Tucker’s Calhoun commits to LSU
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Recent junior day visits to Alabama, Florida, Georgia and LSU proved to be all Tucker running back Drayton Calhoun needed to see to determine where he will play college football.
“I committed to LSU Tuesday night,” Calhoun said late Wednesday. “I just liked the facilities, the coaches, the players and the location.”
Calhoun toured the LSU campus on Saturday.
“When I got there, we walked around and I saw the facilities,” he said. “We watched film, went to the indoor weight room, locker room and meeting rooms.
“Then we went over to the stadium and the academic center. After that, we went to the basketball game.”
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Calhoun, who is being recruited as an athlete, said Georgia was near the top of his recruiting list.
“Georgia had a very good chance,” he said. “But LSU’s facilities are much better. And I was trying to get away from home a little bit.”
Calhoun plans to enroll at LSU in January.
“I think it’s a great opportunity,” Tucker coach Franklin Stephens said. “I think he’s going to go to college and do well.
“He had several ACC and SEC offers. He couldn’t have gone wrong with any of them.”

Good choice Drayton. Wise to pick a team that gets 3, count them 3, times to be the number 1 team in the country.

Drayton must have seen the girls, tasted the food, walked on sacred ground-Tiger Stadium and seen two NC trophies in the athletic building. His decision is not surprising at all. This guy’s just got good taste—-Geaux Tigers

the AJC needs to stop acting like UGA loses out to such graet players everytime someone commits to another school. With such a small class for next year we can ill afford to sign multiple players at each skill position. We have our running back committed for 2009, and I dare say he is the one we and everyone else wanted most. We are extremely pleases with those who commit to us. Those players who commit elsewhere do not want to be at UGA and that is fine. We wish them the best of luck , but if they are not a Dawg at heart thyen they should be elsewhere. We will get our share of great players, but like every other school we can not get everyone. There is not always a place for each player at UGA and sometimes the kids would like to further the impression that they are wanted by schools that may in fact not be pursuing them. So please AJC get a perspective on this whole recruiting game.

Clayton couldn’t carry the UGA running backs jock strap… maybe he could play DB? He saw what was in front of him and ran out of fingers while he was counting. At least he has common sense. As far as facilities go - UGA IS the BEST but he needed an EXCUSE to back out!!!

Hey 5th STRING, ever been inside LSU’s facilities? Ever been inside UGA’s, for that matter? LSU has probably the best overall athletic facility in the country, and it’s not even close between the two. Stop being such a homer and congratulate the kid on making a solid choice for his career. I’m a Tucker grad and a Florida grad, and I’m just as disappointed as you obviously are that he didn’t choose us too, but no need to get petty and hurl insults at a kid who could flatten you if you said that nonsense to his face.

Who can blame the kid? Georgia hasn’t won a National Championship in this young man’s lifetime, while LSU has won 2 since he started playing Junior High ball.
And UGA being the better programs??? How many National Championships has UGA won in the past 20 years? The last 10? Last 5? And don’t come talking about SEC Championships, you guys would gladly give up all the SEC Championships for a real CHAMPIONSHIP in a heartbeat.
Maybe one day some of you UGA fans will come back to reality and realize that while your program is elite, it’s no where near the “best”.

Come on dawg people. The kid said the facilities are better at LSU. Guess what, he’s right. I have been all up in both of the facilities from shower rooms to the coaches offices. Not even close. For that matter, who can criticize a young man for making a decision based on track record. Georgia’s perch on the top of the pile ended when Herschel hired an agent and departed. LSU has two national championships this decade. I’m not a rocket scientist, however my brother is, he says there is a 80% chance he made the right decision. Funny as it may be the only relevant number concerning 80 anything for UGA is 1980. The last national championship for Georgia…..28 years ago. That was back in the day when a red firebird and a sack O money on a bridge in Wrightsville would get you a national championship.

Yeah, I’m sure you’ve been in everyone’s facilities. They let us all in…
Perhaps the man’s decision had a bit more to do with the fact that we are stacked at RB. Is what it is and I’m sure UGA will get by without him. They may struggle but I think they’ll pull through.

By SickandTired

So JB, the decision has to be based on the fact that the young man is afraid of competition, or that he’s a loser, or that they paid him to come there, or that georgia really, really, didn’t want him, or that Miles (this is when you can insert Urban Meyer, Fulmer, Saban or just any old coach will do) is a liar and a cheat and the devil himself while Georgia has a coach as pure as the driven snow. And, if that’s the case, and all these schools are lying and paying and cheating, tell me how does Georgia even compete when it comes to recruiting. If you are really honest with yourself and take a look at it, the answer is obvious, Georgia does it too and in a lot of cases does it better. But that would require facing up to some realities that the basic Georgia fan doesn’t have the brain cells to conjure up.

