Georgia makes token contact with LSU recruit

Tucker running back/cornerback Drayton Calhoun is having no second thoughts about his February commitment to LSU.

“I’m graduating early from high school and will be enrolling at LSU in January,” Calhoun confirmed earlier today.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Calhoun chose LSU over scholarship offers from programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee.

“They’ve all kind of backed off recruiting me, but schools like Georgia still write me now and then and say ‘good luck’ or ‘come and visit us,’” Calhoun said.

Calhoun, who was recruited by the Tigers as an athlete, will likely see the Dogs in action on Oct. 25 when LSU hosts Georgia.

“I’m going to try to go to the Georgia game at LSU,” said Calhoun, whose most recent visit to Baton Rouge was to attend the Tigers’ spring game in April.

Calhoun, who averaged 8.8 yards per carry last season, has no plans to visit any school other than LSU this fall.

“I talk to the coaches at LSU every week,” he said. “I really like the coaching staff there. Coach [Les] Miles is a caring, family guy.”

He must want to play CB more because we sure as hell don’t have room for any more RB’s. Anyway, hope it works out for him. Also, I know they’ve lost some players, but they’ve also reloaded as we have. How can you say the defending NC’s are going backwards?

LSU has had great success and earned every bit of it. I’d like to have seen The Dawgs play ‘em last year but we didn’t earn it. With that said, LSU lost big playmakers on both sides of the ball. You don’t replace those guys fast. LSU will be good this year but reloading and facing Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and yes, even Arkansas next season will be almost as big a challange as The Dawgs face in their schedule. I don’t see a repeat NC team next season for LSU.

I don’t see LSU going backwards. Maybe what bulldawg1979 was trying to imply was that LSU may have by comparison to previous years a few that aren’t quite as successful. That in its self may be a stretch too. As for you Alan Iverson i would very politely like to ask you to stop posting on this blog. Nothing good will come from the senseless false accusations your making and you will accomplish nothing acting like a third grader. I would like to ask everybody else on this blog to not respond to anything else this person or anybody of the such posts for all they want is to get a rise from us (true Georgia fans). Thank you.

Good luck young man, and to all you others who go elsewhere. Just as we would hope our young men from other parts of the country would get the same wishes. As far as coaches, this conference is full of good honest family men, and with the exception of Petrino, and Oscar Meyer, they have all proven that they are just that type of individual.
Richt and Miles both like to go for it, when it means a win. Gotta love that.

LSU is going backwards. They haven’t won a national title since Hershell Walker was in college nearly 30 years ago. Meanwhile UGA has won 2 national titles under pretend christian CMR in the past five years…..oh wait. Nevermind.

As evidenced by Draytons comments, Mark Richt is indeed a class act. Anybody who knows anything knows he is a great coach and great person. As to the comments that LSU is going backwards, that is just plain silly. A year ago people were saying, “You lost four first round picks how can you expect to be as good?” And all we did was go out and win our 2nd BSC National Championship in 5 years. This past years team lost one player to the first day of the NFL draft but as many as four are projected first rounders next year. This years team will be talented and deep and the recruiting class that Les and staff are pulling in for 2009 is possibly the best in school history. The future is very bright for our damn strong team. Now, that the “Michigan issue” is off the table and the Perriloux cancer has been removed and we are focused like a laser beam on getting a 3rd BCS Championship this decade. We aren’t going anywhere. Welcome to Crystal City Drayton!! Geaux Tigers!!

I may be on the stump, but I’ll always be an LSU fan. If LSU had lost the NC last year then Les Miles would be coaching at Michigan right now. In that sense I can understand how LSU might be going backward simply because Les is so tentative about whether he wants to stay or not. Big Blue is his Alma Mater….who could blame him?

If Michigan and LUS both have average years this year then Les is gone. CRR may be at LSU.

Georgia doesn’t need another CB/RB. Wish him luck going to LSU and let it go. The dogs are deep in talent and have no need for a lightweight.

