Lassiter’s Wentz commits to Stanford

A single visit to Stanford was all it took for Lassiter offensive lineman Camden Wentz to realize he’ll be calling the Cardinal’s campus his home for the next four years, beginning in 2009.

“Camden just decided to [commit] early,” Lassiter coach Greg Dirst said. “He just fell in love when went out there for junior day.

“He told me he really liked it, so he decided to pull the trigger.”

Georgia Tech was among the schools heavily recruiting the Lassiter center, who committed to Stanford earlier this week.

“Other people in the mix for Camden were Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech,” Dirst said. “All those guys were going to offer him.”

Went, a starter at Lassiter since his sophomore season, will likely play center or guard for the Cardinal.

“He’s 6-foot-4, but most of the tackles in the PAC 10 are 6-7 or 6-8,” Dirst said. “He’s got good enough feet to play tackle, but I imagine he’ll be an interior lineman.”

Stanford’s academic reputation played a major role in Wentz’s decision.

“He’s a real good student and he has a very high GPA,” Dirst said. “The academics attracted him. And he’s always wanted to play football at the next level.”

Great decision. I don’t know why these kids don’t go for the best academic school they can get into. Wentz may never play in the NFL- probably won’t- but that Stanford degree will be invaluable.

Yeah, with a high GPA you know he’s waaay too smart for the SEC (excluding Vandy … but they aren’t really right for the SEC either), and probably not the caliber athlete. Big 10 athletes are soooo much smarter than any other conference. You know they are students first, athletes second — whereas in the SEC, they are athletes. Not student/athletes, just athletes. The caliber athletes in the SEC are truly superior, but not intellectuals.

Does this have anything to do with race?

GT’s for NancyBoys,A couple of years ago, the CBS sports site posted the wonderlic scores from the combine. This provided me with more fun than you can imagine. After adding, and averaging the scores,I found that everybodys favorite whipping boy Alabama had the highest overall scores in the SEC. Then I compared them to the other non-SEC schools, and found that they were the highest in the country. all and all the SEC compared very favorablely with the alledgedly smarter kids of the supposedly brainer conferences. Let me be the first to admitt that this could scarely be considered a scientific study as it only considered the scores of NFL worthy players.Factor in the scores of the sissies and the results could easily change. Still the results would’nt seem to support your regional or racial stereotypes.

Why can’t everyone just congratulate Camden for exceeding in the classroom and the playing field and being offered an opportunity to get a full ride at a major University of his choosing? I, for one, wish him well.

Great choice with Stanford & Palo Alto. The reason Bob: mots of these kids ride unrealistic hopes of the NoFunLeague instead of preparing for college acadmia like the kid from East Cobb County. Watch and see where the kids from Dekalb & Fulton (city schools) attend. Mostly football factories. When’s the last time a kid from Douglass or SW Dekalb got a schlorship to the Ivy league or Stanford?
