QB recruit helps UGA land star lineman
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Georgia has once again stepped outside of the state and secured a commitment for the Class of 2009.
Austin Long, an offensive lineman from Briarcrest Christian Schools in Memphis committed to Georgia Monday night, according to Scout.com. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound lineman is the Bulldogs’ 10th commitment and second straight from outside the state. Aaron Murray, the top quarterback prospect in Florida, committed to Georgia last week.
It was Murray who took the lead in recruiting Long.
“I was hoping to narrow it down to two or three schools over this weekend,” Long said. “I really thought about it and talked to my parents about it and prayed about it. Then I was talking to Aaron Murray and he really helped. I asked him all kinds of questions and if he was still happy now that he has committed.
“He told me he was happy and he was going to recruit me until I committed,” Long said. “He told me he wanted to be a part of the No. 1 recruiting class.”
To get that class Georgia may have to secure a few more top prospects, one of which Long has already started to work on.
“Soon as I talked to [Georgia offensive line coach Stacy] Searels, I called Marlon Brown and told him I was going to start working on him,” Long said.
Brown is considered one of the top prep wide receivers in the nation. He has a list of 15 schools, of which Georgia is one.
Long had offers from several schools in the Southeastern Conference and was also drawing interest from Florida State. He visited the Georgia campus during spring practice. He also took unofficial visits to North Carolina, Florida, Florida State and Alabama.
Long is rated as a top 10 tackle by Scout.com.

It’s GREAT to be a GEORGIA BULLDOG! I can’t wait till September, the slaughter begins and we are set up for a few good years! Meanwhile, the Techies are setting up a BS offense. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Frank Sinkwich, Charlie Trippi, Frank Ros, Terry Hoague, Rodney Hampton, Tim Worley, Richard Seymour, Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno and A.J. Green are all GEORGIA Bulldogs despite attending high schools for other states and I dare say they are just as much a Georgian as you or I. Richt is recruiting elite athletes, scholars and good citizens. He got burned a few years ago by recruits who were athletes but not scholars and/or good citizens. Now we have the opportunity to get the best in Georgia and cherry pick from the rest of the country. As a result we’re a legitimate number 1 team heading into 2008. The only reason some people don’t think we’re #1 is because of our schedule. And those are the same people who’d be slamming us if we had a weak schedule. So if being a national title contender makes you want to hit the door and quit donating you little puddle shark, then take off! Demand has never been higher and your money will be replaced, I don’t care how important you think you are. You’re probably not even a fan, so ha!

I’ll buy your season tickets, James, if getting talent from out-of state really bugs you that much. I say get some more speedy players from Miami/Dade Co and other S. Fla locales (you know—like Florida does). And some big old boys from Ohio and and other Midwest places. Maybe a few more from Texas (you know—like Stafford).
Many great Bulldogs have not been originally from Georgia. Who cares where they’re from if they can play and they come to UGA? GO DAWGS!!!

To James’ credit, I do wish Georgia would keep ALL of its top prospects because the state has produced some of the most sought after prospects in the country. That said, I don’t care where these players come from and if Long can convince Marlon Brown to come to UGA, my goodness how sweet would that be? The fact of having Brown and A.J. along side together for at least two years is sick.

IF moreno and stafford have a great 08 season , they will be long gone in 09!
the qb crop for 09 with the NFL draft is very weak and stafford could be first qb selected. moreno could be the first player selected in the 09 draft as well.
better enjoy them this year and hope we win a national championship in 08.

Well, congratulations again to the Dawgs. You are having another great recruiting year, just hope the Jackets get a few to keep it competitive. Do you think that the fact they you had a small number of scholarships to offer this year has helped cause the players to sign early — so they won’t get left behind when the class fills up?

Ned Burner, What the He!! ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? National Championship #5. The Dawgs have won one official National Championship according to the NCAA in 1980. Ga. Tech has won 2 outrite and shared one. You’re riding high now but as we have seen with Miami, Florida State, USC, Alabama. etc. It can change in a heartbeat. Woof all you want now, the worm will turn and your tail will once again be between your legs.

