Citing dislike for the big city, Tech loses commitment

It was four steps forward and one step backward for Georgia Tech’s Class of 2009 recruiting class this week.

After adding four new commitments over the weekend, the Jackets have learned that John Drew of Northside-Columbus no longer plans to play college football at Tech.

Northside coach Paul Cates confirmed Drew’s decision to de-commit then refused further comment.

Messages left at Drew’s residence in Columbus were not returned.

The 6-foot-1, 300-pound lineman may now be leaning toward Duke.

“I just had a change of heart,” Drew told DevilsIllustrated. “I thought I made my choice a little too early and I didn’t give everybody a fair chance.

“Plus, I really didn’t like the location of Atlanta. It’s real big and a lot of stuff can happen there. I just don’t want to be in a place that’s huge. Academics will be a big part of my decision.”

In addition to the Blue Devils, Drew also has scholarship offers from Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

He is scheduled to attend camp at Duke this weekend.

This is hilarious, seriously the kid sounds like a pansy. Scared of being in a city and such? What did you think when you committed? GT didn’t just suddenly appear in ATL. You also mention in an article I read that you tried to make it work but couldnt, and how was that? He is living in Columbus and never on campus or in ATL so how does he say he tried to make it work, its not like hes already enrolled. This kid has some issues if hes now looking at going to Duke instead, I guess a half empty Wallace Wade Stadium is a more comfortable setting for the kid who doesn’t like big places. Guarantee you the kid is overrated anyways if hes now looking at Duke.

I don’t blame the kid. I used to live at Tech and had my truck stolen twice in less than six months. You ever take a step off campus and there is no telling what can happen to you with the bad surrounding area, and this is coming from someone from Atlanta and feels kind of comfortable. Plus, who wants to deal with the bullcrap traffic? As soon as school is over, I’m getting away from the traffic and crime.

These kids put pressure on themselves to make decisions before they are ready. They see other kids committing and feel that maybe they need to hurry up.

I say take your time, be sure of the decision, pull the trigger!

If he did not feel Tech was a good fit for him - decommit now - find the right fit - and go enjoy your career!

I would rather he decommit now - than on signing day like that TE did to Georgia. That kid screwed GA over - not only did UGAy not pick up a tight end - but Buford’s Omar Hunter - was begging for a scholarship to attend UGA - and committed to Florida - faxing his paperwork in - and then to find out that the TE a few hours later.

Certainly there’s lots of crime in the ATL, but not so much on campus at GTech. There are sections of Columbus you want to stay away from too, just as in any town. Athens is different tho! In Athens, all the thugs are on the football team. Its safer downtown.

He should go to UGA where he can get arrested for DUI, disorderly conduct and/or possession, then play a season for the Athens Correctional inmates team, also known as a UGA “redshirt”. By the way, the crime levels at GT dropped significantly when the Techwood Homes were wiped clean for the 96 Olympics. Aside from Reuben Houston and Joe Hamilton, crime is practically non-existent…

Don’t worry, they hit softer at Duke practices.

Oh yeah, and in all seriousness, pick Vandy!

Wow!! Lots of “I could care less about Tech” GA fans posting about a kid who has chosen small-town life & acedemics over Tech & atheletics.
Nice to see the ‘concern’ from the GA faithful. It appears their fear is growing. In the beginning when PJ was hired you’d only see a few GA posts. Now there are quite a few. Appears to me they have taken the time to ‘google’ Paul Johnson, and have have read what Tech is soon going to do to their beloved Dogs.

Gonna be fun as a Tech fan, and the fun begins 11/29/08!

Hope all works out for Drew that said, hopefully Johnson and Co. will learn from this. First kids who want to be at Tech and it’s education are the ones. If we totally recruit Georgia we will hit smaller towns and sometimes the Big City is just too much. However, we should be able to recruit Ga. Well and Nationally well. There are plenty of people that want to play for Johnson and Tech and it probably will get even better once people see the product on the field. Just think we have 9 commits and a well of others who are interested. That is good recruiting.

I, and I am sure CPJ and the staff, are extremely grateful that this young gentleman had the courtesy to notify the school in June 08 that he will not be attending GT in August of 09. We now have much time to fill this gap if we so choose. Mr. Drew, if you are reading this boards, which I hope your are not given the childish comments that appear, good luck to you.

