Report: Tebow illegally spoke to junior college recruit

Published on: 01/25/08

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow on Thursday entered the talk around Florida’s internal review of Coach Urban Meyer’s recruitment of junior-college wide receiver Carl Moore.

A December report in the Sacramento Bee indicates that Moore spoke with Tebow on the telephone the night the UF quarterback won the Heisman Trophy in New York. The report states Moore was at his family’s residence in California when he received the call.

“Carl!” Tebow yelled into the phone, according to the report. “I just won the Heisman! Come on down here (to Florida), and let’s win a national championship.”

The article states that the call was placed by Coach Urban Meyer, who then handed the phone to Tebow. Such a move would violate a portion of NCAA Bylaw 13, which states that college athletes cannot speak to recruits by telephone when directed to by their coaches.

If Tebow placed the call, or Moore phoned Tebow, or Moore phoned Meyer and asked to speak with Tebow, the call likely would be legal. The Gainesville Sun, citing a source on its Web site Thursday, reported that Meyer believes Moore called Tebow after the trophy presentation.

Moore, Tebow and Meyer could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The circumstances surrounding the call could become part of the internal review led by Florida senior associate athletics director for compliance Jamie McCloskey. McCloskey and his staff are determining whether Meyer committed any violations, most of which would be minor, as he recruited Moore to sign with the Gators. The recruitment of first-year UF gymnast Maranda Smith, Moore’s girlfriend, also falls under the review.

McCloskey said Tuesday that the review, which will include a check of telephone records and several personal interviews, might take a few weeks.

Imagine. Florida is putting together the #1 recruiting class, and players being heavily recruiting by other teams are not only committing to Florida, but raving about the campus, the academics and, yes, the coaches…and particularly raving about Urban Meyer (a coach who has put going to class, getting high grades, and graduating ahead of playing…imagine that). Now, all of a sudden, he become a cheat and a liar. If Meyer made the calls, they are only minor violations of NCAA rules. I don’t think Meyer intentially broke any rules, especially ones so minor. In America, I think we are incocent until proven guilty, right? I love Dawg fans her yell “liar” and “cheat” at a man who has done nothing but upgrade the standards and expections for Florida football players ever since he has arrived on campus (and many have left or have been asked to leave because they did not live up to those standards). It was reported in the Gainesville Sun that Meyer only called the girlfiend of the JC WR recruit (Moore) because that was the only phone number he had for Moore (since they live together). She says her only conversations with Meyer were greeting and goodbye statements, and that he never discussed anything else with her. Believe what you want. So far, the information given points to no wrong doing in that case. The Heisman ceremony call to Moore (again, another minor violation if it even did occur, which it has not been proven so yet)may have been initiated by Moore or Tebow. Information given to the investigation committee at Florida so far is indicating the Meyer did not make the call, but may have pass the call on to Tebow, which would not be a violation. And even if Meyer did, the rule is stupid! What hard does it do to call a prospect and say, “Hey, would you like to talk to the guy who just won the Heisman Trophy. Better yet, wouldn’t you want to play with him!” To call Meyer a “liar” and a “cheat” is to show complete ignorance of the kind of person Meyer is. And I am sure not of this has nothing to do with the fact that he, again, is proving to be the best recruiter in the country…and his rival coaches, and their loyal alumni, are in panic and looking for anything they can get their hands on to try to hurt Florida’s efforts on the recruiting trail.

Talk ourselves out of what? Unless they ban the Gator’s football team games next season, it matters none. I know you have to get your rocks off over this, but it really won’t matter when we knock you Dawgs off that “high” you all are on right now and I can’t wait either. You are right on a lot of points TampaGator. I hope that the infractions are limited to the one phone call but if they gave his girlfriend a scholarship for gymnastics just to get him on the football team, that’s pretty serious. If it were UGA, everyone except UGA fans would be all over it calling CMR a cheat too. So who is the National Champion wannabee again?

Tampa Gator:

What about the Florida player who committed a felony on a wednesday this season and not only played that Saturday night for the Gators against LSU, but did not miss a single down the rest of the season?

Meyer upgraded the standards of Florida football? What were they before? What does a guy have to do to be suspended for a game at FL?