Bama will be the #1 recruiting class next year? Saban is dominating? Uh, hmmm, bama has only TWO commits, neither of which is higher than a 3 star. Had bama signed only 25 players last year (which is the number that can enroll) bama would have been around 10th last year.
By SecIsFootball
April 29, 2008 8:44 AM | Link to this
uh jess?…as a BAMA fan, I can say we wont have the #1 class next year and that is likely due to the fact that we will only be bringing in 18-20. Same goes for UGA and LSU. Both will have solid classes but #’s will prevent them from signing a #1 class as well. Unless people are mistaken in saying UGA has #’s issues. Yes….BAMA has 3 commitments now and 2 of them are unranked. Of the 2, one will likely be a 4 star and one will be a 3. We are likely to get a commitment on Saturday from Rivals 250 QB AJ McCarron. While it has been a slow start, we only have 2 fewer players at this point than we had last year and it turned out ok for us. You would be foolish to think Saban will not pull in a very good recruiting class. If you think so, i would be curious to hear why because since he was at LSU, he has pulled in top 10 classes and nothing has changed at UA.
As for rankings, I have no idea how Scout works but Rivals only counts the top 22 commitments in the class. I didnt know it but saw it posted last week on Rivals.com. Just thought I would let you know.

Stafford had to go to UGA when he realized that he could’nt get the Texas job. Also Texas requires that their QB’s be at least 6 ft. The top SEC lineman picked in this years NFL draft was from Vandy. What does all this UGA talent do after college. Become professors ?
By oops

It won’t help any. Stafford still sucks as a QB. The only hope is Moreno and he’ll either suffer a season-ending injury, or get arrested. Spurrier is drooling over the thought of another SEC win this year.

Congrats to Austin! Great pickup for the Dawgs, we definitely need to build some depth at OT.
CarolinaJacket, your thoughts go along with the prevailing thought of most. With the expected small class size, spots may not be open for long so recruits need to make up their minds quicker than normal. Of course this allows for plenty of great players who won’t have their mind made up to go to places like Tech, Clemson, Florida, Bama, Tennessee etc.
Go Dawgs!

oldgold, Stafford went to UGA because of Mark Richt. He met Richt at a qb camp at FSU when He was 13 yrs old. Stafford was a 5 star qb, rated #1 or #2 in the nation, depending on which scouting service You use, and was heavily recruited by Texas. Stafford was picked by CFN and CBSSports to be the top qb taken in next years draft if He declares early. He is 6’2” tall, a lot taller than Reggie Ball. As to where UGA’s players go after college, 35 of them are drawing paychecks in the NFL. Why don’t You try reading before posting, You will look less like a fool. I would suggest You go to Rivals.com, Scout.com, and the USC{the real one}, UGA, Bama, and UF sites to learn about 5 star players. SINCE TECH HAS NEVER SIGNED ONE!

It is simply amazing that so many GT, Ala, Fla, LSU, and other school pimps enjoy UGA’s Football “Comments”. Could that mean they have nothing as good of their own? Or could it be that they merely like to hang out with “Class”? Or, Heaven forbid, it may be that they are just freaks with mean dispositions that like to be destructive rather than constructive in any way possible? Whatever the reason, if they have nothing better to occupy their time, then I suppose we should welcome them aboard. It’s kinda like fleas on a squirrel … you just have to tolerate them.

Shane, your points are well made, but I believe that Calvin was a five star — I know he was with Scout. But it is true that Tech never loads up with 4-5 star players. The have to mainly take players who were given lower ratings by the “experts” and then try to develop them individually and collectively into a good team. Not easy, but it has worked in some situations.

