Georgia beats Florida, Ga. Tech for Valdosta LB

Georgia’s football commitment list grew to 11 Saturday.

Mike Gilliard, a linebacker from Valdosta, said he has decided to play at Georgia. The 6-3, 205-pound linebacker is the third linebacker commitment for the class. Emanuel County Institute’s Dexter Moody and Chestatee’s Chase Vasser committed in January. At the time of Moody and Vasser’s commitments it was believed Georgia would only add another linebacker if Columbus’ Jarvis Jones was interested. Jones is considered the top linebacker prospect in the state and one of the top 40 players nationally.

But Gilliard was also in Georgia’s sights. In addition, the trio of linebackers now committed gives Georgia some possible versatility. Moody also can play safety. The 6-4 Vasser may also grow into a defensive end.

“[The depth] at linebacker was something that I looked at,” Gilliard said. “But I am not trying to be cocky or anything, but I think I can go in there an outwork them. I’m confident. I think I am the best.”

Gilliard averaged 9.3 tackles per game last season, had eight sacks and two interceptions. According to Scout.com, Gilliard is a three-star prospect. Rivals.com considers Gilliard a four-star prospect.

Gilliard chose Georgia over Georgia Tech and Florida.

Georgia is expected to secure no more than 20 commitments this recruiting season.

Georgia Tech’s football program is a total disaster. It’s beyond awful.

They’ll never beat UGA for another recruit and it’ll take them two years to win more than 6 games.

Haven’t seen Gilliard play. I don’t know how I missed Ealey commiting to the DAWGS, but when I saw him in the dome, I really hadn’t seen a back ignore the defense so much. He ran hard and seemed oblivious to the fact that a different jersey was hitting him and trying to tackle him. He ran as if there was no defense there. He is amazing.

Since they said they are only signing 2 lb’s this year. I would assume Jarvis Jones is now no longer being recruited since this is lb #3. Perhaps they are planning on moving these other guys around and hopefully will still recruit Jones. Richard Samuel will probably end up at lb as well. Anyone who saw him play in high school knows that is his better position. He is Rennie Curran on steroids. Unbelievable talent.

I’m behind CPJ and CPJ will recruit well, but it may not show up on RIvals and Scout. We’ll do fine and continue to be competative with the Dawgs in the upcoming years. Good luck to MG, but signing day is still 9 months away.

Ahhhh…spring is here again…time to fill our heads with the dreams of UGA football accomplishing something. If you’re happy with your Dawgs being a “regional” force, go for it. If you have the top recruiting class in the nation for 10 years in a row and no nat champs, somethings not clicking. Richt has clearly underachived at UGA considering the talent he has but he also knows that all he has to do to please the fans is to get the best recruits. Nothing else is expected.

One SEC title you backed into. One BCS victory against a team that didn’t belong in the Div II playoffs. Yeah…quite an accomplishment. Pffft. Whatever.

This kid was targeted by Richt and commited. If an athlete like Jones wants to sign i am sure UGA will make room for Him, if He doesn’t wait too long. ‘Ships are limited by a small senior class and UGA does not oversign, so recruits have to pay attention. I wouldn’t wait too long if I wanted to play at UGA. That being said, most needs have been met, UGA is solid on the d line, at qb, and even an ot. Rb and lb are looking good, but that five star wr in Memphis is getting a lot of attention. I would like to see a te signed and maybe a fb, but UGA should have room for a lb like Jones!

Truthteller, tell the truth. You can qualify things all you want, but averaging 10 wins a season in the SEC with two conference titles and three BCS bowl appearances in seven seasons is not exactly an illustration of mediocrity. I’m sure that Spurrier at South Carolina would love to “back into” an SEC title or even play in a BCS game (both of which the Gamecocks have done exactly zero times in their 110+ years of playing football). And what other SEC teams have done what Richt has done over the last 7 years? Clemson? Forget it. Tech? Come on. Alabama? They’re still hoping for the Bear’s corpse to re-animate. FSU? DOA. Miami? Yeah, they’ll be back any minute now. Florida? Yeah, they had a national title a year ago, but that was an aberrancy in what has otherwise been a pretty mediocre seven year span. Auburn? Getting warmer, but the Dawgs still have them beat. LSU? Okay, you’ve got me there. But Georgia’s beaten the Tigers soundly the last two times they’ve played—one of which was in the SEC title game you claimed they “backed into.”

