Tucker’s Lipscomb leaning toward Auburn commitment
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/26/08
Tucker defensive back Neiko Lipscomb is expected to commit to Auburn early next week.
Lipscomb had been considering Auburn and Georgia. But an official visit to Athens this weekend didn’t materialize.
“He didn’t [visit Georgia],” Tucker coach Franklin Stephens confirmed early Saturday morning.
“He’s probably going to commit to Auburn.”
Georgia apparently does not have a scholarship remaining to offer Lipscomb.
“I think that’s what has transpired,” Stephens said.
The first-year Tucker coach said there’s not much difference between the two programs.
“Auburn and Georgia are both in the SEC and have a similar situation to offer a kid,” Stephens said. “He’s choosing between two powers in the SEC.”

Sorry UGA had no schollies remaining for Neiko… He’s a baller…
I believe players (or mainly their HS - HC’s) should look at the situations that have transpired this year where many elite players have waited too long to commit & get left out to dry, so to speak…
Good luck on the Plains - ‘cept on that early November Saturday..

why do these kids wait so long to commit? What do they expect when they wait this long? i agree with Mark Richt in that sign the ones that commit the earliest and only offer those good enough to play for you. Man it seems as if Mark Richt can’t do much wrong in Athens. I just hope he doesn’t leave Athens. At least not for another 20 years. How long do you folks think he’ll be here?

Who are the people giving these kids advice? I hope this year, which has been worse that what I remember in the past, will teach these kids to make up their own minds early. After all, it is their own lives. There always seems to be someone else for their own selfish reasons, have their hand in the cookie jar. I wish Neiko the best, and hope to see him twice next year, once in November, and once in December. It would be fun to beat Auburn twice in one year.

bo, “At Auburn, complete with a village idiot”. I did`nt catch the name you are referring too?? If Julio Jones WR, #1 pick in country choose UGA next week Coach Richt would say “no room at the Inn” Your thinking is daydreaming? Their are scholly available at Georgia, CMR is waiting to see if one of the big 10 studs left say UGA.He had one for Omar Hunter.. Neiko has reason to wait just as others. He will help Auburn to NC in 2009. UGA like ALL schools have non qualifers, this year IS NOT a good year for grades overall..

Hey wmatlanta…what facilities are you talking about. Your stadium is only slightly better. Auburn has an indoor pratice facility, UGA doesn’t. We have a Fieldturf practice facility and a natural grass facility and a whole lot prettier town than Athens!

That knife cuts both ways. Maybe the athlete shouldn’t wait so long to commit, and maybe the schools should wait longer to make offers.
It should become very apparent to UGA that we have reached a level that we can expect the best of the best to commit. Sanders, Hunter, and now Lipscomb are very highly rated players that we basically had to turn away.
Next year we have to place a premium on the offers. We only have 13 scholarship seniors leaving. There’s no need to rush into filling up our slots. CMR should keep a few spots open for a final push. There’s no guarantee that every year will have the quality available this late in the game, but it would’ve been nice to have those open slots this year.

War Eagle, you are dead wrong. There are no more slots availabe at all or we would have offered Zebrie Sanders or Omar Hunter. We actually appear to currently be to slots over the 85 max schollies if all 25 sign. But 2 are likely to be drafted high in this years MLB draft. But bottom line is we have NO SPOTS available right now.

JayJay: When was the last time UGA played for the national title? When was the last time UGA went undfeated?Auburn didn’t play for the national title for one reason: The #1 and #2 teams ahead of them did not lose the entire season..and thus they stayed #1 and #2. It wouldn’t matter if it were Georgia, Alabama, LSU, etc etc. If USC and OU were #1 and #2 in the preseason and didn’t lose the whole season…none of those teams would move ahead of them either. And guess what? UGA’s stadium is slightly bigger, but certainly not better. I was in Athens, and it is a chore to even move about that place.

From the GREEN of the LIONS to the BURGUNDY/GOLD of the TIGERS to the RED/BLACK of the DOGS is a great path to the LEAGUE !!!! Wherever Neiko goes he’ll be solid. I hope it’s with UGA !!! recruiting early can be a two-edged sword if not done carefully.some athletes don’t come into their own until their senior year, some fade.richt seems to target the players he wants early, and doesn’t seem to care how many stars they have by their name.i think he looks for a certain type of player, one he thinks will fit in his program.i like this better than urban meyer’s shotgun approach, going after every five star on the board.a kid can be a great athlete and still not fit your program and the wrong kid can ruin a team.ben jones is still just a three star, but when he came to the uga camp this summer richt was so impressed he offered him a”ship”on the spot.sometimes finishing early can hurt a team in the recruiting ratings, big commetments late make a big splash and can give a team a boost up the charts, but as long as a coach finds the people he wants the ratings don’t matter.i think we fans worry about the team rankings on scout and rivals more than the coachs do.