This is what building a quality program is all about.Great in state and out of state players coming to Georgia year in and year out.So that you can compete for an SEC title and NC each and every year. Richt and company getting the job done. Will they win every game.Would love for them to but that is a tough one. Will they compete every game and for every player. Yes

It’s funny to see Tech harp on UGA as only having ONE national championship.
We have lots of championships from various organizations - but we only have one AP championship - it’s true.
But how many AP titles does Tech have?

Dave in tampa, oldgold isn’t stupid. He is just talking a little smack and having some fun. I don’t remember Him ever getting foul-mouthed or ugly. Just loosen up amd talk it back to Him. I remember smoking some Old Golds in My younger days, just like the Dawgs smoked His football team last year. What say We make it 8 in a row?

78Dawg….I may be mistaken, but to be considered dynasty, don’t you have to win at least 2 or more titles? UGA no anyone else has a “dynasty” going on in the SEC and with the level of competition in the league, your thinking UGA will become one is a bit of a stretch.
Also, I am guessing you think special rules should apply to UGA but they only give our one Heisman trophy each year. That said, the only guy on the UGA team I see getting a shot at that is Moreno. Stafford will have to have stats better than JP Wilson to win that award. However, many UGA fans said Tebow would never win it so I could be wrong. However, if I were to guess on the next QB to win the award in the SEC, I would put my money on Tebow to win a 2nd.

Spring is typically the best time of the year for Dawg fans. But all those hopes and desires get crushed come October.
Why would UGA recruit a tall OL when it’s QB cannot see over them?

SECisFootball, Man, with a handle like that You should be smarter! The two Heismans idea is mine, not 78Dawg’s. Who says there can be only one Heisman? Did You ask Heisman? I think not! In case You haven’t heard, HE’s DEAD! TennDawg, Memphis pipeline? I guess that’s fair, since UT has an Acapulco pipeline. They use it when driving recruits around. I always wondered how Fulmer signed all those blue chippers. BTW Dawg fans, I just read an AP story about a Man in Aus who locked His daughter in the basement for 24 yrs, and had several children with Her. Just what the world needs, more Gamecock fans! Well, at least They can use some more of those left over FEMA trailers!

Oldgold just likes to pull our chain. It is a give and take. Get used to it.
Old, I seem to recall a Quarterback named Fran Tarkenton that did okay in the NFL, just could not win the Superbowl.
The other General is posting again, not the one from whom I get my stumpwater.

Rambleon, Calvin was a great player, which is why our plan was to smother him like a blanket. He should do well this year playing on Sunday. Paul Johnson got a hole in one, wow. And I hear he did it on the dreaded windmill hole. Water on both sides.

Cuz, You have solved My delima. All We have to do is to give Stafford and Moreno some of The Gen’s best and They will SEE two Heisman Trophys! I love it when a plan comes together. Boy that other General is dumb. Why does He think We have been recruiting all these 6’5” wrs? Now I have to come up with a plan for four Outland Trophys. I had better get two more jars of that magic elixir out of the creek, this could take all night.

Cuz, The Gen needs to make hay while the sun shines. Once that “Memphis pipeline” that TennDawg was talking about opens up He could be out of business. I heard the Gen had hired some boy named Garcia out of the Carolinas to haul for Him. That is one tough old boy, He looks like Billy Ray Cyrus on steroids! That Rambleon is talking some weird stuff! Bear Bryant and Bobby Dodd rolled into one? Those guys hated each other. Talk about a split personality, Herschel just thinks He has a problem! Did i hear Rambleon say that He would slap Fran silly? The last time I heard that two drag queens were fighting over a pineapple on Bourbon Street. I wanted to stay and watch the fight but when one of Them whipped something out I got scared and ran like Hell!————————————-It was a straight razor!

