‘Christmas in June’ for newest Tech commit
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
It didn’t take Flowery Branch’s Daniel Drummond very long to say yes after receiving a scholarship offer from Georgia Tech on Saturday.
“We went into coach [Paul] Johnson’s office today and he offered Daniel a scholarship,” Drummond’s father, Jim Drummond said late Saturday. “Daniel accepted on the spot.”
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Drummond already has plenty of experience in a triple option offense, which will debut at Tech under their new coach this fall.
“We run a similar offense at Flowery Branch,” said Daniel Drummond, who was recruited as a B-back. “When the coaches from Georgia Tech came and watched me at spring practice, I guess I looked very good.”
Despite holding offers from Arkansas, Marshall, Oklahoma State, Troy and West Virginia, there was little drama for Drummond when he received the good news from Tech.
“This is an awesome opportunity,” he said. “It’s like Christmas in June. It’s what I’ve been working for, and I finally got it.
“Georgia Tech is where I want to be.”

Another nice building block for the future. Also nice that he is so familiar with Jaybo. This offense hinges on the QB/B-Back. These young players who know this offense have a leg up and don’t be surprised to see a lot of youngsters seeing playing time early.
Sorry to lose J.Evans, but Peeples and Wright should be in the mix early at the A-Back spots. It’s probably the easiest position to learn in this ‘O’ and if the hands are there with their 4.4 speed, they’ll get a chance.

Tech will have to fight to keep this commitment. He’ll have a big season now he’s at a school where other teams can’t single him out on the field. Drummond is a great kid and a superb athlete that can play numerous positions. There will be more big time offers soon. We’ll see if he signs there in Feb or enrolls early which is a possibility.

To the GA fans that ‘suggest’ Ryan Perriloux (sp??) & Jax St. are going to beat Tech … GSU has about the same chance of beating GA as Jax St. does of beating Tech.
Something to think about for all sports fans ……
Paul Johnson KNOWS HOW TO WIN…just like Mike Krzyzewski. Would anybody say Duke has THE BEST players - NO but MK sure as hell knows how to make these kids think, and perform, MUCH better than they actually are. PJ does the same thing! Navy people, NAVY! He WON GAMES - CONSISTENTLY at NAVY!! Won 10 games in one season there; hadn’t been done since 1905! Beat ND; hadn’t been done in 43 years! (go ahead GA fans and say how bad ND was last year — Navy hadn’t beat ND in 43 years!!, and if you think Navy’s players were better & more talented that ND’s, then GSU actually will beat GA this year) Paul Johnson KNOWS HOW TO WIN, and it ain’t gonna stop at Tech.
Oh, and he doesn’t lose to his main rivals very ofter either!

Wow, I am really looking forward to my fantastic quarterback skills back in the Flats for an 8th year of eligibility. Can’t wait.
And with stud recruits like this (I mean, look people, we beat out Troy and Oklahoma State for a recruit…we’re going all the way!!!!) we can’t be stopped.
Oh yeah, Georgia, when I am back on the flats for my 8th year, I am going to beat you singlehandedly! All of my braintrust, those 27 Georgia Tech fans, have all pulled out their calculators from their pocket protectors and devised a gameplan against UGA that can’t lose!
Oh, and that one hot girl walking around the entire campus of Georgia Tech? The 27 Tech fan/nerds will also be pulling out those calculators one more time to help me devise a plan to get her, too, hopefully befpre she discovers that real men are in Athens.
Wow, Athens is beautiful. I wish I was good enough to play for Coach Richt.

This recruiting class could be the best in decades if it continues. The great thing about this offense is the flexibility of it. We have two B-backs that could easily move to A-backs and also have QB’s that can play A-back or wr if we get into a pinch. This is a great pickup. A protoype FB. Good luck Drummond. Also hope Evans picks up somewhere closer to home as he was a great addition to GT. And Johnson and staff what can you say but deliberate and focused and showing they can recruit where Gailey and them left off the last two years on the upswing.

LSU, UF, and GT fans are so trivial. You are lame, you are gay…say something worth something.
LSU, you guys are good. The only thing is, we are pretty good at beatin the crap out of you….because we are also good.
UF, you guys enjoy taking your week off before you play us in the “neutral” Jax, but I’d love for Coach Richt’s idea of a Jax-Atl alernating schedule to pan out…I am sure you would not have so much to brag about.
And Tech…the only thing you EVER have going for you is rivalry momentum and adreneline. And now that UGA is locking down ALL of the best tallent in state, you have to continue your trend of getting the leftovers.
But after it’s all said and done, I’m all for the SEC. And asides from the pleasure I got from watching UF lose to michigan, I would have rather the SEC team win, mainly becuase it shows the strength of conference. And, if I have to say something nice, I will say the the Florida girls are hot, even if they are wearing jean shorts. And LSU, you guys went through a lot during Kat, and yall have a really special football team. Go Dawgs. Go SEC!

Great commitment for the Jackets. I am not a GT, but I am a fan of good football and good coaches. Paul Johnson is a great coach who plays great football. Give him two years to instill his program, year three will bring an ACC title. The man knows how to get it done, with the athletes he will recruit there it will only allow him to reach deeper into his offensive genius. Now that he will have athletes on the other side of the ball who can stop the pass, I think we are in for some big surprises out of GT. Great hire for GT, can’t wait to watch your games this year.

