Top Florida QB picks UGA

The plan all along for Georgia was to pass on quarterbacks in 2008 and grab two in 2009.

Today the plan worked.

Aaron Murray, the top-rated quarterback in Florida, held a press conference at Plant Senior High School in Tampa, Fla. and committed to Georgia.

He is the ninth player to commit to Georgia. He and Zach Mettenberger of Oconee County High School, are the two quarterbacks in the class.

Murray picked Georgia over Florida and UCLA. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Murray has a contrasting style from that of Mettenberger. While Mettenberger is a true drop-back passer with a big arm, Murray provides some speed with the ball and can be utilized as a runner much like Logan Gray or D.J. Shockley.

Murray rushed for more than 900 yards and threw for more than 4,000 yards as a junior and was named the state’s Mr. Football for 4A schools. He will be a participant in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl held every January in San Antonio for the top high school prospects in the country.

I do not know what Mr. Murray will ever do as a collegiate football player, but for UGA to go into Florida and take UF’s top-ranked QB, a lifelong Gator fan at that, signifies that the program is approaching a USC level.

There is quite a wave of momentum now, and playing out west this year will only raise UGA’s profile nationally. Obviously, they have to have a very good season on the field, but I feel pretty certain that they will.

Congrats to Murray! Good decision! Welcome to the Bulldog family!

Looks like CMR and Co. have picked up where they left off with the 2008 class! Wonder if this means we’ll get that Plant HS tight end, Orson Charles? We need another TE in this class, seeing as how Dwayne Allen stiffed us!

Maybe so, but why would he commit to UGA and leave the state of FLA just to play receiver when he is a QB first. Maybe him and mettenberger will battle it out. I dunno it just seems like a big leap to UGA just to not play QB.

What a coup! The ability for CMR to get commits early and often is a major advantage in preparing not only for the season, but for next years recruiting class. Murray must have taken note of CMR’s ability to get QB’s into the NFL.

Meyer wanted this kid for his “vaunted” spread.

But it looks like recruits are starting to pick up the fact that if you want to be a QB in the NFL, you better go to a school with a PRO STYLE offense that will make you into a QB, and NOT a throwing fullback. That’s why the Pryor kid chose OSU over the Michigan “system” and coach which fits his talents best. He wants to play in the NFL as a QB, not a receiver, running back, tight end, or fullback (hello, Tim Teblow).

Kids who know they have the talent for the NFL will once again gravitate towards offenses which will prepare them, not offenses in which they put up a bunch of meaningless numbers which win them a meaningless award (in a four loss season, no less) like Eric Crouch or Tim Teblow. The guys like Teblow who can’t cut it in the NFL as a QB will still go be spread QB’s, and they’ll be good at the college level. But they will never be drafted as a QB.

Smart kid.

BTW, Savage (who is not nearly the player Murray is) is already committed to Rutgers anyway Norcross Dawg.

This is a huge pickup for the Dawgs on several levels.

Hey “Wow” - umm … where does it say he’s “UF’s top-ranked QB, a lifelong Gator fan at that”? Certainly not anywhere in the article I read.

Then you went on to write that they are “approaching a USC level.” Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? Seriously, are you freakin’ kidding me? Unless you’re talking about the USC up the highway, UGA is NO WHERE NEAR USC. Not in talent. Not in recruiting ability. Not in national exposure. Outside of the “South” UGA is just another Wisconsin or Cal - a good regional team.

And finally about your thoughts on the upcoming season … don’t get your hopes up too high now. UGA is looking at 2-3 losses easy. Figure UF, Tenn, and probably one other. Face it - the Dawgs just aren’t as good as you think …

Here you go chris. thanks for asking. CMR sent 6 FSU QB’s to the NFL

**Richt’s notoriety at FSU developed over the years through an innovative offensive style and a long list of excellent quarterbacks including two Heisman Trophy winners: Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke.

Under Richt’s direction, the FSU offense had been a national leader. In this seven years as offensive coordinator, the Seminoles finished in the nation’s top five in scoring offense on five occasions, top 12 in total offense five times, and top 12 in passing offense five times. His 2000 offense finished the regular season ranked first nationally in total offense (549.0 ypg), first in passing offense (384.0 ypg), and third in scoring offense (42.4 ppg).

Richt sent six FSU quarterbacks into the NFL between 1987 and 2000. In addition to Weinke (Carolina Panthers), Washington Redskin Casey Weldon was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1991. His teammate at FSU, Brad Johnson (now Richt’s brother-in-law), was a Pro Bowl selection for Washington in 2000 and led the Tampa Bay Bucs to the Super Bowl title in 2003. Other Richt pro proteges include Danny Kanell (New York Giants), Danny McManus (Kansas City Chiefs) and Peter Tom Willis (Chicago Bears).**

Thanks Charlotte, thats an impressive list. Danny Kannel AND Casey Weldon!?
You have to be kidding me right!? IF anything that list should discourage and QB from wanting to be coached by Richt if he has any NFL aspirations. You see, the thing is FSU used to be really good, so therefore whatever QB they had would get national attention and be lucky to be drafted on the second day and eke out a non-descript 3 year career (similar to Greene and Shockly). So yeah, i guess if you want to be prepared for a life of being a scout team QB in the NFL, UGA is the place for you. Poor poor stupid bob sacamano.

