Buckeyes get Gainesville’s Wells

Ohio State could have two Georgians starting on its defensive line when the Buckeyes open their season in 2008.

Keith Wells, a 6-5, 232-pound defensive end from Gainesville, committed to the Buckeyes on Monday. He said he hopes to start at end, beside defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, who starred at Peachtree Ridge.

“I definitely want to play [and not redshirt],” said Wells, who said he has qualified academically, and hopes to major in mechanical or civil engineering.

Heyward hosted Wells when he visited Ohio State’s campus in Columbus last year.

In the end, Wells said Ohio State is the type of school with the type of athletics department that made him feel comfortable.

“It was a mixture of stuff,” Wells said. “It wasn’t just one thing. Ohio State was one of those schools that you had to look for one thing that was wrong.”

Notre Dame, and Tennessee were among the schools that were interested in Wells.

“All of the big dogs were in here last week,” Gainesville assistant coach Todd Wofford said. “[Phil} Fulmer and Charlie Weis and all those guys. [OSU’s Jim] Tressel, he’s someone else. He stands out a little bit different than the rest.”

Heyward started at DE, not DT.

The guy he replaced broke his leg in the first game last season. He’ll be back, and OSU’s top five DTs are back as well.

In sum, you could say the entire DL is back as guy who broke his leg will replace Vernon Gholston, who’s leaving to go pro.

Wells is not going to start, but he may play as a freshman.

The wildcard could be moving Heyward to DT, which is possible.

GeoffPup, OSU has played in Three National Championship since 2002. How many have you been in? Someone must think were pretty decent. You have one good year and you talk smack. I haven’t heard of the bulldogs since Herschel Walker played. Its about being consistent, which you wouldn’t know anything about.Since we were so lowly this year, why didn’t you guys jump us in the poll to be in the National Championship game?

JJBuckeye, We didn’t jump osu in the polls because as everyone knows it was pure human opinion politics. We got stuck playing Hawaii which turned out to be the worst team we played all season. The SEC championship game was a much better contest than your teams feeble attempt to beat LSU. Yes looking back we should have jumped ahead you.

I guess if KW wants to go and play in the most overrated conference in college football than go ahead, have at it. To play for a team that was blown out in the last 2 championship games is pure sign of a weak conference and an overrated team.

And while we are on the topic, how many times do we have to watch the Suckeyes get their a*ses kicked in the title game? Although I guess it makes sense when you think about it, I mean how can Ohio St. win a title game when they don’t have their MVP on the field a man by the name of Mr. Terry Porter. For those of you who don’t remember or don’t know, Terry Porter was the ref in the 2002 title game against Miami who threw the mystery flag on the Miami cornerback 10 minutes after the play was over when it was not even a penalty. When you have refs like that giving you title games it makes sense why the Suckeyes cannot win it on their own. Have fun Keith and remember, it’s cold and ugly in Ohio come November!!

Does anyone care to remember OSU lost 8 starters on Defense in 2006, and 9 more in 2007. or the fact that OSU was supposed to be rebuilding in 2007? Or the fact that OSU (the fourth best version under Tressel) outgained LSU (the best version in 25 years) by 25 yds in a game they purely GAVE away.

I’ll admit, OSU has no bragging rights unless they beat USC this year. But if they do…maybe 3rd time is a charm.

But hey, I’m sure people are tired of seeing OSU’s prominence, much like people are tired of seeing the Yankees in the contention every year. But Georgia fans, don’t get all excited about 1 good year. Mark Richt is a great man that I respect, but GA is 2nd tier.

When you win 8 national championships and 7 heisman trophies and have the 2nd most players of any school currently in the NFL (Miami is 1)start talking. But obviously OSU is a no good program.

I guess it would be cool if it didn’t seem like you SEC fans didn’t seem to care about us so much. We don’t care, nor do we think about you guys as much. There seems to be a bit of jealousy you guys have towards us, that we don’t share. And for the record, we are .500 against SEC teams lifetime, and 0-9 in bowl games….but who cares, we keep going to championship games, you guys keep wondering if you have waht it takes to get to the SEC championship game.

first off the 0-9 vs sec teams is in bowl games where it seems 100% of the time it is usually a home game for the SEC - i dont see any SEC team ever leave the SOuth for anything - when was the last time georgia left the south - secondly i dont understand UGA opening their mouth when in fact a) the lost to South Carolina b) they didn’t win their division c) they didn’t win their conference - if you want to open your mouth PLEASE STOP LOOSING

If you’re not a Florida or LSU fan, you really don’t have much to say. Fans of teams that actually win will tout their team. Everyone else talks about how my conference is better than your team/conference. Me personally, I’m looking forward to the day when a conference puts on a helmet and plays in a football game. Until then, I guess I’ll have to settle for watching actual football teams line up on the field. And Congrats Georgia fans— your team looked good beating up on Hawaii. Next year, try not to lose two games in-conference and actually make it to the SEC championship game. Maybe then you’ll have a shot at the tOSU in the NC game.

