Georgia avoids recruiting violation

With the threat of an NCAA rules violation hanging in the balance, Georgia coaches told Henry County receiver Jamal Patterson to skip Saturday’s junior day.

When Georgia coaches learned late last week that Patterson was scheduled to participate in a Georgia High School Association-sanctioned track meet and attend junior day in Athens on Mar. 22, they told the junior to delay his visit until early April.

“[Georgia defensive coordinator] coach Willie Martinez called and said a player can’t participate in an athletic activity and attend a junior day on the same day,” Patterson said. “So he wants me to be there on April 5 for the spring game.”

Patterson’s scholarship haul climbed to 32 over the weekend when offers from Middle Tennessee State and Rutgers arrived. He already had offers from powerhouses such as Alabama, Clemson, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Patterson had hoped to learn over the weekend if Georgia will jump on the bandwagon and extend an offer. Now he must wait nearly two weeks to gauge the Dogs’ interest.

“Coach Martinez did say there is some good news, but he wants me to wait and talk to [offensive coordinator] coach [Mike] Bobo and [wide receivers] coach [John] Eason at the spring game.”

Ironically, Patterson is scheduled to be in Athens on Saturday. He has been invited to participate in the Rivals 5-star combine.

April will be a busy month for Patterson. After visiting Georgia on Apr. 6, he will trek to Florida on the 12th before visiting South Carolina the following weekend.

Come on down Mr. Patterson. You can team with AJ Green and Tavarres King to form the best WR trio in the country!

DAWGS = Smart. Some how I think Urban Cryer, Field Goal Phil, or the most overpayed and overhyped coach in college football (SABAN) would not have noticed this and would have commited this violation.

That’s just one little example of why you won’t hear of any infractions by UGA. They know what they’re doing and they don’t need to cheat.

By the way, has anyone heard any more about Reggie Bush and USC. When does the NCAA get to hand down punishment(forfieted games, Heisman trophy, lost scolarships, etc.) on them? Too bad we didn’t get to kick their asses in the Rose Bowl knowing they’re a dirty program. Would’ve been sweet!

In your dreams only, P Dawg!!!! I was hoping for a UGA/USC match-up myself. You guys punished a lowly Hawaii program. At least USC punished a school from a major conference. It wouldn’t even have been close!!!!

Artie - Really? That’s what you come with? Wow. Strong. Your stupid conference wouldn’t allow UGA to play USC and we got stuck with Hawaii, who was ranked higher than Illinois and was the ONLY undefeated team. They were not weak against UW, a team from USC’s weak conference, BTW. If you come in the paint, come strong, or keep your weak stuff out.

AJC WRITER NARROWLY AVOIDS PLAGIARISM CHARGE: An AJC reporter who covers recruiting for the paper avoided charges of plagiarism by putting quotes around source material. “It seemed like I was repeating the guy’s statement verbatim, so I decided, after checking with my editor, to put quote marks around his statement,” the reporter explained. He went on to add that “we usually attribute sources when the material isn’t our original work, and by following that policy here, I just missed out on being fired for violating the paper’s plagiarism policy.” AJC editors could not be reached for comment, so they were unable to confirm whether it was the reporter’s original intent to follow the paper’s rule on accurately characterizing source material.

Hey Artie, i live in Southern California and more than a few of your fellow trojans have said since the season ended that they wanted no piece of the dawgs! Face it, USC is a great college program, one of the best, but they aren’t what they were 5 years ago. They aren’t a lock for the title game and in the years to come won’t be a lock for their conference. Just wait till neuhiesle and norm chow start putting up big points and trick plays at UCLA and you’ll see how faithful those LA fans are. USC stopped being front page news out here the moment they lost to stanford. USC will be like FSU in the ninties, top 5 program, only a couple national championships. Az state, Oregon, and UCLA will be regular contenders over the next few years, lets see how the trojans handle legit competition and an ever closing talent gap. I’m calling it… Pete Carroll bolts back to the NFL before the ship he built sinks. To hell with USC and GO DAWGS!!!

Nice headline. I bet this type of thing happens every day on every campus in America and doesn’t make the ANY page. C’mon AJC, You’re better than that. Oh, wait, no your not. I remember the headline: “Florida fan killed after Georgia Loss”? Two years ago the ajc posted this and the poor kid got killed by Jacksonville gang members and had nothing to do with the UGA/UF game. A perfect example of how the media can twist headlines to sell newspapers at any cost. Even exploit the death of a young person in hopes of selling more newspapers. AJC = National Enquirer. No integrity. Remember this during an election year my Dawg friends.

What this article doesnt say is that Patterson was going for a “private workout” (his own words)and that is where the real violation would occur.

UGA raised a few eyebrows this past January with a similar situation down in Tampa area when Bobo had a player workout for him on the school’s campus.

All the headline and article suggest is that they almost made a mistake, but they caught and corrected it. I don’t see anything so bad about that. It would have been bad if it had suggested that they had done anything wrong intentionally.

I went and watched this kid play when Tech was recruiting one of their other players and Patterson was very impressive even as a junior. Hes built a lot like Calvin Johnson and has very good hands, not to mention he should have a real QB throwing to him since coach Richt actually develops QBs. I guess for TECH’S sake I hope you dont get him but if you do I believe he will be a great player who goes on to the NFL barring any serious injuries.

The BEST Wide Receiver in Georgia in the Class of 2009 is Stephen Hill of Miller Grove High School in Lithonia. Patterson is an outstanding talent. So please don’t think that I am underestimating him, but Hill is not getting the press he deserves because Miler Grove is a 3 year old Varsity Football Program. Last year Hill caught 24 passes for 568 yards and 8 Touchdowns (facing double coverage 95% of the time). He also ran a 95 yard kickoff and a 68 yard recovered fumble for touchdowns. He is 6-4 195 lbs and runs a 4.4 in the 40. He is a starter on the Basketball Team and a standout in track. He currently holds offers from Central Florida and Mississippi State. UNC, Alabama, Georgia Tech, & Tennessee are among the schools courting Hill. Remember you saw it here first. Stephen Hill is the BEST Wide Receiver in Georgia.