It’s a shame we couldn’t land this kid but it’s far from a disappointment. We need to remember that we locked up our class real early this year and should be as pumped up in late january as we were in october when the class was still getting commits. I’m fine with Auburn gettinf this kid. Overall we’ve done much better this year with our recruits and will (at least on paper) be much better off down the road. We should be happy to be pretty much done for this year because our coaches are already aggresively going after our targets for ‘09. I think we underestimate how important that is. Recruits are commiting earlier now adays and being able to make a huge impression early in the game is essential to locking up stud recruits. I think we’ll see it pay off this spring/early summer when some more big names commit to the dawgs early. on. Now lets just try to hold on to what we have and finish this class strong. BTW, keep your fingers crossed, as Toby Jackson is visiting Southern Cal this moment. Hopefully he’s just taking a free vacation.

War Eagle, You don’t know jack. UGA does not have a scholly available and they didn’t have one for Omar. Being a lifelong Georgian whom graduated from Auburn, I can honestly say that Georgia is a great place, but it will never be as beautiful, or as special, or as wholesome, as The Loveliest Village On The Plains.” As for football, Auburn brings back as many starters as Georgia and with our new offense (remember Troy-but with better athletes) I expect we will put a spanking on a good Georgia team next fall!!

Come on now mel. Do you really think it’ll be a lop sided game next year. IMO it’s gonna be close. real close. I think the biggest factor will be what kind of shape uga is in as it closes out what could be the toughest schedule stretch in the country. LSU and Florida should definently take a toll on the dawgs heading into that game.

your a dumbass. ever heard of Hope Scholarship? Before Hope, UGA acceptance was identical to AU. Don’t use the Lottery to claim your institution is a place of higher learning. Hope combined with AU not allowing students to gain in state tuition after a year is the reason for UGA turning down applicants. I believe it was UGA who last got in trouble over some Basketball class where they asked athletes “how many points if you score behind the arc?”

Let’s face it, he waited much too late. He has no other choice except to go to Auburn because UGA is full.
It’s still a good football opportunity for him, but UGA gives athletes the chance to work for a meaningfull degree, while Auburn lets athletes slide through without class work. He’ll have to motivate himself to get something worthwhile out of Auburn other than a degree in weightlifting.

it looks to me like uga coaches go after specific players that not only have the athletics to compete, but the type of personality that will allow them to ‘fit in’ at georgia…whether that kid be 3 star or 5 star…
i mean…the coaches cant give all players the same attention…
and ill bet the ones CMR leans on commit to him…he seems to be such a straight shooter…not negative on anyone…and has a tremendous track record…
thats what coach dooley would focus on it seems…recruiting a young man and focusing on making him a georgia man…and winning football games in the process…
i cant wait for mark richt to win a national title…hes likely the most deserving coach of the award and attention given what he has done on and off the field of play…

Good fortune Niko, Omar and Zerbie,
It would have been nice if you had came to Georgia but it wasn’t meant to be. Auburn and as much as it pains me to say Florida are very nice higher institutions of learning just like UGA. Anyway it is what the student/athlete makes of his educational opportunity that matters.

Thank you for those nice words about the Dawgs being the Best Team at the end of the year. We will never know as they didn’t get a chance to prove it on the field same for Auburn in 2004 and in 1983 when in my humble opinion they were the Best Team as well. These things happen we had our chance and blew it when we lost to South Carolina and Tennessee. Auburn’s situation was different in 2004 as they did win all of their games but in 1983 it was very similar to GA this year in that Auburn lost their second game of the year to Texas and then went undefeated from that point forward but then got jumped after the bowls games and IMHO should have been voted # 1 and awarded the National Championship. Anyway best wishes next year except when we play you.

