Georgia Tech QB signee arrested

Georgia Tech quarterback signee Jaybo Shaw of Flowery Branch was arrested early Sunday morning on a charge of underage drinking, a misdemeanor.

Shaw was arrested at 12:30 a.m. and released the same day on $500 bond, Hall County jail records show.

Shaw was the first player to commit to play for Paul Johnson after Tech hired Johnson as coach last December. Shaw ran for 1,500 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior after throwing for 2,700 yards and 28 touchdowns as a junior. He was No. 10 on Rivals.com’s national list of dual-threat quarterbacks, and No. 33 among prospects overall in Georgia.

Shaw and his father, Flowery Branch coach Lee Shaw, declined comment late Monday evening.

Anyone at any School, or before they get there, can get arrested for what Jaybo did. I think most people actually drink before they reach legal age. I drank a good bit while I was at UGA (all under age). You don’t have to be much of an athlete(like me) to drink, just a bit foolish.Actually discovered I didn’t like it & haven’t had anything in over 30 years.Lighten up, before you start, he didn’t rob a bank. He is just a kid.

Coach Johnson won’t tollerate this kind of crap. Hopefully Jaybo will straighten up and learn. There are too many kids willing to take his scholarship at GA Tech or just even his acceptance letter. We need to stop pampering punk atheletes. Send Jaybo to UGA or South Carolina….better yet Iraq.

so, elcid81, you never drank at that age? the drinking age is ridiculous in the first place, you can die in a war for your country but not drink beer? Jaybo is not a ‘punk athlete’ just a kid doing what every other kid does. maybe you are the one that needs to grow up or go to Ugay or Bad Carolina

The end times are upon us. One of Techs “Saints in Training” has been arrested for (gasp) underage drinking. Such a thing has never happened to any of the anointed. None of the Nerd Herd have ever broken a rule, had a drink, dealt dope, thrown a waitress through a plate glass window. Just the signing of a letter of intent to the Institute of Train Drivers automatically instills purity and goodness in any young man. Obviously this is some UGA, Bama, Auburn, or UT recruit posing as young Mr. Shaw. There is no way any Bumble Bug would ever do anything remotely like have a cold beer. Only lowlife FSU or Clemson recruits would stoop to such depths of depravity. The North Avenue Ivory Tower of all that is good and true would never recruit a mere mortal teenager. Obviously this is just another ploy by the AJC to show favoritism to those unholy heathens in Athens and the other dens of iniquity. The Nerd Herd demands a retraction from the paper and speedy cover up, oops sorry, I meant an apology to clear the immaculate name of the GIT. Always remember that only sub human cretins go to other colleges and universities, Tech recruits only choir boys, and milk drinkers. I don’t think that demon rum is even sold in Atlanta in order to preserve the saintly calculus driven academic superiority of the Trade School. But if this heinous rumor is proven to be true I demand that the offender be stripped of his scholarship, drummed out of metro Atlanta and made to serve as the quarterback of the prison team while he serves his 20 years to life sentence for acting like a mere college student and staining the reputation of Tech men everywhere, especially in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Shanghai, Karachi, and Abu Dhabi where most of the undergraduates come from.

Jaybo is probably 17 or 18 years old. We can send our kids off to Iraq and Afghanistan to fight our wars, but we can’t seem to allow them to have a beer. Does this sound strange to anyone or is it just me? The key to me is if he was arrested for DUI or rape or murder, then forget about HIM. For underage drinking? Forget about IT!

By itself not a big deal. When I was a teenager cops didn’t charge you for such things. They might take you home or give you a strong lecure but they did not arrest young people for such offenses with rare exception. Life is different now.

You are a complete moron my friend. I didnt want to be the one to put it blatently but apparently at your level of idiocracy (www.dictionary.com), things need to be explained to you. I dont know if you are over the hill and senile (which would explain your thinking), but 99% OF COLLEGE STUDENTS DRINK. About 70% (at Georgia Southern) ARE Bold: UNDERAGE. GET CAUGHT UP WITH CURRENT TIMES, MORON, it isnt like he threatened a teacher with physical harm, or maybe cheated on an exam. You want to talk about crap Paul Johnson wont take? BRING IT ON, I WAS AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN WHEN HE WAS A COACH. YOU HAVENT SEEN ST IF YOU THINK HE WONT TOLERATE JAYBO SHAW. What he doesnt tolerate is REPEATED OFFENSES. Are you a donor for the athletic department? Didnt think so, so YOU arent pampering A DAMN THING. eclid81!!!!!