Smack talk central. Guess it’ll be like this until the season starts..then it’ll get worse.
A few things I know:
Georgia, Florida, LSU, Tennessee and Auburn will all be good. One of those teams will win the SEC. Georgia’s got the overall edge on talent (Florida will have the best offense in the league, and Georgia or LSU the best defense, but Georgia will have the best combination of the two). Whether that can translate into championships with their tough schedule is another question.
The SEC Champion will play in the national title game. Write it down.
South Carolina’s an injury or two away from disaster this season. They have talent on defense, but there’s no depth, and the offense will be a creaking, sputtering disaster. If the defense takes a hit, this could be another long journey into the wilderness of frustration for the ‘Cocks.
Ole Miss will surprise some folks. They’ve got a little talent on offense for the first time since Eli left.
Tech will have a losing record and will not go to a bowl game this season. They lost 17 starters off of a mediocre 7-5 squad and are breaking in a new offense. Coach Johnson will win at Tech, but not this season.
Tommy Bowden and Clemson will choke in at least one game this season. They always do.
Tebow will not win the Heisman this year as the Gators diversify their offense. My bet? Beanie Wells, the featured back in Ohio State’s run-dominated offense. Moreno will be in the top five, but won’t win because Georgia’s offense has more weapons to use than OSU’s.
Mississippi State will beat Georgia Tech despite losing several players in the offseason. Tech may not score in that game.
The winner of OSU-Southern Cal will be the other odds-on fave to play in the national title game, besides the SEC Champ.
Georgia will beat Florida again. Why? Because Georgia will be facing the Gators’ ramshackle defense. The Gators will score some points, but not enough.
That’s all for now.

Shane, I always agree with most of what you say, yet I then find it necessary to pick a point or two with you. In fact, Bobby Dodd and Bear Bryant were good friends. That is what made the big fall out so very difficult on both of them. Dodd actually thought that Bryant would lead the movement to get Tech back into the SEC after he left. For some questionable reason, it did not happen.

uga will lose 2 games this season at the most, will go to the nc game because of being the sec champs and wax the floor with whoever lines up across from them!! They have to have the toughest schedule in the nation this year, and to go thru it with only 1 loss or maybe 2 would be a great feat, but I expect them to only lose to LSU at baton rouge, but to woop their butts in a re-match in the sec title game, thus propelling them into the title game where they will beat usc 34-26. GO DAWGS!! nuff said

Cuz, even a blind hog can find an acorn now and then, but thanks anyway. I just hope Rambleon doesn’t scare Fran too bad, I would like for Him to be there to tone down the idiots from Fox when They report on Our win in the BCSNCG. Fran did battle with Butkus, Deacon Jones, Jack Youngblood and the like, but He never met a real scary guy like Rambleon! Carolinajacket, You agree with most things I say? I thought Tech guys were smart. What happened, did You flunk out? I don’t even agree with a lot of the crap I say on here! As to the Bryant-Dodd flap, I am like Will Rogers, all I know is what I read in the papers, but from what I understand the hard feelings between Bryant and Dodd stemmed from the Saturday Evening Post “expose”. Furman Bisher helped write the article, and His close relationship with Dodd was well known. I could be wrong, but My take is that Bear thought He had been slandered, and His good friend didn’t have His back. Bear seemed to Me to be a Man of black and white, there was no in between with Him. He was loyal to His players and His friends, and he expected the same in return. He was also a hard Man, not one to forgive and forget. I don’t think He ever forgot any slight, real or imagined. Later on a Tech player was badly injured in a game with Bama, harsh words were exchanged from both programs, and the relationship was completely broken. I think Tech would have been re-admitted to the SEC over Bear’s dead body! Dodd was a great coach, and a smart Man, but I think He made a bad move when He left the SEC. Every program has ups and downs, and those checks from the conference sure help out when tough times hit! I could be 180 degrees off course on this and I would appreciate any info You have on the subject. Cuz, I just read the last line of Your post, from what the Gen has written it seems old Daisy has put on some weight lately!

