UGA has major competition for Carver, Columbus LB
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Carver, Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones has already collected scholarship offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Miami and Texas.
But it’s unlikely the 6-foot-4, 215-pound junior will commit prior to the summer.
“He’s going to weigh his options after spring practice then he’ll get his options down to ten,” Carver coach Dell McGee said.
Though Alabama and Georgia are projected to have small class of 2009 recruiting classes, McGee has no plans to advise Jones to speed up the process of picking a college.
“It doesn’t put Jarvis into a pinch because it’s a college’s choice if they choose to go ahead and take all of their recruits,” he said. “But I don’t see a school not waiting on him. If they go into another direction, Jarvis will be fine with that.”
Jones, a small forward for Carver’s state playoff basketball team, visited Auburn recently.
Former Carver teammate DeRon Furr recently enrolled at Auburn and will be on the Tigers’ roster this fall. Carver’s Jarmon Fortson signed a letter of intent with Florida State last month.
But McGee doesn’t necessarily believe his former players will give Auburn or FSU the upper hand in the recruitment of Jones.
“I think he’ll make up his own mind based on which school is best suited for Jarvis Jones,” McGee said.

Best linebacker out of Georgia since Trey Blackmon…Hopes he chooses Auburn, Furr is looking good in spring practice and will weigh heavy in Auburn`s future.

If he’s smart, and UGA does offer him a scholarship, he needs to stay at home and play for a NC. Trey Blackmon should have stayed in state. For God’s sake, be proud of your home state. If UGA kept all it’s home state players, we would be top 10 every year!!!!

War Eagle, weegle weegle weegle. Tigers? Auburn is a nasty place — it is like being on a movie set, you know a prop town. If you ever went back a street, or two, in downtown Auburn you’d see what I mean. It is as if they copied Athens with a facade. Sad little town with sad little people. All those kids from Atlanta that could get admitted to UGA. To settle on the next best thing. Sad little people. Auburn, it is less than. At least the folks in Tuscaloosa don’t mind, they have a better attitude — they know they are second rate, but don’t let it get them down.
North Ave. Nancy Boys could learn from this. All you haters can get a punch on the nose from me. Perception is not really realty.

All dirt roads lead to Clemson, yep got that! North Ave is the “Home of the Nancy Boys” Rocky Top, rotten crotch. F* do indeed wear jean shorts. And yes, Smelly is the Cocks QB.

Tyler we already are top ten just about every year - 5 of 6, to be exact and we’ll be ranked top 3 going into this season. We can’t get all of the top players in Georgia and the staff always does a good job of pulling a few of the top players from other states, especially SC and NC…and we’re doing better in FL(Owens, Evans…and I think Carlton Thomas is a big-time player who’s going to surprise some people). Sometimes they find a place they like better and sometimes they go elsewhere because there’s a better chance for immediately playing time.

Hey, I wish the guy luck as I do all young men, but how long does it take to make a decision.
Most guys are gonna stay in the South. They are pretty familiar with all of the programs.
I’d love to see him at UGA, but I also want guys who want to be DAWGS.
After what happened this year with the Allen kid who went to Clemson, I wouldn’t be so sure that MR is gonna be patient. We have to know from folks and move on. We don’t have that many scholarships.
If the dude goes to Auburn, so be it.

What is all this Trey Blackmon stuff? I am glad he went to Auburn. He is a punk and has already been kicked off the team once. He is a trouble maker. Good Riddance.
As for Jarvis, have heard nothing but good things.
Go Dawgs!

A punk is suddenly not welcome at Georgia, gimme a break. If ya’ll didn’t recruit punks with SAT scores in the 700, you wouldn’t have 10 players on the team. You have more players that can’t qualify and get arrested than anyone outside of the state of Florida. Accept what you are boneheads! And try and act like men when I spank the puppies again next year. Ted, where do you live, I want to give you the chance to give me a “punch on the nose” lol.

dd, I agree. Hope he has pride in GA and decides to play for NC’s for the team his heart should be with instead of following his high school buddy wherever he goes. It’s come to Athens and possibly play for an undefeated national championship team or hang out with your buddy you’ve been hanging around with for years anyway and lose 3 or 4 games a year. Better commit to UGA early this year! Hope you make the right choice but we can definitely live w/o you.

Rennie Curran already accomplished more than Blackmon unless you include arrests and suspensions…

auburn has always recruited the columbus area well, many kids want to play close to home.on another subject, bret farve has retired.i am not a fan of many qbs,i think they get too much credit for wins and too much blame for losses.bret was different, the way he would step INTO the rush to deliver the ball and sell his body out.bret would take the hit to complete the pass.i know he would force the ball into coverage,he had so much confidence in his arm that he thought he could put the ball anywhere.imo he will still go down as one of the best ever.the man was a fOOTBALL PLAYER!

When was t he last time UGA played for a NC? 1980? He wasn’t even a glimmer in his father’s eye yet the last time UGA contended for a national title.

I know Jarvis and he is a great kid. Whatever school he chooses will get a great player. This has nothing to do with loyalty to your state. His only concern should be getting a great education and being the best player he can be. This decision only affects him and his family and they should be the ones involved in this decision. Fans really don’t care about the players well being or future. They only want the player to go to their school. I am a Gator, but if he chooses another school, I will still root for him.

