Tech completes 20-man class

Defensive back Rashaad Reid of St. Augustine, Fla., and offensive lineman Phil Smith of Jesuit High School in Tampa became the first two members of Paul Johnson’s first Georgia Tech football signing class Wednesday morning.

The 20-member class featured AJC Super Southern 100 offensive lineman Omoregie Uzzi. The Jackets signed several players who originally committed to other schools, but Tech also lost a few committed players, including Anderson, S.C., defensive back Lee Butler, who chose Duke on Wednesday.

Defensive end Antonio Wilson of Columbia High School, who originally committed to Vanderbilt, signed next. Wilson, a basketball player, played only one season of high school football.

Speedster Embry Peeples from Orlando’s Dr. Phillips High School became the first signee at the slotback or A-back position, a key role in Johnson’s triple option offense, which uses two A-backs and a B-back, or fullback.

Flowery Branch’s Jaybo Shaw, who originally committed to Middle Tennessee State, became Johnson’s first quarterback signee. Shaw ran a similar offense in high school.

Other signees:

— Daniel McKayhan, a wide receiver from M.L. King High School who also returns punts and kickoffs, originally committed to Furman and then Memphis before signing with Tech.

— Nick McRae of Dublin will begin his Tech career at center but could also play guard.

— Defensive back Kamaron Riley from Hawkinsville signed next. Riley, a long-armed athlete, could play safety or cornerback at Tech.

— Steven Sylvester became the second linebacker from Union Grove High to sign with Tech in as many years. Sylvester joins Kyle Jackson at Tech.

— Malcolm Munroe from Miami’s Coral Reef High comes from an athletic family. His brother started games at defensive back for Florida.

— Parade All-American Marcus Wright of San Antonio, who originally committed to Tulsa, became the second slotback to sign.

— Cooper Taylor, whose father played quarterback at Tech, signed out of Marist to play defensive back.

— Wetumpka, Ala., High School’s Tevin Washington is another dual-threat quarterback and another of many Tech signees who plays basketball as well as football.

— Richard Watson, a big, physical B-back, signed to play the running back position that lines up behind the quarterback. Jonathan Dwyer, Quincy Kelly, Luke Cox and Trevor Bray are current players at that position.

— Defensive back Jon Lockhart, who has started since his freshman year at Blountstown, Fla., High, had a 41-inch vertical jump, highest in the nation at the Scout.com combines.

— Tech reached back to California, former home of current New York Giants player Gerris Wilkinson, to sign defensive back Brandon Leslie from Fresno’s Edison High School.

— Hilliard, Ohio, linebacker B.J. Machen is the son of a Stanford football player. Machen came to Tech’s 2007 spring game and dropped off a highlight tape; coaches liked what they saw.

— Quentin Sims of Colerain High in Cincinnati will begin as a receiver at Tech but could wind up as a slotback.

— Auburn and Alabama made late pushes to recruit T.J. Barnes of Enterprise, Ala., High School, a huge and talented defensive tackle who signed with Tech.

The top three reasons they chose to go to gt. (3) Easier academics. At gt you can major in IM like most of the FB players do. (2) You will get more playing time at gt. (1) You can help contribute to gt’s tradition of quality loses and enjoy the annual trek to the Humiliation Bowl

Tech will get very few Top 25 or even Top 100 recruits…that’s just the way it is. The important thing is, does Tech sign the guys who can make Paul Johnson’s schemes work? If so, then it’s a good class…IMHO, of course.

ACC Fan, given the impact some true freshman (Trinton Sturdivant, Rennie Curran, etc.) had on the team in 2007, I’d say last year’s class was exceptional in retrospect. I’d take quality over quantity anyday and it looks like this year we’ll get both.

I will admit that UGA is by far recruiting higher rated talent. What will you do w/ it? What will Paul Johnson do with his? Nah, being a UGA fan is fun these days. I typically look at all the blogs and rarely post on any but the UGA side. Congratulations Tech on a respectable class for 1st year coach Paul Johnson. I enjoyed reading where you QB recruit Shaw is ready to “beat Georgia.” I have to say that seeing fire like that in a player is exciting for the rivalry.

