Five Georgia commits make Scout list
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Five players who have committed to Georgia are in the top 100 of the Scout.com National 300 released today.
Abry Jones made one of the biggest jumps nationally. The Northside-Warner Robins defensive tackle is rated the state’s top No. 1 player and the top defensive tackle in the country. Jones was elevated to a five-star recruit because of an impressive showing last weekend at the UnderArmour/Scout.com Elite Camp at Auburn. He is the Bulldogs’ top-rated player who is committed.
Other top 100 players pledged to Georgia are Florida quarterback Aaron Murray (No. 31), ECI running back Washaun Ealey (No. 79), Oconee County quarterback Zach Mettenberger (No. 83) and Tennessee lineman Austin Long (No. 91).
Murray is one of seven quarterbacks rated as five-star recruits and gives Georgia two of the nation’s top 10 at the position. Mettenberger is rated No. 9.
Ohio State has the most top 100 commitments with six. Texas has five, and LSU and USC have four each.
The state’s other Top 100 recruits are Carver linebacker Jarvis Jones (No. 57), Tucker running back Jonathan Davis (No. 73) and Washington defensive back Brandon Smith (No. 75), all uncommitted.

UGA fans continue to amaze me. The Dawgs didn’t even win the SEC East last season, but from the talk you would think they won the SEC and played for the NC.
UGA should be pretty good this year, but so should LSU, Florida, Auburn, Arizona ST., and Alabama. Who knows about Tennessee, but they did stomp UGA last year. Heck, the UGA cakewalk games against Central Michigan and Georgia Southern might give the Dawgs trouble and Tech should have the triple-option working by the time Georgia rolls around.
This is the kind of season that gets a coach fired. Unrealistic fan expectations. Just look at 2000 when UGA fans were talking National Championship. It got Donnan fired.

Playing at Miami, coaching at FSU (Free Shoes U), and telling players to intentionally get a sportsmanship penalty is pretty much the antithesis of class.
But that really doesn’t matter to UGA — all that matters is winning, at all costs. Hey, if your school sucks, I guess it helps to have sports to feel good about.

Hey Bill…
Will you tell Coach Richt I said “Hello” next time you guys have dinner. Obviously, you must know him well since you know “for a fact” he wanted Omar. Please share any other insights that you have, that would be awesome.
Who didn’t want Omar? Reality is, we already had the #1 rated DT (at the time anyways) in DeAngelo Tyson committed, so we didn’t seriously pursue Omar until the very last minute. Even then, we couldn’t guarantee him a scholarship since we were full (too bad Dwayne Allen ditched us last minute) so of course he’s going to go with someone who can (UF in this case). Otherwise, it might have been a different story and Omar just might have went to UGA instead had there been room.

To the people who don’t know so much but want to comment about UGA football:
“Erk” - the 2000 season, scheduling or NC talk didn’t get Donnan fired. 2-10 against UF and UT and losing to GT 3 years in a row did.
“Say What” - playing at Miami and coaching at FSU makes him classless? Did he get the free shoes? Did he brawl with teams? Um, sorry - this is the same man who adopts handicapped children, takes missionary trips to 3rd world countries and yells at his team for stomping on a logo at Vandy. And before you say “he ordered the whole team on the field”, let me go ahead and set you straight - it was only supposed to be the offense on the field and there weren’t supposed to be any individual acts. Classless? Whatever you want to think I guess…

Well Flyin Dawg I stand corrected. I’ll have to read the offical SEC website.

Tennessee did whip us pretty good. I will admit that any day of the week. That is why they got the tie breaker and represented the Eastern Division in the SEC Championship. I am just sick and tired of people saying we could not even win our own division. We did. Look it up. Tennessee is not listed as the Eastern Division Champs- they are the Co-Champs just like us. A few years back all the UT and UF fans were b*** when UGA had the tie breaker and got to play for the SEC Crown- so get over it.

These recruiting rankings have always been more for conversation than for predictors for future performance. Now that so many of the players commit before the rankings come out, tney are even more suspect. News flash - If UGA had gotten commitments from a completely different list of players, they still would end up with 5 or so players on the Rival list. When the “football factories” get a commitment, the players are automatically assumed to be great players, so they automatically get pushed up Rivals’ list. It has little relevance to the real world.

