Richt: ‘It’s not quite over yet’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Just before noon, Mark Richt addressed the masses in Athens. His message:
“It’s not quite over yet.”
Where the intrigue enters is the scholarship that has been vacated by Dwayne Allen. When the Fayetteville (N.C.) tight end opted for Clemson at the last minute, Georgia was left searching for another guy.
The target could be Bobby Massie, a lineman from Lynchburg, Va. The 6-foot-6, 325-pound Massie has been a target of Georgia’s and North Carolina’s. But Massie is most likely headed to prep school first.
Georgia may also opt to hold the scholarship and add to the what is expected to be a very small class in 2009. As of right now, Georgia will go into next season with just 13 seniors.
Georgia already has five commitments for 2009.

Georgia is so screwed now…
They only have four other TE’s on the depth chart! Allen was the only way they could have competed for the NC.
Allen’s gonna lead Clemson straight back to the Peach Bowl!!!

It could only be Bobby Massie, as Omar Hunter and Zebrie Sanders have already signed their LOI.

This is a long shot, but if we decide to use the scholarship this year, could we go after Tyrelle Pryor? He’s not deciding today, so I think we could have a shot at him, but it will hurt as that we never went after the kid.

Whatever Coach Richt does with the extra scholarship, it will be what is best for the team. He is a great coach and I trust his judgement.

Gooddawg, don’t mean to be rude, but that’s about the dumbest thing I ever heard. I guarandamntee you UGA isn’t even on Pryor’s radar. We could fly up there with the keys to a new hummer and he wouldn’t think about us.

cddawg… so few scholarships next year b/c only 13 seniors. There is a maximum of number of players on scholarship set by NCAA. So if only those 13 leave… only will have 13 to offer. If two juniors leave, the number would increase to 15.

The only reason I even mentioned it is because I heard a rumor that Pryor was on a radio show last night and when asked about Georgia he stated that he loved our offense and that he would be a good fit but that we had not shown any interest in him.

It’s funny how the Jackets fans come on here and bash what is likely to be a top 5 recruiting class because 1 guy decided to switch again. Dont you remember, we landed the number 1 TE in the country last recruiting class? If we dont land one this year, believe we will be able to land a top one next year.It is sad, however, that the guy screwed our scholorship spot like that, telling everyone he was with us so we would not offer someone else. Go Dawgs

This might be a great opportunity to find a “program guy”, maybe a 2-star that bleeds Georgia red who will be a special teams maniac for the next four years. Or maybe someone who will mature into a solid starter. Or have another scholarship available for a big fish next year. With Georgia’s depth at tight end, this may turn out to be a good thing.

Why do so many of Richt’s recruits go to prep schools? If they can’t get into UGA in the first place, we really shouldn’t be recruiting them.
Stuff like this gives the SEC their bad rep for using any means necessary to win. How much more can Richt cover up in the future?

Good Dawg - you heard a rumor? Come on. Look at our offense. What about it would be attractive to a running QB? We run the ball alot. We pass from the pocket. None of the QB’s we’ve signed in recent years are running QB’s. He is made for a spread offense. Not what we run. That rumor makes no sense and it ain’t true.

I said “SIGNED” in recent years. Shockley signed 6 years ago. Even with Shockley, the offense rarely was designed for him to run. Most of his runs were when the play wasn’t there. As for Gray, I don’t know, he hasn’t PLAYED yet. I’m not saying these guys never run. I’m saying the offense is not built around them running.
But all of it is really about one thing: Pryor never listed UGA as one of his favs. He never visited. He never mentioned UGA (except through the “rumor” you heard). And UGA isn’t offering a QB this year.
I am simply making the fairly obvious point that you made a dumb comment. Accept it. Move on.

Shockley was a scrambler in high school and Gray is very athletic. Both are not just “running QBs”. some of you guys need to do your homework. If any of you have watched Pryor’s highlights or his game on ESPNU, you can tell he is very raw right now as a passer.
Logan Gray was a better passer than Pryor in high school. Even the scouting reports on ESPN and rivals said that Gray only ran when he had to. Shockley was a coach’s kid and very polished by the time he got to UGA. Terrell Pryor doesnt fit our system and I wouldnt want him to come to UGA. Some people even project him as an “athlete” who could wind up playing DE.

Actually - a running QB would be better served long term to go to a pro style offense. The hardest part for Spread and running QBs from college in the NFL, is adjusting to the pro-style and sitting in the pocket. If you look at Richt’s history - he has done very well with running QB’s ex.: DJ Shockley and Charley Ward. It all depends on if the QB wants to be great right off the bat in college but struggle in the NFL, or work slowly into a college system but have a head start in the NFL.
That being said I doubt Pryor will really come to UGA.

If the staff likes another player and we can get them… great. If not, there is nothing wrong with holding one ‘ship until next year since this class is so big and the next one will likely be much smaller.
He might have been a good player, but I was shocked that UGA was trying to sign 2 TE’s this year. With the number of TE’s already on the roster and the class seperation, it seemed strange to me from the begining. Maybe, Richt and Co. thought he could be a special player.
I wish him good luck at Clemson other than when and and if he plays the Dawgs!

With an open spot…and IF we dont just hold it for next season, we could still very easily sign a diamond in the rough before the day is over. Anyone remember when we added a player a few yrs back at the very last slot?? Not rated very high, small….TIM JENNINGS….became an all SEC DB. So who knows what still might happen.

I think coaches and some bloggers get more excited about recuiting than the average fan. I like to hear about the kids, but we never know until they get on campus and start the process. If they cannot handle a red-shirt, we don’t need them. I think that all on the team should be given the chance to compete, but I would never guarantee a signee that he will play this fall. I do not think that Richt and staff do either.
Having said that, it looks like a good group, thanks Coach Garner and the rest of the staff.

If Georgia is stocked with talent at tight end, why was Richt so hot for Allen? Either Richt is not that bright, the other ends are not that good, or Richt is expecting more attrition than usual at that position through criminal arrests and academic failure. The same can be said about running backs.

Pryor is visiting Penn State and then Oregon. He could easily take over where Dennis Dixon left off. That Spread offense they run out there, fits him like a glove but then again so does Michigan who also runs the spread. Jamie Newberg said on Comcast “In the Huddle,” that it could be into March or April before he decides. Because of basketball season, he does not have alot of time for visits. Ronald Curry pulled the same stunt before commiting to UNC years ago.

If we don’t WIN the SEC and then go to the National Championship this year then it may never happen. How many years of TOP recruiting classes does it take.
