Arkansas’ Petrino dislikes ‘Internet recruiting,’ having to ‘offer more guys’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
You won’t find Razorbacks head football coach Bobby Petrino jumping onto Alabama coach Nick Saban’s webcam-recruiting train. Unless he absolutely has to, that is.
The former Falcons coach, now preparing for his first fall campaign at Arkansas, thinks online recruiting isn’t good for the game. Currently, football players must wait until the regular signing period between February and April 1 of their senior year to sign a national letter of intent. Petrino particularly dislikes being forced to offer a greater number of players than in the past, thanks to the cornucopia of websites available for showcasing the nation’s top recruits.
“I don’t like it. It is a trend, and it is because they’re reading people on the Internet,” Petrino told The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette this June. “We’re having to offer more guys because of Internet recruiting. That’s basically it.”
SEC coaches voted in May 9-3 in favor of adopting an early signing period of college football. Petrino was among the three voting against the measure.
But don’t look for a slew of early signees hitting SEC football fields anytime soon. The vote was only a recommendation to SEC college presidents and athletic directors, who tabled the proposal.

No s**t I can’t believe he hated the Falcons. Can’t belive he wanted out. Can’t believe he hated when Ghetto boy kept hollering at him on the sidelines on national TV. What an idiot. I bet he regrets everyday ever leaving such a dog killing, respected, respectful organization like the wonderful birds. How could he?

Arkansas stupid for hiring him? Well, I guess there a a few more ignorant statements than that. He was the best available coach at that time, and is a lot better of an option than Nutt. He runs an offense that will keep Arkansas competitive in the SEC now that they have given two first round RBs to the NFL. Desperate? Maybe. Ignorant … not even.

To all the Petrino haters—you’re all po’d because he left the dawgs (aka foulcons) for the hawgs. I think that was a very intelligent decision given the foulcons penchant as habitual losers. he gave it a shot, smelled the stench and left. Get over it, he’s a nice guy and a good COLLEGE coach. He’ll beat the arse off the dogs if they play.

David, I dont know if you are an Arkansas fan here defending Petrino or not. Dont really care. However, you are 180 degrees off on your reaction….no one cares that he left the Falcons. If he wanted out in Atlanta then he should have left. Fact is Petrino is a very selfish scum bag. Started at Louisville when he met Auburn AD and there biggest financial booster in a private jet, still sitting on the runway, to discuss the Auburn job which was not even open at the time. Then repeatedly lied to Louisville officials and his players. Then after negotiating and accepting the Arkansas offer in principle, came back to the Falcons and stood in the locker room lecturing his players about the importance of loyalty and commitment…demanding the same from them….he stood there and did that KNOWING full well he had already decided to leave them in the middle of the season!!! IF you are indeed an Arkansas fan and/or supporter….prepare yourself. Rest assured that if times get hard or a better offer comes along, he will leave Arkansas like a thief in the middle of the night, with total disregard for the university, its supporters, or most importantly his players….which i am sure he is already preaching the importance of the qualities which he never has nor never will possess!! I am not a falcons fan. I am a die hard UGA fan and a lifetime SEC fan, including a fan of the University of Arkansas…..except of course when they play my DAWGS!!!!!!

You gotta be kidding me. Coach of the Atlanta Falcons ? Who in their right mind wouldnt be looking for a way out of that mess you call a pro team. As far as Nutt at Ole Miss is concerned I’d be willing to bet he has more 4-7 and 6-5 seasons than he did at Arkansas. His first two years at Ole Miss will be his best thanks to Coach O. Hide and watch with Petrino (if he stays and I will grant you that) Arkansas will improve every year. With Nutt Ole Miss will get better for two years than head south.

It sounds like he doesn’t like internet recruiting because it means he will have to work harder to land a commitment. Blank knew weeks before Petrino left and gave him his blessings…then Vick was sentenced; Blank immediately reversed on Petrino and told him if he left, Blank would make it miserable for him.
That is the way it happened…not the junk Blank and the NFL dipsies (aka ESPN) tried to portray it.

Hogfan and timhawg,
We ARE NOT bitter Falcon Fans. We are just smart SEC football fans. Any SEC fan in the state of Georgia will tell you that recruiting has a huge impact on a coach’s success and credibility. I am not talking about landing blue chip studs every year. What I mean is the coach has to make a connection with a recruit and build trust. Credibility and Trust are two things you will not find on Petrino’s coaching resume. It seems that Petrino is already making excuses for next year.