Actually….Chase Vasser isn’t on the list, and he’s committed to the Dawgs. Maybe, just maybe, the best players just want to play for the best programs, i.e. LSU, USC, Ohio State, Florida. This, in turn, makes it tough for Tech to get Blue Chippers. However, you’re bound to stumble upon a great player occassionaly, much like Troy or UAB. Personally, I don’t pay attention to the rankings, but, instead, look at what schools have offered the player. If players, such as Georgia’s commitments, have offers from all of the top flight schools, such as the ones listed above, then they’re probably pretty good. If they have offers from UAB, Marshall, NC State, Maryland, or Georgia Tech, then UGA probably will not offer. Rankings are based on personal evaluations of players’ talents, which leaves a margin for error. However, if he has offers from 10+ top flight schools, he’s probably pretty damn good….despite his ranking. Now….let’s go tickle fight!!!!!!!!!!

I was not hyping anything last year. Most of my former classmates at UGA all agreed last year before the season started that if we won 10 games, we would be very surprised. Year before that, I said we would be 8-4. I have never been this pumped about an upcoming season. We have always had a few holes or were thin on the depth chart somewhere. This year is different. Outside of Place Kicker, where can you find a weakness with this team? I understand it is all objective, but can’t we have our fun without all of you coming on our blog and complaining about our fans? I don’t go to your blog and gripe about gator fans, do I? Or Tech fans, or Vol fans, or Tiger fans…… Get it.

I love where the Dawgs are now in talent and as a team. It’s obvious from the National press, but the real tell tell sign is the ramped up hate from our fellow Football fans from other schools. We are good enough to beat ANYBODY we play now, And boy they don’t like it. I’m not saying we will win them all, but they all better bring their A game. That has not been the case lately. You don’t think that ARSE whipping we gave Fla. won’t be on the Gators mind this year…Oh yea baby.

Pardon me Erk, but you lost all credibility by insinuating Alabama might be respectable this year. Even if Alabama pulls a few upsets and manages to defeat say, Louisiana Monroe, Alabama and respectful, are two words that should never be put in the same sentence. As for Georgia Tech being competitive with the triple option, there might be some very good reasons every other college football coach with hopes of winning championships, has already junked the triple option.

Hey 78 DAWG, you really need to get a clue. Ohio St and Texas players won’t qualify? I luv the Dawgs and CMR, but you do know UGA has probably the worst graduation rate in the SEC for its football and basketball teams. There seems to always be a few players with drug and alcohol issues during every offseason. You WILL go to class if you play for Coach Tressel at OSU. I really think Dawg nation is getting too cocky. We haven’t one the ring since 1980 and now we think we got bragging rights?! NO EXCUSES IN 2008, UGA, TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN BUSINESS! GO DAWGS!

Thanks Hawkinsville Dawg. I was aware of Blair coming in from the recruiting class, but he is unproven. What you said about the others eases my concern. I don’t get to watch South East sports shows up here in Philly, so the AJC is my only link to sanity. FlyingDawg, let me set you straight, you need it. Albert Hollis was not a “dud”. He hurt his knee so badly before his freshman year that he almost lost his leg. He never played again. You have no idea whether or not he would have lived up to his 5 stars or not, but I can tell you he was no dud. Were you at the spring game where he played and recieved a standing ovation? Evidently not. Bill about johnnie farms, with the commitment of Long, he was basically taken of the UGA list. They need one more OL this class and it needs to be a tackle. Now to make this easy for you, Farms is a guard. Got it? Who else needs some correct info?

Oh… Thanks for the research info regarding the underclassmen talent. But I remember the kudos for UGA’s class every year, so I’m just surprised by this year’s showing in terms of the lack of NFL-caliber athletes in the Senior class. I just wonder if CMR is able to coach-up any players. Maybe some are actually coached down, based on this year’s showing. Something recruits may want to consider. It’s tough when many of the UGA recruits ultimately seem to have peaked in high school.

Rankings in general are bull**. How in the world can some fat fart, who has never even been close to a D1 lockeroom let alone played in a game become these experts who predict talent. Most of them listen to what the kids tell them they ran in the 40 as well as their season stats. Then they see who the big D1 schools have offered and finally they might go see a playoff game or two. Then all of a sudden they know enough to come up with 300 guys out of 10,000. Give me a break! It’s a scam for people to buy a subscriptioin to their website.