Truth teller, here’s the real truth: for anti-Richt and anti-Georgia fans like yourself, the nightmare is starting right now. The next few years are going to be almost unbearable. Georgia will win a couple of SEC titles, have a Heisman winner (or two), and Richt will bag his first national crown. And then all you will have to crow about will be that the uniforms are too red or that the Georgia players hit too hard or that they were mean to you when they whipped your team’s outmanned butt. Georgia was at the top of the SEC in the most recent NCAA academic standards, they’ve outrecruited virtually everyone in the last two to three years and have the most returning talent in the country for next season.

So get your shots in now. In a year or so, you won’t have a whole lot to post about.

Georgia Sucks. And I’ll say so until they win four national titles in a row. And then, I’ll attack their character whenever I can find any flaw. I pull for a crappy team that can’t measure up and I’m bitter about being reminded every day how dominant the dawgs have been over the last 6 or 8 years. I’ll never tell you who I like because then you’ll see that I just like hating the Dawgs. My team may have beaten Georgia once or twice in the last five years. I’m the guy who rejoices when the great team that everyone likes to pull for starts loosing. I hate winners because I’ve never been one and never pulled for one. I’m angry, pasty-white, dungeon-sitter, who spends all his time at home posting on Rivals and Scout and the AJC hoping that people will like me…but they never do. Why is that?

Sorry, Truthteller, Tech Fans who are bitter about their once decent team collapsing on itself, C** Fans who thought Spurrier was the savior, Vol Fans who keep hoping that Phat Phil can fight of massive probabation or mediocrity for another year, Gator Fans who have selective historic memories, Auburn Fans who can dominate the state but not the division, Bama Fans who are so dellusional about their future success and the snake oil salesman your team hired, and all you other College Football fans who like to hate Georgia. The Dawgs are a story. A big one. They may not win the National Title this year. And if you’ve been listening, a lot of folks are telling you just that because of the schedule.

But they’re going to be landing in the top ten a heck of a lot for a lot of years to come. This year’s run at the title isn’t an abberation, it’s more of the same and it’s going to continue for a while.

So, if you’re a Dawg Hater, this is a great time for you. You’re going to have a lot to hate in the AJC, on ESPN, on Fox Sports, on Rivals and Scout, and all over the blogosphere. As Dawg fans, we love to hear you whine and your takes are quite humorous to the Dawg Nation and those with perspective on the issues.

Hey, truthteller, who do you pull for anyway? Nah, I don’t want to know.

Just a Bama fan checking in to watch the hate between the Dawgs fans and the jacket fans. Ya both got some braggin points. UGA is going to continue to dominate the state of Georgia in recruiting and they will have a solid program for years to come. You’ll never be the consistently national elite program that you mistakenly seem to think you are. But nevertheless a good, respectable program. As for Tech I wouldn’t worry too much. Paul Johnston is a winner and his triple option can make teams with inferior talent immediately competitive against better talent. His program will be eerily similar to West Virgina. 1 and 2 star recruits with a running qb beating the hell out of superior talent. And UGA knows all about that with the humiliation that those 1 star West Virgina boys threw down on the Dawgs a couple years ago. You UGA fans should chill a little bit. Every program ebbs and flows and just because your program is in a good but not great phase you don’t need to put down everyone else. I saw a couple posts of Dawg fans deriding my beloved Tide, Tenn., UF, Tech, Auburn, etc. Until you win more than 1 NC in 120 years of football you aint crap in our eyes. For God’s sake even Tech has 5 NCs. To me as an outsider even Tech has a more storied tradition than UGA. And they’re not afraid to travel outside the immediate southeast to play a big time intersectional game. I see UGA is doing that against Arizona State this year. In my 40 years of watching football that will be the first time I’ve seen the Dawgs leave the southeast to play a game. But at least its a small step in changing your program from a good 2nd tier regional program to a program to getting a little more national exposure. But don’t get too carried away. You still got a looooong way to go before being considered in the same breath as traditionals heavyweights like Ohio ST. and Michigan in the north, USC in the west, OKLA, NEBRASKA, and Texas in the South, and yes, even Alabama and Tennessee in the South. After all, if you travel around the country and actually talk about college football in the south Alabama people in other regions still recognize Bama as the biggest name in the South and Tennesse the 2nd biggest. You can talk all the crap you want to about Bear Bryant but you need to let it go. The man has been dead 25 years and you guys still got to bring him up over and over. In case you forgot we were the 4th winningest program of the 90s when you were sucking wind with Donnan and Ray Goof. The only reason we’ve been down in the 2000s is due to probation. Our 2nd time but still less than the 6 times UGA has been hit with NCAA major infractions. If you don’t believe me look it up with the NCAA. But if you want to talk recruiting lets talk about Bama’s #1 class last year. Like it or not Saban is building a looming juggernaut. JUST LIKE HE DID AT LSU. ROLL TIDE and get overselves dawg fans.

