Recruit visits S. Carolina, but coaches on vacation
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Heritage’s Justin Jones will commit to Kentucky tonight, one day following a disappointing recruiting visit to South Carolina.
“Justin went to South Carolina on Wednesday and everybody was gone,” Heritage coach Chad Frazier said this evening. “They had a [graduate assistant] showing him around campus.
“That’s what sealed it for him.”
But Jones, who left a voice mail message with Kentucky assistant coach Joker Phillips today at 7 p.m. requesting a return call so he can deliver his commitment to the Wildcats, downplayed his experience in Columbia on Wednesday.
“All the coaches were on vacation,” he said. “I’ll just try to go back in July to meet coach [Steve] Spurrier.”
The 6-foot-7, 240-pounds Jones, who has scholarship offers from Akron, Delaware, East Carolina, Kentucky, South Carolina and UAB, made the decision to commit to the Cats following a conversation with his mom.
“She and I were sitting down and talking and going over the pros and cons and we decided that [Kentucky] would be the best thing for me,” he said.
“I went to camp there last month and went to junior day, when I got to see them play Florida in basketball. That was pretty cool.”

Oooooooh… how did the dawgs let this one get away? Sorry dude but if all the coaches were on vacation and a grad assistant was showing you around, you ain’t that high of a prize… Be glad you got Kentucky and enjoy the practice squad!

Yeah but it should have at least been a coach of some sort there to greet him! He might not be that much of a prize, but South Carolina basketball ain’t either!

Well, I guess the sensational headlines aren’t reserved only for UGA after all. I don’t get the sense that this recruit was bitter about anything and we don’t know that South Carolina even planned for him to be there this weekend. This entry makes it sound like they just blew the kid off and I seriously doubt that was the case.

Responding to HIGHPOWEREDOFFENSE: We’re talking football, not basketball.
Responding to the article: Jones was told beforehand that it wasn’t a good time because the coaches were out of town this week. He does have an offer but it is not a committable one right now from USC. Meaning if he wanted to commit on the visit, USC would not have taken it. We’ll see if Kentucky does or not.

Don’t know much about the kid, but 6’7” 240 is a pretty good frame to start with.
Doesn’t sound like he has TOTALLY counted Carolina out since he says he’s going back in July to see Spurrier. If you are going to commit to UK, go ahead and do it. Going back in July tells me you are not really committing to UK.

Jeff Hood is your typical dill hole Atlanta Urinal Constipation reporter. So Jeff, did you ever confirm with coaches at SC if this kid called them beforehand? I doubt ANY college would blow off a recruit had the visit been scheduled and confirmed beforehand. Of course, being a second-rate reporter checking up on facts never matters to you.

Dawg fans,
WHy be so hateful? I hate Spurrier too, but don’t take it out on a damn kid. He wants to make a choice here and it’s not him that reported this story is it? Man, I hope we aren’t getting a case of the big head already. We haven’t won anything. Get off of the kids back. Being recruited at all in the SEC is a statement in and of itself. I hope the young man has great success and I wish him nothing but the best….except when he plays the Dawgs of course.

Go back and read the article a few days ago about the young man who held out too long and lost his offers to Ga and Fla… these kids think that they are revered superstars already and everybody should bow to them! I wish him the best of luck, but why schedule a visit when the coaching staff is on vacation? Kinda poor planning on his part dont ya think? You gotta remember the Dawgs are almost fully stocked for the 2009 signing. They are holding out a couple of scholarships for the very top recruits. The state of Georgia is producing so many blue chippers that many who want to go to UGA have to settle for lesser programs like Tech, Florida, Auburn or Tennessee. It hurts to see these guys go to the competition, but remember Coach Richt generally gets the cream of the crop, and the other schools get the leftovers.

I am a dawg fan, but don’t understand the hate for any kid that doesn’t get recruited by UGA. I have a child at the high school and this young man is a good kid that just wants a chance to play competitive football and see where it leads. This is an exciting day for Justin and his family, let them enjoy this special moment. I agree, the AJC take on the visit was poorly reported, but this is a quite period in the recruiting calendar and they are searching for any stories to share to the hardcore recruiting junkies.

This is a nothing article that illustrates little except poor reporting. The comments. however, are hilarious! The Spurrier haters will jump at any chance to bash him, and many others also use it as an opportunity to vent whatever agenda they have.
The kid wanted to visit (even though he didn’t have a committable offer), he called and was told it wasn’t a good time. He came anyway and the AJC reports it like the kid was being deliberately snubbed. Amazing!
Anyone care to bet that if the same set of circumstances had occurred in Athens, it would have been reported quite differently?