I’m not a UGA fan & there is way too much hype on these blogs about JUNIOR committments, but those that are knocking recruiting rankings as irrelevant, a scam, etc don’t have an understanding of it. Ignorance isn’t an excuse to write-off something. TRUTH is Rivals’ & Scout’s analysts do a huge amount of research, watch tape, attend camps, etc year round. It isn’t an exact science, it’s educated analyst & prediction. Look at the correlation between recent powerhouse programs, nat’l champ winners & participants, conference champs, BCS/major bowl participants, schools w/ the most NFL players or draft pics, etc and the schools that’ve been in the Top 10 - 20 of the recruiting rankings. It’s not even debatable. There are exceptions (FSU), but other factors (players suspensions/dismissals, academically ineligible, injuries, coaching etc) play into that.

UGA doesn’t have high standards? Interesting, considering it is now more difficult to get into UGA than it is to Nerdville.

Ah yes, the ole “Uga is harder to get into than Tech” comment. Every time I hear that I remember Leonard Pope’s website. Yes, indeed.

Which bowl did Tech go to last year, or the year before, or the year before, etc.? Too bad there’s no NIT in football, huh.

Hey, good for UGA and the other schools already seeing the recruiting success, but I cannot figure out one thing in this recruiting game. I don’t, for the life of me, understand what schools like UGA, Clemson, etc. say to these kids to convince them. Not dissing the schools, but some of these kids actually believe the promises of immediate playing time when there are 2-4 players ahead of them that are rated as high or higher. I just don’t get it. Or maybe I do and high school kids don’t.

Hey,my beloved Dawg Fans, why don’t we ignore the “static” from all these naysayers from other schools who are obviously jealous of UGA’s status in the sports world. That’s why we get so many top ranked highschoolers … they just want to be part of a first class sports program with an accomplished leader like CMR, etc. Georgia is a recognized “Class” University and if this weren’t true, why would these wantabees from other unnamed schools be on our blog postings so much? Can you believe how badly they demean themselves by even opting to open their mouths on a UGA blog? Does that mean they don’t have one of their own or don’t they have enuff fans to create a blog of their own? Kinda pathetic, isn’t it? So, like I said, ignore the “static”.

Richt continues to recruit the best players in the country, only to have his teams underachieve during the season because of poor coaching and lack of moral leadership. The 2008 season will be one of disappointment followed by intense whining, just like last year.

Hey Dothan Dog:
The name of the blog is “College Recruiting”. Kinda pathetic that you can’t read, isn’t it?
Georgia recruits well every year, but it hasn’t translated into a NC in 28 years. Kind pathetic isn’t it?

My problem with tha Bulldogs is they are getting more and more loaded and good players are quiting our team. Im facing we may beat Ga once in a while but they are consistently going to kick our a$$. Our program is in dissaray and this triple option hasnt brought Navy many wins over big time programs. We will sorely miss Tashard Choice. I havent heard -how many 09 commits does GT have?. Are they all 4 stars and studs like Gas commits??? My wife says shes going to start pulling foe Ga.

These Tekkies don’t seem to know much about good football— which is understandable since they don’t see much of it each season
Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia play in the top division of the top conference— and it is very hard to go “all the way.” Also, these teams recruit the top talent and lose key players early to the NFL, which may cost them a conference or national championship. It’s simple to understand— for knowledgeable football fans. Those who don’t……well?

Let’s face it. Only reason the Dawgs are talking right now is that they finally beat UF last year (against UF’s fourth string DL KM had 250 rushing yards). They obviously acted with little integrity dring that game…and now UF is actually paying attentin to the “rivalry” again. I liken UGA to Houston Nutt’s teams at Arkansas….but really not much better. Dawg fans better hope that AU and UF have lots of injuries again or it could be another very disappointing year. Please keep hyping your team. Oh, and by the way, UGA has historically consistently recruited better than both AU and UF, at least for the past 20 years. So this really isn’t anything new.

I wonder where Ealey will stand in this ranking after next year. When he possibly breaks the records he set this past season.