To Tech948, I hope you weren’t refering to GT as the toughest school in the state. If you are, I am guessing that you have forgotten about your in-town neighbor, Emory. By far that is the toughest school in the state of Georgia, followed by Mercer with UGA and Tech right behind.

To all you UGA fans so impressed with this year’s recruiting class:

In 2004, your class was rated #6, and GT was not even ranked. When this class was rerated in 2007, your #6 class dropped to #17, and GT was ranked #13.

Like it has been said before, you always get these great recruiting classes, but never win an NC.

To BobinBuford,

As long as it has been for either school to win a NC, I don’t think it is the place for you or any other GT fan to come out and throw that stat up. 1990 for Tech, 1981 for UGA. If that is going to be fair game the so is SEVEN-IN-A-ROW. It definately has more clout in arguments about recient acheivements.

Dawg19, Sorry but you spelled definitely incorrect as well, but who’s counting errors. I agree 7 in a row hurts, but I was still wetting my bed when UGA won a national title. I was at the Citrus Bowl Game in 90 and remember it well. At least my memories are fresh. Anyways with the talent you recruit every year you should have more, but you don’t. UGAy posters (this is not directed at the reasonable UGA bloggers) – I will be the fist to admit that UGA gets higher rated recruits. I bet UGA hasn’t had a class rated lower than tenth in the country for many years. Tech, other than last year, hasn’t had a high ranked class (maybe ever). So you guys are all big and bad. We have no shot. On paper, we should never win, but yet we’ve won about 39% of them…how is this?

gatech92, you’re actually bringing up the fact that you only win 39% of the time??? That’s priceless.

Tornado - The simple fact is that our schedule year in and year out is significantly more difficult playing in the SEC. That’s a big reason why Florida State won so many titles - one big OOC game and then the national championship game with hardly any other stumbling blocks along the way.

Fair guys with class. Give them credit, CMR is obviously a hell of a coach, a good recruiter, with a really fine staff. We need to step it up. I am confident with CPJ we can and will. With CPJ as coach, we probably would have won 2 of the last 4. We have had the talent. I want a rivalry back. I think we’re gonna have one. But, painful as it is, we have to do it first. Go Jackets!

Comon Geoff. Why aren’t other SEC schools using that excuse. LSU has 2 titles, Alabama 1, Tennesse 1, FL 2, Auburn close to 1. They seemed to achieve the status everyone wants. I agree that SEC as a whole is usually more competitive, but championship teams win no matter who it is they are playing. UGA just makes excuse after excuse. I will say Richt is not an underachiever, but can he overcome the UGA hump? I guess anything is possible.

By GeoffDawg

February 6, 2008 1:59 PM | Link to this

Tornado, you’re making my point for me. The SEC is a league full of national title contenders every year. Georgia’s knocked on the door a couple times during Richt’s tenure but hasn’t gotten quite there yet. With that kind of gauntlet, CMR has done extremely well so far.

Geoff, When did UGA ALMOST make the NC. End of season rankings mean squat. At the near end of the season nobody put UGA in the title votings. I agree you guys have a shot this coming season, and if you win out, you deserve. Just remember that you have to play 8 ranked teams this year according to preseason rankings, w/ about 4 on the road. Like I said if you pull it off congrats.

Don’t think that GT can’t win another one in CPJ’s tenure. We have a little more work to get there though.

Alright tornados, you seem reasonable so don’t take this personally but have you been hiding under a rock these last few months? Georgia would’ve played for the title this past season if they hadn’t inexplicably dropped in the BCS rankings after Missouri and WV both lost. They also went 13-1 in 2002. There have been many recent seasons where that would’ve been good enough to go to the title game.

Dawg:

My comment was about the way you UGA fans talk about how great their recruiting class is for 200(fill in any year here). It is a fact that looking back on the 2004 recruiting class that 4 years down the road, the Tech recruits turned out to be better college players.

As for 7 in a row, we all know that the coaching of Chan Gailey probably contributed to those losses. Paul Johnson will not make those same mistakes.