David Reaves is a great coordinator. I bet he could recruit the best beer and liquor distributors in America. Seriously, I am a Clemson grad. I live on Sullivan’s Island.
I don’t have the typical hatred for the Coots like most, but I will say that David Reaves “owns” the bars of Sullivan’s Island. He is in them every weekend, and he looks to be having a pretty good time most times I see him (the water is flowing for him)
You folks can say all you want about Napier, but one thing he isn’t is a Bar Fly. I should start taking pictures for you, I will bet I see Reaves this weekend, and I will bet I see him for all 3 days during July 4th. The guy needs to get it together.

It is good to see that the AJC can manufacture some news from time to time. If this kid was a piority to South Carolina, they would have had coaches there to meet with him.

Coach Spurrier has more sense than to blow someone off. This kid had to arrive unannounced.
What I want to know is this, how did the reporter come to know about this situation? Did the kid or his coach contact the news?
Someone wanted press coverage.

The angle of the article is not Justin, but SEC talk. Very simple, it sounds like a scheduling mistake. Big deal. If he wants to play for us, it will work out w/ a July visit. Me thinks its going to take a little more than 16 points to get it done against the Dawgs this year. Last year’s game was an embarassment to the game of football. BOTH teams should have gotten a loss for it because neither did anything to deserve a win. Georgia should have just rode the hell out of Moreno and Brown last year instead of trying to force things with Stafford. Georgia does that and it wins. Its a simple as that. It was a poorly called game by Bobo. Don’t expect that to happen again. Georgia knows who it is now. South Carolina? Not so much. They might play 3 quarterbacks in this year’s game. Good luck with that.

When I read that Spurrier is “on vacation” I think of the scene in the movie “Forrest Gump” where Forrest asks his momma where his daddy is and she tells him that his daddy is “on vacation”. Clemson keeps 3 coaches on campus every day in case a recruit drops by. I am not saying this is a big loss but it looks like SOS should be taking notes from Tommy Bowden year around instead of just November.
I am stunned that any head coach that really cares about the program would let all coaches leave at the same time.

Way to go, Gamecock, think Zeb likes your name. Moderators, we all know Zeb(Zeke) are one and the same, get his IP Address and Terminate them BOTH. Notice the fake sexual comments ALWAYS begin when he arrives. Check the times, and get RID of the Pest.

Southern Mann, I don’t stoop to such things. People who know me know when it’s the real me. I never bring up sex on here and try to keep the insults at a minimum and act like a grown up. So if you want to go after all these fake idiots, then feel free.

Hey Gatorzone! I can’t believe that you think these UGA fans are the most hated in ths SEC?! I went to law school in South Florida and I guarantee your school is the least liked football program in the Southeast!!!. We know we have some obnoxious fans but c’mon man…everybody else hates the Gators! The Gators are the least liked program in your own state!!!
By also, hello lead dog....

We made a last minute call to our recruiting coach and was advised that they were on vacation…WE decided to take a drive out because OUR schedule allowed us to do so. Our only interest for this day was to see the campus, which we did, and it was lovely. We were not “snubbed” by USC. My 16 year old son is excited about his committment to UK and when this many reporters bomb- bard him with a million questions, remember that he is just 16 and this has got to be very overwhelming for him. Lighten up!

Justin is a great kid with a lot of potential. There are a lot of folks with to much time that think they know what is going on with Div 1 football recruiting. Hope Justin and his family can enjoy this special time and stay clear of the many jerks on the boards that don’t have a clue of being a recruit that SEC football programs are pursueing. Enjoy the ride, and go for a great paid education and play some serious football. Wish all the Georgia kids could play at UGA, but its a numbers game these days.

Why a reputable newspaper includes this component on recruiting news is beyond me. Let these creeps sitting in their underwear at the keyboard go to their own school’s message board to make fools out of themselves. Recruits nor their parents or friends need to be subjected to these kindergarden morons most of whom have never been on a college campus other than gamedays when their buffonery continues. For the record, the recruit had been informed none of the coaches would be there and advised to come at another time. Coach Spurrier was appearing gratis at a fund raiser to benefit his high school alma mater Science Hill HS in East Tn. While there he also visited with some of his old hs coaches and his favorite elementary teacher who is in a nursing home. I suspect Spurrier had been scheduled for quite some time. I hope Justin does well at Ky.

Apparently, Jones attended the USC-UGA game, and is thinking of de-committing to UK and re-kindling his recruitment by the Gamecocks. Personally, after the little amateur hour “episode” he and his HS coach put on over his ill-timed unofficial visit, I can’t say that I’d be too happy to have him join our team. But, I’m not a USC coach, and have no say in the matter…….
