Brookwood tackle commits to Alabama

Less than 24 hours after receiving a scholarship offer from Alabama, Brookwood offensive lineman Kellen Williams pulled the trigger on a commitment to the Crimson Tide.

“I talked to coach [Nick] Saban [Wednesday] night on the phone and he told me they were offering me a scholarship,” Williams said late Thursday. “I told him basically that I was going to talk to him again in a couple of weeks.

“But I woke up [Thursday] morning and thought ‘Alabama is the best place for me to go to school.’ So I committed this afternoon.”

Williams made sure that he broke the news to Saban.

“I called and spoke with coach Kirby Smart, who is the recruiting coach from my area,” Williams said. “He gave the phone to coach Saban.

“I just wanted to tell the head coach. I told him my recruiting is done now. I’m 100 percent with Alabama.”

Williams, who also had offers from Arkansas, Boston College, Central Florida, Florida State, N.C. State, Rutgers, UAB, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest, had always hoped for an offer from Alabama or Georgia.

“This is a big deal to me and my family,” he said. “We’re very excited.

“I just credit all of the coaching over at Brookwood, with coach Mark Crews and [offensive line] coach Tom Jones.

“I’m only as good as my coaching and my teammates. All those guys [played a role] in me going to Alabama because they worked me so hard.”

I grew up a big AL fan living in Ga. But with them getting that traitor Saban…and their AD’s stance on supporting the BCS over a playoff system….i cannot support them anymore. I refuse to support ANY school dumb enough to think you can have a succesfull season without a playoff system! Alabamas 92 team was one of the last “true” champs!

Its sad its gonna eventually take every school getting screwed over like UGA and Auburn did to change things. * Dont worry bama fans…your turn to get screwed is coming up*… then youll agree with me that the ONLY teams that should like the BCS is a team like Ohio State that plays a weak schedule!! O they LOVE the BCS at Ohio State.

I mean common a 8 or 16 team tournament….What would that prove!?? Its so much more meaningful when u type stats into a computer and take a “vote” on who plays for the title. LOL College Football…..its like a Bodybuilding competition where everyone gets on stage and poses showing off their muscles but NEVER FIGHT! ALL HYPE!!

Dont…dont believe the hype…dont dont, dont believe the hype! ;)

Any fans of old school rap know what im sayin.

I miss the old days, when the old man was coach back in the 90’s Gene Stallings….now that was a mans man, loyal to the core. A GREAT coach as well! Unlike traitor Saban.
I still root for Alabama when they play any team other than UGA or GT tho.
But Alabamas stance currently on the playoff format is just wrong. And sadly it will take them getting screwed over as well for things to change!
At this rate theres not gonna be a playoff in college football till around 2050. Theres just 2 many stubborn fans stuck in their ways to make a difference.
Thats why college football has BY FAR the WORST postseason of all sports!

Alabama was the #1 recruiting class b/c they were able to tell every single kid they recruited that they could come in and start right away. Why? Because Alabama had ZERO top notch talent in it’s starting 22, save for Andre and maybe a couple more offensive linemen.

Guess what, you are not going to get a 5-star player at a position you got a 5-star at the year before. Kids want to go to top notch schools, but above and beyond that they want to play and they want to play from day 1. More times than not, a Top 5 recruiting class is followed up by a Top 15-20 class, that’s just the nature of the beast.

But even the #1 class won’t prevent a minimum of 4 L’s in the left hand column this year for the Tide.

Think about this—-The Barners in cow town must be the only team in the country who are EXTREMELY, OVER THE TOP, jealous, envious, and lack of class about a team they own a 6 game winning streak over. Why? Because they know that NEVER in their lifetime will they see 12 National Championships, let alone 1. They have 1 TAINTED crown on probation in ‘57 and it was their head coach, Shug Jordan that got ‘em caught. Now you know the rivalry that is Alabama and that cow school down the street. No matter how many times they toot their horn bout a winning streak, Bama Nation will just look at ‘em and smile and just say 12. By the way, what comes around, goes around, we will be back to top our 9 game winning streak in the 80’s over the Barners. Bask all you want, your days are over when we hold up 1 finger this year in T Town to start the 10 game winning streak. Ooh Rah!!! The tradition rolls on.