I am a big UGA fan since I was old enough to watch football. I attended and graduated from the school in the mid-eighties. I remember all of the great teams from that period.
Auburn and UGA have the oldest rivalry in the south but I used to think that it was built on respect but I am now beginning to wonder with some of the comments from both schools’ fans. Both schools have great fan bases and the schools have quality academic reputations. The bottom line on academics is you get out what you put in. UGA’s academic reputation has definately gone up due to the Hope Scholarship which keeps alot of the in-state graduates in state at UGA.
USMC Dawg - I have to echo what everyone else has said and say Thank You for your service to our country and please be careful and come back safe - God Bless You and the rest of the troops serving over in the Middle East

The UGA dawgs have been very kind to me on this blogs for several years. I dont have to defend Auburn or blast UGA. Both schools have quality education, outstanding Vet schools, business, plus Auburn has excellent engineering school who has produced several astronauts and NASA officials.UGA has political and business leaders state wide and Washington. Two Heisman Trophy winners , all Americans, NC and tons of Pro athletes in NFL, MLB, NBA and OLympias. I will never post any negatives toward my State University or Auburn where I received a rewarding degree, met people who have become life-long friends..My friends are UGA and Tech grads too..I am a Life Alumni Member,Auburn Football Letterman Club and season ticket holder for years…I love Auburn…Sanford Stadium is my favorite out of town stadium and Coach Dooley was my position coach at Auburn, a great coach and man.I pull hard for those dawgs except 2nd Saturday in November and hopefully first week in Dec this year.

You Auburn folks are kooky. Every post is slamming UGA, talking about no class and being idiots, etc. I suggest you back through this thread and read some of the posts by your fanbase and look in the mirror, you are describing yourself. Suckers.
I especially love the “I grew up a Georgia fan, but now Auburn is the best.”
For anyone that says Auburn is a better town than Athens, now you are just being stupid, at least make your arguments believable.

war eagle,i do know those gentleman, though not well,as they are older than myself.i knew bobby burgin pretty well,i don’t know if you played at auburn at the same time.i did get to meet bo,and he was very pleasant.i also remember the plantation club.it was just across the baker co.line, and was a part of a misspent youth!the club belonged to the late sheriff of baker co,they didn’t worry about ids,or being raided!thank you for being a class gentleman,i enjoy your posts.i have always thought of auburn as being like a second cousin.i have a farmer friend that is an auburn grad.he is sporting a big red G tag on the front bumper of his pickup for another year, due to our annual wager.i hope i don’t have to put that AU back on my car anytime soon!

I just got cell phone from former Auburn AD associate.., I ask him about Omar Hunter, Sanders scholarship situation…..When Omar decommited from ND he stated Florida or Auburn, Muschamp departed, it was Florida alone. UGA offered him a scholarship, but it seems it was Florida all the way.”you don`t tell one top player in your state, no room, full, sorry”.Sanders was looking for a southern school, Florida told him no scholly, but got Hunter and one other commit afterwards. He is going to FSU.Recruiting is like a jigsaw puzzle at times.

Wow…bunch of ignorant toothless redneck UGA fans on this board. It’s depressing. I’m live and was raised in Ga., folks. Show some damned class, please, if you can. Otherwise please keep your ignorant comments to yourself and quit embarassing our good school.

war eagle, that sounds about right,at the time hunter decommited uga had two soft conmmits.richt always warns his recruits that if they continue to visit other schools they risk losing their offers.i would not be shocked if uga gets a last minute signee,we don’t know what deals were made in private,i also would not be suprised if richt saves a slot or two for next year,i believe we will have only 13 seniors in 2009.i have no clue as to sanders, uga and uf recruited him hard just to turn him down at the last minute.he may wind up being a dog anyway, who knows?

shane#1,I know UGA wants Antoine McClain from Anniston, AL along with other schools. The word is UGA, Auburn and Bama. He might dodge Georgia when Lipscomb tactic gets out. I hope he goes to Auburn. You can move scholarships around like we had 3 2008 commits to start this semester, they can be taken off 2008. We had 5 non-playing dropouts, this open up some relief, plus non qualifers lish will probably be 2-4. Auburn was only going to commit 20, but the above changes open it up.We have 25 now. and will get a few more. We have only 13 seniors this year.

The select academic few who also are involved in football should eschew the “horse factories”, and accept ivy, or other highly respected colleges or universities, special talent offers which remain valid even if a debilitating injury occurs. This course of action would obviously be most beneficial to each person with such dual talent and enable them to be successful in life since the odds of obtaining a hugh financial windfall as an NFL player are similar to those of winning in a casino or the lottery, slim and none.

war eagle, uga had four enter this semister, not counting hebron, who signed last year, but had been suspended for two semisters.yes you can move scholarships around,or save them for next year.the problems occur when you bump against the 85 limit.that happened to uga last year.there was another juco lineman that had planned to enter early, but somehow the number of graduates had been overstated by one.i am sure richt would take steps to get the”right”man, but i think he is satisfied with this years class and wouldn’t mind being able to sign a couple more next year.uga will be looking at a short class then.recruiting is so complicated that i have been left scratching my head in wonder more than once!i must have taken a tag team of philidelphia lawyers to write the ncaa rules about recruiting, and it would take an army of them to figure those rules out!isn’t it amazing how lawyers always make more work for lawyers?