Why all the rumor mongering about CMR? What has this guy done to p!ss so many of you PWT bloggers off? Leave the guy alone and let him coach. If he is doing something he shouldn’t then what goes around comes around.

Let him without SIN cast the forst stone.

Jeez, summer practice had better get here soon if this is what passes for news.

First, I wish the kid well. He’s made his choice, and LSU is certainly a great program. I don’t know how anyone here could say that the defending national champs are “on the decline,” since the last time we all saw them they were winning the national title. They lost some great players, to be certain, but this is a program in “re-load” mode. I doubt there will be much of a drop-off this season in Baton Rouge.

Guys, leave the racist and/or anti-redneck commentary to yourselves (I’m not a big Terrence Moore fan, either, but it’s because IMHO he’s a sensationalist who deliberately tries to incite riots every time he writes, as opposed to simply offering perspective). Racism is ugly and not funny at all. And, in a similar vein, making fun of a team’s fans by stereotyping them as being uneducated, toothless rubes is ridiculous. My grandparents were farmers in South Georgia and while they were not college graduates, they were among the most decent, honest and forthright people I’ve ever known. There are obnoxious, ignorant fans of every school, but most “rednecks” are salt-of-the-earth folks who simply root for the home state team. Nothing wrong with that.

And those of you who malign Mark Richt for being a “false Christian” are engaging in a very un-Christian act yourselves. To bear false witness against another violates one of the Ten Commandments. And I can guarantee you that the negative comments posted about Coach Richt here are uniformly false and unfounded. It’s easy to cast stones at another when one is safely anonymous on an AJC Blog. But it’s also cowardly. And StoneMountainMan, I’m calling you out. You’re a coward. What you’ve posted is absolute garbage.

I was swaddled in purple & gold & I will be buried in it. However, I have immense respect for CMR. His Christian demeanor & family values are the stuff of which lesser men are jealous. He is certainly in the class with Tony Dungy. I also once lived in south Ga. for a good while & married one of their daughters of the South. When UGA plays, I pull for them (except for when they play my Tigers).
It is good from my perspective to see both teams on the constant upswing. The NC will likely come from the SEC again this coming year.
Mutual respect is the product of mature minds. Hatred, on the other hand, whether about teams, race, or anything else indicates one has a weak mind - whether educated or not. “A word to the wise is sufficient.” Geaux Tigers! Go you hairy Dogs!

By CajunStro

July 7, 2008 9:28 AM | Link to this

Mark Richt and Les Miles are both outstanding coaches along with being excellent role models for their players, but they cannot force players to act responsibly (see Perrilloux). One player should never make or break a football team because a team sport requires that everyone contributes for the team to succeed.

Is this the year that Georgia finally runs the table or another year of what could have been? I hope the Georgia boosters do not get impatient with Richt if the Dogs fall short this year.

Have you ever tried getting 95 young men to concentrate and perform their best for 13 or 14 weeks in a row? Now, add school plus personal issues to the equation to realize how difficult it is to participate in a BCS or National Championship Game!

By LSU042

LSU lost Russell, Bowe, Davis and Landry all in the first round. Starting QB and both starting WR, yet LSU still won a NT. Not sure if winning 2 NT in 5 years qualifies as going backwards, but I guess for a Georgia fan that has not seen his team reach the top in forever, he might not really know what the term going backwards actually means. LSU is going to be fine. We might not repeat as champions, but thats alright. My Tigers will still be very good and even the Bulldogs fans will be nervous coming in to Death Valley. Everyone said we couldn’t beat them in 2003, yet we managed to do it twice. Should be a great year for both schools, but nothing is set in stone.

I like Mark Richt as well and think he is a great coach/person. But it does seem strange that in the last 10 years Georgia is the only team that has an average finish in the top 10 in recruiting that has not lifted the trophy yet. USC, Florida, LSU, tOSU, Texas, Florida St, Tenn, Miami and even OU have all won the NT. Whats Georgia waiting for? According to the numbers, Georgia has recruited better than all of them except USC and Florida.