HEY Fdemdawgs,

You need to quit smokin whatever your smokin if you think USC is that much better than UGA.

USC’s cheating national title runs are over without Reggie Busch and his family being treated to their lovely home

And in one of the rankings UGA finished higher than you did (shows how smart you are puffer)

And for the recruiting its pretty close and UGA usually plays a much tougher schedule than the weak PAC-10

So you should think before you post some stupid garbage that isn’t even correct to begin with, have a nice day!

I’m a big believer/follower in recruiting, I was a recruit myself, but a little too much is being made of these VERBAL committments from highschool JUNIORS. Many recruits change their committments even after their senior seasons prior to signing day. For one to change an junior year early committment isn’t even news. I’m not a Gator fan, but Murray could very easily end up at Florida or neither of the 2 schools. All it shows is who has the lead going into the fall/winter recruiting period.

Hey Z-dawg, first off you assume he was a gator fan because he lived in Florida. Second, I am pretty sure UF has had a better recruiting class every year Urban has been there. So obviously they are not more attracted to your coach. Third, Richt has thug U and criminole in his blood. I wouldn’t exactly call him a good guy. A guy that preaches unsportsmanlike behavior doesn’t go as a good guy in my book. So as a summary, urban is a better recruiter and you don’t know what you are talking about so how about you just zip it so you don’t embarrass yourself anymore. Since there is all this talk about how many NFL qb’s Richt has produced, why don’t you disgruntled, jealous, Gator fans name a QB that Meyer has produced that is worth a crap. Alex Smith? Give me a break. The fact of the matter is that Richt can pull the out-of state star recruits. He went to Texas and got Stafford, New Jersey to get Moreno, S.C to get AJ Green, Misoouri to get Aron White and Logan Gray, FL to get Carlton Thomas. What it boils down to, and listen to this FLA fans, is kids wanting to play for a man with integrity. Not some low-life, cheating scum bag like Meyer who will flat out lie to kids faces to try to lure them to Gainesville.

Niether a UGA or Gator fan.

Logic would tell a recruit that going to a school with a hesiman trophy winner whose skills may not translate to the NFL (and in turn stay all 4 years in college) that just recruited a top 5 QB (see john brantley)would not be a good idea if said recruit wanted to get any playing time. It appears to be a good pickup for UGA, but people may be gettinga little premature with DYNASTY. Win 1 NC this millenium and the talk can begin.

Im very positive they will have 2 to 4 losses year in and year out, I know they beat auburn and Arkansas but they have to play the sec schedule where the pounding is cumulative they still have mediocre conference with horrible defense

GaCHICK that was then this is now and everything on this page is about you future and what you should have done last year and what could have been if the BCS didn’t screw you over. Were you even born in 1980 when if not for Ga. Tech you would have not won a National Championship. See Tech tied Notre Dame to get you the chance for the Title. Damn those Jackets. Did you ride at UGA? Horses or frat boys?

I guess Murray wasn’t too impressed with Meyer’s bush league ESPN spring game circus. I guess Florida fans can console themselves with the fact that their football players can outrun the best of the best from the intramural flag football league. That is, of course, what wins games in the SEC.

And just to reiterate (that means to “say again” for the gator fans)what was said before, I have NEVER gone onto a Florida blog, because I could care less what they talk about. Yet we constantly have these tools chiming in on our blogs. So envious!! And you make it so obvious! If I was unfortunate enough to be gator fan, I’d be doing the same thing though. Beats the alternative of arguing over which brand of jeans Tebow looks best in on the gator blogs….If you punks don’t want to read about Georgia, hype or not, don’t come to this friggin page just to get humiliated.

A-dog-1 set me straight on what? The crappy QB’s CMR has turned out to the NFL? Yes, your are right. All CMR QB’s are great sideline walking clipboard holding check cashers, but PLAYERS NEVER NEVER NEVER.

That extra posting was just for you A-dog1. What was I set straight on? CMR great QB’s he has turned ou to the NFL? You are right all his QBs are great sideline walking clipboard carring check cashing wastes on the field. UGA had one QB worth a darn in the NFL at that was 40 years ago, Fran T. for the VIKINGS. Charlie was the best QB and he was a better Point Guard. Maybe Fat MATT Stafford can play BASEBALL at the next level.

Hey Chris, Were talkin about college not pro, and on that answer yes most of CMR’s Qb’s are excellent at the college level, i thought thats what counted here?

