Signing Day Central
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
National signing day has come and gone, and the final rankings are in:
— Mark Richt and Georgia brought in a consensus top 10 class, finishing No. 4 in Scout.com’s rankings and No. 6 on Rivals.com’s list. And the Bulldogs may not be done.
With North Carolina tight end Dwayne Allen’s last-minute flip-flop to Clemson, the Bulldogs still have a scholarship to give. “When all the dust settles, there might be someone out there we have been interested in, I don’t know,” Richt said.
— Paul Johnson’s Georgia Tech class was ranked 38th nationally by Scout.com and 49th by Rivals.com.
“I don’t get into all these rating services, and I don’t care who else is recruiting them,” Johnson said.
— Who’s No. 1? That’s Alabama, experts say. Three “five-star” recruits and 19 “four-star” players (according to Scout.com’s rankings) gave Nick Saban & Co. the edge.
The Tide’s headliners included wide receiver Julio Jones and linebacker Jerrell Harris. “Both will make a tremendous contribution to the future of our football program and our football team,” Saban told reporters in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
— Experts will tell you Jones is the nation’s top-ranked wideout. Summerville (S.C.) High coach John Mckissick begs to differ.
That distinction, he says, belongs to UGA-bound A.J. Green.
“I had the chance to watch Julio at the Under Armour All-American Game and he’s pretty good, but after having seen them both play, A.J. is a better receiver,” McKissick said. “I’ve been asked over the years, ‘Who is the greatest football player you’ve ever had?’ and I never answered because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.
“While we’ve had several great ones, now I don’t mind saying A.J. is the best all-around athlete we’ve ever had.”
For more on Green, UGA, Tech and others, check out our “recent entries” section to the left, where we’ve posted more than 200 stories in the last 24 hours. Recruiting coverage never stops at ajc.com. Stay tuned in the coming days for an early look at the class of 2009.

Good to have you back. I’m out of state and looking for an update on Omar Hunter. Haven’t kept up with recruiting lately. Is he definitly out of the mix for Georgia?

Shawn, Hunter is definitely a Gator. Our Jeff Hood spoke with him last night. “I’m definitely looking forward to getting down to Gainesville,” Hunter said. “I think it’s the place for me. I can’t wait to get down there and go to work.” Just posted that story. We’ll also be at his signing day ceremony … just in case.

Any surprises coming to athens that we haven’t already heard about? Or defectors?
By Jeff D'Alessio

Stockbridge Dawg, no surprises yet — or expected. Tech got one: Antonio Wilson signed at 7:15 (was committed to Vandy). We talked to Harmon, Jackson and others last night. They said no doubt about it; they’re signing. We’re at most of the big ceremonies today: A.J. Green, Harmon, Jackson, plus Ros, Rambo, Tavarres King, Christian Robinson, etc. The second there’s news, you’ll see it here.

My son, Walter Lenard, from Landmark Christian is signing today at 9:30. He will be attending Furman University where the African-American football player’s graduation rate is 99% compared to UGA’s 29%.(According to the USA Today Newspaper) I wish the best for all of the guys who are signing with big time football factories. I’m just concerned how many will earn a college degree in the next 4-5 years. This falls on the parents because it’s there ultimate responsiblity. Just look around at the athletes who end up on the news daily. Believe me, no one should be surprised.

Mr. Mackens,
Congratulations on your son signing with Furman. I agree the graduation rate at UGA needs to improve, but you must realize that many big time players are counting on going into the pros right or wrong, thats what they hope for. Smaller schools recruits do not really have that expectation and focus on getting a degree. So don’t cut on UGA its a totally different league than what you son is in.

Mrs. Mackens,
Congrats to you, your son, and your family for being one of the few people to be able to receive a scholarship to play football but before you knock other schools or “football factories” you need to look at things for what they are…these big programs (right or wrong) are around to produce players for the next level…places like furman are not…now if your child was good enough to get a scholarship to a “football factory” he probably would have went and if he was good enough to leave early for the NFL he probably would go because he could ALWAYS go back to school….and before you say no to this idea please remember a recent case… Calvin Johnson is an extremely smart young man whose mother is a teacher so education is extremely important…but he chose to leave school early… however he is also going back during the offseason to finish things….so don’t knock the big schools…just make sure your child graduates…

Congrats Ms. Mackens on your son. Furman is a good school and you should be proud of your son. That being said do you think that your comments in such a public forum are appropriate today? What about the other kid’s parents who are watching their son sign to play at one of the so called “football factories”?
Plus I don’t get who you are blaming for the graduation rates. First it’s the schools, but then it’s the parents? Which is it?
Your kid playing at Furman is truly super, but don’t be a hater on the ones that may be just a little better than him.