Hey oops, you got one thing right. The ole ball coach will be foaming at the mouth for another SEC win, one is all he may get and it won’t be againest UGA. He’s a season or two from leaving town as a plucked chicken that he is. As for the bugs, your new coach and the jackets will be Ga’s b*** for years to come- face it you’re a nonfactor, not even worth a Ga fans time. As for you gator fans what will you do when tebow gets his but planted and probably won’t even last 3 or 4 games. To the people who wonder about Ga players in the NFL- there are a few walking around with super bowl rings now and a GA RUNNER IS ONE OF THE THREE TO RUSH FOR 2000 YDS INA SEASON SO THEY MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT FEAR THE DAWGS.

Heeldawg:
Love your post. Very balanced and logical. We can all get real giddy about what’s transpiring in Athens, but let’s not lose sight of the toughness of the SEC. AU, the Gators, TN, etc are not gonna just show up and roll over. There will be some wars.
When Stafford was signed and Tebow was getting all the hype, I wondered privately of how the head to head would go. So far, Tebow has 1 /nc ring, 1 Heisman trophy, and his head to head with Stafford as a starter- 0-1. Great stuff guys.
The loss to Carolina-a fluke-growing pains. They happen. Won’t happen this year. Spurrier can’t muster the troops to take on UGA, FL, TN, LSU,etc.
The Vols are more interesting-they’ve drawn blood and are just about as cocky as we are. New personnel, new offensive coordinator-I like our chances here.
08 is shaping up to be a fun year. See lots of G’s on the front of cars down here in Thomasville. GO DAWGS!!!

Before a South Carolina fan talks about UGA, please take a look at your season last year. How many SEC games did your team lose? Yea you beat UGA and Tenn beat UGA, but your season went to He!! after that. At least we learn from our lost.
No one knows who will win what this season, but I don’t think for one second that the DAWGS will be looking ahead. Georgia girls do know a lot about football, so please take your man-up some where else. oldgold, Maybe you need to go to google and learn about football before you post anything because you make yourself look like a REAL DUM-A@@
P-FULMER, You are calling UGA players THUGS, I think that you better go clean up your team first, before you call any team thugs, no matter what team. How many DUI does your kicker have and how many was it that got arrest for that weed, now should I keep going or would like the poster on the internet showing Fulmer for Marshall. How many times do your players get arrest and only get put off the team until fall practice. GET REAL KETTLE CALLING THE POT BLACK. And yes Tenn beat us 3 years in a row, but I guess you forgot how many times we beat you in a row, poor Casey could not beat UGA with one hand tied behind his back. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!! That’s it, please know your football before you run the mouth and women do know football. All my football friends are men and they can tell I know football. BLACK AND RED

Will you guys quit the JV football talk!!! It’s embarrassing!!! The kid love you guys have for some of these boys is akin to pedophilia!!! All College football is good for is to develop players to play pro-football; thus, it’s nothing more than glorified JV football… I’m sure none of you attended the JV football games in high school, but then again … the way some of you talk about these boys it wouldn’t surprise me.

Cracks me up, how people call the new GT offense “BS.” Has your memory failed you. 2004 when a much lesser Georgia Southern team wrapped up almost 300 rushing yards on us with the offense tech is trying to establish. Let me remind you who was on that team: David Pollack, Thomas Davis and Odell Thurman to name a few.

sturn: I do agree, but Georgia Southern had an incredible team that year as well. It will take a couple years before Tech can get a hold of this option offense. It’s not easy to learn.
Team speed and discipline will always prevail against that kind of offense. I like out chances against for a very long time.
The ASU game is the one that makes me real nervous this year. We can’t go in flat or we will be rolled. ASU will beat USC (the real one) this year if they play them. They will be strong.
The UGA-UF game is going to be one for the record books this year. It could determine who will go to the SEC and NC game.
TECH we’ll see you in Boise again.

I am with you. ASU scares the crap out of me. UF will be coming to Gainsville with a chip on their shoulder. How bout LSU at LSU? I just don’t think we can afford to let up on any teams, including Tech. Your right though I think tech has at least 3 years before they can even play with the Dawgs.