Any young man that is to scared to come to school at GT because of it’s location needs to turn loose of his mothers teet and grow up. What’s next? This story and the anti-ATL posts are so ignorant they’re funny. I went to GT and live in Durham. (UGA fans - that’s the city in NC where you find Duke.) So you want to get away from what? Slums, crime, oh - I saw that ATL is mismanaged in one of these posts. Um, Durham might not be the place you want to pick. If the story is true, he is apparently picking one school/city he doesn’t know well for another. I understand he’s an 18 year old kid and making his mistakes in public - the rest of us get to make ours more quietly. But I promise you this: he won’t be happy with his change of heart either. Not only is the crime/ghetto aspect as bad, but they actually have port-a-johns INSIDE the stadium at Wallace Wade. Not really sure how he’s trading up. No hard feelings - sounds like GT was not the place for him. But there are better alternatives than Duke…

And to all you dawg fans, if Atlanta is so terrible and Athens is so great, why don’t you stop moving down here after graduation! Atlanta would be much better off without you mutts.

And to say Tech doesn’t have women is a very old stereotype that needs to die. It’s like saying UGA only has inbred rednecks, it’s just not true anymore. And if you can’t find a Tech girl, try your luck in midtown, virginia highlands, buckhead, decatur, georgia state, agnes scott, kennesaw state, or emory. GT plays in the ACC which is mediocre at best and still does not challenege. I guess I should add 0-7 the past 7 years against UGA too. But really UGA sucks. Please refrain from saying anything about UGA sucking because there is no comparison between GT and UGA. If GT played in the SEC they would be the team at the bottom year in and year out. Their talent level is nowhere near what is on any SEC team. Stick to basketball and baseball GT people. Oh I just remembered. The University of Georgia certainly shouldn’t be arrogant.

But they have actually won more than national championship in football coming through with five. Unfortunately, it seems like the way that champions were selected earlier on in the 1900’s could raise some questions on legitimacy. But the same goes for Georgia Tech since two of their championship years date 1917 and 1928. UGA has at least two, one in 1942 and 1980.

UGA has also been much more consistent in the Mark Richt era. Georgia Tech has not won it’s conference since ‘98. Tech also has not won a BCS bowl and the ACC as a whole is 1-9 in the BCS. (There’s also the pesky 7 wins in a row UGA has against Georgia Tech.)

There are a lot more UGA fans saying GT Sux than vice versa. It’s easy to be a UGA fan right now, but the worm will turn. Son of Sam you are a MORON. Richt will never leave UGA for a dump like Tallahassee or Miami. Don’t be jealous that we have a fantastic coach.

Ron- I noticed you didn’t say- UGA Better academics. I guess you actually know better. You forgot to include, however, UGA Better illiterates? UGA Better pole smokers? UGA Better trailer trash? and UGA Better cow college?

Best of luck to the man. It’s a tough decision, and I can understand why he did it. Many, many people are worried about the life in a big city.

That does make me wonder, though, how many times he’s been on campus. Sure, it’s in Atlanta, but it’s still pretty secluded. Crime on campus, especially on west where most athletes live, is pretty darned infrequent. If you are unfortunate enough to have your truck stolen, much less twice, you’re definitely not the norm. Moreover, most crimes are theft, and also usually attributed to someone being careless with their stuff.

I might add that leaving campus is not a necessity. I drive about once a week, if that. I walk to Publix and Mac’s when I need supplies to keep on living, and that’s about the extent of it. Tech can have a small-town feel if you want it to.

Anyway, best of luck to him, but you won’t see wistful tears in my eyes.

I admit, UGA has a great football program, and UGA doesn’t suck. The fans do. Probably the worst fans I’ve ever met. They have nothing else to talk about other than football. Really? Do you have nothing else to do over there?

So what, our football program doesn’t compare anywhere near yours. At least everyone has a lot of other things going for them.

Thanks Skip. You proved my point.

I bet you didn’t go to UGA - probably don’t have a degree period. But I bet you’ve got a camo “G” hat with a fish hook on it.

What a suprprise that a Tech blog is full of pro-UGA posts. Really, nobody cares about your opinion. As for Duke being so superior in academics to Tech, is a crock. They are both great academic institutions, with their focus in different fields of study. Plus Duke is private. Tech is one of the top public schools in the nation.

Also, I’m glad all of the UGA fans lives completely revolve around athletic teams, that you never played for, at a school most of you didn’t attend.

Finally, as for big bad, thug life, ghetto, Atlanta; take a look around. Tech is not in a horribly dangerous area, and Atlanta is one of the most thriving cities in America. Find me a city without crime anywhere in this country, I’ll meet you there.