At UGA this year, a 21 year starter was suspended 2 real games (one of which UGA lost) because he drank a beer in the parking lot of his apartment complex (off campus in the Summer)

A guy commits a felony at FL and misses no time whatsoever, another guy breaks the open container law at UGA and misses 2 important games….hmmmm…. standards.

By I-DOG

January 25, 2008 9:43 PM | Link to this

I agree that both of these violations are minor and there are so many rules that it is hard to keep up with them. I think a coach can get in trouble for giving a kid a lift to the bus station or from giving him too many t shirts. It gets a little crazy. Hardly evil acts.

However… According to USA Today, FL led the nation in off season arrests for drugs and violent behavior. To play Joiner after he committed a felony with no punishment “other than taking away his captain status” is akin to Penn State’s Paterno having the players that were arrested for assault… clean the stadium for an hour or two after a game.

They aren’t helping the players or the program in the long run. The team lost 4 games anyway and had a mediocre season… might as well have some integrity while doing that.

I’m no gator fan, believe me, but what USC has done is 10,000 times worse. They had agents paying Bush signing bonuses while he was still playing college ball, then suing him when he signed with other agents.

Where is justice? If a player in college ball needs to be amatuer, shouldn’t any games he plays in be forfeited if he receives money for his play? Didn’t LeBron James have to give back a few small items he got as freebies from a sporting goods store?

USC needs to forfeit a season and we need a new Heisman Trophy winner. Any votes for Vince Young???

I-Dog, you have no idea what you are talking about. Tony Joiner got arrested at the impound business and Meyer immediately suspended him that next morning and immediately took away his captainship! Two days later the charges were dismissed after the owner of the business said the entire thing was the fault of his employee. Joiner called the guy beforehand and told him he was coming. When he got their, and he happened to be African-American, the guy refused to open the gate for him. Joiner got mad and did a stupid thing. It was all a big misunderstand the owner said and he refused to press charges. Since he did not commit a crime, and not found guilty of anything, Meyer let him back on the team (but publicly admosished Joiner for his inappropriate behavior). He also never returned his captain status. He did not start the LSU game, and did not play until well in the game. Dorian Munroe played a large part of that game. Joiner never held the same position on the team after that with the team. What was Meyer supposed to do? Kick him off the team for a crime he was not found guilty of? He did not commit a felony! Get your facts straight before you start running your ignorant mouth. Meyer, in fact, has had only one player charged with a felony since he has been there (Ronnie Wilson, who fired a automatic weapon into the air to scare of people in a parking lot). He was kicked off the team until his case was resolved. Recently Wilson was tested by the university as part of his deal to possibly get back on the team if he was found innocent. He tested positive for drugs and Meyer immediately dismissed him permanently from the team. So don’t make stupid, ignorant comments about your knowledge of Meyer and his character. Your obviously have no idea what you are talking about. You let your love of your Dawgs cloud your thinking, or you lack the ability for rational or reasonable thought. Thank you.

Guess the dawgs long memories are only restricted to invoking series records since UGA has had more players arrested and in trouble in the past 5 years than UF has in the same amount of time. Neither team should be talking smack about the other in terms of players and off the field trouble.

By MisterT

You gator haters have GOT to be kidding me. This is absolutely ridiculous.

It would be OK if Tebow called moore, or Moore called Tebow, or Moore called UM, or Moore called UM and asked to speak to Tebow,or UM called Moore and then Moore asked to speak to Tebow, but if UM calls Moore and even as much as hands the phone to Tebow without Moore having requested to speak to Tebow…THAT’S YOUR VIOLATION! THAT IS ABSOLUTE INSANITY!

I would say so if it had been Richt passing the phone to Stafford while talking to a recruit. And I HATE uga with a holy white passion. That is just absolute insanity!

Sometimes the the letter of the law is absolutely ridiculous!

So you ugaers, think that in the excitement of winning the Heisman, that this was a punishable offense. But coaching your entire team break a rule in a game in order to get an advantage only deserves 15 yards and no reprimand from the SEC or NCAA. Now I have to admit, I found the move by cmr to be genious in the moment. But I am not the one whining that CUM (ooops that doesn’t work as well) borake a rule.