Bama had great recruiting class….however it is going to be intresting to see which BAMA players ol SABAN lets go of because TO MANY PLAYERS AND NOT ENOUGH SHIPS TO GO AROUND…….Thats pretty disturbing if you ask me. Which one do you get rid of…the kid you recruited 2 years ago that has been on ship and gettng the education paid for and bustin hump in practice…or the recruit Bama just signed and said come play for us. I’m not putting in a cheap shot here at any Bama fans by any means….but that jsut seems kinda classless and lame to me.

Gypsy Dawg, Thanks for making it so easy to prove that Ugag fans are the most obnoxious and backwoods fans around. I’ll use your phrase, Ugag fans, can’t live with them, wouldn’t have garbage collectors without them. Ugag fans, can’t live with them, wouldn’t know what a mullet was without them. Ugag fans, can’t live with them, wouldn’t have fast food workers asking if we will have fries with our sandwich. Ugag fans, can’t live with them, wouldn’t need Hargrave without them. :-)

First of all Gypsy Dawg, you have issues you need to deal with way prior to football season. As an AU grad, I will be the first to say that we don’t need you to stand up for us, our last few years against Bama speaks volumes.

Now, back to the main topic. Kellen, I hope that you did not make your decision too quickly. All these Bammers are telling you that you are now a Bammer for life. That is the same thing they told Bill Curry, Mike Dubose, Mike Shula and the list goes on. Now there is a man over at the Capstone that has told over 200 kids(LSU, Mich State and Toledo), not to metion what he said to the Miami Dolphins players, that he will be there for the duration. He has lied to everyone of them just as he has lied to you! It is hard to give that man any respect.

The posts above mine are correct. Due to the long history that Bama has, and knowing that as a freshman there will be a good chance for bunches of minutes, the recruiting this past year was a no-brainer. You will get an opportunity to play right away. The question is, do you really want to play for a man who thinks that he is above the NCAA? He was advised about the Alan Jackson concert, but attempted to do it anyway. He has made public statement after statement about the past few years recruits at Bama. Even if they were not the normal caliber of recruit that Bama is expected to have on its roster, a true man would not publicly berate them and tell anyone that would listen that the reason he lost was the players, not the coaching. That alone would steer me away from even considering the Crimson Tide.

Kellen, the final choice is up to you. I had a chance to speak to you and you sounded like an intelligent young man. With any decision you make, I wish you the best of luck.

I briefly worked with Brookwood OLine coach Tom Jones at Lithonia in 1980. He was a great man and coach then and I’m sure he is even better now. Kellen Williams was indeed lucky to have him. Good luck at Alabama.

Kellen, good luck at ALA. It’s unfortunate you’ve gone with a coach of such low moral charactrer; but best wishes with your academic studies.

GT4EVER:

It is always amusing to have you Yech MasterBaiters come into a thread and try to stretch it to make some anti-UGA point. Yech has a lot more to worry about than UGA. I suggest obsessing more over some of the ACC teams you possibly could upset, rather than a UGA team you might beat once every fifteen years. Go back to the shower - sweet dreams.

Two thoughts 1) Everyone (at least in the south knows it’s the other way around and 2) Without fans like this you’d only have 5 people at home games and 3) Got my newspaper rolled up, so you puppies better run for cover come September and 4)THIS STORY IS ABOUT ALABAMA!

By SecIsFootball

April 18, 2008 10:20 AM | Link to this

Gypsy Dawh….How are we going to beat all of those teams you mentioned? Same way UGA is winning games. By bringing in top level talent. UGA was an average team in the 90’s and then they hired a good coach who was a good recruiter. BAMA did the same and you can trust you will begin to see the same results and hopefully it wont take BAMA 28+ years to win another national title!!!

As for losing the last 6 to AU, it sucks. However, you know the feeling with you last 18 year record against the Gators!! Sure, you can do the typical Dawg fan response and claim that you have a winning record overall against UF. But then I would just have to inform you that UA has a winning record against EVERY SEC team!!