That’s true. I never enjoyed beating them down when UF was doing the beating down 16 out of 18 against the Dawgs. I kinda always felt sorry for them. But now that they finally are having some good years after being in the crapper for 20 years they act like they’ve always been good. Its kind of amusing but it makes you wonder what in the hell goes on in the heads of UGA fans. This is the most unaccomplished of the big SEC in the SEC that being Bama, LSU, and Auburn in the west and Uga, Fla. and Tenn in the east. Even Arkansas in the west has more NCs than Georgia and a more prolific bowl history.

It’s irresponsible for Georgia football fans to ever refer to academics as a strong point of their program. UGA football could care less about anything but using poor black kids then spitting them out when their eligibility is over. Georgia fans are so hypocritical; you worship the black players on Saturday afternoons in the Fall then ridicule them every other day of the year. And Richt is the worst hypocrite of all. The way he runs around carrying the Bible but uses young black kids as pawns in his egomaniacal power trips is beyond defense. I’d rather lose with integrity than win like Georgia does.

Hey bama_12titles,

I know they normally have to come south to do play us in a bowl game, but I really don’t believe Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Boston College, Nebraska, Texas, Texas A&M, Colorado (among others we have played) would be considered Southern schools. Also, we were scheduled to play UCLA in LA, but after we kicked their butts in Athens they cancelled the return match. Guess your 40 year memory is very selective selective.

As for the rest of the country considering ‘Bama the face of Southern football, unfortunately that may be true. As they see the cheating and coaching scandals, probation, the numerous arrests, the losses to D-II schools, the 3rd tear bowl games, the sanctification of Saban and 93K people showing up for a meaningless scrimage, they don’t see a very pretty face.

Why don’t you stick to the paraniod rantings on Finebaum and try to understand that there actually is life outside the state that does not revolve around Alabama football.

Hate me all you want but UGA has been an underachiever consistently. It’s the only thing their good at. Richt, as a person, is fantastic. As a coach he’s little more than average though I loved the heck out of the first touchdown @ FL.

It’s not just UGA during Richt’s tenure. UGA always leads you to believe this is the year and it never is. Nice recuiting class but they won’t achieve their potential…that’s just the way at UGA (rhyme intentional).

Cheer and gripe all you wish but you can’t explain away the Tennessee game and how incredibly unprepared they were for the game.

We’ve got a better defense than everyone on our schedule, we’ve got a better running game than “everyone on our schedule”, we’ve got more depth and experience than “everyone on our schedule”, we’ve got better coaching than “everyone on our schedule!!!” B Southerland “The Beast” will be blowing holes in defenses for unstoppable Moreno and King to run thru ALL DAY, and when defenses load the box Stafford will make them pay every time. What are you gonna do against that? Nothing. You’re gonna LOSE - thats what! Then youre really gonna cry when the fastest deepest defense youve ever seen is all over your offense like white on rice on a paper plate in a snow storm! AINT IT GREAT TO BE A GEORGIA BULLDAWG?!!! See ya in Miami, (we’ll be the ones holing up a big crystal trophy.)

Bama_12 titles and uva whoever: It’s obvious you are tech fans. Give it up. Only bees fans go under the guise of another affiliation to try to hurl cheap shots. I love how the nerds know all of Georgia’s stats against other teams. They have to have somebody else do their dirty work for them on the field. What a bunch of losers. 7 and counting.

Hello,

We at Guinness are pleased to announce that the University of Georgia officially has the dumbest sports fans in the world! Please accept our biggest and most heartfelt congratulations! In fact, we don’t see any competition in the foreseeable future, so we are retiring the category. Congratulations! UGA will have the dumbest sports fans in the world until the end of time!!