I think the cmr might have lost a bit of control of his team with his antics though. Note the recent off field discipline problems. I fear for cmr and some of the players (not uga THWG - hate the school but still like my friends and some of the players and coaches at uga) that the team may actually start heading down the path of the old U from which cmr hails.

To TampaGator: I am not here to bash UF. They won their last national title as fair-and-square as anybody else. However, some of your comments seem to be a bit over the top. Can you explain this statement? Tampa Gator said: “And I am sure not of this has nothing to do with the fact that he, again, is proving to be the best recruiter in the country…and his rival coaches, and their loyal alumni, are in panic and looking for anything they can get their hands on to try to hurt Florida’s efforts on the recruiting trail.”

Now, are you actually suggesting that “rival coaches” are somehow the cause of this investigation? Which coaches? How have these coaches secretly initiated this investigation without being named in published reports?

Hey Dawg Nation,

We need to shut the heck up. The lizards have kicked our a*******es for the last 17 years and now we think we have bragging rights because we won this past year. Once again we have players already in trouble with the law and the summer hasn’t even started; UGA has a pathetic graduation rate for its football team, one of the worst in the SEC; I believe the lizards and Vandy have the highest graduation rates. Who cares about some phone call, we better be loading the cannons for 2008! Go Dawgs!

UGAy finally wins one and they really talk smack. If you go back to 1950, including the Dooley years, UF still owns the illiterate mutts from Athens. 15 of the last 19 as well since 1990.

UGAy won a MNC in 80 when everyone knows Herschel was getting paid. They were lucky to win it that year. UF has won many more SEC titles and 2 MNCs since then. And UF does not lose to Vandy at home.

One of the biggest jokes in the world is that UGAy is an academic institution, when half of the FB and BB players cheat and many can’t read. Jan Kemp and Jim Herrick are proof of that.

So all you Dawg fans can boast all you want. Go to your $10 an hour jobs every day over at Arby’s and BassPro and bark into the night. You won one game, but UF owns you in every way.

we dawg fans should not gloat over this, ncaa rules are so complicated and they are such nit-pickers,it could happen to us at any time.the ncaa reminds me of the principals that expelled the kid for having cough drops{drugs},and the little girl that had the tweety bird key chain{weapon}.a person that can’t tell the difference in a plastic chain with ol’ tweety attached and a bicycle chain doesn’t have enough common sense to run a school!that being said there are some things about meyer’s recruiting that i don’t like.i think he should be more circumspect as to which players he recruits, looking at the scout services last spring it seemed that meyer was going after every five star player at every posistion.just because a player is rated five stars doesn’t mean he will be an asset to your program.signing guys that have personality problems or that cannot or will not do their classwork, then kicking them off the team will hurt him,or uf,sooner or later.it takes only one disgruntled former player to blow up a program.it happened with uga bball and it can happen to uf.i also don’t like the idea of a coach having his player making recruiting calls on the night he won the heisman.i think that was cheap and tacky on meyer’s part.that night was the highlight of the kid’s life,he should have been enjoying it with his parents and friends.if you are the kids coach, get your picture taken shaking his hand, let the two of you pose with the trophy, then get the hell out of the way.tebow won that award, not meyer!if my son had won the heisman he would be in my room with me,calling family, not in the coach’s room calling recruits!everything i have read about tebow up to now has been positive.i think he is a good, hardworking, christan, boy.tim’s dad should have told meyer to take a hike, then all this bad pr would have been avoided.

Before we worry about phone calls, what about that highly paid running back from USC (Reggie Bush) who the NCAA seems to care nothing about?

By ttown one

January 26, 2008 8:42 AM | Link to this

Meyer has done this for years. He has always been crooked—going back to Notre Dame and Bowling Green days.

Meyer had one recruit (Daryl Stonum)that was favoring Michigan. He told the RECRUIT that he had talked to (then coach) Carr and Carr said that the recruit would not fit in his offensive system. Meyer played the recruit to try to TRICK a kid in choosing to spend his next 4-5 yrs at a school that was lying to him. The recruit found out about the lies and chose Michigan with Rich Rodriguez as a new coach. The recruit basted UF and Meyer for lying to him.