This is Les Miles. I am the head football coach at LSU. I have been reading the Constipation-Urinal’s UGA coverage and these threads for some time now, and based on the size your egos and imaginations, have come to the realization that any attempt to win a football game against your squad is futile, due to their imagined invincibility. We are going to forfeit our Oct 25 game against you. I am appealing to the other SEC coaches to do the wise thing and forfeit their games against UGA as well. Should we happen to win our division again, we will, of course, forfeit the SEC Championship as well. I sincerely hope that this will stop all of the hand-wringing and whining that goes on among the UGA fan base. Maybe Marie will begin to understand that just because her team didn’t win their division, much less their conference, there is some conspiracy theory in a parallel universive where a player can “lobby” their coach to “get to NC” and it would have some effect. Perhaps in her world, Mike Adams’ pathetic, pitiful, pandering call for a playoff after last season doesn’t appear as if it’s sour grapes from a long time playoff opponent. Perhaps if the “Dawg Nation” is given the NC trophy that they feel that they diserve, despite being on the wrong end of one of S Carolina’s 3 SEC victories, they will finally get some cheese to go with their whine. If all of UGA’s fantasies and fairy tales don’t materialize, however, you can at least make lemonade from your lemons by gathering around Lake Lanier and refilling it with your tears. Have a GREAT day.

You know what? I don’t care what Les Miles’ office looks like. I don’t care what LSU’s facilities look like. I don’t even care that this kid is going to LSU. We can’t sign 30 players this year and we already have a top RB committed.

Typical AJC. UGA is signing ONE (1) UNO running back next year. He committed a few weeks back. The spot was filled and that is that. He had to make some kind of comment and he chose to say the facilities were better and he wants to be away from home. Fine. The next recruit will say how great UGA’s dorms and weight rooms are. Its all in the eyes of the beholder. Besides, the last class has Carlton Thomas so we already have our small, quick back on campus. See you in Baton Rouge.

Sorry Doc, LSU has no more REAL championships than UGA or any other SEC school has. The BCS is a popularity poll and the champion is settyled via a vote and not on the field. The officially recognized national champion of division 1 football is Appalachian State.
So instead of ripping UGA fans perhaps you should study the rules a little more…

All this talk of LSU national championships made me think of all the lucky breaks that LSU had to recieve to get the truly mythical one this year. The luckiest break of all, not playing the hotter UGA team i nthe SEC title game. As I’ve heard many Tigers say themselves. “We are very lucky to not get UGA in that game”. Yeah, LSU is on a great run thanks to what Nick Saban got going. But do not use your recent run of success to slight the Dawgs. If I remember correctly, just 10 years ago you guys were the perennial cellar dweller of the SEC West. Oh, and we did beat you pretty good in 2004 and 2005.

UGA doesn’t get every player or even the very best players all the time. The last time they did, they won a NC. But that was 1980 folks! To all the sour grapes Dawg fans who now say UGA did not want him, he had offers from most SEC schools including UGA, and he picked the school that was best for him. Do not begrudge him doing what’s in his own best interest, it makes you look like petty, bitter whiners. Oh wait, you are all petty, bitter whiners. There is a growing list of players who Les Miles has come in and cherry picked right out from under your noses. Get used to it, Drayton won’t be the last.

He was not being recruited as a RB! He will likely be a DB at LSU as he surely would have been at UGA, since you lose some this year and he is rated the top CB in Ga. this year. LSU has already gotten a commitment from a 5* running back in the ‘09 class (Ford). Besides LSU’s offer, Calhoun has offers from Florida and Alabama among others. If UGA does not want him, that’s UGA’s problem: three coaches who have won National Championships want him, but the Georgia coaching staff and the whining Dawg Nation surely know better. But at least get his collegiate position right—DB, NOT RB.
About facilities: LSU’s mascot has better facilities than UGA. If you suffer the misapprehension that UGA is LSU’s equal in this regard, it means you have never seen LSU’s. It is second to none and ever improving.
As for last year’s National Championship, UGA did not earn a ticket to Atlanta and did not defeat 5 Final AP top 15 teams. No one else did either. So make all the claims you want, they are foolish. The process UGA agreed to crowned LSU National Champions when the Tigers defeated tOSU in the NC game. If you do not want to abide by your word, do not give it. But do not cheapen The Championship with irrelevant coulda woulda shouldas that are groundless delusions.

Guys! Guys! Guys! Chill!!!! Between LSU & UGA, the SEC will keep most of the great football players in the USA. LSU does have two (02) crystal balls in their trophy case. As an LSU fan, however, my crystal ball indicates that UGA might get one in theirs pretty soon. Save the machismo for game time - and Ohio State. UGA just might get to follow in the footsteps of UF & LSU. I would think they’d be glad for the chance - and it WILL take a bit of CHANCE even for them to get to do so. Use the offseason to take an anger management course.

All those beatings UGA has taken from the Gators have left the Bulldog Nation with the severest inferiority complex in the SEC. This year’s win over Florida did little more than make the general public aware of this problem. If Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, South Carolina, and Tennessee fans would lighten up a bit, perhaps the Bulldog Nation could begin to recover and re-enter reality and even decide for themselves what to wear to games next year.

That would make it fair. Right ? I mean after all we’re talking about UGA-heaven on earth, the school that has no other sports, CMR, hedges, etc.

