Will it be football or baseball for Lars Tate’s son?

It remains to be seen if Georgia will have the upper hand in the recruitment of Cartersville junior quarterback/free safety Donavan Tate.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Tate, the son of former Bulldog running back Lars Tate, has scholarship offers from football powers such as Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Michigan, Southern Cal and Texas.

But Tate is also a highly-regarded outfielder, who will likely be a high draft choice in the major league baseball draft in June 2009.

If Tate does play college football, Cartersville coach Frank Barden believes his prized athlete isn’t close to choosing a school.

“I really don’t think he’s leaning toward one place,” Barden said Monday evening. “He’s just gathering all of his information.

“It will be a situation where he’ll sign something next February and whatever happens in June [2009] will dictate whether he plays football. That’s where he is as far as his recruiting.”

Tate’s baseball commitment at Cartersville has prevented him from attending many of the recent junior days conducted by college coaches.

“Donavan is a very talented young man,” Barden said. “He runs a 4.4 [in the 40] and benches over 300 [pounds].

“I know the kid loves playing both sports and is thrilled to have this opportunity before him. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds for him.”

His Daddy was a bulldawg and I’m sure that is going to tip the scales towards UGA. UGA will also let him play 2 sports without making it an issue. This one is certainly going to be fun to watch.

Lars Tate was a heckuva Bulldog. His son will be an excellent Jacket. Go Tech!

I know that the Georgia coaching staff is excellent and would let Donovan know that he is his own man, not just the son of a former Bulldog. And he WOULD be an asset to both the football and baseball program.

That said… look at Peyton Manning. Tennessee did a good job of convincing him that he should not go to his father’s school. Georgia is certainly a much better football school than Mississippi, but you never know what will (or who) will have the most influence on a young man. Donovan - GO DAWGS!

Hey “don’t do it”, did you notice that Tech wasn’t even mentioned in the article? Yet somehow the “winner envy” that keeps popping up in Techies comes through again. Tech won’t even offer the kid because they know they would never have a shot a kid with offers from places like Georgia, Southern Cal, Michigan, Texas, and, yes, even Bama and Auburn. Being a “wannabe[e]” is so unbecoming!

Tate wants no part of Athens, but nor does he want Tech or any of the other schools listed. This kid will be scooped up by Scott Boras and given a ridiculous signing bonus for whoever drafts him in the MLB draft.

Leg Humper, I’ve seen Lars Tate, and his body looked like it was carved out of rock. I’d like for your fat or skinny a$$ to tell him he wasn’t s**.

Unfortunately, his dad has very little to do with him. He does not live with his dad and apparently his dad has some issues. His dad MAY be the reason he DOESN’T come to Georgia. Donovan has become a very good young man, so good luck to him wherever he chooses.

I’ve seen him in person,he’s no Lyle Allen….yet, but he has all the skills of an excellent QB just needs to learn the position more. He is also an excellent safety, receiver or running back, you could line him up anywhere and he’ll make plays. Whatever he chooses, he’ll succeed.

He’s also going to miss 6 weeks of High School baseball this season due to an injury.

Even with his injury, Tate is probably one of the top ten players in baseball in the state of GA … as a Junior. In addition, the AJC reported a few weeks back that he was one of maybe ten players that GA would recruit this year. That tells me that he will be a member of the Super 11 in football this fall. This kid is a tremendous talent; and wherever he goes; he will succeed … whether its baseball or football. I hope he ends up in Pasadena, playing both sports for the USC Trojans.

Bob: Peyton did not go to Ole Miss because of his older brother Cooper not being able to play anymore due to stenosis. In his book “Manning” by John Underwood, Peyton said that Cooper not being able to play took the shine off of Ole Miss.
Tate should stick with baseball. More money potential.

Leave the GT venters alone especially when their vent is pretty accurate. Lars Tate did have a good career at UGA and we dawgies can’t have everybody.

If Donovan is the child that I remember: His mom was a former cheerleader that LT got pregnant and bailed on. She sought assistance through DFACS while LT was in the NFL earning a big paycheck.