Earth to Son of Sam! Pull your head out of your unwiped butt. FSU already hired Bowden’s successor. Richt will retire at UGA. Besides, moron. Check the record. Even Ray Goff owned your sorry football team. No matter who coaches at UGA Tech will still have to bend over every November. UGA is a destination job for top coaches now. Tech is, well, the place coaches go to ruin their careers. You will always suck hind t** in this state.

Hey, im a dawg fan and I think some of you guys might get owned for talking bad about him. Even though Drew will probably visit Duke, UGA was recruiting him pretty hard until he committed to Tech. His father has a close relationship to Coach Garner so they may jump back on him and offer. I think we are looking for two DT’s so he may just get the offer. I just hope most don’t retract their statements if the Dawgs do decide to jump back on him and recruit him.

Having family associated with Tech, Vandy, and Auburn, we all agree UGA has the worst fans of anybody we have ever encountered. This blog proves it.

They’re lucky to have Mark Richt to give the school at least a little bit of class.

Look at all the UGAy cretins on here who are obsessed with Tech. Instead, you should focus on the double-wides which are takin’ over your single-wide slots in your neighborhoods. These monster trailers are blockin’ your views.

Whoever says the area around GT is a ghetto obviously hasn’t been there since Atlantic Station was built. I live in West Midtown and see the area daily. It’s the one area of Atlanta that is still growing. Sembler is about to put in a big project at 14th at Northside.

This kid is an idiot, who has no balls whatsoever. Yes GA tech is surronded by some not so safe areas, but all he has to do is stay out of those not so safe areas. GA Tech Police usually do a good job of keeping the riff raff on the westside of Northside Dr. All he has to do is go east of campus towards midtown and he’s fine. Now if he goes west of campus to buy drugs like so many of them do, then he deserves to get robbed. But its not going to matter, because obviously this kid has no balls whatsoever. But wait last time I checked Durham, NC aint the safest place in the world either. Its not Atlanta, but still Durham has some ghetto parts to.

I would like to know if Duke “enriched” the offer somehow to dissuade a Georgia boy from choosing to leave the state? I personally would like to see what football coach will coddle this little boy with comments like he made. The things this boy thinks he will be avoiding by not living in Atlanta will be the very things he will have to deal with wherever he goes. He could always major in home economics or basket-weaving.

Son of Sam,

I have actually followed UGA since I can remember. My first ever sporting event was to a UGA-Ole Miss game back in the early 80’s that my parents took me too. There is no bandwagon riding for me. I have been with them for the good times and bad times. Why does anyone who is a fan of UGA these days have to be on the bandwagon. Has it ever crossed your mind that these individuals may have grown up watching them and following them?

STING TIME, Perhaps you should have spent more time on “acedemics”. Also, you used “Tech & atheletics” (we know what you meant)in the same sentence, which was clearly a mistake.

The fun started when you posted that pile of enthusiastic garbage and it’s still funny! I plan to laugh long after 11/29/08.

You know things are bad for Tech when they lose recruits to Duke and then proceed to accuse them of cheating. This sort of childish insecure behavior is usually reserved mostly for Georgia, and understandably so. Georgia owns Tech’s soul. But DUKE? This is really sad. I am embarassed for Tech fans.

Could there be something deeper at work in the minds of these classless Tech fans that bash kids for choosing a school with much better academics. Could it be that with coaches like Butch Davis at UNC and David Cutcliffe at Duke that Tech fans foresee a descent into the basement of the ACC in their football future? Their fear is what has turned them nasty folks.

DAWGFAN4LIFE, GT has the record of consecutive wins, which is 8 in a row. You have to win 1 more to tie the record and 2 to set a record. Oh yeah, you don’t have to be in a real big city to get in trouble, i.e., public drunk, drunk driving, carrying a concealed weapon, assault on a police officer, etc. These all happended near the UGA campus, and Athens is not a large city.Hehehehe.

Dick Tracy,

I’m looking back through the blog and having a hard time finding a Tech fan giving the kid a hard time about leaving. It happens. I do see a bunch of UGA fans talking a big game like they always do, always begging for people’s respect but never getting it. Anyways, for every kid that bails because he doesn’t want to live in a big city, we’ll get 10 more who do. I’m sure we’ll get some kids by February who had verbally committed somewhere else, no big deal, good luck to him.