Good luck to Keith Wells! We are thrilled to have your services in Buckeye country.

Dear SEC fans. OSU has choked 9 times in bowls against the SEC. Jim Tressel was a part of three of those teams if you count the Cooper team that lost his rookie season at OSU. The Big Ten actually has a winning record in Bowls against the SEC. OSU is actually .500 lifetime against the SEC.

Enjoy your BS and keep hating Ohio State because we are CONSISTANTLY great and you are OCCASIONALLY great. We were supposed to be middle of the pack this past year after placing our whole roster in the NFL the previous year. We made it to the NC a year EARLY because the rest of you sucked and couldn’t win your games. End of story.

I don’t get it -how can GA think they are a national powerhouse they never play a game out of the south. In last 5 years they have played as far north as Kentucky and as far west as Louisiana-at best they are a regional powerhouse and they didn’t even play in their league championship game.

By Boston

I don’t understand why GA fans are so concerned about Ohio State-You can’t be a national powerhouse if you never play a game out of the South. In Last 5 years GA has not played a game North of Kentucky or West of Louisiana including bowls. Play a game outside your region, win your own league championship or just hate teams within the range of your pick up trucks.

If the Sec is so good why is it that they will not play any Big 10 teams?? Ohio State has been trying to get games with Sec but they well not play a home and home the Pac 10 and Acc,Big12 will but not Sec. They well play in the bowls were they are the home team and have all the Sec so they are not that great if they don’t go from home and play up North or East and to the West.

BGdawg,

Your right the weather sucks.UG probably did not offer because Keith made it clear he was not staying at home. As far as sitting the bench, Tenn seemed to think otherwise and if I remember correctly they spanked your rear. UG had a great year but if you don’t win your conference then don’t cry about deserving to be in the NC game.(Remember Michigan last year)

And as far as people saying OSU should not be allowed to play in the NC game. I remember the Gators getting spanked in the 2001 Sugar Bowl. Maybe they should not be allowed to play in that. Give me a break.

School Interest Level Offer? Attended Camp? Visit Date Signed LOI? Ohio State Verbal Yes 12/07/2007
Auburn No Interest Yes 12/14/2007
Florida No Interest Yes 01/25/2008
Florida State No Interest Yes None
Miami (Fl) No Interest Yes None
Notre Dame No Interest Yes 01/31/2008
Tennessee No Interest Yes

Not sure if Uga did offer, but I’d take an offer from the above schools any day before looking at an offer from georgia. Out of the above schools, only Auburn hasn’t won a national championship within the last 20 years— however they’ve been better than Georgia over the last 10 years. You don’t need to trash wells or tOSU to console yourself. Face it: Ohio State has more championships than Uga, has sent more players to the NFL (past and present), has more Heismans and is a better school academically. What more could you ask for?

BGDAWG,

In case you missed the point, the 500 record is in the regular season. 0-9 in bowl games of course those games are always somewhere in the SEC backyard. I wish they would rotate the bowls games to the midwest and then back down south. The SEC and USC/UCLA playing basically a home game is riduclous. OSU would have loved to play LSU in Ohio.

OK, For all of the SEC fans out there, How many SEC West teams were ranked in the BCS top 25….?

1 (one), LSU…thats it Combined the SEC had almost exactly as many ranked teams in the BCS as the Big 10 this year. Many of them ended up ranked higher than the next closest SEC team.

Also….how would any SEC team win a national title without a head coach from Ohio. Florida and LSU both have head coaches from Northeast Ohio area. As does Nebraska(Bo Pelini, LSUs defensive coordinator this past year) Oklahoma (Bob Stoops), Kansas (Mark Mangini), Missouri (Gary Pinkel),Ohio State (Jim Tressel), Illinois (Ron Zook),

Ohio State did lose two national championship games in a row to teams from the SEC, But then Michigan also beat Tennessee in its bowl game. In the big picture the SEC is just top heavy. Stop making the entire conference out to be so dominant. Georgia was my home state in 1980, the last time the Bulldogs won a title. Buckeyes have at least been in the title game 3 times in the last 6 years. Ill bet Ohio State makes it back to the National Title game before Florida or Georgia..
