Chamblee’s Uzzi commits to Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Chamblee offensive lineman Omoregie Uzzi pulled the trigger on a commitment to Georgia Tech around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Uzzi chose the Jackets over Virginia.
“He has officially committed to Tech,” Chamblee coach Jim Showfety confirmed late Saturday evening. “He just left them a voice mail message. He called the Virginia coaches earlier tonight and told them the news.”
Showfety figured several days ago that Uzzi was on the brink of a commitment to Tech.
“I think he kind of made up his mind earlier this week, but really didn’t have the right time to tell them and couldn’t coordinate his phone calls after he lost his cell phone,” Showfety said.
“I think he pretty much knew on Tuesday that he’d commit to Tech, but he felt bad because Virginia was coming down here on Wednesday to make one final push and he didn’t want to be impolite.”

Oconee County QB Mettenberger will be a Bulldog

Athens — Georgia didn’t have to go far to get its quarterback of the future.
Oconee County’s Zach Mettenberger, who has been around the program for more than a decade and who lives in neighboring Watkinsville, committed to the Bulldogs on Saturday night.
He is the fifth commitment in the 2009 class.
“It was definitely like a lightning-bolt thing,” Mettenbeger said. “I had thought that I was going to take some visits and commit in the spring. But I decided I just wanted to do it and get it out of the way so I could concentrate on my senior season.”
The 6-foot-5, 205-pound quarterback was rated as one of Rivals.com’s top 50 juniors. He also had offers from Boston College and Florida State. But ultimately it came down to being an environment where is comfortable.
“Really it was the players,” Mettenberger said. “I have know a lot of those guys for a long time. And this is my home. This is where my family and friends are.”
Mettenberger has had a relationship with Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo since 1999. Mettenberger went to a passing camp last summer that was run by Mike Bobo’s father, George. Zach’s mother, Tammy, works in the football office but did not apply any pressure on her son’s when it came to recruiting.
“I want it to be Zach’s decision,” Tammy said back in November. “I just told him I don’t want him to go more than eight hours away because I want to be able to make it to all the games.”
The Georgia campus is six miles away from the Mettenberger’s home.
Georgia will most likely take one more quarterback in the 2009 class. That could be Tom Savage (6-4, 220) from Cardinal O’Hara in Springfield, Pa. Georgia might not take more than 15 players in its 2009 class.

Will Allen honor his commitment to Georgia?

Dwayne Allen, a tight end for Terry Sanford High in Fayetteville, N.C., confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution today that he has scheduled a recruiting-related announcement on Monday.
He declined further comment.
Allen, who originally committed to Georgia as a junior in Dec. 2006, will announce if he is sticking with his longtime plan to sign with the Dogs on national signing day on Wednesday.
If he backs out of his commitment to Georgia, he is expected to choose between Clemson, Florida State and Virginia Tech.
“He just wants to make sure he feels comfortable with his decision,” Terry Sanford coach Wayne Inman told Rivals.com on Friday. “To be honest, I think it’s 85 percent for Georgia right now.”

Fulmer, Weis visit Gainesville’s Wells
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Gainesville turned into a hot spot for college coaches earlier this week when Phillip Fulmer of Tennessee and Notre Dame’s Charlie Weis flew into town to court the Red Elephants’ **Keith Wells.”
“I’ve been coaching 11 years, and Wednesday was about the craziest day I’ve ever seen,” Gainesville assistant coach Todd Wofford said. “I’d never seen a [college] team do what Tennessee did. They sent just about their whole staff to our school and they were there from 8 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. It was all day.
“It was like they were Keith’s shadow. Two coaches would walk him from class to class. Fulmer showed up about 2 p.m. They stayed for track practice then went to his house.
“Then about 7:30 p.m., Charlie Weis showed up at his house.”
Wells, who is on a recruiting visit to Notre Dame this weekend, is scheduled to announce his college choice on 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
“It’s really between Ohio State and Tennessee,” Wofford said. “Keith is just checking out Notre Dame. He really didn’t think Tennessee was going to be in the mix until he went up there two weeks ago.”
Wells, a defensive end, had originally committed to Florida State in August. He backed off that commitment last month.