And I guess the crappy playin Matthew Stafford only led us to a number 2 ranking in the AP poll this year so we know he is horrible as well, you are absolutely right. What do us UGA fans know anyway?

Chris, you are so right. How could we miss that? Florida just turns out great NFL QB right after the other!! Let’s look at that list for a quick sec, k? Danny Weurffffful (awful), Rex “I can blow it for the best all around team in the NFL and figure out a way to lose”…, Oh, maybe you meant Doug Johnson, who couldn’t even start for the FALCONS, or maybe you meant the Bachelor!!! That’s it, Jesse Palmer, hall of famer for sure…..I think Chris Leak might be the break through guy you’ve been lookin for….He’ll be bachelor #2 in less than a year. End of discussion.

Colorado won the 1990 College National Championship in football. I believe the 1990 tech team got either tied or beat by a team of girls from UNC.

Slink back under your rocks tech fans - both of you.

BTW how many of you tech girls are planning on going to the tech - Jacksonville State game this year? Didn’t think so.

A-dog1 the original statement was from charolettdog that this kid picked UGA because CMR cant get QBs to the next level. So, yes his system has done that with great sucess, but at the NFL level all CMR QBs stink.

By Gator 1

Why in the world would you believe that playing quarterback at GA would prepare one for playing in the NFL? Is there a quarterback in the NFL who is a GA graduate? I don’t think so. Didn’t Green get cut by Seattle? Is Stafford NFL calibre? Are NFL scouts raving about him? Just because GA runs a Pro stlye offense doesn’t mean the QBs are developed, have the skill or decision making abilities to be successful in the NFL. Lets see sone success on the Pro level by UGA QBs before GA takes the title of QB U.

Big pick-up for Georgia. Dawg fans - to help you get even more pumped about this kid go to YouTube and type in Aaron Murray. Murray’s got all the QB tools to be a success for UGA. Great arm with amazing accuracy and he’s a Fran Tarkenton when it comes to eluding the rush.

Let’s hope Orson Charles follows Murray to Georgia!

Chris: I was there in 1980. It occurs to me that maybe the Dawgs and Notre Dame play for the championship even if GT loses to ND. Maybe the Dawgs go into the game at #2 instead of #1. For sure, the Dawgs beat both of them.

I love the pick of UGA by Murray, but if the dude is so good why doesn’t he go to UCLA and start right away. Either him or Metterberger (or both) will red shirt in 09 and back up Grey in 2010. I just hope one of them doesn’t end up like Blake Barnes or Joe Cox, cuz either one of those guys would start at a lot of places. At least the man was smart enough not to go to Teabag Country.

UGA fans are the most delusional in the entire country. They don’t even go to the SEC champ game last year and they think they are a dynasty. They haven’t won a national championship in 28 years. Yet they think they are a dynasty. UGA qb’s haven’t done anything in the nfl after running richt’s offense. Yet they think they are the best school for qb’s to go to the nfl. Hey I think I saw David Greene bagging groceries wearing a Publix apron the other day. Man he really made it. Maybe its just that UGA education.

Jared Lorenzen went last year as a back-up to Eli. Jason Campbell is pretty good from Auburn. Jay Cutler is pretty good. (We all forgot about Quincy Carter’s legendary career). Payton and Eli, are the current best by FAR. It’s a good point, but I’d say QB is the ONLY spot the SEC doesn’t load the NFL with. Check out D-lineman. It’ll be interesting to see if Jamarcus Russell, or Andre Woodson turn out to be any good…Not sure why SEC as a whole struggles turning out successful NFL QB’s….

Hey Gators, try and spin this how you want. But the facts are Newton sucks, and you know it. He is moving to TE. Brantley hasnt played a snap and has been injured since he set foot in Gainesville. Murray was your NUMBER ONE target this year and he left YOUR state for YOUR rival. You have zero depth behind Tebow and now you are going to have to go for your second choice. Also, dont forget, Logan Gray was CUM’s number one choice last year and you lost him too. Good luck spinning this, because you cant.

caterdawg Taking the best players for Florida? Give me some names.

UGA will never be as successful at recruiting Florida as UF is in recruiting GA. It is not a level playing field. UF only has to beat out UGA for top level GA talent (sorry tech fans). UGA has to beat out UF, FSU and Miami for top level FL talent.

Like a previous poster said, don’t get too excited about a verbal commit from a Jr.

UGA has some crazy talent coming in 2009. Georgia and Florida are known as talent hotbeds and UGA gets two of the best high schoolers EVER. QB Aaron Murray set the single season record for touchdown passes (51) in florida. RB Washaun Ealey set the single season rushing touchdown record in Georgia (58). These guys are record setters in two states known for producing top tier high school talent. Cant argue with the numbers. Rivals.com can rank them #5000 for all I care.