Its true that Johnson will have better talent at Tech than he did at Navy, but its also true that his opposition at Tech will have better talent than his opposition at Navy. Thus, its a wash. Navy played one of the softest schedules of any D-1 team every single year. Playing Temple, Indiana, and Duke every year is a far cry from playing Virginia Tech, Clemson, and UGA every year. Johnson is a good (read: not great) coach and a great fit for Georgia Tech, but he’s hardly the elite blockbuster head coach that some are making him out to be. If a lack of talent were the only thing holding Johnson back at Navy, why did he get absolutely throttled by Wake Forest last year? Please do not try and tell me Wake Forest has some huge talent advantage over ANYONE. Jim Grobe is an elite blockbuster head coach and that was the difference. Johnson will be good for a couple of 8 or 9 win season here and there, but that’s about it. He may even score a couple of wins against Georgia on their down years. But Tech fans need to be realistic about this. It won’t be any time soon. I think 2008 could get real ugly for the Jackets.

Atlanta Fan,
You may want to check your stats in terms of recruiting rankings according to Scout…
2007 Navy 118 WF 63 2006 Navy 93 WF 65 2005 Navy 117 WF 60 2004 Navy 107 WF 61
So, while Navy has averaged the 62nd class for the last 4 years Navy has averaged the 109th. That is out of only 119 teams. That is a pretty large disparity in my opinion. Also, while Navy may play a cupcake schedule of only 12 games they only out recruited 10 teams. With those recruiting rankings there should be no bigger cupcake than Navy but somehow they have managed to win at least 8 games the last 3 or 4 years.

You are going to see more and more Troy like colleges beating the old established school. Watch La. Tech or Central Florida in the next couple of years, or even SMU making a comeback in the USA conference before they bail out to a better conference. The Big East is making a living picking these schools up. Nothing stays the same in college football if it did Kentucky and South Carolina would never beat Georgia. Read the top 10 teams preseason and check em out post season. There is getting to be less and less cupcakes and less and less bullies.

Do you really want to play that game mts315? Okay, I’ll bite. Please look up Delaware’s recruiting ranking among D-1 schools. Having trouble finding it? Maybe that’s because they aren’t a D-1 school. They are a D-1aa school that also handed the great Paul Johnson a big fat loss last season IN ANNAPOLIS. So please tell me how DELAWARE has some talent advantage over Navy. While your at it, go ahead and do the same for Ball State, another 2007 Navy loss. I’m all ears.
I just keep hearing about how wildly successful this guy was at Navy. I appreciate how difficult it is to win at Navy but DELAWARE? Really? Geez. Spare me the hype.

Oh, I’ll play.
I would contend that Navy has less talent than Delaware or Ball State. If you are a recruit and your only 2 offers are Delaware (who was the runner up for the National Title for Div 1a to App. State) and Navy alot of kids would choose Delaware. With a commit to Navy after you play 4 years of college football, of which you can’t take a redshirt, you have to serve in the Navy for 4 years. Tell me how many highschool kids would choose that life over being a college player on a National Title contending 1a program.
Oh and by the way, Delaware’s QB was drafted Number 18 overall in last years NFL draft how many Navy players were drafted last year? Or how many are currently in the NFL?

mts315, very nicely done. Some of the Div.II teams get some excellent athletes, for a number of reasons. I surely hope that PJ has a great career at Tech, but it will take a while to see if he can compete successfully at Tech. It looks like he is doing some pretty good early recruitment.

Paul Johnson is not a “blockbuster” head coach???
Does anyone forget how he was able to completely dominate at the 1-AA level? When the talent level of his team is comparable to that of the opposition, the man flat out dominates. GSU was a title contender in their second year.
And before anyone starts ragging on the 1-AA coaches, just remember that one of, if not the best 1-A head coach in the country, Jim Tressel, followed the same path out of Youngstown State.
Paul Johnson is a winner. Period. He has won everywhere he went. As an assistant and as a head coach. Tech will be no different.

Good pickups by CPJ and his staff. And for those who make fun of the other offers these kids had obviously know nothing about college football. All schools sign plenty of two star and three star kids in addition to the blue chippers. Tech gets big time talent also, there are a couple kids at Tech that everyone will be hearing about for the next three years with offers from Georgia, Florida, FSU, etc. - Nesbitt, Dwyer, and Burnett.

GATOR COMP “Those losers think they invented football,” In 1895 (that’s eighteen-nineties), Pop Warner (I’m sure you don’t know who that is since you didn’t know that football existed before the nineteen-nineties)was hired as UGA’s first football coach, so we kind of did play a part in inventing football. “Its a shame that they haven’t won ‘NOTHING’ in 27 years” This statement implies that Georgia has won “everything” in twenty-seven years. Whereas I wish that was true, it simply is not, GRAMMAR CHAMP. “& act like they own the world.” Again, you give us too much credit, but, given the concrete numbers 45-37-2 and 59-38-5; we do, at least, own UF and Ga.
