Petrino, Saban flex: Rating the SEC

They may be disingenuous knuckleheads to most of the country, but Alabama’s Nick Saban and Arkansas’ Bobby Petrino proved that while they might be short on staying power, they are long on recruiting skills, pulling down two excellent classes.

Overall, the SEC again is considered to have the best class top-to-bottom in the country, with the Crimson Tide and Georgia among most recruiting services’ top 5 teams.

A look at the conference:

Immediate impact: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama. Jones, the No. 1-ranked wide receiver in the country, is the type of player Alabama hasn’t had the past two years - big (6-feet-4, 205) and fast (4.4 in the 40). He has been compared to Michael Irvin, which has its pluses and minuses. Tide fans just want someone who can help free up the running game and make opposing defenses respect the pass. Jones had more than 3,000 receiving yards in high school in Foley, Ala., and scored 52 touchdowns.

Wait a year: Omar Hunter, DT, Florida. Gators fans were no doubt happy when he signed after decommitting from Notre Dame. Hunter, the No. 2 defensive tackle in the country from Buford High, is huge (6-2, 290) and quick, but give him a year to get used to the SEC before comparisons to Courtney Brown begin.

Biggest surprise: Joe Adams, ATH, Arkansas. The Arkansas native committed to USC, but a late push by Petrino secured his signature. Although he had just a few weeks to recruit, Petrino did a great job keeping the talent in his new state.

Who will be happiest in three years? We’re going to do the cheap thing and say it’s a tie between Ole Miss and Auburn. New Rebels coach Houston Nutt has given fans a reason to believe with a class that features a 5-star recruit and several 4-star guys. Former coach Ed Orgeron was a good recruiter, but Nutt is a proven coach. Auburn got some quick players who should fit nicely into the new spread offense.

RATING THE SEC

  1. Alabama

  2. Georgia

  3. LSU

  4. Florida

  5. Auburn

  6. Arkansas

  7. South Carolina

  8. Tennessee

  9. Ole Miss

  10. Miss. State

  11. Kentucky

  12. Vanderbilt

Uh….Doug….Julio is from the Mobile area, I believe. He also has a lot more class in his ring finger than Irvin ever hoped to have. This comparison is laughable.

I hate to compare Auburn to Gay Tech, but when you’re changing system’s, you don’t always really need guys that are superbly talented; you need role players. I agree that Ole Miss and Auburn will probably both look back on 07 as a surprisingly good recruiting year despite the “experts” ranking bammer and ugay higher.

It’s not how much money you have, it’s what you do with it that matters.

Keep reaching for your “role players” ….why don’t you try recruiting in state - oh yea - SABAN dominated you.

Of the 33 signees for BAMA, 16 were offered by the barn.

Of all the 29 or 30 signees by the barn, ZERO were offered by Bama.

Saban owns Tuberville.

Tub’s comment, “We can win championships w/ this class,” is one of those statements that if ya keep sayin’ it ya might start believin’ it. Tub is kidding the “Auburn toilet paper in the town square nation”. If any program in the league is heading downward, it’s the W/E’s, Tigers, P’men, whoever they are.

Saban’s record vs. Tuberville while head coach at LSU: 2-3

Saban’s record vs. Tuberville while head coach at bammer: 0-1

Saban’s overall record vs. Tuberville in the SEC: 2-4

Yep, Tide, you’re right… Li’l Nicky Saban sure “owns” Tommy Tuberville!!!

Just to clear some things up Julio Jones is from FOLEY, AL not Gadsden and not Mobile.

Auburn’s recruiting class is pathetic compared to the rest of the SEC. Their best recruit was an afterthought for UGA and only one recruit is ranked in the top ten at his position by ESPN. Blame it on coaching changes if you want but the fact is next year is a rebuilding year for AU and getting used to the spread.

Houston Nutt stole Auburn’s prized RB recruit Enrique Davis. I heard that Petrino is asking the NCAA if Mallete can play immediately as opposed to sitting a year like the rule book says.

By heeldawg

February 7, 2008 5:37 AM | Link to this

No question, Saban brought in a great class. Georgia’s and Florida’s classes were solid, too, as usual. Still, I think that the jobs that Petrino and Nutt did were remarkable. Orgeron was brought in at Ole Miss because of his recruiting ability, but he couldn’t coach. Nutt can, and he’ll make good use of a solid recruiting class. Petrino, by getting Mallett (who was granted the right not to sit out a year by the NCAA, by the way) and Joe Adams, has the foundation for his future teams at Arkansas in place.

Interesting in their absence: South Carolina (a year after Spurrier’s “landmark” class, the Gamecocks aren’t even on the radar screen) and Tennessee (is there a perception that the program is on the decline? Perhaps…).

