Every weekend since his junior season, Dawson Zimmerman drove to Prattville, Ala., to work with respected kicking coach Mike McCabe. The Brookwood senior understood his potential and was intent on nurturing it.
His diligence was rewarded when his performance as a junior catapulted him to the No. 2 punter in the country and attracted the attention of Auburn, Harvard, Maryland, Virginia, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest and North Carolina.
Shortly after visiting Clemson in June 2007, he received a text message to call the Tigers’ coaching staff. When he did, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Zimmerman, a 3.8 GPA student with a 2040 on the SAT, was offered a scholarship, and he accepted right then. He was set to sign today.
“Field position is a big part of football and Dawson was great for us,” said Brookwood coach Mark Crews during the Broncos’ run for a third straight Region 8 AAAAA championship. “When you have a punter and kicker like Dawson, he’s a weapon.”