Ms. Mackens hats off to you and family. My concern is pensacola dog’s reply to the 99% vs. 29%. I have family members that played at small schools and the big schools, which recieve their degrees. The one at the small school is playing in the NFL. So what are you and the rest of the so call dog nation saying, as long as their healthy and play football who gives a damn about their education go to the NFL and continue not to be educated. I have ran into more guys that has play at UGA between the 80’s and 90’s and they don’t have too much but memories of how they love me in athens ask Fred Gibson,Connie Norris just to name a few do your research not even their degrees. IF the number is 29% now it’s well below 10% during those times due to fact that SAT and GPA didn’t matter for admittance hell back then you just had to graduate high school with no criminal record oh I forgot that still applies at the factories that have a less that 29% Black student athlete. I thank God the NCAA has up it’s requirements, not only are we exceptional athletes at these so call football factories, but are students athletes. Parents these fans don’t care about your child only what they can do for their so call football factories.

ACCFAN,Probably unlike you i actually played a college sport(baseball) at an SEC school. If a student is not graduating it is the STUDENTS fault.Crap they practically hold your hand with the tutors etc. There is no reason other than pure laziness on the students part if a degree is not obtained. It is not the school it is not the parents it is the STUDENT.The OPPORTUNITY is there. You must be a liberal that thinks someone other than yourself owes you a damn thing. You need to grow up

braveswin you need to grow up. I see you weren’t good enough to make it to majors. Just do your research that’s call reading, and if you read my statement it has nothing to do with liberals or conservatives that’s you bring your personal feelings do to the fact you feel use by the big schools and couldn’t make to the leauge. And by the way the tutors are their for you to use because you use them yourself and if you say that you didn’t, then I know you didn’t play at a major SEC school. You’re Lame.

braveswin, i agree completely with you. I too played college sports (football & track) “Go FSU” and the education is solely the students responsibility…..they are the ones that have to go to class not THE SCHOOL or THE PARENTS…you can only hope that the parents taught their children to be responsible enough to do these things and make the needed grades to graduate…in my case Coach Bowden constantly reminded us that everyone was not going to go pro so a degree was necessary…….and then his message to those that were going pro was that the NFL was not going to be eternal and you still needed something to fall back on…..so the bottom line is that it is the responsibility of the student to graduate

ACCFAN,I tried deciphering your second post(try spell check)My point is that it is the students responsibility to get an education. The schools are GIVING them an opportunity to get an education in exchange for their athletic talents. It does not matter if it is at a DII or DI school or if they are black, white or whatever the STUDENT is responsible for their studies. If you or anyone else thinks it is the schools responsibility to make sure a student graduates then my previous assessment of you remains unchanged. And yes I used tutors and graduated in 4.5 yrs.I worked hard and obtained my degree. And no I didn’t play major league ball but did reach AA for 2yrs.See, I took responsibility for MY life as EVERYONE should.