The things that set the SEC apart from other conferences are the coaching and the talent. Looks like the talent will still be the nation’s best for at least another four years…

It amazes me how Bama fans on these blogs CONTINUE to talk she-ite as if they’ve actually accomplished something. Are you kidding? Congrats…Scout.Com ranked your class #1. Awesome! You’ve done it! Saban has saved the program!

I thought you Bama fans were legally required to refrain from pointing fingers and/or boasting about ANYTHING college football-related b/c: 1) You lost to Lousiana Monroe 2) You haven’t beaten Auburn since Bush was liked and 3) Your biggest game of 2007 was in April.

Please, piper down until you actually do something on the field. Fooling yourself into believing that things are automatically on the up-tick b/c of yesterday’s recruiting journalism award is a bit dangerous. There’s not alot of difference on paper between your class and the #25 ranked class. It’s all about the guts of the program that will yield any kind of results from these kids.

Tennessee’s recruiting class was horrible this year. I think the fact that we had to replace so many coaches on offence had a lot to do with it. Time that would have been spent recruiting was instead spend finding new coaches. Plus we lost two of our best recruiters (Trooper Taylor and Cutcliffe).

That’s odd: Most of the people who do this full time for a living rank Florida’s class above Georgia’s, and don’t even rank LSU in the top 10.

Homerism is understandable, though.

I am quite curious as to why so many fans seem upset with BAMA fans being excited about this years signing class. I have read many recruiting blogs on this site and have heard UGA fans pumping up their great class (which they should) but BAMA fans do it and all the sudden you guys go on the attack. When Richt took over UGA, the Dawgs were a middle of the pack team in the SEC and strong recruiting classes and good coaching built that program into a very solid one in a matter of a couple of years. I may be mistaken in my thinking, but it seems that is exactly what UA is trying to do with their program. They are getting the best players who will help make them a competitive team year in and year out. Last year Saban brought in a top 10 class and redshirted all but 4-5 guys. This year he brought in the #1 class and will likely do the same. I think you will see Julio Jones, Burton Scott, Jerrell Harris, Mark Barron and Star Jones get playing time and the rest of the class will likely be redshirted. That will help developed talented depth which BAMA was lacking big time this year. So, as a die hard BAMA fan, you will have to excuse us for our excitement of our coaching staff trying to do the same thing that UGA, LSU, UF and others are trying to do and that is to compete for championships.

To: SECisFootball - - Yes, you make good points and I agree with you. You should be excited that Saban & Co. have recruited well the past couple of years. The true and only meaningful result of that will come in the next year & after (once these recruits start to play, etc). Not rocket science, but it appears that some folks don’t realize this.

I think the negativity to Bama fans on this site is geared more toward those mighty blogfaces that are claiming ridiculousness (ie “Saban owns Tuberville” “AU is on the decline”, etc) seemingly based on this year’s recruiting class. As a self-respected AU and college football fan, comments like these are not appreciated. I support blog comments that are insightful (as your was) which provoke thought and interesting responses. A good majority of the BAMA submissions have been everything but. Non-partisan speak…the whole UGA vs GT nonsense is pretty lame too.

You keep doing that and Bobby Lowder will be driving the U-Haul to your house, you pompous a*. Keep reveling in you six wins while the Tide was on probabtion because it’s about to end. Let’s see. The last NC Georgia won was during Jimmy Carter’s or Reagan’s term, and I believe that Auburn shared a NC with Ohio State during Eisenhower’s. 1957. Pretty long dry spell, I’d say. Lot’s of history and tradition there. Alabama now has a great coach who can out recruit just about anybody out there. Bama is on the way back to the top, our rightful position, and the rest of you chumps can’t do a thing about it. Roll mf Tide.

I love recruiting and its hoopla but then again it’s very overrated. How many times did we see these five star players come in and not do squat in their college career. Willie Williams, Whitney Lewis, and so on and so forth. But guys like Julio and A.J. will not be those guys. They’ll be the class of the SEC over the next years till they both leave after their junior year to the NFL. The game in Athens will be interesting to see these two square off. Oh and gator fans, get over yourself, you guys are ranked in front us in two polls but behind on scout.com. It just proves recruiting is overing. 4th on espn, 4th on rivals and 11th on scout, point proven.

Hey Auburn fans stop listening to those Alabama backwood simpletons. They are so stupid they don’t even know their stupid. Tommy T will hold up 7 fingers in T town this November. And this is from a UGA fan!

Ala. and Auburn have taken their turn beating UT. Unfortunately, it looks like they will continue. But it is noteoworthy that Urban Meyer has become mortal. Tebow is still superman and fun to watch play - except in Sept. when he runs over the Vols.
