Rating the ACC
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Miami grabbed what could be considered the best class in the country in what was a somewhat satisfying year for the ACC.
Nine 5-star recruits signed with the ACC, with Miami (4) and Florida State (3) leading the way. Clemson signed the other two. In comparison, the SEC signed 13, with the Pac-10 signing 11.
A look at the conference:
Immediate impact: E.J. Manuel, QB, FSU. Physically, Manuel, rated the No. 2 QB in the country, seems perfect. He’s 6-5, 210 pounds, and fast. But he’s not what you would consider a Charlie Ward-type player. He could solve the Seminoles’ decade-long problem at QB.
Wait a year: Sean Renfree, QB, Duke. You may remember Renfree as a player who decommitted from Georgia Tech following Chan Gailey’s resignation. Well, Renfree will now be playing for David Cutcliffe, who developed the Manning brothers in college. Granted, it’s Duke. But it has been proven that a good QB and a good system can provide results.
Biggest surprise: Miami. There’s something to be said for location and tradition, because the Hurricanes certainly didn’t win recruits with their play last year.
Who will be happiest in three years? Clemson. The Tigers added depth with highly regarded recruits at quarterback, running back and on the lines. If they can get over their annual fascination with firing Tommy Bowden, and stop losing games to inferior opponents, they are steadily acquiring the talent to help them relive their glory days.

LeSean McCoy!!??!?!?!? What the F are you people writing up here!??!? Do you even know anything? I know this paper has to write about a 2nd rate program in GT but the least you could do write stuff about the other teams CURRENT recruiting class and not something that happened 3 years ago. And to top it all off, he never even enrolled at Miami!! So you know b/c its obvious someone needs to help Doug Roberson out, but McCoy is currently at Pittsburgh and he committed to Miami 3 years ago, could not get in, went to prep school for a year and decided to go to Pitt when he found out that his teammate Graig Cooper was going to Miami. If you are going to write, can we please live in the now? Thanks!

And to make you look more like an idiot Roberson, we do not even have a RB recruit in our class this year! We recruited 1 and that was Jamie Harper who went to Clemson. When you write about Miami and our #1 class, show us some respect and put the Wild Turkey down when you write. Just a piece of advice.

Wake is rated last every year, but those players turn out better than anyone expects.
-Kenny Moore (broke Torry Holt’s ACC record for catches in a season) -Riley Skinner -Chris Barclay (ACC POY a couple of years ago) -Jeremy Thompson -Ryan Plackemeier -Steve Justice -Tyson Clabo -Ovie Mughelli -Eric King -Fred Robbins -Desmond Clark -Calvin Pace
We’ve also won a title in the new ACC before most of those “football schools” rated higher than us. I guess since we’re only a school of 4,000, we don’t sell a lot of subscriptions.

Just like preseason Rankings.. these number are all opinion. See you in September on the field and that’s all that matters.

my bad on Miami. When researching their class, I picked up a bad web cache on my computer, which caused the error. My apologies. You’ll find a correction in tomorrow’s paper.

My bad on Miami. During my reporting I came across a bad web cache which caused the errors. That, and I didn’t take my time.

“When researching their class, I picked up a bad web cache on my computer”. Best excuse of all time. Cache hadn’t been cleared/deleted in 3 years.

I’ll keep taking ACC titles with these low rated players that come to Wake each year. Roberson, you are sad excuse for a sports reporter. Maybe your brain had a bad web cache too.

“Maybe your brain had a bad web cache too.”
It won’t be the last time, that’s for sure.
As for someone doubting my webcache, I don’t need any help looking goofy, that’s for sure. I know what I saw. I just didn’t recognize that it was bad information. Again, my apologies.

Doug Roberson — Overall, your article is well-written and informative. Please don’t allow rancorous critics, whose impatience with your imperfection must be rooted in their own stainless inerrancy, to cause you any grief. The past is usually the best predictor of the future, and, of course, we see once again that some fans will be offended and vitriolic if you don’t rate their teams high enough to please them. If you dare disagree, you get bombed. They owe you an apology as much as vice-versa. Judging from your gracious responses to their abuse, even though you would be justified in blasting back, you aren’t exactly letting them ruin your appetite.
Although I believe Georgia Tech’s 2008 class might be reasonably viewed as ranking better than 8th place in the ACC, I’m not worried about it because I think that recruiting ratings, while offering some value and accuracy in predicting performance, can be overblown in importance. Many 2-star kids over the years have gone on to do great things in college and the NFL. Tech, while not filling all available scholarship allotments (and operating under the pressure of a coaching transition plus a paradigm shift in offensive systems) acquired some very talented players to fit key positions, such as (but not limited to) the 4-star lineman that Coach Giff said last night, during the signing day “celebration” at the Opera club, will play offensive guard, as well as the two super-fast slotbacks for the triple option.
I expect Tech to adjust quickly and gallop up and down the field sooner rather than later, and to finish in the national top five in rushing this coming ‘08 season. If the defense comes through — and defenders should often be well-rested due to frequent long, sustained drives — then I look for Tech to win nine or more games.
Thanks for a good write-up.

BFD…as in the university that I graduated from. Ever stepped in to a classroom at one of them? And redneck university does not count bubba.
Roberson…it takes a big person to own up to the mistake. I take back all I said, though we at Miami would have liked a little better write up considering we did have the #1 recruiting class on ESPN and a consensus top 5.
By the way, on our message boards today and on alot of others and not just Miami’s, this is the rumor going around about Jamie Harper and the BS that Clemson pulled to get him in their class. Its a Bowden so it is expected I guess, they are as dirty as they come. Anyway, read this:
Per GFerman on Canesport from multiple sources…
J Harper was all set to ink with Miami. Clemson called him and told him if he didn’t sign with them they were going to pull his boy (Andrews) schollie and send him packin. Miami said they would honor the kids scholly but his folks(one of them really ill) wanted him at Clemson, so they both inked with Clemson.
So you guys know, Harper and Andrews played at the same HS in Jacksonville.
We were having a chat w/ Larry Blustein, a great insider on high schools in S. Florida, and he eluded to this the night before signing day, though not coming out and saying it directly, be mentioned the “the sad side of recruiting.”
Seeing as we we are all in the same conference, just thought you guys here in the ATL would like to know that we have to slime ball Bowden’s to deal with although I have to say, thats pretty low for anyone, though maybe not for a Bowden.
Hey Roberson, know anything about this story?

Miami Hurricanes = ZERO ACC championships & ZERO ACC championship appearances. No Hurricane warning here; perhaps a tropical depression or maybe just a rain shower.

We don’t deal in local championships, we deal in NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! We have 5 of them… you? Thats what I thought Sol. A dynasty never dies!!

This ridiculous Miami story is insulting. FYI, Harper was down to Illinois and Clemson. He had been Clemson his entire recruitment. Andrews sent his LOI in the morning so that BS rumor has zero validity. Idiotic message board. If Harper would have wanted to sign with Miami, he would have signed with Miami. Obviously, he wanted to go to Clemson.

Big strong players on the line will defenately strenthen Clemson play but what I personally liked about the new recruites is Jamie Harper. When Clemson could pound it up the middle with 3rd and two or three. It took a lot of pressure off the QB. It’s hard to cover a power tight end and a power back at the same time in this situation. A quick wide out could also go a long way when you decided to go that way instead. Jamie Harper could be something special if he gets strong and scary.