Petrino would have stayed until the end of the season IF Blank hadn’t have reversed field on him on the day that Vick was sentenced and told him he couldn’t go to Arkansas (after weeks of discussion with Bland and VP McKay in which both told Petrino he could go) and that they’d “make it ugly” if he did.
That being the case, Petrino knew (a) he could no longer trust either one of his bosses; and (b) he was going to be flamed no matter what he did, so he took the job.
On another matter (that I haven’t seen brought up here yet but will - it’s just a matter of time), please save your comments about Petrino not being man enough to tell his players face to face. Blank specifically forbade him to talk to them - and then used the fact that he didn’t to roast Petrino to the press.
Anyone who thinks that Petrino is the reason that the Falcons are in the cesspool they currently inhabit is either mentally challenged or totally into denial.
And, despite the ill-informed and predicatbly emotional responses from most Atlanta fans, we are thrilled to have him in Fayetteville. The rest of the SEC will change their tune in 3 or 4 years, when we have emerged as the new force to be reckoned with. Wait and see.

Hogfan -
You inadvertently summed up the problem with your statement, “He was the best available coach at that time…”
Not surprising that Hogfan(s) believe being bound to a multi-year contract means you are available. Please remember that when he goes elsewhere at the first opportunity despite his contract with Arky.
BTW Hogfan, according to your understanding of the word available, Belichick was actually the best “available” coach. Of course, Belichick, like most other good coaches are way too big for Arky. He does, however, seem to have the same integrity deficit that Petrino has.

Hogsanity, that is an interesting view of history. I am sure you were present at all of the communication between Blank and Petrino. From a perspective outside of the state of Ga, it appeared that Blank was doing everything possible to appease this guy and make sure that he stayed. Yes, there were personnel issues from what Mora left, but Petrino did not have the balls to stay and build what he said he could do in the summer. Plain and simple, from his coaches to the way he handled players he was out of his league. He should do better in Ark, but that is a double edged sword. As soon as he looks good to a different suitor, he will jump ship. It will take a couple of years to build his credibility agian, but it WILL happen.

Gatorzone you are correct. They couldn’t wait to get Nutt out of town until, of course, he beat LSU. All of a sudden the hawgs weren’t so outraged about his affair.
Bottom line for Arky though - they are the South Carolina of the west. They are middle of the pack - best case. Yeah, I know you made it to the SECCG a few times but that never worked out too well.

Most Razorbacks are thrilled with Coach Petrino and most objective and knowledgeable analysts believe Coach Petrino is one fine football coach. Many of us have high respect for Coach Nutt, but it was time for him to move on. Ten years is a long time to be an SEC head football coach at one school. Only Phat Phil has more tenure in the SEC than Coach Nutt. Yes, Ole Miss will likely be very good this year. Their talent level is much better than ours, for 2008. I hope all of us Hogs and Dawgs will grow to act like we have a little more class and objectivity. Many of these posts do not become either school. Perhaps, some of us have been watching too much BSPN! I will back any SEC team against anyone outside our conference. Sorry you lost your mascot, Dawgs, but I bet my friend Sonny Seiler has got a strong young pup already on the way to Athens. Hope you win a national championship this year, Bulldogs! I’ll be rooting for you. Good luck!

The real question is whether Bobby Petrino will actually stay in Arkansas long enough to have an opinion.
He screwed Atlanta. He screwed over Louisville, He stabbed Tuberville in the back.
He’s basically a pathetic awful human being who lacks character and is a control freak.
He’s also towards the bottom of coaching talent in the SEC.
Why on earth would anyone send thier kid to play for Petrino if they have options?
The internet? He should have problems recruiting face to face.

Gator,
In answer to your question … when you’ve just broken up with a girl and she’s in the process of pitching a fit, it isn’t the time to force your way back in her house and say goodbye to the kids, if she’s violently against it and screaming at you to get out. It sucks, but it’s kind of collateral damage at that point.
As for what I do and don’t know, I’ll wager that I know more about what REALLY went on than 95% of those who post here, because I’m actually interested in knowing the TRUTH, and not content just to let ESPN talking heads tell me their uniformed spin.
Here are a couple of articles you need to read on the subject. The first comes from a respected Alabama columnist, Kevin Scarbinsky:
http://www.arsnonline.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=5066
(Note that the copy above is from an Arkansas website, since the story has recently scrolled off of Al.com; but it is the same story and carries Scrabinsky’s byline)
And the second recounts a story told over the radio airwaves gy a sports agent with detailed information supplied through his network of sports agent buddies, who generally know the low-down on these types of situations (MUCH more than the general public does):