Ok people obviously this subject needs to be called what it actually is. College football on a “footbal factory” division I school level is nothing but a MONEY MACHINE!! These schools use student athletes for every ounce of athletic ability to get more money. Its simple economics. THESE SCHOOL PRODUCE ATHLETES TO MAKE THEM MONEY RIGHT NOW NOT TO GO TO THE NFL!!!! DUH!! HALF OF THEM ARENT EVEN BUILT TO LAST IN THE NFL!!! THATS WHY YOU HAVE A GREATER NUMBER OF GREAT COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYES WHO PLAYED ONLY IN COLLEGE AND NOT IN COLLEGE AND THE NFL!!!! SOME OF THEM ARE NATURALLY BUILT FOR NFL LEVEL FOOTBALL BUT THE MAJORITY ARE NOT!!Then when their eligibility is over they could care less if they graduate why bc YOUR NOT ON THE FIELD WINNING GAMES!!!!. Which brings me to the topic Mackens presents and i agree with 110% because I am african american male who has a masters degree. Yeah you have some athletes who use school for what its worth an education. But 80% of the a college football team’s roster DONT EVEN MAKE IT TO THE NFL!!!! BE REAL ABOUT IT PEOPLE!! So this idea of oh im going to play college football to get to the league and not focus on my education is a LAME EXCUSE. Yea the blame is on the student bc you are an adult and should be held accountable for your actions BUT MUCH MORE BLAME IS ON THE INSTITUTION OF HIGHER LEARNING for CREATING A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT TO ALLOW ATHLETES TO HALF DO THEIR ACADEMIC WORK AND DO WHAT THEY WANT. The cheating scandal at FSU is a prime example. Im sure what happened there goes on at EVERY OTHER SCHOOL THEY JUST HAPPENED TO GET CAUGHT. How do I know bc I got friends thaT played at Florida and Georgia Tech and various other schools. So when they transferred to a division II school and realized that they really have to go to class and really have to do the work…They almost flunked out!! And who gives athletes the privelege of having tutors??? Are they not regular students just like you and I?? Are they spending that much time away from class to study football?? So whats the real reason “football factories” recruit african american athletes to come their school??? DUH!!!! MONEY!!!! EVERY MAJOR GREAT FOORBALL TEAM IS FULL OF AFRICAN AMERICAN PLAYERS..no im not knoocking them because some of them are actually smart enough to get into the school of their choice without football but a MAJORITY OF THEM ARE NOT WHICH REFELCTS ON LOW GRADUATION RATES!!! COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS MONEY MAKING MACHINE….THATS Y THE BCS WILL NEVER GO AWAY TO MUCH MONEY INVOLVED..WHICH BRINGS ME TO ANOTHER POINT..WHY IS IT THAT COLLEGE FOOTBALL ON THE MAJOR FOOTBALL FACTORY SCHOOL LEVEL HAVE SO FEW AFRICAN AMERICAN COACHES??U ANSWER THAT.. TEAM IS FULL OF AFRICAN AMERICAN PLAYERS BUT THE HEAD COACHING POSITION CONTINUES TO GET FILLED BY RECYCLED COACHES AND KEPT OUT OF REACH OF AFRICAN AMERICAN COACHES…Macken I commend your son’s decision. I wish more parents would recognize whats really going on in college athletics instead of allowing them to sell dreams of making it to the NFL bc even if you do make it to the NFL the average NFL life of a college football players who wasnt on every highlight reel on ESPN is about 3 yrs barring injury. So then your left without a job no college degree back to square 1 when you go to college to make it to the NFL. I wish more athletes would get their education and use college for what it is worth..learning to build you life for the future..but it wont change. It takes good parents and good football programs that are built upon academics to increase the graduation rates across the nation. Im not saying there arent great student atheletes who graduate and do what they are suppose to do…but that number is GREATLY OUTNUMBERED BY THE PLAYERS WHO DO NOT GRADUATE…ESPECIALLY AMONG AFRICAN AMERICAN FOOTBALL PLAYERS

Sign with UGA today and play in the best league in the land and play for NC’s or miss the boat and play in the sorry a$$ ACC for a team that will lose 3 to 5 games a year. Mikerosssiminole, Let’s not talk about Florida State and the criminals, Janokowski(drugs),Warrick(theft)and oh yeah whose needs a tutor when you can take classes online if you play football at FSU…oh that’s illegal. But it’s a responsibilty to take care of that child because when the recruiters enter their homes telling thier parents I will take care of your child I promise, please let him come to my school so I can keep my job and keep the boosters and stupid fans from asking for my head, please let me have your child. It’s a numbers game get as many 5 and 4 star recruits as we can and when they don’t produce…oh well. The key is encouragment, and you guys that has play at the big schools how much is that head coach and others coaches are invole in academics….none that’s why they have a academic staff and tutors, so they can coach and recruit and teach football not academics.

accfan, it is real simple for me to talk about my school so of course i will…but i guess you are so stuck on reading your own typed words that you fail to comprehend what others write. I know that some of my former teammates did bad things…….but the bottom line still remains the same it is the student’s responsibility to do right and that includes all things both on and off the field…..as far as tutors are concerned plenty of S.A. (student-athletes) need them for various reasons….i’m glad you’re an acc fan (per your name) but make sure that you have a valid comment based on all facts and not just what you read and claim to have knowledge of…
as a member of a proud university and football family from a major program I enjoy providing true and relevant insight especially for those who have no clue about things from big-time universities (both good and bad) but only from things that they read or hear on the news or espn

It’s just a blog with an opinion people…I must have hit someone below the belt, especially the fans in athens. I had a GA Fan tell me that the dogs are the most organize franchise collegiate and professinally,I beg to differ. Once again you guys are missing the point. The kids are use up for yours and mine pleasure. Once again check the stats of the Mighty SEC football factory and the Graduation Percentage for the past 30 years.