As long as we have representatives from Guinness on this blog, I want to contribute to their efforts. Please take note of the queers on North Avenue. They have the gayest fans in the world. Add that to your scrolls. I would mention their athletic prowess (or lack thereof), but I don’t believe there is a Guinness Book of World Mediocrity.

Latest NCAA report: UGA athletes trail only Vandy in graduation rates. Latest pre-season football polls: UGA picked one, two, or three. If the WSJ did surveys, it’d show more CEO’s, CFO’s, COO’s, presidents, and business owners from UGA in the state of GA than any other school. Hopefully we still get J.Jones. Like the article says, “…trio of linebackers now committed gives Georgia some possible versatility. Moody also can play safety…Vasser may also grow into a defensive end…” Contrats to Mike G. for making a great choice.

Bama Fans: If UGA counted National Championships like Alabama, we’d print T-shirts that say “Got 7?”. But since we only claim consensus MNC’s, UGA has won 2 MNC’s. Alabama has won around 6-7, stop lying to yourself and claiming MNC’s when you didn’t win the conference or got waxed in Bowl Games. The 1946 UGA squad went wire to wire undefeated, untied, won the bowl game, was not on probation, and had the heisman runner up and UGA doesn’t claim a MNC. You have lost 6 straight to your in-state rival, 5 straight to LSU, 4 straight to the Dawgs, and lost to LA Monroe last year at home. You guys have an overinflated sense of self worth. Bama is a smaller school than UGA, in a poorer state, with about 1/2 of the the in-state recruiting base. Right now Bama is about the 6th best program in the SEC. The wins and championships you achieved in the 60’s and 70’s you should be proud of, you earned them, but that’s not to help you win today, and it certainly doesn’t make you a better program TODAY. I try to stick up for you guys, but you make it very difficult.

Florida Fans: You’ve had a great run the last the 20 years. But to this date in 100+ years of football, you’ve never had an undefeated season and your only 2 MNC’s were “backed” into. Now I’m not taking away, you were the best team, but lets not take shots about “backing into” anything. SECC are the ONLY thing that matter because they are actually won on the field and they’re awarded by their actual governing body, unlike the MNC. Georgia still leads the series by a double digit margin, leads in SECC, leads in wins, bowl appearances, bowl wins, all americans and basically every other measure of success. Not to mention UGA won on the field last year, the most relevant history. Further you guys have not had the best press here recently.

Tech Fans: Get over yourselves. A Georgia graduate founded your school. Classes were being held in Athens 100 years before Tech held it’s first class at the intersection of two dirt roads north of downtown Atlanta. You owe your existance to the intellectual property of UGA. Ease off the “imbred, redneck” comments. It makes you look rediculous. You guys have a great school, and you need to stop making excuses for yourself and worrying about what UGA is doing. UGA is only your problem one Saturday out of the year.

Auburn Fans: Nothing to chide you all about. You don’t get the credit you deserve and your fans are generally well informed and friendly.

As a Georgia fan, reading post from opposing teams fans is comical. GT fans need to focus on their football program before they start bashing other teams. I will admit some GA are absolutely obnoxious, but these are the people who have just jumped on the bandwagon so they do you reflect the passion some of us have for UGA. I don’t care what our teams record is, I have supported them through many down seasons. For those who claim GA has no tradition please refer to the facts before making such a idiotic claim, this just shows you have no knowledge of CF history.

To the Alabama fan, who claims they are so great, when was the last time they were in contention for the SEC title or NC? You guessed it the early 90’s which was almost 2 decades ago. UA has a long way to go, so don’t proclaim greatness based on the success 40 years ago. Alabama is at the bottom of the SEC and that is not likely to change. ONE good recruiting class doesn’t mean anything. You will once again be on the bottom looking up to the powerhouse programs: UF, UGA, UT, Aub, LSU. 6th best maybe and I emphasize maybe. Alabama is terrible, so your opinion has little credence on this board.

To all the Florida and Tennessee fans, I love your passion for the game. Without you guys SEC football would not be nearly as fun. As a GA fan, I respect both programs and think highly of both programs. Ignore the “post-Richt era” UGA fans and don’t stoop to their level, b/c what some douche bag forget to remember, this is still just a game. Alabama is still terrible, I only wish I knew a Louisiana-Monroe fan.

