Tucker’s Calhoun to visit LSU

Fresh off junior day visits to Alabama, Florida and Georgia, Tucker running back/athlete Drayton Calhoun travels to Baton Rouge this weekend to visit LSU.

“I’m really just trying to go out there and see what it’s like,” said Calhoun, who is being recruited primarily as a defensive back. “It’ll be a good experience.”

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound junior has scholarship offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi State, N.C. State, Stanford and Vanderbilt.

Calhoun is focusing his attention on six programs.

“Right now, my top five are LSU, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Auburn,” he said. “And you can add Clemson to that list.”

Calhoun said he will commit in early May or late June. He is fully aware that two of his favorites will have small recruiting classes in 2009, including Georgia which will sign only 13 or 14 players next February.

“That concerns me,” Calhoun said. “But I’m just still not really trying to push it. If Georgia really wants me, they should have a spot there for me. But it does concern me.

“The only other school that I heard will have a small class is Alabama.”

Another Fitzgerald Park,,,,Tucker Football League (youth program} product. Jeff Hood/Todd Holcombe should really look into a great program here in metro Atlanta. Also, both Roddy Jones and Darious Jones played their youth ball there. Look for Roddy to go off in the new offensive scheme at Tech this fall.

As for Drayton,, I hope you can talk to Jonathon about gaoing to UGA. Jonathon Davis is the BEST baller in the state !!! Why no press on J. Davis yet ?? Hey Drayton,,, HIT THE WEIGHTS !!!! Like Thomas Brown !!!! and run them hills !!! Good luck with your senior year. And please help UGA get Jonathon Davis.

Yes, I’ve heard some good thing about Tucker’s youth football program. Word is they have kids that end up playing high school ball all over the metro area. A great compliment to the program.

Drayton, there’s no place like home… tell LSU thanks, but NO THANKS! GO DAWGS!

While I would love for Drayton to go to my alma mater (UGA), any school that gets this young man will not only be getting a good athlete, but an even better person! He has already qualified (gpa & test scores) and has been cleared to graduate in Dec. in order to enroll in Jan. ‘09. Drayton is a very humble and mature young man. I say evaluate your options carefully and continue to make us proud! WE ARE TUCKER

Son,

Understand that UGA has already told you that they want you and have a slot for you by offering you a scholarship.

Also understand that there are dozens of players out there with as much talent and potential as you, so the spot may not be there in june. UGA only has 13 spots to fill. Drop the attitiude and make a good decission.

Patrick Pass (UGA), Thomas Brown (UGA), Inky Johnson (UT), Asher Allen (UGA), Roddy Jones (GT), Nick Claytor (GT), Jamorris Slaughter (ND), Trey Buice (Kent St), Neiko Lipscomb (AU) and Drayton Calhoun (???) are just SOME of the quality athletes and quality young men to play their youth football at Fitzgerald Field in Tucker (home of the Tucker Lions). TFL is the PREMIER youth sports program in the metro area, bar none!!! This year, 5 former TFLers signed letters of intent, with more to follow. CONGRATS, DRAYTON!!! Way to keep up the tradition! Keep up the good work, coaches…our kids need us, and our job continues!!

To epb… obviously you don’t know Drayton because having an attitude has NEVER been associated with this young man. I’m sure he was trying to convey that when the time comes for him to make his decision, a spot should be there if not, I’m sure he won’t be hurting for other options!

I hear Notre Dame & Cal are beginning to pick up the pace for him. I say don’t be pressured and if you need to wait until June and UGA is no longer an option, then so be it… however, I hope they still have a spot because it’s been a couple of years since we got one from Tucker (Asher)!! Congrats & stay humble! Hunker Down!

Hey “pr”… What years did you play for the Atlanta Colts? It’s been nearly a decade since any Atlanta Colts team beat a Tucker Lions team. The Colts have a fine program, but…

I wonder how many of these kids live in the Tucker Zoning area to play there. With no M to M, I guess their recruitment just gets ignored. It is not that hard to win where you have an allstar team playing for your high school. I understand that parks and rec don’t have rules, but the ghsa does for the high schools.

So what tucker recruits.Baseball has HGH is that what makes the kids successful. The kids are talented and people help them dhape their careers in sports and show them the way academically. If their parents dont let them get help play for pay TFL Shoes, food grades equals productive citizens sometimes.

Tucker doesn’t recruit like many other schools do. Most of our kids live in the Tucker area and the ones that come from other schools are there because the schools can’t pass AYP. No child left behind means that kids can choose a school within certain districts if the school board can’t fix there home school.

We offer a great school (except for the building falling down), a great education (for those who want it) and a fantastic community that supports the school.

As for TFL, we had kids come from all over that have made a difference both at Tucker and at many other schools in the State. It’s a tradition that those of us have been involved with are proud to support no matter where the kids go to school. :)

tucker isn’t on the list for NCLB, only high schools that are listed per Dekalb are the online school and tech school. TFL feeds directly into Tucker high so long as you have the skillset, no matter where you live in the Dekalb, Atlanta, etc.

Tucker was a receiving school up until 2 years ago. We went and appealed that after we received so many kids from Clarkston that it caused overcrowding for the kids that live in the district. Some classes lost their advanced status because of too many kids in the classroom. TFL has had kids represented in every school in Dekalb County at some point. Raymond Sanders is a standout at Stephenson and lives in Clarkston. Roddy Jones lived in Lithonia and went to Chamblee; which means that if kids want to go somewhere they will find a way. TFL had standouts at MLK, Marist, St. Pius, Lakeside, GAC, Parkview, Brookwood, etc.

At Tucker, if you came from a feeder school you graduated up into the high school. If you were new to the school, ALL of your creditials were checked and turned away if it didn’t meet Dekalb County rules. We don’t have the room to accommodate individuals who want to be there for sports only….last time time we checked school was for an education. It is hard to educate someone in an overcrowded classroom where discipline and lack of interest can be a problem. The overcrowding from NCLB caused us not to make AYP because of shifting failing kids around a failing system.

Dray, First and foremost, GOD has blessed you with your talents -use and choose wisely! Secondly, I am so proud of you! You have shown great judgement, sportsmanship and dedication to your talent and to Tucker High School and that goes a long way baby! It doesn’t matter if you choose LSU, UGA, Southern Cal,or the University of Florida, I will be right there cheering you on, because I know that GREAT things are in store for you. YOU choose wisely -accept only the BEST offer!

Tucker Mom……. Please wake up and smell the coffee! Nobody is going to believe that you do not recruit kids for sports. You are not the only program, just check in on the Buford program. I personally have no problem with kids going to school where they feel better equipped athletically, but please don’t give me this holier that thou attitude. The bottom line is sports not academics.

Take it easy ” Hmmmmm”, take a deep breath and just accept that Tucker is the truth !!! TFL @ Fitzgerald has taught sound fundementals for 30yrs,, and in the last 10-12yrs has DOMINATED all competition local and afar. TFL has kids that end up in several different shools in Dekalb, Gwntt, and even Walton. As for the highschool,,, they don’t need to recuit. But many PARENTS move into the area because success breeds success !! Stop the hatin’ already and get with the program !! They win because they OUT_WORK the competition. And they have the discipline and fundementals to execute that which is coached !! Getcha sum !!!!
