Georgia high school football recruits rank low on 2009 Rivals 100

Washaun Ealey wears No. 3 for the Emanuel County Institute Bulldogs but according to the Rivals 100 listing of top national high school recruits in the Class of 2009, the UGA commit is No. 92.

In fact, no Peach State players pop up on the Rivals 100 Class of ‘09 list until Carver-Columbus LB Jarvis Jones checks in — at No. 39. Georgia’s six Rivals 100 in the 2009 listing rank as follows:

  1. Jarvis Jones, LB - Carver-Columbus
  2. Branden Smith, DB - Washington (Atl.)
  3. Darren Myles Jr., DB - Carver-Atlanta
  4. Chris Burnette, OL - Troup
  5. Donavan Tate, ATH - Cartersville
  6. Washaun Ealey, DB - ECI

The West is best, according to the Rivals 100 Class of 2009 national top 10 high school recruit rankings. California and Texas dominate the top five, with Arizona and Hawaii prospects beating out anyone from Georgia:

  1. Matt Barkley, QB - Mater Dei (CA)
  2. Jamarkus McFarland, DT - Lufkin (TX)
  3. Cierre Wood, RB - Santa Clara (CA)
  4. Russell Shepard, QB - Cypress Ridge (TX)
  5. Devon Kennard, DE - Desert Vista (AZ)
  6. Rueben Randle, WR - Bastrop (LA)
  7. Manti Te’o, LB - Punahou (HI)
  8. Jacobbi McDaniel, DT - Madison (FL)
  9. Bryce Brown, RB - Wichita East (KS)
  10. Jelani Jenkins, LB - Our Lady Of Good Counsel (MD)

Louisiana and Florida are the only Southeastern states with players in the Rivals 100 top 10, last updated June 9.

Rate the ratings: Should the Georgia Six have been ranked higher and if so, where would you have ranked them? Do you think Georgia football isn’t getting respect from national pundits? Why are Georgia prospects listed so far down on the ‘09 Rivals Top 100?

These rankings prove very little..

There will be the Sabans, Mack Browns, Rodriguez’s, Paterno’s, Bowden’s, Oscar Myers, Stoops, Carrol’s in Georgia trying to pull talent from the state.

For example, where’s Buford’s Dallas Lee on this list? His accomplishments were even with Omar Hunter from last season.. Hunter was 1 - 3 DL in the nation…

I hope national recruiters do overlook the state of Ga for years to come.. Will make things easier for CMR..

Seriously, it’s what a coach does with the talent once on campus that counts in the long run.. Compare a Ryan Perriloux to David Greene coming out of HS…. Get my drift??

The state of Alabama has players # 13, 30, 42, and 100 on the list. Even MS and AR have players on the list. GA, FL and LA are not the only Southeastern states represented. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!

Ealey is a RB not a DB. These rankings do not mean a lot. We won’t know how they really stack up for another 2-3 years.

BullDawgRick, according to you these rankings mean nothing if you are talking about UGA, but they are right on the money if you are talking about any other school. Lets get it straight, do they mean something or not?

By Just Rankings

June 30, 2008 11:46 AM | Link to this

Its just rankings, remember Knowshon was not a 5 star on rivals or scout and look how good he is.

on Scout.com UGA has 2 5 star players already and on Rivals they have none.

CMR knows how and who to recruit all these rankings really do is let you know stats and measurables of players from other states we may not get to see otherwise.

Its all about production!!

“Check it out” needs to take a deep breath. Attrition is a normal circumstance for all colleges. As many before me have said, these are kids which are recruited. Most stay, some go, some are pushed out the door. In the great majority of cases, it works out for the best of all.

CalmDawg—Deep breath taken Now point your comments to the UGA Fans that cannot let go of the Tech Guys that have made mistakes. Glad to see that there is at least one of you guys that seems to have a little compasion for kids that don’t seem to be able to get it right when opportunity knocks.

Well Big Whoop! I bet any team in the country would be gald to take Mr.Ealey and anyone of UGA’s verbals so far……. the * thing is for fun only….. who has been the MVP’s of the camps todate? where are they on the list. see what I mean..

When UGA prospects are rated in the top 100, everybody swoons about the ratings, but when Ga. doesn’t get the high rating….Rivals and others are B.S…..These ratings mean zip, there are several hundred players on NFL rosters who were 2 & 3 star prospects in high school…Get a life…

O-Zone - I am saying that it’s up to the coaching staff to coach UP the players they recruit…

“it’s what a coach does with the talent once on campus that counts in the long run.. Compare a Ryan Perriloux to David Greene coming out of HS…. Get my drift??”

Perriloux was the 1 - 2 rated PLAYER regardless of position when he came out of HS.. Greene was a 3 - star.. Who had a better college career - the 3 or 5 star??

Ratings smatings. It’s all just for fun. What usually matters more than a 40 yard dash time is how the kid fits into the coach’s system, how he does in school ( and not in jail), and the level of his desire to be accomplished. Brandon Miller was an off the charts recruit for my Dawgs several years ago yet never even got drafted and is just hoping to make the lowly Falcons as a special teams player. Question for anyone - a coach friend of mine told me that Ealey was 19 last year as a junior and his SAT score was very low. Does anyone know if this is accurate ( hope not ) and could this at all affect a subjective list like Rivals??? thanks for any info.

