Notre Dame, others show interest in Tucker RB

Tucker junior running back/linebacker Jonathan Davis already has scholarship offers from Central Florida, Clemson and UAB.

And with spring practice set to begin on Thursday at Tucker, additional offers are likely to follow.

“He’s been getting a lot of attention with coaches coming through,” Tucker coach Franklin Stephens said. “South Florida is interested, but they’re kind of waiting on their head coach to offer him.

“Illinois came in on Monday and they got kind of excited. And Notre Dame saw him in a morning workout last week and they became intrigued by him.”

Memphis and Mississippi State have also inquired about the 5-foot-9, 195-pound Davis.

JD is a exceptional talent and even better young man. His heart and effort on the football field will be an asset to whatever team that he chooses. I wish the best for JD and his family; I will be rooting for him wherever he goes. Sure wish UGA could find room for him this year. He is a winner!

Davis is a force on both sides of the ball. He may very well be the best player in the entire state of Ga.!! Explosive power and speed !! Somebody from UGA needs to hurry on down to Dat Tuck and give him a scholarship offer !! Wait and see football fans,,,, AAAA player of the year,,, soon enough,,, you’ll see. I just hope he’ll keep his nose in the books and jis butt out of trouble. DO YOUR SCHOOLWORK young man !!

From actual students who attend St. Pius and Tucker, he is an awful student and does not take schoolwork seriously. Before he “transferred” from Pius to Tucker, he supposedly was failing several classes and Pius let him withdraw just before the end of the quarter, knowing he was flunking out but still letting him play. This way he could “transfer” to Tucker and still be eligible. Most of the non-athlete students at Tucker have low regard for JD; says he is a jerk. I hope he and his father grow up and start taking his academics seriously. Notre Dame? No way, he won’t pass their character requirements.

I know the kid personally and this is another example of a kid with lots of talent that has gotten away with not following the rules from an early age. There is a big chance he will end up in a prep school and not in a DI college unless someone once again fudges the rules for him. Can you say Marcus Ball.

Please stop promoting this kid. He has been a problem since park days. He was kicked out of St Pius, he gets away with all this stuff at Tucker because he plays football. His grades are in the toilet and his attitude stinks. Not hatin and I can be one of the biggest junk talkers myself but JD is not a team player. He won’t get much offers because when they come by the school and looks at his grades they just walk away. JD you have a lot of talent but character counts too. Just look at this years draft and AJC stop highlighting a guy without considering the entire package. It has to stop somewhere.

I hope none of this negative is true. If it is, ND and UGA will pass I can assure you. At most schools now you MUST have the grades. Once you have a good GPA the coaches at the top schools look for a player that can help his fellow players get better with a high moral resume and work ethic. Lets see who offers and where he ends up. In my HS days( all boys, 1,700 of us) the guys, teachers all got behind the guy who was lagging behind but was still trying. We would make sure we pulled him along to get it done. If this is not happening to this young man, you have to wonder why not?

I sit here and read these blogs on a daily basis and nothing makes me more upset than some grown a** men or women belittle these kids character; also puting them in a negative light in the public eye. Mr. Reallity, if you or other pundits live in a glass house please cast the first stone. Davis is an exceptional athlete with great skill and he definitely plays bigger than his size. As a former sports writer, I believe that JD is a next level type of player because he plays above and beyond competition. He may not be your ‘model’ student, but like the game of football he will eventually get there. Im going to make sure of that. Whether you like it or not, he is one of the best players in the nation. It’s people like you that motivate me to push kids even harder. What you need to do is come up with a solution, instead of promoting the problem. I end by challenging you to be a BRIDGE BUILDER instead of a BRIDGE BURNER. By the way, Marcus Ball didn’t go to prep school, he got into Florida State, started as a freshman before tearing his ACL. He will be back in full strength this season.. JD, go to school wherever you can grow the most as a man on and off the field.

First off Calleb O, you are an idiot. First off, if you don’t know him or his dad personally, then you have no idea what you’re talking about. Like some of the users above, I know them personally, and I agree with that he has some character issues. It’s people like you who are always making up excuses for kids like JD. Yes, he is a kid, but that is no excuse for him to take this opportunity for granted and just assume he’s going to get a pass because of his athletic abilities. Yes he could be a great athlete at the next level, but I am sick and tired of athletes like him and there enabling parents not putting enough emphasis on school and their character. They have to learn now that these coaches at the next level, including the NFL, are not taking the chances that they use to on athletes with questionable character and poor work ethic in the classroom, just ask Marcus Ball and Ryan Perrilloux. Both of them are sitting at home right now with a world of talent and no D-1 scholarships…

For the record, I like the kid and I hope he gets his act together and is successful at the next level. I just hope it’s not too late…

Callab O… good for you. I hope you are in a position to pull this kid along if he needs it. Grades, grades, grades thats is where it sounds like he needs to concentrate. I wish you and all that will help him the best. I also trust that his effort will be equal to yours. If he is part of the positive program at Tucker HS, good things should be just around the corner. Hard work is usually rewarded.

