Georgia lands 12th commitment of 2009
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Jordan Love of Glen Allen, Va., who said he was told by Georgia’s coaches that they might sign only one cornerback for next year, committed to the Bulldogs on Thursday.
“I called Coach Richt on his cell phone, he sounded like he was with his family,” Love said. “He didn’t recognize my number because I usually call from my mom’s phone. But when he realized it was me, he was glad I was calling. I told him I’m ready to commit, and he seemed excited.”
With 22 scholarship offers, Love is considered one of the nation’s top cornerbacks. He picked Georgia over Florida and Penn State, and called the other finalists to let them know he is going to sign with the Bulldogs.
Love is highly coveted because he offers a rare combination of size (6 foot, 185 lbs), speed (4.41) and athleticism at cornerback.
Georgia assistant Tony Ball observed Love during spring drills and extended an offer later the same night. Love fell in love with Georgia after visiting the campus last month: “It was a great experience. The coaching staff really made me feel like it was home. I have been thinking about committing ever since then.
“My mom told me to follow my heart. She told me whatever makes me happy, would make her happy. And I decided it made me happy to go ahead and commit to Georgia.”
How did Georgia land one of Virginia’s top players? Love said competing for SEC and national championships was appealing, and that he had relatives living nearby, with his father in Atlanta and brother in Spartanburg, S.C.
Georgia now has 12 commitments, including defensive back Shawn Williams of Early County. Love said Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez projects Williams to play safety, and that he is targeting other cornerbacks. “[Martinez] said that they knew they were going to take one for sure, which I wanted to be me, but he would also take some Georgia kids at cornerback if it worked out that way. If they had some more commitments at my position later on, it wouldn’t affect my decision. Georgia is where I want to be.”
Georgia has offers out to several of the Southeast’s top cornerbacks, including Branden Smith of Atlanta’s Washington High School.

Thats ok, PSU wouldnt know how to use him anyhow. Until we can bring in some fresh blood to help resurrect our program. Love JoePa to death, but he needs to bring in Greg Schiano. Until then Let a program that can compete for a title have him.

Michael, where did you go to journalism school? Your headline makes absolutely no sense. Georgia lands the 12th class, with the word, 12th, describing class??? Sorry, I am a LA teacher, and I hate to see the English language mistreated in the media (and by almost everyone these days). Oh, Georgia has the 12th commitment for it’s 2008 class. Now, that makes sense!

Mark, I’m a PSU fan, but a UGA alumnus and fervant Dawg follower first. Thanks for the compliments towards the program. It’s a good feeling knowing UGA has climbed back up from near mediocrity not so long ago. Now elite athletes from other areas know about and want to be part of the program; what a huge boon. Good luck to the Nittany Lions (unless they face the Dawgs).

SamoanDawg, John Martinez is staying out west. He won’t even be visiting UGA. The one thing about national recruits getting them on our campus can be very hard the further away they are. Love for instance didn’t know much about uga, but once he was on campus that was it for him. Mr. Martinez is a heck of an interior lineman, but UGA won’t be taking anymore olinemen right now due to the #s.

Mark - PSU is on solid footing - but just need to get over the hump - similar to UGA before Richt. Donnan was a big time coach that just missed putting it all together at UGA. Joe Pa - Big Time coach - his program is good - but just shy of hitting it big.
Best of luck to PSU this season.

Why did the article first say that UGA wasnt recruiting any more CB’s? Why didnt you make sure you were right before you posted the article rather than having to go back and change it? I refuse to click on any article by Terrence Moore, we all should, he gets evaluated by click counts, now I guess I have to add this guy to the list. Not very impressive journalism.

Ken, you’re dead-on with your post. All of this verbal abuse would be amusing if it didn’t get so old and repetitive so quickly. And I’m talking about both sides-for and against. This young man made a great choice for an athletic program and an institute of higher education. He would do well to concentrate on both during his enrollment. I’m certainly glad he chose my school and look forward to the contributions he can make on the field; I hope he can take advantage of the rewarding experience of an excellent college education. Congrats both to him and the University.

what will the past championships mean this year? will they help win games? UGA is poised for a title run this and thats all that matters. they might win, they might not.
I am a huge UGA, but this guy is not that good according to rivals. When you say top corners in the nation, i was thinking top 10. this guy is the 32nd ranked CB in the country. good for him, but nothing to report on the front page of the AJC. let me know when the studs say something.

Thats just in the last few years. Now…Tim Jennings 2 star nothing. David Pollack 3 star. David Greene 3 star. Jordan Love 3 star. I trust in our coaches abilities to recruit and evaluate talent. We beat out UF and PSU for this kid. He is lightning fast and 6-0 tall…what we need in a corner. Now, if you need anymore lessons in Recruiting 101, you let me know. I don’t know if Maxxis is a moron, but I agree with “Maxxis is a moron” (if that makes sense). I think you should have confidence in your coaches to sign the players they think are best for their program and/or have the potential to develop more under their tutelage. The rating services are interesting to watch, but in the end, the coaches should know best.

I believe this commitment is a direct result of what happened with the Alabama LB. UGA told him up front what they were looking for and he still waited. The Dawgs filled their need and told Nico thanks, but no thanks. They told Jordan Love they were looking for one high impact CB and he wisely took them at their word. Thus their brutal honesty had a beneficial effect as now recruits can believe where they stand in the program’s future. It hurts sometimes, but in the long run such integrity can only help the Dawgs.

Hey Maxxisdawg, have you ever stopped to think how many high school cb’s are in the class of ‘09? This kid is ranked 32nd in the NATION out of thousands of players! And that ranking comes from a ” Recruiting Expert” at Rivals.com (if they’re such experts, it seems to me they would be working for a school somewhere). I believe CMR and company have proved themselves worthy of praise in evaluating recruits and I’ll take their judgment of a kids talent over the so-called “Experts” any day. Besides, 32nd in the nation is still pretty impressive when you think about it!! Welcome Jordan!! And GO DAWGS!!!

Maxxis, by saying you are waiting on the studs, you are by implication saying that Love is not a stud. I have to agree with the earlier poster. Not only is that misinformed at best, moronic at worst, its unfair to Love. He gave you three examples of players that were rated with him or below him and they turned out to be fantastic players. This made front page news on the UGA tab of the Sports tab of the Main page. Hardly FRONT PAGE NEWS. As UGA fans, we want to know every kid that we have been fortunant enough to have commit to our university. With comments like that, I find it hard to believe that you “started for three years” at UGA. Started what? And for the record, I played baseball for UGA for 4 years under Coach Webber. I would NEVER by implication degrade another UGA athlete. Shame on you if you really did play any sport for UGA.

But, what is up with the love for Joe Paterno. The guy is washed up and as phony as my ex-wife’s engagement ring. C’mon guys, quit the love fest for JoePa, he couldn’t hold Richt’s golf bag, partly b/c he’s too old and partly b/c he’s a joke. Does the ajc high school sports department go on vacation the entire summer. It is very boring and redundant when stories on the high school home page changes once every two-three weeks over the summer. I know there is no high school sports going on but their is AAU tournaments, football camps, swim meets, travel baseball, not to metnion high school team workouts for both football and basketball and the list goes on and on. They are still high school players.
It is just disappointing that a major metro sports department cannot change their home page on a more consistent time frame. I travel a lot and the ajc high school sports does not measure up to other large metro cities and even a few smaller ones. When I can be on the road for two weeks and checking my home town page and it stays the same day in and day out, that says something about the paper, editor and reporters.