jayjay…a lot is two words (you’re stupid). You probably go to Georgia Perimeter and are one of the many UGA fans that could never get in there. I got into UGA and Auburn and chose to go out of state and pay 3x as much to go to AU. It is a lot nicer town. Athens has a lot of bars and thousands of alcoholics…look at the statistics of how many AU students are arrested nightly and how many UGA students are any you will see why AU is a nicer school. If you are an alcoholic, go to UGA…

From a USC alum from Los Angeles—
I’ve been to Auburn and Athens. Here’s my take. Athens is full of itself. The town wears all-black clothing, pretends we’re still in 1982, and the B-52s are somehow still relevant. The town has a few cool bars, but is dirty. Reminds me of Watts…
Auburn is a smaller town. Not as many bars, but the ones they do have are really cool. The people there are amazingly nice. Coming from CA— it’s unbelievable. When we won 20-0 a few years back, the students and fans congratulated us. The most classy fans I’ve ever been around.
The town itself is beautiful. It reminds me of a small European village in many ways. Out in LA, Auburn grads get respect. Great business school, but not good as USC. Georgia— great pharmacy school. That’s about it.
So, there you have an outside opinion. Auburn gets the nod.

Congrats to Auburn if they pick up Lipscomb. I think he will be a great player. I wish that all these comments could be a little more civil. It does no good to have all the trash talking. There is a time and place for that, and the decision of a high school kid is not that place. Good luck to him wherever he ends up, hopefully at UGA but if not then that’s alright.
Go Dawgs!

It’s funny how these blogs are supposed to be about FOOTBALL RECRUITING and they turn into who’s school is better and the best academics. BUT, Objective Fan, I will say this..if your son could not get in UGA..he IS a “dumbA#@!!!

max,i don’t know how smart you are,but you don’t keep up with the times.i don’t call a young person with a b+ hs average and a 1250 on the sat a dumb a*.not when they graduate from an private school with a strong academic reputation.i know of three such cases, and all three were the sons and daughters of uga alumni with a lot of pull at the university.two of these young people graduated from old miss, and one is doing well at fsu.uga has room for about half the students that apply there, because of the hope scholarship program.dr adams recomends that students that want to attend uga enter advanced studies programs,he says a 3.5 in and advanced class carrys more weight than a 4.0 in regular studies.i recommend that a student with less than a 4.0 and a 1300 sat score go to a jr college in the university system and get an associates degree.then they are guaranteed admission.many ga taxpayers do not like adam’s”harvard of the south” ambitions.we don’t like the fact that qualified ga residents are excluded while scholarships are given freely to students from other states and other countrys.we don’t feel that this is the role for a state chartered university.btw,if you prefer to discuss recruiting,i would suggest you do so,and omit the insults.

Hey ladyluckjc, if your intent is to question someone’s intelligence, don’t start by saying “your a dumbass.” The correct phrase would be “You’re a dumbass.” Your allbarn education is showing.

Auburn is one of the worst academic schools in the country. I just moved to Atl from California as well Mike, and I have no idea what you are talking about. UGA is light years ahead of Auburn college on every level.

I’m a Georgia fan who pulls for Auburn when they aren’t playing us. UGA and AU have the oldest and classiest rivalry in the Southeast. We should keep it that way.

Mike and USC Trojan… I’m also from Los Angeles, but have lived and traveled all over the world. I dated a girl at Auburn before I attended UGA, so I know about both schools pretty well. Here’s my take:
The people of Auburn are similar to those in Athens, however I would give them the nod in friendliness to Auburn. UGA students stick by a social code that was beyond my comprehension, “outsiders” were not as welcomed on that campus compared to other Universities I had spent time at. Fortunately I found enough GDI’s to make my tenure at UGA a blast. In terms of the downtown area… no question Athens blows Auburn away. Also there is NO WAY on earth you could compare Athens to WATTS. Athens is more artsy and bohemian in comparison to Auburn, but that’s one of its charms.
The beautification of UGA’s campus over the last ten years is remarkable and when you combine that with dramatically tougher entrance requirements, more and better academic facilities and teachers, UGA is now at or near the top of the SEC ranks. Only Vanderbilt or Florida can give UGA a run for its money.

Why the heck are you all arguing over which school is better? UGA is a public ivy league school, Auburn is an extension of the 12th grade. UGA has beaten Auburn in every sport every year over the last 10 years. NO ARGUEMENT. Go aruge with Bama fans.