BullDawgRick, remember these comments when you critize CPJ’s recruiting class. A good coach can “coach up players” to be good players, BUT the MORALS factor, should be taught at home before the coach enters the picture. Note some of the comments from such as Yellow Peter eaters. Kinda gross, don”t you think?

By Cro25

Country Boy - Your coach friend was doing some wishful thinking probably because he will have to face Ealey who WILL be playing this year. Don’ t know about his SAT scores you would have to ask him. I hear Ealey was doing quite well academically when the school year ended.

O-Zone..

Please find ANYWHERE that I criticize ANY recruit for going ANYWHERE…

Yes, I am a UGA fan.. But for any kid to get a scholly I am usually the first to congratulate them on these blogs..

When JP was named HC at UGA Yech, I actually said that it was a great hire. (I am a Navy man & KNOW that if he can win there, he can win anywhere!) Reason I said he’s a great hire is that with the system he’ll bring into Yech, UGA & Yech will not be recruiting the same players due to the differing systems MR & PJ run…

But you (or anyone on here) has NEVER heard me berate a young man for his decision to the next level… Now as for ‘dawgging’ the skol?? I am guilty as charged…

BullDawgRick, I didn’t say you critized the young men for their choice of schools.I said do not critize the coach for the choice he makes in offering “rides” to young men. I am sure Mark or Paul both know which players fits their system best, ot at least better than you or I. I do think that both schools will now be recruiting more of the same players,i.e., db,lb,linemen, etc.

Matt Stafford was a 5 star QB but has been an extreme underachiever, so far. The rankings matter little today except to the jock-sniffers.

Rivals and Scout are a business ran by people who in almost every case, never played football or coached. They are like you and I, except they make a lot of money for their OPINIONS! I have been to the camps and Georgia players always look better than those guys but a lot of that is based on how many so called “evaluators/writers” they have that live in Georgia. If they only have one like Chad who leans more toward kids that UGA has offered and they don’t get out to the games, then you end up with talent being overlooked. A lot of the main guys from these sites live in Flordia and California so they get out to see the games more so those players are already on their board when they are rising juniors.

By TRUTH

June 30, 2008 2:47 PM | Link to this

Clubhouse is right on it. Take a kid like Jarvis Jones, not to say he’s not a good player but he was only ranked high because his team played in the finals and they finally got around to watching a Georgia playoff game and he was one of the few juniors that had the size to be recruited. So, they latched on and declared him the best LB in the state. Before that, Jarvis was listed as a receiver on Rivals because that is what he listed when he went to their camp as a sophmore. Most of the players they base on how well they ran the 40 or how high they jumped on the vertical and if you are lucky, they may have looked at your highlight tape. They don’t sit and watch games so it’s no way they can say whether Jarvis is better than Mike Gilliard, Mitchell-Thornton or Eric Fields let alone other guys in other states.

Techies- get off the blog and go get your guy Tarrant out of jail. I don’t want to hear anymore about UGA and arrests. Our players get busted for drinking (imagine that in college)….. BUT RAPE….CMON

It seems as if every time someone of either school makes a stupid attack based on something bad that happened to an athlete of the other school, the god of retribution steps in and puts a pox on both schools. I think we would all be better off just to cut out that level of crap.

Ealy is 19 but the GHSA says that is ok as long as he does not turn 20 before he graduates and he doesn’t. He just turned 19.

Athlon recently published their college preseason magazine. They listed the top 40 recruits of 2003 and what they had accomplished in their time in college. Nine were a success and were drafted in the top 3 rounds of the draft. Another 10 or so were good enough to eventually start for their teams but never were selected to any individual honors such as all SEC, etc. The other 20 or so were either kicked off their team (8), never made it into college due to injury or grades (6) or transferred to division II schools and had a lackluster career (they were a total bust).Did anyone list David Pollack or Thomas Davis in the top 100 in the country? No, they were both ranked as 3 star prospects which means they were considered good enough to recruit but were a long shot to be starters. Rating recruits is not a SCIENCE… it is a business that makes a few people a good living and is usually more wrong than right in their opinions; but they try.

This list and article are laughable at best.,,,, Greg Reid, Abry Jones, Eric Feilds, the Ware County two, just to name a few outside the Atl,,,, and J. Davis, Dallas Lee, Brandon Smith , the Miller Grove kid (Stephen Hill?), a couple from Stephens and MLK,,,,,and then look throughout Gwnt.County, and the state of Ga. is LOADED with talent ,, and will be well represented in 2009 when all is said and done in the Fall o/2008. Hey Texas, “Don’t mess wit da DIRTY DIRTY and ya kno’ ya herd me herd me !!!”

Rumor has it that UGA is about to get a commitment from a super star running back named Clarence Walker. He is 6’3”, 235 and runs a 4.19 40. There is a chance he will beat out Knowshon as a fresman. Actually, Clarence is one of Herschel’s personalities that didn’t play when Herschel did, so he still has 4 years eligibility remaining. He will surely lead the dogs to a national title.

The rivals list is for butt kissers not butt kickers, thats why Texas, California, and Florida lead the pack.