Meyer has consistently lied to numerous recruits. Then, after they get to UF and do not “flourish” as he promised—he cuts their scholarships. He even throws his own coaches under the bus (check his post game loss interview after Michigan).

Meyer has consistently shown that he cares only about HIS ego. He has shown consistent violations on and off the field. The DA in Alachua County (Cerrone) is a UF booster and has a national champs ring that was “given” to him from Coach Meyer. Remember all the off the field incidents involving UF players just last year? They all got swept under the big rug at the DAs office. This DA is also an adjunct prof. at UF. You think all adjuncts get a national championship ring?

These are all facts, just look them up. Charlie Pell, Tank Black, and Urban Meyer are all names used in the same sentence: the sentence about UF and recruiting violations.

He does not trust recruits to make their own decisions and he tries to decieve them into thinking that UF is the ONLY school that “cares” about them. HE IS A SNAKE.

no 1-i am not ignorant,i know exploitation when i see it.if you guys can’t see something wrong in having a HEISMAN winning qb calling a juco transfer on the night he won the award then you have been blinded by hopes of another nc.no 2-tebow was involved in recruiting hunter.that was okay because hunter was on campus.but now he is making calls to california?if meyer wants tebow to recruit for him he needs to hire tebow as an asst coach and pay him 100 grand a year.no 3-the more i read about meyer the less i like him.i don’t think meyer is concerned with anything but himself.the future is now with him.that’s why he doesn’t use the red-shirt program like he should.meyer will not pay the price if florida gets busted, the school will.coaches just go on to the next million dollar job,it’s the schools that are left holding the bag.

I thank each and every UF graduate that resides in, pays taxes in, and of course can find a job in, the state of Georgia. To the people waiting for their UF tags, I thank you the most. gators fans are the biggest joke. a story pops up on an atlanta paper about college kids drinking and the gators jump all over it, calling uga “thug u” and that mark richt has lost control of his players, but an actual newsworthy story about ncaa violations (whether the rule is ridiculous or not, it is a rule) is reported and here come the excuses. the gators fans are quick to say that now it is coming out that they only said goodbye and hello when all original reports by the gf in question were that they spoke every day, sounds like another example of a florida violation getting swept under the rug. keep covering up your cheating gators, it will catch up. anyone who thimks meyer is an ethical recruiter is just a blind gator fan or isn’t paying attention. regarding the accusations by the same gator fans that this same activity goes on at georgia, give one example of even a rumor that cmr has ever recruited unethically. didn’t think so, i know a few local players recruited by mark richt and many other high profile coaches and every one of them stated that cmr is the only one who didn’t offer girls or money and instead based his recruiting on what the school had to offer and meeting with parents to let them know what kind of man he was. call me a georgia fan sticking up for my school and you will be correct but when you argue my stance how about using actual facts, i’ve heard the “thug u” and ugay and redneck stuff before. 42-30, 2 out of the last 4, the tide is turning! Gator Country Staff | January 20, 2008

Eugene Smith of Miramar is one of the best quarterbacks in the state of Florida in the recruiting class of 2009. Fast and elusive, the 6-3, 180-pounder comes from an athletic family. His cousin is one of the all-time greats at the University of Miami.

By Jason Pughe

“My cousin, Melvin Bratton, played for the University of Miami,” he said.

Eugene Smith carries on the family tradition. He led Miramar to a 7-4 record and a berth in the state playoffs. He was chosen Player of the Year in Broward County by the Sun-Sentinel and was invited to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Junior Combine in San Antonio.

A number of colleges have already stopped by Miramar to check out the tall, athletic quarterback with 4.6 speed.

“Today I had a workout at my school for Georgia’s offensive coordinator,” Smith said. “I’ve talked to Chip Kelly (Oregon OC and QB Coach) and a lot of coaches from other schools. I’m just really open-minded right now as far selecting colleges.”

Yes, this is from a Gator recruiting site but that shouldn’t matter since most of you apparently believe everything you read.

Go look in your by-laws and find out when coaches can have direct contact with juniors. His workout for and contact with UGA was a violation. Richt must be a cheat and a liar.