Alabama claims national titles for the following years: 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992. Other than the first three, we’ll go over each season individually.

1925, 1926, 1930. All back-dated titles. These titles were awarded years after the fact. Four teams could claim a back-dated title in 1925, eight teams in 1926, and two in 1930. See how inconsistent back-dated titles were? Doesn’t matter. They don’t really exist. Pure and simple resume embellishment. Strike 3 titles from Bama’s record.

1934—The first year for the AP poll, given to Minnesota. Alabama received 11 selectors choosing them, but I’m sure most of them were back-dated—impossible to know for sure. Minnesota had 29 selectors, most of them probably back-dated, but they got the only one that counted—the AP. Strike another title from Bama’s record.

1941—The most belligerent of Alabama’s bogus titles. Alabama finished the season with 2 losses and ranked #20 in the final AP poll. But one of the minor selectors out of over 30 chose Alabama, and evidently, that’s the only excuse they needed. Five other teams that year would have a superior claim over Alabama’s if you counted minor selectors, but we don’t.

I’m not really sure how many years after the fact Bama raised this banner, but you can bet it was many—so that not many people might notice. Strike another title from their record—we’re on a roll—up to five, now!

1961—Ahh, the beginning of the Bear era, and the golden age of Tide football. Alabama was pretty much a consensus champion, with both of the major polls, the AP and UPI, going their way. Some minor selectors chose Texas and Ohio State, but this title is solid. Score one legitimate title!

1964— A 10-1 Alabama team claims a national title in 1964 in spite of an 11-0 Arkansas team having a better claim. Here, an instance of both the AP and UPI, which voted Alabama # 1 that year, still voting prior to the bowl game. Had the polls been conducted after the bowls, then I’m sure it would have been a consensus Arkansas pick because Alabama lost to Texas in the Orange bowl, but Arkansas beat Texas during the regular season. I honor Alabama’s title because that was the rules that were in place at the time. Chalk up another legitimate title for the Tide, although reason would probably confer it on Arkansas.

1965—The first of Alabama’s supposed two back-to-back titles. It was a split decision between the 9-1-1 Tide, who dropped the first game to Georgia and tied Tennessee, winning the AP title, and Michigan State, 10-1, dropping the Rose Bowl, winning the UPI crown—again, bestowed BEFORE the bowl games, while the AP that year was done afterwards. Two other teams, Arkansas and Dartmouth, also got a few minor selectors to choose them, but an AP title is gold, so score another legitimate title for the Tide, now up to three.

1973—Alabama goes 11-1 and is chosen by the UPI. Notre Dame goes 11-0 and is crowned by the AP as NC. Who did the Irish beat in the Sugar Bowl? Why, Alabama, for their only loss. Why in the hell did Alabama get a national championship after losing their bowl game to the real national champion? Because the UPI was still choosing their champion BEFORE the bowl games. How crazy is that? Pretty crazy, by today’s standards. If Alabama had any sense of decency, they would refuse to claim 1973 as a title year since they lost the de facto national championship game to the real champions. Only a petulant child would disagree. All reason says strike this title from the record!

1978—Split title year, AP going to Alabama, and the UPI going to USC. A funny thing happened on the way to the forum, however. Alabama LOST to USC during the regular season. But alas, USC lost a regular season game too, and the two teams did not meet in a bowl game. So be it. Chalk up title number four to Bama, even if they did share it with a team they lost to at home.

1979—Alabama was 12-0 and took all the marbles and most of the selectors. No argument here. Score number five in legitimate titles!

1992—Alabama’s only ‘modern’ day title, complete with all the 24 hour media attention afforded ‘national championship’ bowl match-ups, in this case a beat-down of Miami in the Sugar Bowl. Absolutely no doubt. Final tally to date, six legitimate national championships.

YOU’D BETTER PERFORM, otherwise SABAN will create a reason to yank your scholarship. Then, where will you be? If you go somewhere else, you lose a year of eligibility!

NICK signs more than alloted 25 annual recruits and has to subtract offers, haven’t you heard? IT’s all over the national news, and you are TOO TALENTED to get screwed by SATAN (I mean SABAN!)