UGA’s job isnt to graduate football players. UGA has big time talent and sends many players to the NFL. We don’t want a bunch of seniors on our team. We want guys that are so talented that they leave a year early. Schools that graduate a bunch of players don’t have talent.

Tech gets a switch from a former Vandy verbal and that is Top Billing on the Tech Front. Next stop NC for Tech!!! Your character speaks volumes - we certainly don’t need any candy@sses in Athens that are afraid of a little competition. I think this sums up the collective feeling about UGA’s recruiting class..the ones that we REALLY wanted turns out are the ones who REALLY wanted to be a Dawg..ENTIRE class signed before the lunch rush.. and as for Allen..it was obvious he didn’t know where he wanted to go..perhaps it was gamesmanship or selfish drama but he is now a Tiger and I wish him well..UGA wont miss him nearly as much as Clemson will miss Harmon..I’m a Dawg 1st by birth,2nd by choice, and PROUDLY by being an alumni…its IN me until I leave this earth..and THATS the kind of players I’d rather have wearing the RED AND BLACK!!! And judging from the players who just signed as well as the ones who are already WANTING to be a Dawg in next year’s 2009 class we are getting those players!! So I say WELCOME to the family new guys..we are glad that you WANT us as much as we Want you!!! BRING ON GEORGIA SOUTHERN…and everyone else remember this..you are either a DAWG or you will be DAWG FOOD!!!!

To everyone who had something negative to say to Denise Mackens you need to do some research before you start knocking kids. I can quote you his vitals of 6’1 190 lbs a 40 of 4.4 with a squat of 610 and yes that is legit. He also rushed for over 1300 yards and had over 550 yards receiving. Oh yeah it was only his first year playing running back and only second year playing football ever. When Missouri was #1 in the country the week they played Oklahoma there coaches were calling the office trying to get Walt up there, but Walt has a great support group that understands the NFL is not the only way for a young African American male to be successful. Adrian Peterson for the Bears went to 1-AA Ga Southern and turned down FLA along with many other schools. Wes Welker walked on at Texas Tech and now holds the record for most receptions in the super bowl. Jerry Rice the greatest receiver and maybe football player ever went to a division 2 school.
All this was said to say that what you should have got out of her statement was that anytime a kid gets his higher education paid for his primary focus should be on that higher education and the statistics prove that this is not the case.

coach…that is well said but to correct one thing to your statement (because I am friends with Adrian) he did turn down Florida and Syracuse because they stereotyped him as being unintelligent enough to handle their systems due to speech problem. That would bring about other issues for how major programs do things like this but that is not the point here…..the point is to be happy for each of these young men and their families…everyone is not going to go to all large institutions, etc. but because of this fact do not knock those who do (even if they are going only for a shot at the nfl) just make the best of the situation that is presented to you whether that means to get a degree or just to go to school to get a shot for bigger things………..I know how proud my family was when I accepted my scholarship to FSU so I hope that all of these parents are just as proud

Coach, Case in point is the comments of those like Brice Butler…”three years in college then on to the NFL” It’s nice to have goals but some of these kids need to be prepared for life first and foremost just in case the NFL isn’t there in three or four years. No matter which way you get to college (through football, band, debate team, hardwork, etc.)it is prudent to take advantage of the opportunity. I wish the best to all the fortunate D-1,II and III signees!

I would think there would be too much pressure to play QB for his dad. A lot of kids going off to college want to do just that, go off to college. There’s thousands of recruits that don’t want to play at certain schools, it doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with the school.

I so enjoy the uga fans obsessing over the GATORS year after year. One win over the GATORS and the uga faithful start thinking they have a dynasty again. Check that, the uga fans have always thought they have had a football dynasty. A dynasty is not defined as stringing together a bunch of 8 and 3 seasons.