Swole… If you are correct then maybe I am way off base. If the parents are not the ones making the tough decesions where the young man can benifit, no group in his HS is going to make a difference. If he and his parents are putting in the extra effort anything is possible. It still comes down to hard work and good guidence from the home.

Swole, I am not trying to make excuses for anyone because they are tools of incompetence that build bridges to nothingness. All I am saying is people need to uplift this young man, while he still is young. Yes, I do know JD personally. If you read, I covered him while he was at St. Pius and Tucker. I do not, however, teach him, nor live with him. The issue is his grades and conduct, which can be policed up if the right people surround him. Like I stated before, uplift is the key. I can care less about what you think about me; just giving my interpretation of the situation. Good luck to any kid on the next level. I just hope you don’t have nothing personal against the kid. He is just a kid; people make mistakes. As for Ball, he was granted a release to transfer from Florida State. One thing I believe we all can agree on is that character, discipline and work ethic starts at home. If the parents are messed up, then the kids will be. I think we are all pulling for JD. But we still have to show kids that talent is not enough. By only concentrating on his talent, we perpetuate the stereotype of young athletic african american men. To constantly publicize a player who has not valued grades or behavior teaches those other players that are watching him the incorrect example. As for Marcus Ball, generally “released from scholarship” means something more than they just up and decided to go to a JuCo eventhough they were set to be a starter. Calleb if you are a sports writer like you claim, you know better.

I follow these blogs and must say that each time there is an article about this man there are numerous negative blogs. The guy must have done something to bring this on. There are several articles about other kids who could promote “haters” but they don’t post anything bad about them. There is something there that promotes this…where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Caleb O, if you were a writer, hopefully you switched careers. Your babble is too rambling. Regarding the negative comments about JD, notice the comments didn’t say he wasn’t a good athlete. They’re just saying he is a self-centered, self-servinng jerk. How many chances should he get? From his performance at Tucker, its obvious he learned nothing from his Pius experience, other than some adults and coaches will always look the other way, as the Tucker and Pius ocaches and administration have. One other thing that is not mentioned is that JD is already 18 so he’s a year older than most juniors. He’s 18. An adult. Stop making excuses for the man. Pius and Tucker should have taken Marist’s cue on how they handled a similar situation with Donovan Tate when he attended Marist a couple of years ago. He wouldn’t do the work, thought he could slide by on this athletics, and he was quickly shown the door. Last, Caleb O, just hit the submit key once, OK?

Once again, we have another uneducated racist speaking absurdities about a bunch of nothing. I am not going to waste my breath or intelligence on you. But sir or mam, pleae realize a change is going to come. Talking to you people is like trying to give instructions to babies on how to tie a bow tie. Honestly, I hope JD can work on his character so he can quiet all of the darilics and naysayers. I responded to the blog because I am tired of people chestising these gifted athletes. Yes, you are intitled to you own opinion, but too many of you live in glass houses. I scoff at whoever questions my ability to write; For starters check my resume, a three-time award winning journalist. If you going to talk about a problem, come up with the solution. Like I stated earlier, be a bridge builder and not a bridge burner. Good luck to all this season.

I am a current educator who sees this all too often. I read from your blog that no one should chastise these gifted athletes…maybe that is the problem. No one is taking the time to do so. What if, heaven forbid, this man should have an injury that prevents him from pursuing football? Where will he be? In what way would he contribute to society? All adults should ask themselves this when they see this sort of problem, including parents! There are programs out there for this type of student, but when one does not wish to utilize it or he and his parents think that there is no problem, what can another person do? The first step is the school level putting down the gauntlet and the next has to come from the family admitting there is a problem. I’m not necessarily referring to this man, but if things are the way they are presented, there is a HUGE issue that should be addressed and it HAS to begin at school. A game or two on the bench can work wonders on an ego!!

Either Notre Dame hasn’t done much investigation on Davis or they have just about hit the bottom. Davis couldn’t pass the 10th grade at St. Pius, he isn’t being recruited by the major SEC schools because of his grades, so don’t think he’ll be at the Dome.

BTW - he is a very good player but it’s likely to come after JUCO.

As the one person on this blog that knows JD personally (since 8th grade). It is apparent that the haters are drawing conclusions based on old, faulty of assumed information. To them he could go to Norte Dame and become a Rhodes Scholar and they would still talk about 10th grade at St Pius. So do us all a favor and admit that you just don’t like him. The definintion of a hater is one that wishes ill will on another without direct provocation. (That’s non partisan) Some Sense. The Section 8 crowd knows that Some Sense, too bad you don’t

To Calleb O: If you are the writer for the Dekalb Neighbor, I have met you and admire the work you’ve done. However, after reading the entries about JD, I must ask why you resorted to calling someone an uneducated racist? Do you know the race of the writer? From the entries I read, nobody mentioned JD’s race, nor even implied such. What I sensed from the writers was a disdain for JD not trying and feel the same would have been written if he was white. It’s disappointing that you resorted to playing the race card when I really feel everyone was talking about JD’s character, not the color of his skin.
