Lassiter junior tight end visits Georgia Tech

Lassiter junior Philip Lutzenkirchen is on target to become one of the state’s most heavily-recruited tight ends.

He has already been contacted by programs such as Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, Mississippi State, Stanford, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

Lutzenkirchen, who attended football games at Clemson, Georgia and Vanderbilt last fall, enjoyed a recent visit to Georgia Tech.

“I went to Tech this past Saturday for junior day,” Lutzenkirchen said. “We got there around 9:30 to 10 a.m. I got to meet all the coaches, including coach Paul Johnson, and the position coaches.

“We went over the scheme we’d do and how I fit in with their program. We went over academics and what it takes to be at Tech. They showed us the dorms, facilities, the weight room and locker room. We also got to attend the basketball game against Maryland.”

Lutzenkirchen came away with a good impression of Johnson.

“I really like him,” Lutzenkirchen said. “He’s a good guy. He’s easy to talk to. I sat next to him during the whole basketball game.”

Lutzenkirchen’s stock began to soar last month after the 6-foot-4, 232-pounder managed to post a 4.73 second effort in the 40-yard dash in a combine hosted by Scout.com.

“I think I’ve proved that I have pretty good agility, speed and overall quickness for my size,” he said.

Lutzenkirchen’s next visits will be junior days at Clemson and Vanderbilt.

“Coaches from Georgia Tech, Stanford, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech have come to my school and said they’re real interested in me,” he said. “They each said I’ll probably get a [scholarship] offer in the spring.

“Right now, I really don’t have a number one, but I really liked my visit to Tech. And Clemson was pretty neat too. But I don’t have any favorites.”

Jeff why didn’t you ask him what position Tech wants him to play? They don’t use TE’s.

What does it matter which “position” the kid will play? He clearly stated that:

“We went over the scheme we’d do and how I fit in with their program”

Don’t get so caught up in the name of a position. Perhaps CPJ sees a new wrinkle that a 6-4, 232 pounder with good hands and athleticism can bring. Perhaps he envisions a position switch. Perhaps it’s something else. Whatever was discussed, this young man who plays a position we’re told isn’t in the Tech playbook, still sounds interested.

In the end, this is simply an example of how CPJ will utilize available talent. He is a smart football coach and from his close to this recruiting season and start to ‘09 is an excellent recruiter.

The guy is big, fast and agile. Any coach as smart as Paul Johnson will be able to find a good home for this kid on their football team.

callegefan: At 6’4” 232, I think he will find a fit in the scheme, which is exactly what the kid said. Just because you weren’t privy to the discusion doesn’t mean there is no fit. Or is it your goal to dissuade the kid ? He’s probably not a blog reader anyway. Run back to your kennel and lick yourself.

It will be all over when he visits the COOTS! I understand that he will be invited to visit and follow Coach Superior at Augusta National in the near future.

Most athletic T.E.’s I have seen can play DE, LB, or DL with some added bulk. I’ve seen Navy use a TE, and I believe a short-split TE, which adds another dimension to the passing game. It is correct that the Georgia Southern of old seldom used a TE. After watching the Navy offense, it looks like CPJ has tweaked this offense and added several new dimensions he didn’t use at GS. CPJ is going to do what produces yards and points. Period. For those less informed, this isn’t your Grandpa’s option game. Many reference the Pepper days at Tech and compare CPJ to that. You’ll see how far off base you are when this system is installed. My main concern is the defense. The offense is going to produce. Tech is going to have to get a lot better with pass coverage to get past the mediocrity. We lived and died by the blitz under Tenuto and prayed our corners could cover. More often than not, they didn’t. That, coupled with very inconsistent QB play is what has kept GT from getting over the hump for years. CPJ realizes that more than anybody.

i like the guys who listen to the coaches re where they want to play. we will be much better off with team players not ME players like our bb team had last year.

i am also a huge buckeye fan and while i do hope we get this kid terrelle pryor he does not come across as a team player to me.

i prefer the kids who recruit and sign with no fanfare.