WOW

Can anyone tell we are gonna have a big game this year when LSU plays Georgia? I can’t wait!

Drayton followed his heart and believes in coach Miles. I myself had my doubts about the guy when he first arrived, but I’d take a coach with hearts and guts over a cerebral coach (aka Spurrier) any day. He is a player’s coach and will put Drayton in a position to win in life and in football.

As far as Mark Richt is concerned, we all know he is a great coach who might be holding the crystal ball this year. But first ya gotta get thru Death Valley! Good luck to you.

Dear Ricky Lopez: What you should really ask is when is the last time LSU was handed a national championship? Uh, last year? All we have to measure LSU and UGA is head-to-head competition. And I do believe UGA kicked LSU pretty bad the last two times they played. Further it would have happened again last year. LSU is going to have hell to pay this year in Baton Rouge mind you! We ain’t soon gonna forget the injustice of last year!

I don’t see why some would make silly statements about Calhoun picking LSU and comments about CMR and Les Miles. Both are quality coaches who will continue to have great success in the SEC.

Calhoun was being looked at mostly at RB at UGA and that spot was sured up with some quality guys already. LSU sees him at the CB position and is going to get a shot to play on the offensive side of the ball as well. Not as a RB but as a slot WR and other ways to get him the ball in open space. Could also be looked at on special teams.

And like most knowlegable football fans from UGA and LSU have already stated LSU is not going backwards in the least. Our biggest question mark will be the QB spot but we will have a top 5 D again this year, the best OL we have had in awhile, deep in RB, and WR positions. Young QBs usually strive with all those pieces in place. The past 4 years people have said it is going to be hard to come back from the losses in the draft but LSU has quality depth with expierence each of those years and proved it on the field.

I’ve attended many Great Southern Wood Preserving Coach Richt Dinners. The man is a class act. Society now days with the likes of some of the people on here blogging crap about man they don’t know is a true sign of what’s wrong with this country. Feel free to sit back and judge anybody you want, blame the Goverment for your sorry way of life. You want to be judged, here we go tomorrow when your job less butts are sitting on welfare getting a check for being a loser Mark Richt is putting his tax money in the welfare pot just so you can go another day to judge him,man that’s a true human being. I’d say wake up and look in the mirror and ask yourself if you need the crack your smoking to talk crap about him. I think you loser will say yes to yourself, but hey that’s just me judging you. I don’t know if I want to get into this mess or not…I would like to say that I know more about MARK through BOBBY BOWDEN than any other way and MARK is a fine guy and he is going to have a great ball club this year, but guys, if you want to play as one guy put it HEAD TO HEAD, the requirement is that you must win the EAST SEC, before you are good enough to play the WEST SEC, TENNESSEE, my old school, beat you out, just that simple…so don’t cry about it, your team lost, LSU WON, and TENNESSEE had to play against the best QB in the country, I wish that we had him for this year, because if we did we would pick up the third NC, LSU has one weak spot, this year, and that is at QB, then next year we will have a wonderful FRESHMAN QB come in from HOUSTON CYPRESS a wizzard at the qQB position, and the #1 QB in the NATION again in RUSS SHEPERT!!! LSU does not have to rebuild, just PLUG IN!!! I like all the coaches in the SEC, and LES is a great family man, with a great staff, and the “WIZZARD” OC will be able to do a great job again this year. GARY is something else with an OFFENCE!!! HE REALLY CAN MAKE THEM MUCH BETTER THAN THEY ARE COMING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL…LSU has a lot to offer, no one in the country has better facilities to offer the kids, a great campus, and FANS that are out of this world, DEATH VALLEY and their 95,000 inside, and another 100,000 outside that watch their flat screens, knowing that they can’t get in before the game but like to tailgate…no other school has the fans that are as loyal and sometimes a little “CRAZY” AS THE BENGAL TIGERS…AND THOSE CHINESE BANDETS!!! MARANATHA!!!