This blog has become so asinine…it’s the reason I only check them out about once a week. EG nunna yo biznezz, ACCFan, ATLdawgfromFLA. This blog is about National Signing Day, not about how many times UGA beat FLA. To think that a coache’s son going to another school reflects on the coach is just ignorant. To start arguing back and forth about whether Div 1 is comprised mostly of ‘football factories’; and on and on, is just tedious to the extreme. It’d be great if most of the comments dealt with the topic at hand. Anyway, this is a ‘blog’-about recruiting. Therefore, D.Allen and L.Butler switching is news. Sure, it’s no big deal to most of us that UGA ‘dropped from 3rd to 4th’, but it IS recruiting news. If recruiting isn’t a big deal to you, don’t read about. Stick with the rest of the sports pages. And please, people-quit pressing the ‘post’ button three or four times and, please, quit making your entire post all caps. Half of yall are driving me nuts. Oh, here comes the nurse with my meds. This is for Dennise Makens: It’s probably a good thing your son is going to Furman, because he realized he will not make it to the pros, as many of GA players do. The competition is without a doubt MUCH more stronger than your son will experience at Furman. The PRO scouts will most likely not even know that he exists, much less having a chance to being drafted. And, you being one of many uninformed GA bashers about graduation, realize this: that after three years of extensive training at UGA, they are ready for the PROs, which is where many of them go, thusly, decreasing the graduation rate at UGA. For your info, in the past 5 years, there have been 39 UGA defensive players that was drafted into the PROs, not to mantion several offensive players. So, when you factor in all these players who go to the PROs early, which most non-informed bashers don’t do, the graduation rate at UGA would be a lot higher. Hope your son makes the grades at little Furman to accomplish his desires and to be one of those who do graduate because he didn’t get drafted into the PRO ranks. AND QUIT BASHING UGA and think during the next four years what could have been for your son because he turned down UGA for little ole powerhouse Furman. GO DAWGS, GO DAWGS.

Wow,
One mother whose son plays for Stone Mountain, a public school, is proud of her son for earning a scholarship to Virginia State.
Another mother, whose son plays for Landmark Christian, a private school, gives us an insincere civics lesson on race.
Mrs. Mackens, how many black children attend Landmark Christian (and please don’t offend us by including those who attend on an athletic scholarship, and please don’t offend us futher by telling us that Landmark Christian doesn’t give athletic scholarships)?
In reading your email, ironically, it didn’t take a college graduate to determine that you really are NOT truly concerned about the graduation rates of black players at the University of Georgia.
What it did reveal however, was that you are the kind of person who thinks she is above being associated with such poor institutions, such as public high schools or UGA.
And as a bonus, you offended many black people in our state and many of the thousands of UGA alums that are your neighbors.
It would have had a better impact if you had just said that you were proud of your son (even though he’s not good enough to play for Georgia).
I wish you could have been more like Tomeka Lockhart of Stone Mountain. With an upbeat and wise mother, her son is destined to go far.
Finally, I doubt the good people who are the leaders of Furman University would endorse one thought in your brain.

Denise,
Congratulations on your son attending Furman. You should be proud.
He would have done just as well academically at UGA as he would at Furman. 100% of the students who WANT to graduate and have the ability to, do just that at BOTH schools.
He would have been surounded by an average SAT score of over 1200 at UGA in the classroom. That is the average SAT of a student at Georgia.
I wish him the best of luck on the field and the classroom at Furman, but don’t believe the hype!

Not certian, but how can a school (in this case Alabama) sign more letters of intent then the NCAA allows. If they are only allowed 25 max, how did they sign 31 or 31? What happens if all qualify (academically)? Will a kid be told after the fact that the school won’t honor its committment?
Seems unfair…

In response to the Furman signee’s coach’s post above:
Adrian Peterson did NOT turn down UF, he was never offered primarily because of his stuttering problem.
He wound up at Georgia Southern primarily because Tracy Ham knew of him and recommended him and GSU had a speech therapy person in the faculty who could give him one on one attention…
… and comparing Peterson’s exploits at GSU to any other back in the history of FCS is an injustice.
Peterson set records in Paul Johnson’s system at GSU that will never be broken and was arguably the best player in the history of the division.
PS: I don’t believe a 4.4 and 600+ squat either.