I hope all of Georgia Tech opponents believe that Paul Johnson will not throw the ball. Then he can get a quick six.

A run oriented attack will only work when there is a credible passing threat. PJ is not going to line up in Frank Howard’s Clemson full house T formation and run straight at people. If his attack is so easy to defend why has he been so successful?

A TE fits perfectly into this system. If you play him in a normal TE position, with a wing/slot flanked just behind and outside of him you don’t lose any of your option choices but it gives the defense a different look and provides for better running inside. Hence it gives the defense something else to prepare for. You can also flex him a few yards from the tackle, leaving the slot in his normal position, but providing you with some inside bulk against LB’s and giving the defense alignment problems. Of course you can split him like a SE which may give you size advantages against a CB. Whatever it is TECH showed him it seems to have kept Lutzenkirchen interested.

I heard this kid has a neighbor who went to Tech. Apparently the neighbor is like a big brother and has influence over him. Word on the street is that the neighbor sold Phillip on Tech with the 70/30 guy/girl ratio and the chance to inherit the neighbor’s sacred GT pocket protector.

its funny how tech geeks think uga is a “thug” school. of course it is the only thing they can say because they cant beat us. i seem to remember some guy named Houston that had some much blow in his dorm room it would have sunk the titanic. i seem to remember he played in the bowl game the next week. if any athlete at uga actually had a “serious” charge on them Richt wouldnt let them EVER see the field. but when your desperate….

btw… tech lost that bowl game too. what a bunch of thugs those geeks are.

Paul Johnson is a good coach but he keeps saying we are going to recruit Georgia, which he should but I hope he doesn’t overlook one very important thing Tech has going for it. Among African-Americans around the country Atlanta is considered a most desired place to live. That’s why so many professional ball players live here. If Tech can get a 60-40 split with Georgia in the state for 4-5 star players and then capitalize on the city’s reputation amongst African-Americans then Tech fans will soon have the teams they desire.

Doesn’t this wrinkle your dawg fur!! PJ is already making an impact. All of the sudden, competing w/ UGA for some coveted recruits. Hasn’t happend the last few years as the Mutts OWN the state of Georgia (well, them and the devil, Nick Saban). Its a minute point, but a point worth noting. PJ will make an impact sooner rather than later

GT will get no big name recruits on the O-side until they prove that the system they are running can send players to the NFL. If you have a top recruit they are already thinking $$$ now so why would they want to go somewhere that jeporidizes their chances of being a high draft pick?

Steve, on the Houston case: Some idiot judge, probably a UGA grad, ORDERED him to be put back on the team. Gailey, for all his faults, was following a court order. Now go back to practicing your ‘Soulja Boy’ in front of the mirror.

Andy, Ever hear of a guy named Adrian Peterson……….. No, No, not that one, the other one with the Bears. And he was out of a 1-AA school. Imagine what a skilled player could do with more media exposure, especially here in Atlanta, a national media hub. If they are good enough, the NFL will take note.

Scout. com has Lutzenkirchen listed as a TE/LB recruit and mentions he has also played safety. Who knows ? Maybe this kid prefers to hit over getting hit. Who knows what was discussed ? The kid sounds satisfied with what he heard. Too bad if that makes you a little nervous or you wouldn’t be over reading “obscure” Tech blogs. It’s about more than Lutzenkirchen. I think you are starting to realize CPJ has some chemistry building and some top notch players in the state are starting to take note. The Gailey and Ball Era is about to become quickly forgotten history.

gtfan/ohio state…I think you are right about qb, T. Pryor. Would love to have him but you might just be better off without him or someone who thinks like him. T.P. said the reason he has not picked a school yet is that he has not had time to think about recruiting or college. That just has to be a lie. He must be consumed by 2nd period chemestry and 5th period english lit?? Now I am mad just thinking about it…TP I hope you go to Michigan stay away from Ohio St.