This is our daily example of why UGA is despised throughout the southeast. They probably have good kids. CMR is probably a really good guy. But their “fans” always blow it for them. Tomorrow there will be another example. Some fatmouth will again show why this team gets no respect. Like Momma said: “You can’t buy class.”

Even without a college education Calhoun appears to easily be one of the smartest people in Georgia. Excellent choice picking LSU.
The rest of you clowns are too busy being BCS victims to learn the important lessons LSU can teach you about becoming National Champions. Mainly, you don’t cry your way there.
Last year you whined like a jet airplane at takeoff, next year you will crumble and fold under expectations. typical - very typical - UGA.

I don’t have time to read all these retarded comments, but a few thoughts on some: - Dale, no way in hell LSU has better girls than UGA. Not even close. LSU girls are nothing but swamp trash. - LSU may have some recent championships, but they are the team of the past in this conference. We all know it’s about UGA and UF for the next 3 years at least. And those championships are questionable at best, especially the last one. You can’t have 2 losses and be national champion. No one was national champion in 2007/2008.

GUYS….. 1. This guy is projected as a DB not a RB.
LSU is better than us right now. And their facilities are better.
National image is that we always fall short (which we have done) of the big game. Till we knock them off and win in Tiger Stadium and win a national championship they will be better than us.
Let’s just face the cold hard facts.

Yea Morse, the team who won the most RECENT national title is the team of the past?
Right. Keep thinking that, and LSU will keep taking your best athletes and actually WINNING championships, not just crying about them.
LOL at “nobody” being the champion in 07. We have a crystal football that says otherwise.

The young man is right in the fact LSU certainly has the most impressive facilities in the SEC, from practice facilities to the Academic center. He should also note that LSU has verbals from two so called five star RB’s who are bigger and faster than he is.Maybe he will be a receiver, or DB, but I wish you well and you will be with a team who knows how to get to the BCS championship. tjs

We don’t need an indoor facility at UGA. You play in rain sometimes so you practice in rain sometimes. The University does have academic, monetary and environemntal needs to address ahead of football. If he likes LSU then good for him. Coach Richt does an excellent job with the recruits we get and apparently LSU does too. Everybody stop all the hoopla.

Good grief some of you UGA fans are really pathetic. A kid from you backyard chooses to go to school elsewhere and you tear him down by saying he wasn’t good enough to make your team, can’t get in UGA, got paid off, etc.
Then on top of that sad display, you whine about mythical championships but point to some pre-pre-pre-season raking that has you as the best team in the nation. Which is more mythical-two crystal footballs or Dennis Dodd saying you MAY be the best team going into next season.
What a pathetic lot.

Gus I agree that supposed grown men shouldn’t be tearing down these high schoolers. As a DAWG fan I don’t want players unless they want to come to Athens. I wish the others good luck.

Wow, the sour grapes being squished here is fitting for a big bitter bottle of “whine”. That will go well with the cheesey red pickups with the G stickers all over them on the way back to Athens after LSU reigns in Red Stick (aka Baton Rouge). Go Tigers… LSU!

Again Tigahs, Perhaps they don’t teach you how basic computer skills in Louisianna but you only need to hit the send button once. As far as whining I guess you guys would know after all the whinning that Les MIles pulled. “We only lost two games and they were both in triple overtime, pleeaaaase give us a chance in the title game!” As for the kid I hope he has a great career whether he sticks with LSU or decommits and goes to Oregon State.

LSU 7171, Great points and I agree with what you say. But you had to give a dig so now I’m going to give a dig back. So many poster on here are going on about UGA whinning. Now, that is ironic coming from a school whose coach had to plead the “We only lost two times and they were both in triple overtime” line to ESPN long enough to where they bought into it and began influencing voters with this logic. Les Miles whinned to get his team into the game. I’m not saying that it was wrong of him to do that. Probably was the right thing to do. Butfor LSU =fans to come on here and claim that we are whinning when we truly beleive that at the end of the season we were the hottest team is a little arrogant. You got the hardware and we hada weak first half to the season. But you all have to admit, you got very lucky to draw Tennessee than UGA. Given one break with a Tennessee late season loss to Vandy or Kentucky and we know that we would have earned that shot at you guys and with a victory at Ohio State for the title. It’s just common sense. We hate that our poor early season effort blew it for us. but that is the way it goes. Now, good luck to this young man regardless of where he plays. One thing for sure, he is a product of Georgia and there is nothing more to be proud of.

Maybe Marie will begin to understand that just because her team didn’t win their division, much less their conference, there is some conspiracy theory in a parallel universe where a player can “lobby” their coach to “get to NC” and it would have some effect. Perhaps in her world, Mike Adams’ pathetic, pitiful, pandering call for a playoff after last season doesn’t appear as if it’s sour grapes from a long time playoff opponent. Perhaps if the “Dawg Nation” is given the NC trophy that they feel that they deserve, despite being on the wrong end of one of S Carolina’s three SEC victories, they will finally get some cheese to go with their whine. If all of UGA’s fantasies and fairy tales don’t materialize, however, you can at least make lemonade from your lemons by gathering around Lake Lanier and refilling it with your tears. Have a GREAT day.