Weak and lame excuses about African Americans graduation rates among football players. It is up to the student athlete to get the job done. Furman will not be the one to blame if your son doesn’t get his degree. Your son should have gone to Tech, they’re the only school that gets all the rocket scientists. I will call Coach Lamb at Furman and tell him you are on the way, a mom coming with her son from Landmark who has this whole thing figured out. She has all the answers, just needs a few questions. Sure Coach Lamb looks forward to dealing with you over the next 5 years. If anythings goes wrong, it will be him or the University at fault. ACC and Jeremy are both idiots who don’t belong on a blog. They should hold those post for 24 hours before putting them on. Denise, why would you put this “racial connotation” into signing a football scholarship. Be happy your son is playing football and you don’t have to pay the 30K a year it costs to go to Furman. Will check you out with the good folks I know at Landmark Christian. Sounds like you might be a trouble maker. I know Landmark is proud of the attention your post brings to their school. I know Coach Lamb, whose dad is on the staff at UGA, will be happy with your post knocking UGA also…

So UG loses the TE to Clemson. With all the comparison talk of Walker and Knoshaw, I think UG could save the scholarship. Remember Herschel left after his Jr yr for the big bucks. Use the 2008 season to lure a kid that might otherwise go elsewhere.

UGA Fans and Alum, forget Denise, other than to congratulate her son on working hard on the field and off the field to get offered a scholarship to any school. With that said and done, onto today’s signing class. Don’t knock Allen, we lost the coach that originally recruited him and he decided to go elsewhere. A good and talented kid I am sure, I wish you the best except when you play GA or his team winning negatively affects UGA. We got a great class fans!!!! A.J. needs to study, study, study and qualify along with the others. Our team has depth like you wouldn’t believe. DeAngelo, welcome aboard, King welcome aboard…sounds like the Bulldog Train is pulling out of the Station. GO DAWGS!!!!

Don’t believe what the AJC says here about Omar Hunter. HE WANTED TO GO TO UGA…that comes straight from a Buford coach that spoke with him this morning.
Omar signed his UF papers, faxed them and literally minutes later an offer came from UGA(thanks to the Allen kid that backed out).
Omar, UGA coaches and the UGA fans are all disappointed that he’s not going to UGA. The kid really did want to be a Bulldog.

Don’t believe everything you read about Omar Hunter here on the AJC…OMAR HUNTER WANTED TO GO TO UGA! As a coach from Buford told me this morning…He was still wanting to go to UGA, signed and faxed the papers to UF and then got an offer from UGA(thanks to Allen decommitting). OMAR WAS DISAPPOINTED. Omar, UGA coaches and UGA fans are all disappointed that he’s not a Dawg. But it does make me respect Richt and fellow coaches for not backing out on any of their other promises to kids.

You guys need to actually know what was going on. Omar Hunter was late to his actual signing because he was having second thoughts. UGA called him with the scholly offer 2 minutes after he faxed it in. He indeed talked to UGA last week and wanted to be a DAWG. He is happy he is a gator now and I hope the best for him when it’s not UGA, but UGA got word from dwayne too late to do anything about it.
They also called Zebrie who was almost in tears when he was told they had a spot for him.

Just for the record, there were not any black players in the ACC in 1960’s either. The idea that the ACC is exempt from racism is hilarious.
Every Georgia high school senior would kill to have the opportunity that these athletes are getting. More than half of these kids, probably would not even get to go to college. And not because of their grades but because they would not be able to afford it. Even Today, the majority of the population does not go to college. THEY ARE GETTING TO GO TO COLLEGE FOR FREE!!!!
I am a life long Georgia Bulldog fan and former UGA student but if George O’Leary or Steve Spurrier walked into my parents living room in the fall of 1997 and said Mr.* would you like to play football at Georgia Tech or Florida and as an added bonus go to school for free!,” I would sign on the spot and SO WOULD YOU!
College Athletes are much more structured than the rest of the student body at ANY OF THESE SCHOOLS-UGA and BAMA included. Required study hours, free tutors, free meal plan, and not to mention they get to register FIRST.
College is what you make it. IF YOU ARE GIVEN AN OPPURTUNITY, AND YOU BLOW IT, IT IS NOBODY’S FAULT BUT YOUR OWN.

Ms. Mackens, Congratulations on getting your son into Furman. As an African-American, UGA Letterman and University of Geaorgia graduate (AB ‘92), I hope that more parents put the emphasis on their sons doing the right thing in the classroom and in the community while they’re in school. There are numerous examples of the public humiliation that they bring to themselves, their families, and their schools when they lose focus on those two priorities. A good rule of thumb for your son is that if he wouldn’t want you to see him doing it, it’s probably not the right thing to do. End of the day, it’s the student athlete’s fault if they don’t graduate in 4-5 years, not the school! Make sure that your son knows that every athlete will play his last snap of football regardless of how good he is. He better have something to fall back on. Have him use the program to build networks that will help him once the cheering stops. Above all else…HAVE FUN. There was nothing like being a Bulldog on a Saturday night! Good luck & God Bless you and your family.

