddy,
I am a bball season ticket holder for 25 years. You are the idiot my friend! Look at our record lately! These guys just are not top flight players that will help us compete on a National Level! I know what I am talking about you jerk! I am a hugh Tech fan. Just calling it as i see it.

bball man, recruiting is not an exact science. Some players pan out some do not. Remember D. Barnes from N.Y. He was supposed to a leaping thunder dunker. Tech has not had the most crucial part of a good team since Jarret Jack. Mo Miller will make the black and gold proud this year and next. I would be willing to bet that no other school in the country has had as many defections in the last 8 years as tech has. Back up man and take a minute to just relax. CPH will right the ship.

Chad,
As a Tech fan I am soooooo tired of mediocrity it is not funny. We have to get better players to compete. Any wonder why UGA keeps kicking our butt in FB while the likes of Maryland, UNC, and Duke kick our fanny in BBALL? Called talent base. Plain and simple.

Chad hit the nail on the head… recruiting is NOT an exact science. 31 years of teaching and coaching in high school taught me that. Some guys peak as juniors in high school, others don’t mature until college. And, it doesn’t mmatter how good a guy is if he leaves for the NBA after one year.

Well,
For the first time since Jack, we are returning a point guard this year. After Jack we we’ve had three freshman point guards (Frederick, Critt, and Miller). Tell who else in the ACC has had to start three freshman point guards the last three years? Maybe that has something to do with “mediocrity”. Talent is not an issue, we’ve signed more McDonalds All-Americans than almost anyone under Hewitt, it’s that we haven’t had a leader on the floor since Jack left. Hopefully Miller can step up this year.

The reason we have been getting poor results in football is simple. Not talent, but p** poor coaching. Plain and simple. Remember a 4th and the game play against Ugay and what does Mr. ball do, he chucks the ball out of bounds. Who put him in that position. COACH did. You can’t win basketball games without a PG. I don’t care if you have 5 all americans on the court, if one of them is not a PG, you will be a loser more times than not.

Chad,
You mentioned 2004 - Throw the ball out of bounds, but you forgot 2005 - Interception on 1st and goal to end the game, and 2006 - Interception throwing to Calvin to end the game. Those three games still hurt, could’ve easily won all three. But anyways back to basketball.

Reality is dead on. Start (3) different point guards in consecutive years and see where you end up. Look at UNC,Kansas, Memphis, etc. They all have experienced pt guards. Tech will surprise a ton of folks this year if they get improved PG play.
Hewitt won’t need to coach once the PG becomes experienced enough. He can sit on cruise control and let them play. BUT, he must not overcoach the PG and let him find his own way. If the kid is talented, it will happen sooner rather than later.

SORRY ABOUT THE LATE RESPONSE,PEOPLE. BUT AS A SPARTA NATIVE, I’LL BE HAPPY TO TELL THE PEOPLE AT GT THAT THEY CAN BE ASSURED THAT THEY HAVE A BONA FIDE PLAYER IN MR. HOLSEY. IN REALITY EVERY COACH IN THE NATION NEEDS TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE BULLDOGS OF HANCOCK CENTRAL, AS THERE IS TREMENDOUS TALENT THERE NOW AND WILL BE FOR AWHILE. LOOK FOR THE BULLDOGS TO REPEAT AS STATE CHAMPIONS THIS YEAR TOO.