Easy buck b, I remember just a few weeks ago reading that LSU was contacting Dexter Moody who committed to UGA long ago. They all do it. It’s not poaching, it’s recruiting.

The NCAA only recognizes UGA as having on one NC and thats the one from 1980. The school doesn’t even claim the ones that your talking about except the 1980 title. Thats not saying other organizations back in those years didn’t pick national champs of their own. So if you just want to claim all of those you go right ahead but nowhere is it listed that UGA won titles in those years. Best of luck I hope the SEC can three-peat as Champs but it will be tough with UGA’s schedule this year, but best of luck!

Listen….no matter what, the kid is going to the SEC (good) and he’s going to enroll in a major university (good). He’ll continually have people second guess him until he actually enrolls, but he has made a solid decision. He’ll get a major univ. education, good playing time (maybe not the first year), and LSU has shown the ability to take players to the NFL if that’s what he wants. UGA is a SOLID program. But just because he chose LSU, don’t downgrade the kid or tell him he made a mistake in decision making. If he decided to go to GT or OU, all you negative people would be saying the exact same thing. GOOD DECISION AND BEST OF LUCK, DON’T LET THESE SOILED INDIVIDUALS BRING YOU DOWN.

Look on the NCAA website for 1942 the national champs was Ohio State. So before you claim something you might want to make sure its for certain. If you just want to claim championships then LSU can claim 6 1935,1936,1958,1962,2003,2007 and if you want to bring baseball in to this equation 1991,1993,1996,1997,2000. Face it we’re just a better program in both. Get over your self.

UGA’s website does claim one in 1942 your right but I have looked on the SEC website and the NCAA website and neither have UGA listed as the 1942 national champions or any other year your talking about so please before you keep popping your mouth do a little research. Also by my count in football and baseball we have 11 National Championships to your 6. So again whos the better program.

UGA has a superior program history. Take a look tiger fans, if you are not too drunk already =)

UGA NATIONAL CHAMPS 1942 1980. (2) LSU 1958, 2003, 2007. (3)

Congrats, ohhh! 1 more nat’l title. We’re still a better program any day….allow me to educate you classless cajuns…ahem..

UGA, SEC TITLES, 1942, 1946, 1948, 1959, 1966, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 2002 & 2005. (12)

LSU, SEC TITLES, 1935, 1936, 1958, 1961, 1970, 1986, 1988, 2001, 2003, 2007. (10)

OHHH! It appears as though UGA has more!

UGA, HEISMAN TROPHY WINNERS, Frank Sinkwich 1942, Herschel Walker 1980. (2)

LSU, HEISMAN TROPHY WINNERS, BIlly Cannon 1959. (1)

OH! Let us see! Again it appears as though UGA is superior!

Finally, to further entrench my point…

UGA, ALL-TIME RECORD 713-381-54 (.64460)

LSU, ALL-TIME RECORD 692-378-47 (.64056)

Wow! Yet again UGA wins! Unequivocally (Don’t waste your time looking that word up LSU grads, wouldn’t want to hurt your minds!)

So, you lose! Just like you will this year when we face off! We’ll have 3 national titles and three heisman winners by season’s end.

AU REVIOR! (Also, GEAUX is not a word, the french think of you as dirty savage, hick Americans living in the swamps…hmmm..which you really are, lol.)

LSU, Lsu fans calling UGA fans dumb? Our average SAT scores are 300 points higher than LSU’s, lol. We’re a top 20 public school and in the top 60 nationwide. LSU is like a 5th tier…it’s really quite pathetic. Oh yeah, and dresing up in tacky, purple and gold halloween costumes,…realy classy. Just shows. Low tier, low class… Dumb@sses.