HogSanity, I am not a big fan of Arthur Blank’s regime, and I am certainly not a big fan of the way Bobby Petrino has conducted himself before, during, and after this episode, starting with trolling for the Auburn job. I admit at first that I wanted to ask you to document your statements, and you did. Thank you. If the information in your links is accurate (and admittedly there are other web sites and links that have contradicted these stories in the past) then it just makes the entire situation uglier and dirtier, but it does not exonerate Bobby Petrino. And it does not address the fact that he totally lost control of, and the respect of, the players themselves. The players had no knowledge of all these back-office events, they just knew he could not coach at the pro level. While I strongly encourage the AJC to do their homework and determine the accuracy of these stories (so we here in Atlanta will know what kind of folks are running our team), I remain confident that Bobby Petrino deserves most of the criticism he has received. This is not an isolated incident, but just the latest one. He may be a good college football coach, but he lacks the defining attribute of a great coach - character at crunch time.

You aren’t real familiar with the record of the greatest Louisville Cardinal head football coach in the history of the school by a country mile, are ya?
You must be talking about the Atlanta Falcons, the most consistently bad team in NFL history, and its idiot owner, Arthur Blank, whose greatest claim to fame as owner is the firing of Dan Reaves, the only Falcon head coach to get the Atlanta Falcons to the Super Bowl.

Swinesong, thanks for the thoughtful post. Blogs work well when people “play fair”. It’s possible that Atlanta became untenable for BP’s family, though I have not seen any credible reasons why (and it’s interesting to note that a couple of million other folks seem to think it’s a nice place to live), but what were his reasons to leave Louisville for Atlanta, or his reasons to try to leave Louisville for Auburn? And while - as I stated before - I am not a fan of the way Arthur Blank runs the franchise, he has rarely been accused of blatant and outright lying - at least not by someone I would consider a reliable source. Again, I do not dispute that there were serious issues that led to BP leaving - even the Falcons agree with that - but the manner and timing, combined with his previous history, make it difficult to believe that he acted with character and solely to protect his family. Personally, it appears to me and a lot of others that his job-hopping efforts backfired and got him into a situation that admittedly was ugly, he totally lost control, and quit. I would not blame him one bit - if he had just waited until the end of the season.
I think the Falcons are probably better off, and the Arkansas fans who only look at wins and losses are probably better off, but I wonder if Arkansas football - built by Frank Broyles who learned from Bobby Dodd - is better off. Maybe. I don’t think so.

Rags, thanks for your comments.
Yes, the truth may very well be somewhere in between us, and it will be fun to see how it all sorts out.
Arkansas’s talent level is way down this year from where it’s been the last two years, and we are widely regarded as having one of the tougher schedules in the country, this year.
I think the “Hogs” go 5-7. I’d be extremely pleased with 6-6.
Conversely, I think Ole Miss is going to be very talented, although unproven. I think Ole Miss does 8-4 or better with Houston Nutt this year, and is the surprise team in SEC West, if not the entire SEC.
Regardless, I believe Petrino, with two years of good recruiting, will prove to be a very good one.
Regards.

Rags,
Thanks for the civilized response.
I have no problem, and am not surprised, that 98% of the folks here despise Petrino; it’s what I expected and I understand it. Moreover, if you re-read my posts, I never claimed that Petrino should get off with a “free pass”.
My own opinion is that Petrino is one of those guys - kind of like Saban - that is so fixated on football (almost to the exclusion of all else) that he has been somewhat naive in his prior dealings, which has left him looking like a “bad guy”. Everyone knows what I’m talking about - the Auburn thing, for example. Sure, he wanted to get into the SEC as a head coach; what top caliber coach doesn’t? But he shouldn’t have allowed the Auburn guys to contact him the way he did - it was wrong. As far as the Falcons/NFL, it was the thing that he wanted - until he got there and then it was painfully obvious that he was NOT a good fit for that league. He now realizes that.
But the good news is that I - and others - believe that he now has a good feeling for what he is, and what he isn’t. And one thing he is, is an EXCELLENT college football head coach. He’s now got a job in the SEC, at a place that has everything he needs to win big time. That’s a huge challenge and enough to keep him satisfied for quite a while. Moreover, he now understands that his family craves this style of life and he wants to provide it for them.
So- yes - Petrino is certainly at fault here; just now exclusively, which is what most Atlanta fans and ESPN idiots would have you believe. He absolutely HAS made mistakes, and it’s natural that others expect him to act badly again. I just happen to believe that there are factors that point against it at this time.
I believe this line from the Scarbinsky story summarizes what I’d like to say to the Falcon fans here:
“Criticize Bobby Petrino,” Campbell said. “Fair game. But the Atlanta Falcons bear a lot of responsibility in this. The NFL isn’t a virgin league. Arthur Blank fired Dan Reeves, a Hall of Fame coach, with three games left in the (2003) season. These people in these shiny glass houses need to think before they throw stones.”