Since UGA fans are NCAA infractions zealots, you may want to self-report this gem:

“Today I had a workout at my school for Georgia’s offensive coordinator,” Smith said. “I’ve talked to Chip Kelly (Oregon OC and QB Coach) and a lot of coaches from other schools. I’m just really open-minded right now as far selecting colleges.”

This was reported on 1-20-08. Smith is a junior and it is a NCAA infraction to have contact with juniors right now, much less a private workout! POT KETTLE!

Folks, its more that just a phone call. Its the enticement violation by luring him to UF by Meyer arranging a scholly for this girlfriend. Knowing good and well he wasn’t planning on coming east without his girlfriend. That’s more than a minor secondary violation and the infraction committee is already investigating. The phone call by Meye and little Timmy were just icing on the cake.

By Skydawg

January 26, 2008 11:29 AM | Link to this

Folks, lets get a grip here. Its more than just a minor seconday violation. Its about the enticement violation. Meyer knew Moore wasn’t coming east without his little girlfriend in tow. So Meyer spoke to her several times, which isn’t permitted. Then arranged a scholly for her which isn’t permitted. All in hopes of enticing Moore to come to UF. That’s not a secondary violation if you’ll read by link from my post toward the top. The NCAA infraction committee is investigating and the UF committee is trying to beat them to the punch to lessen the blow. The phone call by Meyer and little Timmy were just icing on the cake

And to assume that Mark Richt and his staff do the same is absurd. Mark Richt has 10 times more moral fiber than everyone combined in this blog. He needs not to cheat. When you’re the only program in the country ranked in the final AP top 25 for 11 straight years, the recruits will come. And they always speak of the moral integrity of Coach Richt that lures them. How many recruits speak so highly of Meyer.

Why is this a Georgia / Florida issue. Urban Meyer shows his incompetence by not knowing the NCAA’s recruiting rules. As a UF fan, man up and put the blame where it belongs…your coach. No matter how minor you consider the infraction, it’s still a violation. Your program is strong and if you want it stay at that level, you need to hold the folks in charge accountable instead of making excuses and attacking other SEC schools and coaches. “Other schools are doing it too” —- A phrase every school in trouble uses, but never helps their cause.

They will be a major NCAA investigation into this, behind the scenes, schenanigans! What a disgrace! UF will be hurt for years to come. What a shame.

UGA will lose two games or more next season. There will be no NC, as usual, and all the good players who can leave will (including Stafford). BTW, did anyone hear Ellerbe’s interview right after the Sugar Bowl? I’ve never heard a more illiterate SOB in my life!

Actually I think Channing Crowder deserves the most illiterate SOB award. Nice try loser. Gaytors suck!

i haven’t heard anyone mention the new story involving the georgia coaches. eugene smith, one of the top players in florida next year worked out for georgia coaches yesterday. here is his exact quote, “Today I had a workout at my school for Georgia’s offensive coordinator,” Smith said. saint richt does not do everything by the books either. this doesn’t sound that serious to me, but neither does a phone call. as for florida’s discipline, urban kicked ronnie wilson and marcus thomas off the team. jon demps was kicked off the team as well. be careful with what you guys are saying, because this could be you guys next week. there are sooo many rules, and i don’t think there are any coaches that are 100% straight and narrow. name some of these terrible things that meyer has done in recruiting.

I love all the little Doggies and their conspiracy theories! If I was an unemployed graduate of that diploma mill, I would sit around all day and hate on a real football program too!

I am a Dawgs fan, but this is absolutely rediculous! C’mon NCAA, quit finding fault in everything!

The NCAA is like a bunch of lazy cops that hang at Krispy Kreme all night eating doughnuts; while other things that are going on,(like trying to fix the BCS mess), they are busy chasing their tails on petty stuff like a measly phone call. Get a life!

Everyone does some form of this violation. This is silly! If you dont think your school violates several times a recruiting year you are dilusional

Has anyone pointed out this is an internal investigation by UF, not the NCAA. If it is a violation it will be a self-reported minor violation. Don’t get too excited UGA fans. Has MR ever had a self reported minor violation? If so, glass houses..stones? Ring a bell? Isn’t UGA still on probation in basketball? Maybe that’s over; I don’t know. Get a grip.