First of all, this type of trash doesn’t belong in ANY program. He was given an opportunity of a lifetime in getting a first rate education and he p** it away. This is absolutely despicable. And for all of you haters out there, This is not what our program is about. This article was in today’s paper here and better represents Urban Meyer and the University of Florida.

OK, let’s get back to the recruiting. Honestly Nerds, do you really think you stand much of a chance to get such a high recruit if UGA and UF are involved in the recruitment?

Let’s take it a step further. I’m the recruit: “Wow, I have many great football colleges recruiting me. I would love to be in the NFL for my career. Let’s see, There is UGA, UF, FSU, yadda yadda, oh and GT! I know I’ll go to GT……. NOT!!!!”

Get a grip Nerds. Your team is not even in the same league as most teams in the south. Leave the football to teams that have done something in the past couple decades. In short, shut your pie holes.

Tech isn’t in the same league as most teams in the south? Really?

Well we’ve beat Auburn twice in a row. We do fairly well against Clemson. We’re second only to FSU in ACC wins the last ten years. We’ve been to 11 straight bowl games, Tennessee, LSU, and other SEC “powers” can’t even claim that. Who are we not better than? South Carolina, Miss St, and Ole Miss are a joke. We own Miami (three in a row). We’ve split with VT since they’ve joined the conference. And we’ve should’ve beaten Georgia 3 of the last 4 but it just didn’t go our way. UGA hasn’t exactly blown Tech out since the 51-7 debacle and every game since then has gone down to the last quarter, most of the time down to the last possession. Get over yourselves Georgia, most of your tradition started in the last 6 years. I can’t wait to see you go down in flames.

I’m amazed that you dawg fans get giddy over a new recruit in May. I’m amazed that you feel your dogday afternoons are over. In reality, you should go ahead and face the fact that Florida is going to destroy your perfect season this year. Florida will be the one to go to the NC game. Your team, however talented it may be, will end up third behind UF and UT in the east. And to those who say the Gators have selective memory…look at the last 20 years and what has your team really done? nothing. that’s it..nothing but brag about your great days of success that half of you weren’t born yet or too young to remember. Just remember the last 18 years…16 losses to UF out of 18 games…poor dawgs…heartbreak this year again.

To bama _12 titles and all others who don’t think UGA has risen to ELITE level status as a program YET!! Just a few stats for ya - all of these since 2001- CMR’s first year as head coach: 72-19 overall record, 2 sec titles, 3 BCS sugar bowl berths, with 2 wins, ranked in the top 25 EVERY year, ranked in the top 6, 4 out of 7 years!!If that aint elite status what the heck is??!! I tell ya what, we’ll even put a rule on it that you must do it for a decade to be ELITE- pryor to CMR first year UGA had been ranked in the top 25 4 consecutive years also!! SO thats 11 straight years in the top 25 final poll!! We are an ELITE program and will continue to be for the next decade too!! so all you haters can step off, cuz we pimping!!! GO DAWGS!!

oh yeah, and 1 more thang: in the 2008 calendar year, UGA has already won the SEC titles in basketball AND baseball, so if we win the SEC in football that will be SEC titles in ALL 3 of the major sports in the same calendar year - do you know what that spells people? E-L-I-T-E!! LMAO

It’s pretty sad and speaks volumes of your fan base, or lack of, when you have to hide and act as if your with another college. For that I hope they wax your sorry team for another 8 years straight. At least Georgia can back up their talk, as much as I hate to admit it. See you Dawgs in the fall. Should be a classic!

Dawgy, TPS reports, now that sh!t was funny. Don’t make me come steal your stapler and move you to the ground floor.

Hey Supes, please tell us your logic of how Fla will win by 2 TD’s?? It is true, you guys can win, I’ll give you that. But can you please tell us dumb ole dawg fans why u think that? I mean our defense is going to be better than last year. And my boy Stafford has another year under his belt. If UF takes us, it will just feel like business as usual, and that’s unfortunate to say. That’s why Richt did what he did with the endzone thing last year. He had to get UF out of his player’s heads, and please don’t call it classless or a gimmick. Nothing else had worked to break that curse in a while, so he tried something different. Anyone who knows Richt knows he’s just the opposite. And Supes, I just read an article on Tebow and him visiting prisons and preaching to the guys. I was very impressed and he just went way up in my book, even though he was never that far down to begin with.

Now, there’s your complement on the Gators. Can u top being an azzhole now???????