Petrino is telling the recruits he’s planning on being the head coach of the Hogs for 10 years or longer. I wonder if he ever wins the west and plays in the dome for the SEC championship how well he will be loved. How about if someday the hogs played the dogs in the dome how well that would go over? Go Hogs. Oh yeah the Falcons are picked to go 1 and 15. I think that’s BS. I say they win three.

David, I’ll see your 3-13 falcons record and raise you a 4-12 with the #2 pick in the 09’ draft.

Petrino’s a sleazeball. As soon as a better coaching job comes along with more money, he’ll be out of Arkansas immediately.

GEEEEEZZZ!!!!!! Why are you HAWG fans so defensive and sensitive…..MOST of the blogs here are NOT from Falcon fans. As stated in above blog…I am an avid DAWG and SEC fan…and MOST of the other sane bloggers on here like myself dont really give a rats a$$ about the Falcons. As a life long DAWG fan, and a hugh college football and SEC fan, I wish the HAWGS the best…and I DO pull for them and ALL SEC teams when playing out of conference. You guys just dont get it…..Petrino has no ethics, loyalty, or commitment to anyone or anything if he sees an opportunity to possibly get a more prestegious job. He has NONE of the qualities that any football coach worth his salt not only expects but DEMANDS from his players. Is he a good X and o coach? YES! Will Arkansas win games that they probably would not have without him? YES. Will Arkansas’s football program be better in the near future as a result of hiring Petrino? YES. FACT….at least outside the state of Arkansas….Petrino is a scum bag who will in the end screw Arkansas and stab people in the back, including his own players, as soon as he proves his merit AGAIN as a good college football coach, thus seeking or finding the opportunity for what he percieves as “better” job. Just know what you you are getting in Petrino. Enjoy the short term success and wins…Right now all is well…ya’ll are happy to have him, and he is happy to be there!!!! JUST KNOW THAT OUTSIDE OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS THERE IS NO COLLEGE FOOTBALL COACH IN THE SOUTHEAST THAT IS LESS RESPECTED OR MORE DIS-LIKED THAN BOBBY PETRINO!!!! On a personal note i can’t wait till the first time Arkansas plays Auburn!!!! That is gonna be a fun one to watch.

What the hell do Arthur Blank and Falcons fans know about ethics and loyalty I mean isn’t this the same guy who fired the only coach to ever get your beloved Falcons to a Super Bowl with 3 games left in the season. Atlanta is a cesspool and the Falcons are the worest franchise in the history of the NFL. What can you expect though from people who live im a state that was started as an experiment to rehad criminals.

This would be enough for me to leave Atlanta:

I think the Petrino family will enjoy Fayetteville, AR much better.

Face it, Atlanta is a crime ridded cess pool where thugs are celebrated and admired. Any good parent would want to get his kids out of that crap.

Hey HogSanity,
You may be right, I do not know what goes on between owners and coaches but to leave a note taped to the locker for you players to read instead of standing up in front of them like a man and telling them you are leaving! That is very tacky!
Hey - By DanReevesFan - I can tell you have never been to Fayettville!

Petrino won’t leave Arkansas on his own. He will be shown the door and booted out. Young players today are well aware of this guy. He will get fired because he won’t be able to recruit with the big boys in the SEC. Look for a string of.500 seasons from this no-class person. Then on to UTEP or New Mexico St never to be heard from again.

Arkansas is VERY lucky to have Bobby Petrino as thier coach! Regardless of what has been printed and spoken in the media - there is another side to Bobby. Those of us who know him personally realize how short sided and false many aritcle and comments are about Bobby. Bobby is a class act and has remained somewhat quiet to protect his family and to “move on”….It’s dangerous to believe everything you read and hear - there’s always another side to the story. I hope Bobby Petrino and the Razorbacks have an incredible season!

Reading the entire group of comments I was surprised at the anger and filthy language covered by asterisks of course of many SEC fans. As a forever member of SEC fandom it seems the coarseness of our society in the genteel south has gone way downhill since Bobby Dodd and Bob Neyland defined class as the league was formed in the early 1930’s. Is it asking too much for civility in opinion exchanges. Some handled it very well.