I have not heard it reported whether or not any of the Tech or Georgia recruits have not yet made tier grades. Give me an update if someone knows.

LetHim Choose, I want to commend you on your post. It is really refreshing to see someone who is more concerned for the kids than a University program that most of them couldn’t play for themselves, much less attend.
My understanding is that Jarvis is an outstanding young man from a great family, and I wish him the best, no matter where he chooses to continue his education and athletics.
I second your thoughts regarding him, and I hope that he remains healthy and keeps his grades going well throughout college so he can live a happy life after athletics.

You kids, you do not know. Auburn, Clemson, or FSU. He loves Clemson. Auburn is where Furr went to play and it’s very close to home. His best friend is Jarmon Fortson….who just signed with FSU. He has visited FSU several times already.
Why would he go to UGA? You all are some blind homers…that is certain. Any of his schools are excellent choices, and one is not better than any other.

decatur dawg, you are a moron just like most of your UGA counter parts. Tray Blackman never got kicked off the team, he was suspended for half the season for under age drinking. Something all college kids do. No way does Richt suspend a player that long for something so trivial. I bet you will be wishing you had him next November when you come to the Plains.

Jarvis Jones is a very respectful young man. It should be his choice on what school he feel will offer him the best education. He should decide on the school that makes him feel comfortable. I hope he continues to be the person that he is throughout his adult life. I hope that he consult with his family on his decision and not the media or attempt to go where his friends go. The main thing is to put GOD in charge and he will not go wrong. Keep up the good work, Jarvis. Everyone should be happy on wherever he decides to attend college. God Bless.

I agree with everyone who is saying to let Jarvis choose. As long as Jarvis goes to a school where he is happy, gets the education he wants to receive, and which prepares him for life after college — whether that is the NFL or, as the commercial says, he goes pro in something other than sports — then he will have made the right choice for himself.
As much as we all love to give our plugs for our schools and — usually, it seems — tear down rivals at the same time, not every player is right for UGA, or for Auburn, or for Georgia Tech. Let the kids choose — and let them choose without calling them names if they don’t choose your school.

I am biased, but it will probably be Auburn. Auburn has a need for LB’s next year and great young players want to get early playing time. And Ted Turner…Auburn is a lot nicer than Athens. No it doesn’t have tons of bars and alcoholics being picked up in huge vans every night, but we still have fun down here. UGA is a great team…my dad is a professor there (only reason why I didn’t go there), but Auburn is a great town and school. It is on nearly every list of “top places to live,” so don’t trash it. My money is on AU at home against Ugay…we will be better next year (Troy almost beat y’all with Tony Franklin last year…def put up more a fight than we did towards the end of our game. Our offense will click, and our defense will still be top 10 so watch out). And why they come to AU is geographic…LaGrange and Columbus are close to Auburn and far away from UGA.

Ted Turner…the punch in the nose thing is the 2nd time I’ve read that from you. I responded previously, but you never said anything back…If I ever see a Ugay fan punch an AU fan because they are an AU fan(if the AU fan started it I wouldn’t care)…there will be no stopping me (I said if you saw me you wouldn’t say anything cause Im 6’4” 265 and 11% body fat…bench 515lbs). And the town of Auburn doesn’t go back a street or two, so I don’t know what you’re talking about. Anything that isn’t nice is just crappy houses that students with no money live in. Athens has those as well as every other college town (except the rich private schools like Pepperdine). Auburn is always on the “Best places to live” lists…Athens isn’t…does show up on the “towns that rock,” “party all the time” lists.

My boy decatur dawg…it is true Tray Blackmon got in trouble for being drunk. What college student doesn’t get drunk/in trouble? He didn’t get arrested, but a few weeks ago I saw Caleb King in Athens completely wasted. He was walking in the middle of the road and some frat dudes in their hick pickup truck called him the N-bomb. It was kinda tight what he did…he went up to the window and it was rolled down. He punched out a kid through the window. They then got out of the truck and he K.O.-ed another kid with 2 punches and then they ran away. But yeah…all kids do that kinda thing, so don’t say anything about Blackmon. Im sure Richt would be glad to take him if he wanted to transfer. I could get y’all pictures of UGA and Auburn football players smoking weed too. Basically, players on both teams are just as bad.

Its funny reading this blog. None of us know what’s going to happen in November. I am quite sure all of the Auburn fans knew that they were going to beat UGA in March of 2007. So, kill all of talk about who’s doing what.
I do think that Jarvis will end up at Auburn. It’s closer to home and his family should be able to make the trip in 45 minutes or less. I think he will get a great education at Auburn or anyway that he decides to go to school. It’s really about the efforts the kids put toward getting an education.
Do I want him to enroll at UGA? Heck yes! I love UGA and want them to win a championship every year. If not a championship, at least beat the heck out of Florida every year…..talk about wanting to beat somebody badly.
Most of us blogging love SEC Football! So to heck with the rest cause we are the BEST!
By the way, I cheer for Auburn also. I am from that part of Georgia wear you hear “War Eagle” a whole lot.

Jarvis Jones is the real deal. I saw him play against Glenn Hills in the AAA basketball championship game. He could easily go D-1 in basketball.