What in the world is wrong with you…..Iraq????? I have a better idea, why don’t you get to know our country servicemembers, or better yet………..MOVE TO FRANCE and take the other anti-American Hillary Clinton with you!!!!

I am a Georgia native. I was recruited by many D1 schools for two sports (including football), but chose the Air Force Academy over, among others, GT.

I find your comments disturbing on multiple levels. First I think that you are ignorant and disrepectful of what it means to serve one’s country as well as totally oblivious to the need of sacrificing oneself for a greater good that may not help you personally.

Second, I think that Coach Johnson would think your comment completely out of line and if he had your choice, he would not accept your money as a booster or as a ticketholder; but would rather you never ever associate yourself with Tech ever again.

Third, I think that you need to separate your opinions about why our country’s servicemembers are in IRAQ and your opinions of our servicemembers. You might also want to look into why we may be in IRAQ. Look at the CIA deficiencies during the first cold war in respect to the WMD issue and it is completely obvious why senior members of our administration, and I might add (perhaps your choice) Sen. Hillary(ous) Clinton chose to pursue military engagement.

You my, ignorant non-friend, have also lost touch with what it means to be 17-20 years old. I don’t know of any individuals that have never had a touch of alcohol (even in public) while underage—and I might want to add that i have known many people from many faiths and upbringing and that I am approaching my 30th birthday.

You sir are out of line. I, along with many others, believe that you should do one of three things. (1) Leave the country and forfeit your citizenship; (2) Although I recognize your right to speak your mind, it might help if you were informed and until then keep your idiotic and ignorant mouth shut; or (3) apologize to the servicemembers and other real citizens of this fine country for your ignorance.

Until then you are worthless.

The fine, that’s just highway robbery for a joke of a law, like the lottery, just another way the government raises revenue for more police cars, how about worring about the drunks driving out there Hall County… geez.

Love how when a Tech signee gets arrested, it is “no big deal,” and the AJC is evil for reporting it. Further, it seems to be spun by the Techies as some sign that UGA is at fault or “only worse.” Geez…

I think this kid is like a lot of others in high school - young and stupid. I also think that 99% of all college football players are guilty of the same crime, so I really don’t care.

Hell, if he played for LSU, he would be moved up on the depth chart. Anyway, Go Dawgs!

Good grief! Give it a break! 13 others were “caught”. 30+ ran. Homeowners were also arrested. Jaybo is the best to target for news. Jaybo has wonderful parents, siblings and great extended family. He is intelligent, good looking….just an all around good guy. He has worked very hard throughout his education and is an athlete who has displayed good sportsmanship in all activities he has participated in. Society likes to try to bring down persons with the caliber of integrity such as Jaybo…….Jaybo, everyone makes choices in life. The choice you made came with tough consequences. You’re a great athlete….and known all over the country……This may have happened to you so you may help someone else in life. Hold your head up, get this behind you and you can be a stronger person. What a thug. I can’t believe he would drink under…. wait… what am I saying? I drank under age? I drank under age at Georgia Tech? Crap. Guess I’m a thug too.

I think we all go way overboard when it comes to jumping on kids for doing stupid things. I mean, a kid toting guns and selling drugs is a kid you don’t want in your program. A juco kid who had to take the SAT 6 times to get the minimum score for the NCAA isn’t a kid you want in your program. But if you say you won’t take any kids who have had a little booze in high school you won’t have any kids left in your program.

I also do not consider underage drinking a serious offense, as long as they aren’t driving of course. Its simply a miracle that I never got busted for any underage offense in college. While I don’t support underage drinking, I do think these kids need a safe environment if they choose to do so. They just need to be smart about it. I would much rather have a group of 10 teenagers at my house drinking in the basement or whatever. That way they aren’t on the road and I would be able to control who leaves and who needs rides.

Jaybo is a great kid with more character than most. His family is excellent both Mom and Dad are great people. If people on this blog had an ounce of class they would not judge the actions of this young man so harshly. Grow up act like adults so that our children can learn from us. Besides Jaybo just may be your boss in a few years. He can certainly play ball but this is also one very smart young man. Every day we are all faced with decisions some are good ones, some are not the difference is what you learn from each and every one. Jaybo is a fine young man, respected by his friends and community. Please leave this young man and his family alone. It is a hard thing when you find yourself in the media spotlight. It could be any of us.

To be serious let’s hope this is a one time incident & not a major issue for the kid. Most of us probably partook of alcohol or worse as teenagers so lets just hope the kid doesn’t have serious issues with substance abuse.