Denise, Thanks for pointing out that UGA is a football factory. Their athletes mostly take worthless JOCK majors Like Recreation and Leisure Studies, wow! Some take PE and there are others. Why graduate? These majors won’t help you get a job. They justify this by saying that UGA puts them into the NFL. President Adams himself was quoted recently saying only 2% of athletes actually get a paycheck in the NFL. A quality degree is important. You are wise to be proud of your son. Don’t let these UGA fans bother you. Your SON made a wise decision going to Furman.

Sorry to the Georgia fans who think I’m “hating” on their school. Just concerned with our young African-American men earning an education. No, Georgia did not recruit my son but believe me, I’m not disappointed in that. As far as the stats on graduation, read the USA Today article that was written the day following the Sugar Bowl. That’s where I received my information. Just remember one thing, just because a person expresses their opinion, this does not call for others to be nasty and distasteful. We all have our opinions. Have a great day.

Ms Mackens: “…Just concerned with our young African-American men earning an education…” My next door neighbor is from Africa and he’s concerned too. And him being a white guy doesn’t slant his views one way or the other.

all you bloggers remember that these rankings mean nothing, a 5 star kid can easily lose his way once he is away from his parents for the first time, remember the great xavier lee, everybody’s all american, things really didnt work out, and jimmy clausen, the best qb to ever play high school football, give it time good people, at the end of the day these are 18 year olds who will be wide eyed when their parents drop them off, judge these classes in about 2 years these rankings are fools gold

Congratulations to all of the young men and women who will accept athletic scholarships. Secondly, thanks to all of you Georgia fans out there. It’s really not that serious! You have taught me alot in one day and I am very grateful. My wish is for all of these athletes to earn an education because it’s something that could never be taken away. Enjoy the rest of signing day.

Wow, I read the posts addressed to Ms. Mackens and it saddened me that some of the Dawg fans could be so cruel to a mother who seemed happy her child earned a scholarsip. I have’nt read the article she referenced but if it’s true that we graduat 29% of our black players then clearly we have work to do. Go Dawgs.

Denise,
Congrats on your son accepting a scholarship at Furman. First and foremost, he will get a great education there. I do think you were a little harsh on the UGA crowd, but the graduation rate there speaks for itself. The truth of the matter is that Furman recruits more “student-athletes” than UGA (higher admission requirements), whereas UGA recruits more “athletes” minus the student. That’s not to say you can’t be a student athlete there…29% choose to do so, 71% do not.
Yes, more players at Georgia go to the pro ranks. That’s a fact, but don’t let the UGA fans make you think that Furman doesn’t produce professional football players. Furman FB Jerome Felton played in the East-West Shrine game and will be at the NFL Combine in a couple of weeks. He is listed as one of the top 3 FB’s in the country by the NFL Scouts, with Jacob Hester of LSU and Owen Schmitt of WV. Also remember, some of the top players in today’s game came from I-AA or FBS schools. Terrell Owens from UTC, Randy Moss from Marshall (which was I-AA), Tony Romo (E. Illinois), and Kurt Warner (N. Iowa). Just because Furman only has 2,500 students and their football stadium only seats 16,000, don’t think that good football players won’t get the attention.
Furman has upset many I-A (FBS) schools including South Carolina, GA Tech, NC State, and North Carolina.

OMAR Hunter will be in the rotation for the GAYTORS because they don’t have any depth on the d-line. He won’t start but will play. At UGA he wpuld have been REDSHIRTED - there is quality experienced depth two deep. Hunter know this and was never interested in UGA for that reason. For that same reason Lanier has committed to Tech.

In response to all the whinning about football factories and all the kids being taking advantage of. I walked on at Tech in the 80’s. Never got to play. I simply was not good enough. I got my education because I knew I needed it. I made a personal decision to go to class and get my education. Every athlete can make that same decision. I’m tired of society blaming everyone else for an individual making bad decisions. If you get a FREE College Education to a fine University and choose to either not go to class or get a degree that is worthless it’s not the school’s fault our the football program’s fault. It’s your fault. Take respondsiblity for you own life. I wish someone would have paid for my education.
